No, this isn't another Lord of Shadows thread.
(DOHOHOHOHOHOHO.)
But seriously, I've been thinking about something. If Ayami Kojima had been asked to make DXC Maria's design closer to her original RoB appearance and less like a beautiful little boy, how do you think it would have turned out?
-
It would have turned out fine i guess.
Her design doesn't really bother me.

Same here. It's mainly her awful, awful voice that bothers me.
-
Her English voice kind of amuses me.
"Yay!"
Anyway, I like her DXC design, and I love Kojima's artwork for the game. It's the first time she really broke away from her standard way of drawing. It's nice to have a lead character who doesn't have the same face, hair, and expression as Alucard. (Simon, Juste, Soma... It's the same head.)
-
I love how she made the DXC artwork..it`s perfect and I wouldn`t change anything. I hope she will be back on a future CV game. Miss her..
-
DXC's artwork was beautiful, and Maria's design is just fine to me. She looks naïve and innocent, like a little doll. The design reflects her youth and energy; I think it's great and I really don't see much that needs to be changed.

Agreeing here.
-
It would have turned out just as good as her design for DXC. Never found anything wrong it honestly: It was meant to be closer to her SOTN look, just without all the 'sex appeal' considering she's a little girl. It works.
-
I....... wasn't a fan. But I wasn't a fan of her old look either.
-
It was meant to be closer to her SOTN look
huh?
-
huh?
I echo this sentiment.
-
I have no trouble with her outfit but her hair couldv'e been left untied. And the only real detail that bothers me is IGA's change of her script when you rescue her; "we were together when they brought us here..." -Maria.
What the hell IGA! Stop messing around with what's established just because you have something against women heros!
(A-hem!)
My apologies to everyone in the dungeon for unaotherized IGA bashing. Sorry.

And yet he made a game starring a female protagonist. What the hell is wrong with you?
-
A woman who's just there to say "See? We made a game with a woman in it!", ends up essentially failing as a hero because everyone she knows and loves dies, and whose own game effectively erases her deeds from history by making Ecclesia's records fade into obscurity.
People who claim OoE is the defining proof Iga isn't sexist really need to think about OoE more.
-
If we're on the point that IGA is sexist, I wouldn't call him anymore sexist than any of the previous developers in the past.
And in Rondo, you play as a pink dress wearing 12 year old magical girl with more than your average bust. I think her design alone is pretty sexist. Don't forget her ending where the shot is angled where she has to cover what's under her dress. Sonia's a woman who's just there to say "See? We made a game with a woman in it!" And her game sucks.
I wouldn't really get pissy on IGA for sexism if I don't get pissy about the previous heroines. I mean even Charlotte's design is only as sexist as RoB Maria's, barring how some people find her useless in gameplay. Plus, IGA specifically searched out for Ayami Kojima, a female artist, and because of that, the franchise actually got a handful of female fans. And he has a pretty wild beard so that makes everything okay.
Also, I wanna argue that Shanoa's deeds were still heroic and that she didn't fail because the heroic value of her deeds don't suddenly diminish just because no one knew about. And I actually prefer that she couldn't save everyone instead of pulling out some Mary Sue trick but nagger.
Edit: On second thought, maybe Charlotte is worse than Maria with that thing she does when you hold up.

ALL I KNOW IS I WISH AKIHIRO YAMADA HAD DONE ARTWORK FOR MORE CASTLEVANIA GAMES.

Imagine if the cutscenes in Rondo had been based on this guy's art. That would have been amazing. Too bad the intro to Dracula XX doesn't really represent his style well...
I just bought an art book of this guy's stuff and I'm relishing it.
-
I'LL AGREE WITH THAT.
BROFIST.

THIS
Her story being a kill them all made things much more interesting than "We saved the day! Everyone is alright!"
I guess its also sexist that the Belmonts and their deeds were forgotten between Lament and CV3, OH WAIT.
-
I'm going to have to go with thernz on this one; Shanoa did not fail because she was forgotten. She still managed to lay waste to the castle, thus ensuring for another century of peace, so saying that she is erased from history is pretty much moot. A slayer of Dracula is still a slayer of Dracula.
Besides, Shanoa broke away from Ecclesia, which was an organization founded upon evil intentions, and she was more than ready to dispose of Barlowe when she found out what his aim was. Sweeping Ecclesia under the rug didn't necessarily take Shanoa's heroisms with it.

Sonia's a woman who's just there to say "See? We made a game with a woman in it!"
No... she's really not. At the time it was released, the point of Legends was to establish the entire Belmont bloodline. That's a pretty big deal in Castlevania canon.
OoE revolves around the idea of people trying to use "Dominus," a gimmick that has no direct bearing anywhere else in the Castlevania timeline before or after OoE.
A slayer of Dracula is still a slayer of Dracula.
Except people need to know you slayed Dracula for it to mean anything historically speaking.

But she isn't canon, and her story was really messy and ugly.

Yea..... it's weird.... but so is the whole parts of Dracula thing like in Simon's game or SotN.
Except people need to know you slayed Dracula for it to mean anything historically speaking.
True... but the players know. Good enough for me.

I always found the idea a little romantically bitter sweet, the world was saved but no one will known. That doesn't change the fact that a great deed was done. To quote Blade Runner. "All these moments lost in time... like tears in rain"
-

You are correct, historically and chronologically speaking. Yet, it's plausible to look at OoE as a more "personal" endeavor - a chronicle of a forgotten heroine, a lapse in the Belmont line filled in by whoever felt the need to fill it (case in point, Shanoa) and how they did so. Forgotten or no, CV heroes have always undertaken a difficult task in slaying Dracula and I appreciate being given a chance to "see it their way" and live their deeds before they fade away. That's how I think of it, more like a glimpse into the journey of a young woman who breaks away from what she has always known to destroy evil, remembered or not.
I have never played Castlevania Legends so I cannot comment on Sonia's role in the series. It isn't a part of the official canon though, but I don't know if the canon could be subjective to the player or not.
-
Gist of the story is that she did it with Alucard (though I think it was implied, not explicit) and she beat Alucard and Dracula. What makes it impossible to canon, unless you choose to ignore certain parts of CV3 is that Trevor was the first to defeat Dracula. And that all the Belmonts are now Quarter Vampires.
-
I demand a DXC mod that puts Maria back in her proper skirts! =P
-

Yeah but then again it was also riding on the back of SoTN. It really looks like they slammed together a bunch of "big deals."
"Psst psst. Alucard is in this game! And so is the FIRST woman Belmont! And it's the start of the Belmont bloodline!"
But then the storytelling in the game fell extremely short. It was just so vague and failed to explain anything. So it's an even better example of flaunting "See? We made a game with a woman in it!"
Not to hate on the Game Boy or anything, but just... w-why would they create the beginning of the series on a handheld in the first place?
-
You know, I should point out that Legends was merely establishing the orgin story of Dracula versus the Belmont Clan and not the family's history. Hell, even Lament didn't do that. The Japanese storyline, unlike the American, one never claimed that she was the actual first only the first Belmont warrior who was a dudette. Dracula's orgin was already explained in Castlevania III (the manual of Akumajou Densetsu) and Symphony of the night, so in that aspect the game didn't really fell short since there was nothing that needed any more explaining, though some kind off recap would have been nice.
And that all the Belmonts are now Quarter Vampires.
Even if Trevor would have had vampiric blood he is still a Belmont, the only ones who can carry the whip without consequences. He would be its rightful wielder and enemy at the same time. It can't be said how the whip would react since it comes down what the story writers make of it if something like that would ever occur, not your own personal view on the situation.
Don't get me wrong here, I hate SoniaxAlucard and the whole thing is deemed impossible by Castlevania Judgment but it was merely hinted upon so whatever. Not that this all really matters since Legends is an AU story according to IGA. I kind off like that idea.
-

Shanoa isn't a Belmont. That's what's wrong. :'(
-X
-
Technically, yes, but it is implied that she inherits at least a small portion of the power in the Belmont bloodline through her absorption of the Torpor Glyphs they were imprisoned in.
-
Pardon my last entry; Shanoa isn't a Belmont AND not using the Vampirekiller.

Actually, what's up with all of the 2D CV games lately having no focus on whips? I was all excited for POR, but then all of the whips wound up being really useless (unless I'm missing something on how to use them properly). They should've just done away with swords and spears entirely, or else made the whips considerably more powerful—especially the Vampire Killer, for crying out loud, which if I recall, you only get to use at the very end because otherwise you don't have the power for it. Huge disappointment. "Hey, this game's got whips! (But what I won't tell you is they all really suck!)"—IGA

Totally agreed. And even after you defeat Richter and all, it still isn't as powerful as you would think it would be, especially when Richter could scourge Jonathan into pieces with a couple of hits. Then again, maybe it has something to do with being a Morris, or because Richter is super strong by nature? I don't know. I worked backwards in the series, so when I got to Circle of the Moon, I finally had the chance to say, "Yay, a whip!"
-
Well I don't know if the whip's power is greater or weaker if your a Morris or Belmont. After all Jon Morris from Bloodlines was using the Vampirekiller and at level 3 was the strongest weapon in that game. The Alucard spear, though it was interesting to use was not as powerful. The Alucard spear at level 3 was equal in power to the vampirekiller at level 2. Note: I'm not refering to their special attacks.

If the morris/charlotte game is to be believed... the power of the VK isn't unlocked unless they unlock it's memory.
-
More than that, among my disappointments with PoR was not having John Morris and Eric Lecarde instead of Richter/Maria.
Don't get me wrong, I love the DS games, but there's far too much furious Rondo of Blood masturbation in them.

Meh, the game sucked... upgrades for your specials are lame, and take a ridiculously long time. So if you aren't trying to do it, you are unlikely to max more than 1. The stages are crazily badly designed. Just... soooo much gone wrong.
Anywho... I used that specific phrasing because I'm hoping IGA goes... wtf was I thinking, retcon!
