ENCORE OF THE NIGHT!! Haha, so funny..
-
HD Alucard!
-
Blah, how very pointless... a puzzle game?
(will get it :D)
-
Interesting. It's definitely worth a look for me; I love puzzlers. Can't say I was expecting it, though.
-
Let the hating for this game, begin~
-
Well at least it isn't Order of Shadows 2...

/facepalm and sigh
-
I officially retire from CV until LOS comes aboard, this is just insulting, thanks IGA, thanks KOnami japan, thanks Alufag, you've destroyed the very last drop of dignity left on this saga.
-
DO NOT WANT
LOL
-
I wouldn't be pleased if this was the major console effort, like LoS, but just as an iphone gaem I think this is cute and nifty :)
-
Cute, even if it is yet another version of Puzzle Fighter. I kinda doubt it's meant to be a big thing with Castlevania, so whatever.
-
It looks like more than just Puzzle Fighter, one of those screenshots is of an inventory screen and some of the other options are stats, spells, etc. More like Puzzle Fighter + Puzzle Quest + Castlevania.
-
Ohh, I think this is very cool. :D I was just wondering few days ago why there are no CV games on the iPhone yet. Puzzle games are great and if combined with Castlevania theme, it can`t go wrong. I hope to hear some of my favorite tunes, and with the whole SOTN feel, I am sure I am going to enjoy this!
It would be great to have a finger-whiping CV game on the iPhone, though..that would be much more satisfying.

The hell?

Look like "Taisen Puzzledama".
-
I actually sort of like this game's concept. I have always liked the puzzle fighting games like "Puzzle Kombat" that were included with a couple fairly recent Mortal Kombat games. ;)
My only question is will this work on my first generation iPod Touch? It is still running like a champ after nearly two and a half years of moderate to heavy use. :D
-
Man, what's next? Castlevania Party? With Judgement, Harmony of Despair, and now this game, it really feels like Konami is whoring the license. This is what should have been for the pachi slot game while the cut scenes from the actual pachi slot game should be for a console game.
-
I don't ever plan on getting an iPhone. Or this game.
If it turns out being fun, then all the power to them. But I think I'll pass.
-
...looks very low budget. First Harmony of Despair, and now this. Very weird.
-
Wow, Konami is really letting loose with the milking machine on Castlevania's teats.
Shame on you Konami!
-
I'm passing too..
-
I just wish they would stop wasting resources in producing casual stuff like this & focus on expanding the brand name in more worthwhile endeavors. Does the world really need TWO Pachislot "games"? More ambitious efforts like Akumajo Dracula Arcade & LoS, is what Castlevania needs to be relevant.
Looking forward to Castlevania Go-Kart for the 3DS.
-
The next 2D Castlevania game will be a iPad exclusive, im calling it now.
Also looking forward to the Castlevania tower defense game.
-
Castlevania Pinball - coming to the DS
-
Looking forward to FarmWygolVille
-
Looking forward to FarmWygolVille
Right huh! Find the lost cats!
-
Also looking forward to the Castlevania tower defense game.
That would actually be awesome tho
-
It could be called Tower of Eternity.
-

Konami wouldn't think of it as "wasting resources" if it makes a profit. I would assume this was low budget, and you can only do so much with a low budget.
Also who would really want a 2d Castlevania on an iPhone? The input methods on the iPhone are not ideal for a traditional Castlevania game. They needed a Castlevania game on this platform and this is a valid approach. Would you rather have Order of Shadows 2? The controls on the original OoS sucked with a d-pad, imagine what would happen on a touchscreen.
-
They needed a Castlevania game on this platform and this is a valid approach.
The market wasn't screaming for a Castlevania-themed puzzle app, though. That Harmony of Despair thing I can kind of understand; I look at it as Konami expirimenting with a multiplayer approach. But this.. this is just completely random, & it really doesn't make any sense for Castlevania. They're better off porting a simplified version of an older title, like they did with DoS on cellphones. And I never played OoS so I can't comment on that. They could've just gave it a different title with unique characters, why lend the CV brand name to this genre? I just think it's entirely unnecessary.
Whatever, I'll buy it anyway, it'll probably cost $5-10 bucks. Gives me something to do at work.
-
It's very difficult to get any unbranded game off the ground on the iPhone or any mobile platform. For every successful unbranded game on the App Store, there's 50 that failed. Most of the successful games are ports from another platform. And while they could've done a port, it probably would've sucked.
I understand where they were going, while Puzzle Quest is more like a traditional RPG (turn-based), this is more like an Action RPG (fast paced Puzzle Fighter style). It appeals to a large audience, puzzle and puzzle rpg fans, and for a game that is $5-10 I'm sure they'll get plenty of sales from Castlevania fans who are on the fence about it.
LoS is trying to open Castlevania up to a wider audience. I think this game has the same purpose.
-
well, its nice seeing the classic SotN equipment sprites look decent and not so pixelly. i would enjoy trying to collect them all in a dinky game like this. ha, i see the Alucart sword is the one being displayed. wonder if you can get an Alucart status in this game?
is this the world's first puzzle combat game to feature a life meter??
would you be able to play the game on your computer without owning an iPod or iPhone on iTunes? though i suppose without the touch interface, it probably wouldn't work so well on a computer.
-
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm9819872
Reminds me of the Taisen Puzzle Dama games, Konami has made plenty of them including Twinbee and Tokimeki. They are still making them on PS 2 in Japan.
-
Oh great. The first Castlevania game on iPhone is a puzzle game, not an action/side scroller.
-
I don't know if anyone has seen this already, but I just stumbled across this blog entry posted by the developer and programmer of this game on the Konami Touch website. Basically, he's addressing the question of "why a Castlevania puzzle RPG?" and elaborating on some of the features. Apparently exploring Dracula's castle entirely will take around 20 hours in this game. He also says they're aiming for a release date of June 10...I find this interesting.
http://konami.com/touch/blog.html
-
20 hours? So this is going to be an all new adventure instead of yet another take an already excisting CV game? *fingers crossed*
-

Well, if this passage proves to be correct...
Believe it or not the RPG system in this game is quite evolved, it isn't just a generic RPG system pasted on haphazardly (dare I mention Order of Shadows again?). It includes most of the elements you'll find in Symphony of the Night and its clones, as well as other RPG features that have not been seen in a Castlevania game before. Beyond the action and RPG elements, an important feature of Castlevania is the exploration. Believe me, this feature is in this game in its full glory. A full iteration of Dracula's Castle is included in this game. While most iPhone games give you a total of 10 minutes worth of gameplay, exploring the entire castle in Castlevania Puzzle will take a good 20 hours. Not to mention the multiple endings and other features that will have you wanting to explore it over and over again. Exploration, action, tons of items, multiple endings dozens of different enemies, Rondo of Blood sprites...sounds like a Castlevania game to me. Oh and about the sprites, many of them have been updated by our in-house artist, Emily Steigerwald. With only one artist, we couldn't possibly update them all, but I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised with what we've
accomplished.
...then it looks like this game is going to be something new, yet familiar all at once. I certainly wasn't expecting this level of depth from it, that's for sure.
-
That was a fun read. The internationalization of Castlevania is getting a bit crazy. I feel like a dope contemplating what the cheapest way to get some kind of device that could play this game.
I wonder if something like Sisters Mode from PoR would work on an I Phone?
-
I commend Gutierrez for manning up to Order of Shadows being a piece of crap.
The concept is interesting if pulled off carefully.
I still think Konami is guilty of milking at a corporate level.
And, if not all the sprites are going to be redrawn at a higher resolution like Alucard then I'd rather they just keep the originals.
Not that I plan to ever own an iPhone with which to play this.
-
Thank for the link, it was interesting to read it. Very nice of Mr. Gutierrez to take the time to write about the development. I can′t wait to see the trailer! :) I will buy the game for sure on the launch day. I wonder what music will be in it. I hope we hear a lot of great classics from SotN as well as some other well known CV tunes. Another thing: I hope they will include the multitasking fast app switching, that is a feature of iPhone OS 4.0. It would be a big mistake not to include that.
I wish someone would reveal where the hell is Iga. I hope he is making that Castlevania 3DS game for Nintendo. Maybe we′ll find out at E3.
-
It does sound ambitious. But it's a puzzle game and the screenshots looked pretty terrible.
I just can't get hyped for it. Well, I also don't have a iPhone so I probably shouldn't anyway~
-
Reaction prior to obnoxious egotistical "I'm better than everyone else and I'm developing the best thing ever" Gutierrez posting: WHAT THE HELL A PUZZLE GAME WITH REUSED SPRITES WTF KONAMI YOU'RE KILLING THE FRANCHISE
Reaction after obnoxious egotistical "I'm better than everyone else and I'm developing the best thing ever" Gutierrez posting: Hey, this looks awesome!
Ah, the impressionability of random internet nerds.
-
blah blah
Don′t you agree it′s very nice of Gutierrez to explain the game and what′s it about, why and how it is being made? He seems very enthusiastic and positive about it, so give it a chance! I welcome this game, puzzle games are great for mobiles and with CV elements I will probably enjoy it. I think every fan should purchase it to support Castlevania. Let Konami know we love our favorite game series.
-
prunyuu~
-
well, its good to know that they started out with the question "let's make a Castlevania game, but figure out which genre would work for this platform", instead of "let's make a puzzle game and figure out which franchise to brand it as".
heh, the fact that the "surname" of the game is "Castlevania Puzzle:" makes me think they're planning on creating a whole bunch of these. wonder if they'd all be takes on previous traditional games. i'm going to doubt that this will be canon (I don't know if there's a such thing as canon anymore), but it would be interesting if there was a distinct "Castlevania Puzzle" mini-canon. at this point, i don't even know if Symphony of the Night itself is canon to Castlevania Puzzle (the same way I'm not sure if Dracula's Curse or Curse of Darkness are canon to the Pachislot series).

-
I was laughing at the trailer and all the tie-in's it tried to make to SotN. What a sham..
-
It looks almost...... fun? :o
-
I hope they will include the new Game center capabilities. This game would be great to play with friends over that social gaming network! Sharing results on facebook is pretty lame.....
One week to go!
-
It actually looks pretty fun, I would get it if I had an iPhone.
-
None of the sprites in that trailer were low res and pixelated like the screenshots, looks like it is headed in the right direction...
-
This blog, IGA DefenCe Force (yeah, defenCe xD) made a funny post, It wasn't made by me but other members of Castlemaniacs.com (Yeah, they don't like IGA neither) and you can check it out ;)

They did say they were gonna have their artist redraw as many sprites in higher resolution as possible.
Honestly though that trailer really just makes me want a high res port of the original game with both audio tracks, properly executed Saturn extras, some new bonus equipment, and complete quests for Maria & Richter. Sorta like a SotN HD Remix if you will.

Why do they have to whine about some Castlevania producer when he is, oh I don't know, not involved with the project at all? If they want to be trolls at least be good trolls and hit where it actually hurts. :(

Yeah, we know that, but it doesn't matter, it's just for fun, they don't want a Pulitzer :P
-
Ok, so Alucard, Richter, Maria, Shaft, Succubus, Death, and Dracula are playable characters. Wonder who the shadowed-out 8th character is? Master Librarian?? Galamoth? Or maybe it's random select?
Wonder if the other characters equip the same items that Alucard does. It seems like you're only allowed to select one item at a time that boosts a given statistic. Seems like the weapon slot affects attack power, the shield slot affects defense, the body armor slot affects stamina, the head slot affects intelligence, accessory 1 affects luck, accessory 2 affects strength, and i'm not sure what the cape or legs slots do. That's an interesting way to do it.
They seem to have different attacks at their disposal. Also, the different blocks seem to represent different elements. "Green" blocks seem to be lightning, and I'd guess red ones are "fire", white ones are "holy", purple ones are "shadow", and blue ones are "water".
They have some odd playing card system with "crosses" (good guys) and "skulls" (bad guys) being the two suits card has a different Castlevania character on it (they found a new way to censor the Succubus). The cards look pretty good, I want a pack. I clipped them at wikia if you want to take a look: http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Castlevania_Puzzle:_Encore_of_the_Night#Playable_Characters
Oh, and story is just a retread through SotN, nothing new shown at least, though I imagine they might have "alternate" events if you pick characters other than Alucard, which could be interesting. Maybe something to make up for the fact Richter and Maria had no storyline in SotN?? It'd be sad if only Alucard has a story and RPG mode, but possible.
-
EDIT: It′s not coming out tomorrow after all..
-
Some new blogs got posted:
http://www.konami.com/touch/blog.html
Apparently the release got pushed back.
-
I wonder who the hidden character will be.
-
Wow..very interest read. I love how they blog about the game and its development. Anyway, I don′t see this game as a CV game, but as a puzzle game that is CV-themed. This is because the only CV I am really into has to be a 2D game classicvania or metroidvania. But puzzle games are great for mobile devices and touch screens so I will be more than happy to buy and play it. And this game seems to be very deep with its RPG elements, so that′s nice.
As the iPhone 4 is coming out, with multitasking and high resolution display, it would be nice if they put some higher resolution artwork in it and, of course, the multitasking app-switching should be implemented into the game. Without this multitasking option in the game, I would be disappointed. I want to be able to go to another app and then right back into the game where I left, without loading.
-
I will admit that I'm a little bummed over the delay. *is shot*
I hope this extra time allows for some fine-tuning. It will be playable at E3, according to the blog, so we will probably hear more than a few first impressions from gaming sites and the like.
-
one thing that bugged me about Puzzle Fighter was that the characters were doing all these fun little animations, but watching them do them was a really bad idea to do in the game and only a distraction really (unless you're watching someone else play). i imagine the same will be the case with this game.
-
New IGN hands-on:
http://au.wireless.ign.com/articles/110/1100058p1.html
-
I have seen the cam video now, it looks nice, but tough. Too many different colored blocks..I wonder how good touch controls are for this type of game. Still, can′t wait to play it!
-
Whoever took that video isn't really showing off gameplay he's just dropping blocks in random places, he doesn't even match any blocks for the entire video. Also his MP is full and he isn't using any spells. This video doesn't do the game any justice.
-
I would like to play it, but i don't have an iPhone........ :(
-
In his last blog, Gutierrez said it's possible they could go to other platforms. Probably other smartphone platforms, who knows maybe even PSP or DS.
-
I would love to see it on DS!! ;D
-
Apparently this has been released in the EU region but isn't out in the US yet for some reason. Anyone over in Europe get their hands on this yet? Touch Arcade gave it a good review:
http://toucharcade.com/2010/07/16/castlevania-puzzle-encore-of-the-night-review/
-
ha, the Master Librarian gets to give the tutorial. i'm still half expecting him to turn out to be the "hidden character".
-
I played it yesterday briefly and it′s nice, but I didn′t have patience to go through tutorials and read all the text. I will have to find a more relaxed day (maybe today, Sunday) to play some more. I only did 2 levels and I didn′t get deep into it. I like how the game looks. It is great that you can even add your own music tracks into gameplay. I have all CV music on the iPhone :)
-
DROID version, plz & thnkyou! :P
-
I played it again today and it was kind of addicting..one level more, one more, one more! Early levels are short because the enemies are weak. I wonder how it gets later..Still haven′t used the spells nor cards. For now it has been just the basic stuff, some new equipment, experience points..I like the game for a quick play on the go, for a phone game with a touch screen it′s done well.
-
I am dying to get my hands on this now!! I hope it comes out in the US very soon...
-
It is likely releasing in the US tonight, the app store refreshes around midnight or so every Thursday.
-
It makes me want to replay SOTN right now, so I will rather go play SOTN and save this Encore for times while waiting in lines somewhere..The phone is the only thing I always carry with me, so it might come in handy one day.
-
It is likely releasing in the US tonight, the app store refreshes around midnight or so every Thursday.
I actually had that notion, considering the app store's cycle and Konami's love of Thursdays, and I hope it's true.
Also, I second the need for an Android version. I have an iPod touch, but my cell phone is the Droid, and I love it.
-
DROID version, plz & thnkyou! :P
I third this notion, I too own a Droid. I need this!! :(
-
OMG it's out on the US app store! Buy it now!

Been playing it on my ipod touch, and I gotta say, it isn't that bad. Definately a good time killer, it has some deep ideas. Still at the beginning but I think I got the gist of the gameplay..
-
OMG it's out on the US app store! Buy it now!
Overreact much?
-
I hope it comes out on the ds or psp or something, cause I doubt there will be a version for blackberrys
-
One of the few times i didn't have to buy a console for one game I already had it lol. Its a fun if you like puzzle games much got it anyways for completeness.
My 3G 64-bit Ipod Touch is jailbroken anyways so i can play rondo of blood, nes, snes and gens castlevanias and in theory the psx ones, tho i haven't gotten them (psx ones) to work past the title screen yet.
Second to that the psp with Custom Firmware is the best cv portable thing for completess, followed by the wii which i noticed Rondo finally game out officially for, which i went and bought on the wii virtual console store immedialy lol.
-
I've invested a good three hours or so in the game now, and I'd say overall its worth the 5$ for a Castlevania and/or puzzle game fan. The RPG aspects are handled pretty well, and the gameplay is easily adapted to within a few matches.
I do have a few customary gripes, though:
-Only Alucard, Death, Maria, and some of the lesser enemies sprites have been redone in higher definition. Much of the time the 'versus' pre-match screens will show a smooth, higher detail character model standing next to a ripped-directly from SotN pixels and all version.
-Though the music changes as you navigate through the areas of the castle, in the matches themselves its always the same score over and over again, and it gets annoying after awhile.
-The touch screen sensitivity seems a little wonky, although it could be my iphone case.
Other than that, its a swell time!
-
Now that it's out, do we know who the secret character is? Galamoth? Olrox? Master Librarian? Ferryman? Trevor/Sypha/Grant?
-
Another review on IGN:
http://wireless.ign.com/articles/110/1108031p1.html (http://wireless.ign.com/articles/110/1108031p1.html)
I didn′t bother to read because I have the game.
@jimmay17
I think you can change the music in the game and put any song from your music library. I still haven′t tried it, but I will. I have the entire CV music collection on the iPhone. :D
-
I have my eyes on an iPhone 4... this game may very well be the first one I get, though that IGN review - while positive overall - says the controls are a little frustrating and not terribly precise...
-
I sometimes have problems with positioning/moving the blocks, so they're right, it's not 100% precise. But I guess you get used to it if you play it for a while.
