It's one of the few successful 2D series that's still around today.

Your right, all the old 2D series like Mario and Zelda have converted to mainly 3D. Castlevania Hasn't made that jump yet, though IGA has attempted, even though I love CoD.

I love it because of all the references to mythology - be it Greek or Asian. It creates a whole atmosphere of the past filled with demons and monsters that could once have been real.
I like to reference some of the creatures on wikipedia or just random web sites and i can spend hours reading and learning about why such references are made

( Charon the boatman for one example or the Cocytus spell from PoR, this is a reference to one of the frozen rivers of hell )

Castlevania is also a challenge - most of the time - which makes a change from todays games too.

Well, I've been playing it since I was 4 years old, so I grew up with it and it kind of grew on me. Plus, CV3 was the first game I ever owned myself (not sharing with my brother). But it's always been fun and I love side scroller's so it's great

The music and the atmosphere makes it one of my favorite games. Even though the series undergone many changes and alterations since '86, the music and the adventurous mood have always remained top-notch.

I might be the only one who thinks this but its not just the story that gets me but recently i turned my life around and ive always been a Castlevania fan but ive really got into them lately because to me they all seem to revolve around a Christian theme (maybe thats just me) except for DoS it seems to focus more around astrology.  but not just that i love the arcade style of play.

Castlevania is a very unique series. What I like about it the most is the concept of heritage. For example, the Belmont continue their legacy throughout the series, and other families as well. And of course, the gothic feeling and beautiful music... a perfect a series. =)

The locations, definatly. In my first game Bloodlines I really loved the feel of the differant gothic levels, ofcourse the music was, as it is now, fantastic.

Now'a'days whenever I crack open a Castleroid (or Metroidvania if you prefer), what I look foreward to the most is discovering all the exciting locations.

I love them for the challenge, action, and sense of adventure. I'm a big horror buff and these games have everybody from the mummy to frankenstein.

Basicly everything,
The great story behind it that has references to about all ancient lore there is and the gothic themes and beautifull music that is used. The game itself varies in difficulty but can always present you with a diffirent form of challange.

Basicly Castlevania is one of the only(if not THE only) game that started with the old and kept growing with us.

I love the stories, I love the characters, the music and artwork.

I love the setting for the games as I am a huge vampire lore fan and have been for years.

Settings, Musics, Enemies, Vampires and Gameplay.

I love the gameplay, and if it goes to 3d, it better be good. I like the setting, old castles during the old times is awesome. Music ulez, nuff said. There are so many enemies and some very cool ones. I also love vampire stories, and vampires are just awesome.

What's not to like? And it did go 3D about 7 years ago. Watch Vampire Hunter D (1985) you will see what inspired the series. (especially Alucard)

WHAT THE HELL KINDA QUESTION IS THAT?! WHY NOT!? They are fucking great! the timeline travesl all-throught history, they basically never end because Dracula never dies. Each char, has different story and skills and specials, etc. Not only are they stragetical but action too. how could you NOT love them

The music.

While the games themselves are hit and miss (mostly hit), the music has remained pretty consistently awesome through them all. Which is shocking, because this rarely happens in game series' and there's been multiple composers though it's history. Hell, I even like some of the tracks in the canceled Resurrection...which almost seems impossible. It's international law that Castlevania music has to be A) Good and B) include one or more remixes of classic tunes like Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears.

I think when Michiru Yamane took over, the music went from "Awesome" to "Orgasmic". I remember as a kid I'd go into the sound test in "Bloodlines" and put on a pair of headphones. We've seen legends like Yozo Koshiro (Ys, Actraiser, Steets or Rage) throw their 2 cents in. I've even heard college music professors complement SotN's soundtrack.

The story would be second, but the jury is still out on where IGA is going with all this.

Just about everything.  The music, the gothic themes and settings, and vampires are awesome.  Also, the storyline and the metroidvania formula of gameplay.
The only single complaint I can think of is the anime style characters in the previous two games, though in games as great as Castlevania, I can look past it.

The series taught me to look past the flaws of a product and to focus on what I enjoy about it.  This lesson could be applied to many things in life so thank you Castlevania for helping me grow as a person.

That's why I love the Deus Ex games. With Castlevania, it's because I'm interested in mediaeval history, which is particularly prevalent in LOI, CV3 and COD (in chronological order). The storyline of Castlevania isn't as simplistic and formulaic as it may first appear. I also love the Yamane music and the Kojima artwork. The anime is acceptable. What I want to see is Kojima's artwork animated.

Oh man...Castleroid...LOL.

I've recently had a resurgence of playing through the Gameboy and DS titles.  I held my breath for them to release these games on a console, and finally just decided to play them on the DS.  They are great games.  I would imagine an eventual collection releases, but I wonder how they will do the DS games because of the touch screen, down the road?  (i.e. will they forever be tied to this system?)  The music, and atmosphere, the game play, the bosses...some say it's all rehashed, but it's not really.  I'll get to all of them eventually, time permitting.  Corrently on PoR.  What a great game.

the amazing amount of mythology and the extra amount of effort that they put into the games that you will only find if you actually look for it.    like items that do seemingly random and unnecessary things, but the fact that there in there is cool.

The DS games could do without the touch screen. The Magic Seals in DoS were just annoying (you have to keep the stylus out while you're fighting, which makes pressing the buttons uncomfortable), and correct me if I'm wrong, but was the touch screen used for anything else in PoR than controlling the other character (apart from the menus of course).

I know, it seems like they put sisters mode in there so no one would think they were stupid to put PoR on DS. They had to use the touch screen somehow.

You could also use the touchscreen to control the partner.

But yeah, the sisters mode controls are a totally unneeded and forced gimmick. I'd rather not see anything like that ever again, or if so keep it for those extra enemy modes like all those flying enemies. Or Death, his mode for example would make more sense with controls like that.

Yeah, but the partner thing was completely useless. And speaking of extra enemy modes, we need more!

Castlevania is a series that started 20+ years ago, and is still going strong today. Not many franchises can say the same thing.

Although I believe that if Castlevania went exclusively 3D with the advent of the N64, it would not be as popular as it is today.

Thank God for the GBA, DS, and PSP. They allowed for some of the most stellar CV games to date, and brought Castlevania back to 2D where it BELONGS!

- Striking imagery. The series in general has a very unique / cool look. The games always look good.

- Great music

- More often than not, the games are good gameplay-wise.

- Although I think the series isn't consistent in delivering in this area, Castlevania in general provides an entertaining story to go along with all the above.

Also, one has to do the seal in a given amount of time (before all the stars on the edge of the seal goes out.)  I didn't know that until I was fighting that time pausing guy.  I eventually found out after my 4th or 5th time fidghting him after doin the seal thing slowly the first four times.

Actually, you could take as long as you want to start drawing the seal once prompted in DoS.  Once you start, though, you do have a limited amount of time to complete the seal.  So, you really have as much time as you need to get the stylus ready to draw the seal when the time comes; there's no need to have it at the ready while you're actively fighting a boss.

the DS games could probably be translated to a console.

the partner control from PoR could be assigned to the second analogue stick, and DoS could ditch the seal system.

I grew up on Castlevania back in the NES days when me and my brother would just play CV, Jackel, Contra, Mario, Zelda and of course Metal Gear back in the day :D

Fun times... I remember going over to my brother's friends house (I was little at the time and really didn't understand video games) they where trying so hard to beat Simon's Quest. It was like the "ultimate" game back then because of all the mistranslations and puzzles and what not.

But I also enjoyed vampire mythology, so that's one of the top reasons why I was so in to Castlevania. Back in highschool my friends would brag about me because I was the "biggest" Castlevania freak they'd know and all these kids would come up to me asking how to beat the original side scrolling and metroidvania games.

Fun times :)

I actually got into Castlevania because my older brother liked it, or I heard him mention it being a scary/ creepy game.

As a valentines day gift from his parents, my best friend at the time got Castlevania for NES. I remember it being the best game I had played on the NES, I remember the game kinda creeping me out and actually messing with my dreams a little bit. I often talked to my brother about how far I had gotten in the game and he acted like he barely remembered it, I was just trying to impress my brother and ended up getting obsessed with the game.

I was raised in kind of a religious family and we were very involved in church, by that I mean we went to church a lot. My church had these tracts that they handed people, they were really like 10 page comics about someone dying and meeting Death and demons and stuff. I collected them simply because Death was a character in the Castlevania games.

Growing up in the eighties, our parents made us go outside because video games were bad for us, so often my friends and I would role play video games since we couldn't actually stay inside in the shade from sweltering summer heat. Castlevania was often what we role played.

The castlevania games always had great music and every game on the NES had nothing but great songs. I liked most of the music in CV4, after that (excluding sotn) the songs were kinda hit and miss, except when they redid a tune.
Other than megaman, Castlevania songs are the only ones that I can actually call" Memorable"

I've always been a fan of classic horror, and I liked that Castlevania was a neat little package displaying my favorite ones (especially Death, although not a famous monster) and the backgrounds and places you went through had such a great effect on the genuiness of the games.

Also being raised in a religious family, I could convince my family that this was a "christian" game. Crosses, and churches and fighting evil lol So, our elders couldn't call my parents out for being bad parents for letting me play evil games. This game was accessable.

Honestly this game has been a staple of my life since 87, and it's been the reason I have bought systems that normally did not interest me. Here's the systems I've bought simply for a castlevania title.

Super Nes-Castlevania 4
Playstation- SOTN
DS- Dawn of Sorrow/ Aria of Sorrow
PSP-drac X Chronicles
Ps2- Lament of Innocence

Sorry, I'm done with my novel.

I've got a holy water icon tattooed on my right forearm.
My band (Sacred Sorrow) has a song titled "what a horrible night to have a curse", and we come out to "Requiem for the Gods"

I love so many aspects of the Castlevania series past and present, but if I had to narrow it down to one reason I'd have to go with just the fact that I've played and loved them since the first one on NES came out. I guess I would of been 4 or 5 at the time, and it just stuck. Aside from other classics like Mario, Zelda, Contra, etc., not many game series are still around and coming out with new titles.

There is a very special feeling you get when you play a Castlevania-game. The music, story, environments , well , everything brings a very cool atmosphere. I personally LOVE Castlevania-music, I have downloaded several Castlevania-songs.Mostly from Symphony of the Night (God I love that title) and Curse of Darkness.  :-*

im not into the gothic atmosphere thing but castlevania is by far a great game and has a long history the music is great the  storyline, the detail of the backgrounds, if feels like if u can be apart of the game. Castlevania will be a classic and always will be.

They need to bring out Castlevania Ressurection mayb for the Wii
