For me it was in DoS towards the beginning when there was a stupid spelling mistake. It was something dumb like "the" or "she" and after they misspelled it, it kinda took me out of the game. I was on edge waiting for the next misspelling. Not a big deal, but that was my most disappointing moment.
(try not to list games that dissapointed you. Just things that happend in them.)
-
There is a spelling mistake in Dos? never saw it.
Anyway my most disapointing moment was when I fought Death in SoTN, he is so stupidly easy its not even fun to fight him.

Hit the NES with your head to make a hole!
At least, that's what you want to do after you finally figure out what to do there ;)

Why does everyone hate CoD???? Sure, it was a bit wierd at times, like the fact that IGA threw in an electric guitar as a weapon and a toilet and slot machine as part of the chairquest but still.......I think it was an awesome game!

CoD is one of my favorite games.
Trevor Belmont - playable, in cut scenes and a boss
Hector is a great character
Love the music
Game is fun
But a lot of people don't like the game.
-
Hahah use the eletric guitar. It's always fun going around beating zombies with a shredding axe ;)
-
Curse of Darkness
Ditto. Absolutely.
-
The level design in CoD totally puts off the whole experience.
Granted, some of the characters were cool, but the gameplay itself is bad & a pitiful excuse for a CV game.
Even IGA himself said that he thinks he failed with 3D castlevania & must do better.
Sorry but I want a game that's gonna blow my mind, not some lackluster title that always gets a "it's tolerable b/c it has castlevania on it" response.
-
CoD one of my favorite CV games too. More than SotN.
Biggest disappointment would have to be Castlevania Legends. ;D
-
Portrait of Ruin
Agreed, especially its empty filler extra modes. There wasn't an extra mode worse than those, especially the completely butchered gameplay in sisters mode, something that was absolutely not castlevania and should have never been made, at least for storyline vital characters mode.
-
Most disappointing moment would be like, right now with DX Chronicles. Not with the game itself, but with some of the things I've read from people, like the Kotaku guy giving info on how to access SOTN so people don't have to "Suffer through the Rondo remake dying pointless deaths" (not an actual quote but damn pretty close to what the guy said.)
Disappointed at people saying the game is too hard because the controls are "horrible". Just because the character walks instead of running doesn't mean the controls are bad, bad control would be an unresponsive piece of shift that doesn't let you do what you want.
People that say they bought this just for SOTN make me sad. But hey, it's their choice, if it means the game will sell more so IGA can make the next console CV in 2D or 2.5D, more power to them.

Hit the NES with your I SMELL A COWARD, IS THAT YOU HULK to make a hole!
Yeah, I was gonna write "sledgehammer," but I don't want to make too much sense, now :P
Most disappointing moment? I think I've been trying to avoid those for a while now. I thought HoD kinda fizzled out, but the game was uneven in general (luminous cavern, argh).
-
Julius Mode's "Ending" in DOS.
if your going to make an alternate chaaracter mode that's frusteratingly hard that has actual meaning to the storyline, give it a freaking meaningful conclusion. I was so pissed when I got what we got. that's the only time in a Castlevania game where i felt both "Frusteration" pissed and "Getting shafted" pissed.
PoR's Sister mode. I agree with Serio that they should not have given the touch screen gameplay to the prologue mode, because it just doesn't make sense.
by the time Stella and Loretta make it to Brauner, they are obviously perfectly capable of kicking his ass, plus you can't fight dracula this way, either.
Generally, the fan reaction to PoR as well. I think the fan base is way, WAY too hard on it.
-
Julius mode was hard?
-
In Reply To #20
I thought it was, especially Abbadon, and there was a lot of tedius grinding.
Julius mode is a bit of a sore spot with me because it had a good story--your main game protagonist that you have followed for two games has ultimately turned evil, and I grinded through the mode hoping to get a great emotional payoff of this storyline, dying about 20 times each to Abbadon and Soma, only to find out that there is ZERO payoff
on this storyline.
that was the biggest castlevania dissapointment, in my opinion.

Too repitive to be excused, extremely bland graphics, idiotic AI, and voice acting that made me want to slam my head through a window...
...you know what, it could have been worse...
-
The pathetic level design in both Curse of Darkness and Portrait of Ruin comes immediately to mind, but those are probably just recent examples.
I remember being kinda pissed when I played CV2 back in the day. I adored the first one, but I was too young to comprehend what the second game was. I kept thinking, "Wow, this is the longest level ever. Where is the boss? When am I going to get to the castle?"
-
There are so many. Here are just a couple, in no particular order. Spoilers:
1.Trevor not being the main character in CoD.
2.Trevor getting stabbed in CoD.
3.Trevor not even being mentioned in CoD's credits. How can they not even tell you what happened to him, especially with what happened?!
4.Finding out that a Japanese exchange student from the future is now the reincarnation of Dracula.
5.Having to fight and defeat Richter as Jonathon Morris, as if he could actually defeat a true Belmont.
6.The origin of the Vampire Killer...it was just given to Leon by Rinaldo.

Hydra boss in DXC and CoD's long halls.
-
Alucard's new VA and the anime art for the two DS games.
-
Another thing is the Art for Yoko in AoS. Am I the only one that feared for my life whenever I had to talk to her? She was the only scary thing in any castlevania game.
I was a bit dissapointed by HoD in general because of needless backtracking and lack of difficulty (and juste's circus outfit.) If there wasn't a front dash or afterimage I would probably have sold the game...and the fact that I got the double-pack.
-
im surprised no one else posted this, i was dissapointed that you didnt get to fight Dmitri again (or Celia for that matter) in DOS. i mean, the way he "Died" was kinda a copout, we saw him blow Arikado away, if you were going to put "Giant fleshy skeleton boss" in there, at least let Dmitri fight before dieing. plus, Celia shouldve been a boss, i mean that room in the garden stage was just for a cut scene? it had the space for a boss battle, why not?

The DAMN long and EMPTY halls of Dracula's Castle in CoD. What was the point of walking down LONGASS hallways where you basically were the only thing around?
But yeah, a lot of CoD was disappointing. The music, the character design, and the dialog was awesome. The level design was horrible. The combat system seemed clunky and a step down from LoI's smooth combo system(LoI's battle system was AWESOME).
-
Biggest disappointments, by game:
Lament of Innocence: Dracula's power stems from glowing magic rocks.
COD: Trevor Belmont, the most powerful Belmont until that point, somehow fails to detect a loud-mouthed man in high heels carrying a giant spear and gets stabbed through the heart.
Castlevania Adventure: Entire damn thing.
Belmont's Revenge: level structure. Plant Castle? WTF?
Castlevania II: No comment.
Order of Shadows: the fact that Sprint is keeping me from downloading this.
Harmony of Dissonance: "damsel in distress" storyline, lack of interesting characters, simplistic gameplay, too easy, gaudy colors.
Dracula X: No comment.
Dracula X Chronicles: character designs, Symphony redesign.
Circle of the Moon: No merchant. Also, hard.
Castlevania 64/Legacy of Darkness: cut material, graphics, camera.
Portrait of Ruin: the reverse levels. However, I actually liked Sisters Mode.
Dawn of Sorrow: Julius mode payoff. Oh, and Arikado screaming "ow!"
-
I'm disappointed when Dracula only has one form to fight at the end, which happened in such games as Belmont's Revenge and Symphony of the Night. They were cool forms, but Dracula's supposed to be the greatest evil on this Earth. It feels anti-climatic unless the battle has at least two forms or phases.
-
When I found out that NOTHING HAPPENS after you complete furnishing the room in HoD.
Also when I found out that the Shining Armour, that you acquire after winning impossible battles in CotM, isn't really that special. I mean, it is the best armor in the game, but still it isn't worth all the effort of acquiring it.

Wow.... Is there anything in Castlevania you like? Are you even a fan?
-
My biggest dissapointed with the series was when Castlevania II: Simon's Quest was released. A terrible let down, although I started enjoying it some years later
2nd dissapointment was seeing Super Castlevania IV...yuck

I think it's actually a clever misdirection. The *real* treasure of the Battle Arena is the Unicorn card, which unless you use the trick that lets you replay areas of the Battle Arena at will, is a major pain to get. Not to mention that without a strategy guide, you wouldn't even know where to get it.
Allowing you to heal yourself, use the most powerful weapons (Holy Whip and Sword), and even allowing total invincibility, it's by far the best DSS card in the game. Whereas the Shining Armor, while nice, isn't that much better than the Dark Armor by any practical standard. Though, I find the Dark Armor almost as much work to get, given its extremely tiny drop probability >_<
-
When I found out that NOTHING HAPPENS after you complete furnishing the room in HoD.
There is something actually. If you put all the furniture into the room, then get the best ending Lydie will cling to Juste in the ending. :o
-

Really? It did that in mine, but I didn't see the one where she doesn't cling to him. She is easy. All it took was a couple pieces of furniture and she is all over him.

Awesome. I'll have to try that out whenever I decide to get the game. Hmm. I find I haven't actually answered the original question yet, but instead try to show how much I like CoD. I'll answer the question now. I was really disappointed in the fact that Trevor has such a small role in CoD. He SHOULD have been the main player, not some ex-lackie of Dracula, though Hector was cool too. Trevor also should have been mentioned at the end too. And when he got stabbbed I was like, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO," but then when I found out he lived I was like, "YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY," Anyway, that's all I have to say.
-

Q.F.T.
I'm amazed at how many people just don't get it. Here it is, a game that was NEVER RELEASED in the US and Europe, and all they can say is, "WTF OMGZORZ, I hav to UNLOCK SOTN!?!? DXC=Fail!!!!!!1111"
Other than that, probably the level design in Lament. That game could have been a real winner had they tried some platforming and vertical parts to the castle.
-
COD : Castle Dracula Design
it should have bene made liek the first stage of castlevania bloodlines, the way it tried to incorperated all of castlevania 1 intoa single level, hell the castle i know is linar but com on, every 3d vania cuts the cock tower and other crap out. machine tower isn;t a clock tower, tis not even part of dracul;a's cstle, the n64 castlevanias held true to the design for the most aspect.
-
I think the only thing that really makes me dissapointed is that CV 64 makes me nauseous so I can't really play it much.
Also, in DXC for Stage 7 they put "Moon Fight" instead of "The Nest" or "The Den" (The Den originally but changed to The Nest in DXC I guess?) for the music. Not that "Moon Fight" is bad, I just don't prefer it as much. Not a big deal though
-
I loved Moon Fight! :P
My biggest Castlevania disappointment would have to be...
...nothing, I guess? My small rants are overhauled by many good features about the series.
-
Biggest disappoints, by game:
Castlevania: None
Castlevania 2:
-The lack of bosses. The only two in the mansions (if you call them bosses) you can actually completely skip.
-Dracula. His worst form to date and the easiest.
Castlevania 3: None really. Maybe that they repeated bosses too many times instead of new ones. But then again, who cares cause it's CV3. ::winks::
SCV4: None.
Castlevania Legends: The entire damn game.
Castlevania Adventure (and Revenge): Meh, none really.
Rondo of Blood: The damn anime cutscenes. I've always liked the story but the cutscenes just make me laugh.
SOTN: None.
HoD:
-Too easy
-Way more of a SOTN rehash then the other games that followed.
-"Best friend/good guy that betrays you" storyline getting a weee bit old.
-Music quality
CotM:
-The screen was kinda dark but I was so busy getting my ass kicked, I didn't notice for too long. XD
AoS:
-The soundtrack.
Lament:
-"I'll Beat You...to a PULP!!" XD XD XD Worst dialogue in CV history, that game.
-Too many repeated rooms.
DoS:
-The ending: way to happy go lucky and ridiculous "OMG, Soma and Mina totally love each other!!!" for my taste. Waaay too kiddie. The 'Bad' Ending should really be canon if it's not.
-Anime artwork and anime esque cutscenes/dialogue as a whole. 50 damn mentions of two people liking each other is just beating a dead horse.
CoD:
-Dracula's castle, hands down.
-The stages seemed too long and too repetitive. If the area's are gonna be huge, put more into them. And less empty.
Castlevania-DXC:
ROB remake: For now, honestly, nothing. I love the changes made. Moon Fight didn't even bother me. And since Opus 13 is unlockable, I have nothing to gripe about now.
SOTN: Again nothing. I'm in the minority as I actually am not bothered by the VA or script change.
Original RoB: Have yet to actually play.
Castlevania 64/Legacy:
-The fact that this game hasn't been remade. There's way too much potential for a great game here to just let it go to waste.
PoR:
-The second set of portraits. I was really hoping they'd be completely changed (like brand new stages) instead of just inverted versions of the original.
-Sister mode sucked.
-
I don't think anyone else mentioned it, which surprises me, so I will;
Old Axe Armour Mode.
Seriously, that last mode was so hyped (before we knew what it was). What could it be? A John and Eric coop mode, Simon (considering it was the 20th anniversery), or perhaps a Wind mode? Nope, you get a totally character-less, meaningless and extremly boring mode. The other modes weren't really much better (excluding the REAL mode).
-
In Reply To #46
I think the point of the extra modes was to do them on Hard mode Lv. 1.
I still haven't seen anyone beat Axe armor on Lv. 1.

Really? I liked Old Axe Armor mode. Sure, there could have been something better, like a Wind mode or even Death/Drac mode, but still, Old Axe Armor was a bit of change.
-
Rabid Youtube Castlevania freaks in general. They seem to tear apart every minor thing and blow it out of proportion. It's not just disappointing, but it's disheartening to know that people can be so disgustingly pessimistic.
Also, I liked PoR quite a bit, even moreso than DoS. I can understand that people may not feel otherwise, but it's strikes me as a bit odd that this could be considered their biggest disappointment in the series, a series that harbored the likes of Castlevania Legends and Adventure.
Oh well. To each his own, I suppose.
-
Not really the most dissapointing thing ever, but I think they should have included Bloodlines into Portrait of Ruin. I know a lot of people who are really into new Metroidvania style CV and haven't played anything before SotN. So, throwing in Bloodlines would have been a nice touch for newer and classic fans of the series
-
Yeah, they really screwed up by NOT adding Bloodlines to PoR. People woulda been a lot more forgiving :o
-
In Reply To #51
People say that PoR has absolutely NOTHING in common with Bloodlines.
but since Bloodlines traveled all about Europe, the Paintings were a very nice throwback, especially 13th Street (And not just because they used "Iron Blue Intention" as the background music) Late Victorian London-like cities reflect very close to bloodline's time frame.

Well i wonder if the abandon'd castle is "Castlevania" since the other castle is labled "dracula's Castle" since its a fact Vlad Tepes had many castles during his wars.
CV2: needs bosses and a real dracula it should have jsut named the boss death and added sycthes
SOTN: Dracula, bot battles are to freaking easy, i used a gameshark to make the game a challenge...
CV64/legacy: not much to complain about i throughly enjoyed the games, could ahve used mroe vocal dialog
DOS: happy ending shouldn;t have bene the real ending, i had no issues witht he anime.
-

Squeezing a 320x224 game like Bloodlines into the DS's 256x192 screen would have made an already dumpy game even uglier. I definitely wish it could have been done, but at that cost, it wouldn't have been worth it.

"Dracula's Castle" is just another name for Castlevania, or vice versa. They're one and the same.
-
Everytime IGA announces a new Castlevania that isn't a Chronicles title. The guy does really well with Chronicles titles...everything else is too hit-or-miss to be anything but a disappointment.
-

You're right, Symphony's way too easy. Mind sharing what kind of codes you used? Did you lower Al's level or something?

Yeah, that Cock Tower is a real Dick isn't it? :-\

My biggest let-down is probably the storyline of Dawn of Sorrow, along with the anime artwork for the two games.
My second one is Circle of the Moon. Everyone hyped it up so much for me ( I didn't play it until after AoS and others), and when I got my hands on it, I didn't even feel like grinding past the third boss...
-

CotM rules. The bosses were harder than the post SotN games. Of course, Nathan was controlled like the older games mixed with the newer ones somewhat so thats probably what did some of it. The system was pretty cool too.
I was disappointed in Dawn's gimmick on teh DS, stupid magic circle. And Im disappointed in all the games not on Consoles cuz I don't own really any handhelds.
-
In Reply To #59
You're right, CotM was awesome. The bosses were extremely hard, though, considering the lack of any real recover because potions are hard to comeby, and there's no merchant. That's why I STILL haven't beaten Drac's final form...

How about breaking the wall in the room directly above the merman room in Castlevania Chronicles, expecting a pot roast and getting a few dozen flea men, instead?

PoR's misspelling of Richter Belmont among other misspellings - it was something they could've easily fixed.
Change of dialogue and VA in PSP SotN - It was not so much that they changed the voice actors that bugged me but the fact that the changed script didn't sound any better and in some cases even worse.
I kind of miss the old English lines from the original, Maria's ,,What do you here'' and Alucards ,,Tis best if I were to disappear forever (or something like that).
Dracula: I didn't think he was bad at all but I still prefer his VA from the original.
Maria: I like both the original and new voice actress, the new one does suit her better and she sounds her age this time but I loved how she sounded in the original too.
Richter: He does in my opinion put much emotion into his lines a does a pretty good job as Richter but the voice doesn't suit him,at least not his older self.He did do a pretty good job so I'm not dissapointed with the change.
Alucard: His change was for the worse with his lines as well as his VA, which in my opinion didn't suit him. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against a soft spoken voice as I own the Japanese version of PSX NitM and I love it.
I could've lived with a Lestat like voice or something more VH D like but I can't get used to Alucard sounding like Prince all the time and that comes from a fan of Prince of Persia.
Shaft:I like both of his VA and his lines from both versions,he is one of the few that I actually liked the change of.
DeathLike Shaft I like both his VA and his new script, although I missed some of his original lines was pretty good.
SuccubusBoth her VA were good and her new lines as well as the original, she still sounded enchanting although I feel her original voice actress did slightly better in this departement.
So I actually did like the most VA but my main disapointment would be with Alucard and Dracula, although the latter wasn't really a disappointment.
That they had the nerve to add a cripled Maria to PSP SotN: Seriously, they gave her some item crashes, doves of doom and...... nope that's pretty much it. As opposed to her Saturn version, she has less moves and is made weaker in my opinion.
Now I know some of you may say that SotN is too easy and that she at least provides some challenge, while I agree with the first I don't with the latter. Besides,we have Richter mode for that so there was no reason to make Maria a helpless little girl.
I have no problems beating the game with her and the moves she has are pretty cool but she could've been much more. It could be the fact that she is one of my favorite characters and I've allways viewed her as one of the strongest females and not just in Castlevania universe.
SotN(PSP) game freezes and auto - restarting of your PSP:This can be pretty annoying at times, especially with a speed run.
I'm done with my rant.
As for the Castlevania in CoD not looking like it should, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it because it wasn't complete and in a weak state? I could be wrong though as it was quite some time since the last time I played CoD.
-
Definitely Dracula in Simon's quest. He didn't look anything like Dracula. He looked like Death, and he threw sickles, like Death. When you start throwing those firebombs on his ass he can't do ANYTHING, he just sits there and takes until he's dead. WTF is that shit!?

I think my first game (normal mode) I was at around level 59.
I went through the lil enemy rush thing a couple of times. If you want to chance it, you can also use the bone thing, where you wait til hes in range and you turn into a skeleton and throw bones at him, hoping for the big bone.
-
I was disappointed in Dawn's gimmick on teh DS, stupid magic circle.
Actually I thought that was pretty cool. It was a pain in the ass to have to pick up the stylus but I thought that was a really cool and creative way to work in the touch screen and make the boss encounters a little more challenging.

I think its the final dss card on top, and the 2nd to last dss card on teh bottom. I can't remember the cards, been a long while. Just use the dss glitch where you cast and go into themenu and check which cards it is, I'm pretty sure the two I named are right but.... my memory is pretty bad.

I said the glitch thing kind of wrong, just in case you don't know. Cast, before the spell is finished, go in and switch to any card, even ones yo don't have, and then leave the menu, and you'll cast it.
-
I went through about five bosses in DoS, frantically fumbling trying to take out the stylus from its slot on my fat DS before the binding window closed, before I watched the animated opening again.
Thinks to self, "huh. Soma just uses his finger."
Uses finger rather than stylus for the rest of the game. Smacks forehead.

I used my finger too. It is much quicker and 4 of my right hand nails are long for playing guitar. If I do use the stylus I hold it between my fingers or in my mouth when I play. It isn't a big deal.

Purchasing Curse of Darkness, then playing, then beating it. Best moment was when I traded it in and used the credit towards Dragon Quest VIII.

LOL! ;D I had not seen that. Classic.
Well to me, the biggest dissapointmment was when I opened up the Nintendo Power issue that contained a preview of DoS along with the artwork of Soma and Yoko. And then I saw the hideous anime style they used.
Also, the Furnished room in HoD dissapointed me as well.

Aww man that's a shame bro I loved that game it has some tough bosses and the levels are all quite challenging. I also like how it's so dark. Y'know out of the 3 GBA titles I think COTM is the only one to really get that old school castlevania feel. When I first got it I couldn't put it down, I've even beat all the diff. modes of play. The DSS cards were awesome and I love just pulling out a gun if a boss is being an ass and bein all like "fuck you bitch!" and blowing them away.

I think they changed the VAs in order to make the English voices consistent between Rondo and SotN.
I don't get the script change though. Meh....I kinda like the original better. It had a lot of quotable lines. For me humanity will always be a "Miserable little pile of Secrets".
Although it's kinda funny that the guy that did the voice of Dracula in the redub is the same one that did the voice of Alucard in Hellsing.

drawing the seals in Dawn of Sorrow. I had to repeat each several times to get it right, so somtimes I died from it. I didn't try to get the better endings because of it, but I am gonna go back and do it someday. Do you have to draw the seals in Julius mode?

No you don't draw seals in Julius mode.

You're right, CotM was awesome. The bosses were extremely hard, though, considering the lack of any real recover because potions are hard to comeby, and there's no merchant. That's why I STILL haven't beaten Drac's final form...
Just keep leveling up, Dracula's cake if you go at him level 75 or higher.
-

I thought the seals were really easy to draw, even if you weren't using a stylus.

Thanx, but I already beat him about a month ago at somewhere near level 40. Problem was I was depending too much on the summoning thing, which I suck at, so an idiot could've solved my problem, and I did! ;D

Winnar.
Also Harmony of Dissonance.
And to a lesser extent LoI, DXC, DoS, PoR.
Generally the fact that pathetic game designer IGA has taken the series hostage to fulfil his limited, unimaginative, illiterate, lazy, destructive 'vision' to the series.
Konami, please give the series to absolutely ANYONE else. They can't possibly produce something worse then CoD, and it may kick off some actual creativity in the series again.

I agree, how can you seriously say that recent CV's dont have creativity? Look at the circus portraits of PoR. Not only that, but look at entering portraits in general! To say that any of the recent CV's weren't creative is a lousy excuse for the fact that you just don't like IGA.
-
Entering the portraits is the same idea as entering the teleporters in loi's hub. The stuff in the circus (walking on walls/ceiling) was already done in bloodlines.

I don't know, I mean, I enjoyed DoS, LoI, and PoR. I just don't think they lived up to many of the games that preceded them. (Won't say anything about DXC, since I don't actually own it yet).
Everyone who's read at least some of my posts should know of my general distaste for CoD by now...I will say, though, that there are worse CV titles out there.

I concur, Death was always what I looked forward to in castlevania games, he was always a badass... Honorable punkass mentioning goes to Castlevania 2, you don't really even have to fight him... Dracula in Simons quest looked more like Death, I think he even threw sickles too.
Yeah, and what the hell was that Hot wheels thing he turned into in SoTN? it was like a Metal shrimp with a bear head.

Megaman 8 bit games are easy man, alls you do is just take out the easiest guy first and then go after the other bosses and use their weaknesses against them. Although I prefer just blowing them all away with the Plasmacannon.

Circle Of The Moon

Portrait of Ruin has to be it, as there is so much in that game that made me so sad. :'(
1. The Storyline. Or rather, how the storyline was presented. The 'anime' fashion in which it was told killed what could have been pretty dramatic and deep. (The little bit in sister's mode could have just been presented in a flashback or something during the game.)
2. The bosses where too easy, though I still love the final boss. (Until anime witch #49 said something about how their team work was great however, failed in their attempts. Everytime she spoke, I wanted her to die.)
3. Good lord, I hated the artwork. (And I actually like anime if done well.)
4. The rooms kinda got boring and the second set of portraits where a let down. Kinda felt ripped off.
5. I liked the idea of switching between to characters and such but I felt like it could have been put to better use in the game than it was.

Pretty much. The only Castlevania so far that I've genuinely disliked was Curse of Darkness.
-
In Reply To #110
Agreed. Nearly every other CV game I've played had a redeeming charm to it, whether it be difficulty (Classic CVs), innovation (AoS, DoS), cinematics (LoI, 64), or combat (LoI). CoD did not meet my expectations in any of those ways.
-
Cod has some pretty epic bosses. :o
Minotaur, Dullahan, Death, Dracula's first form for example.
-
In Reply To #112
And a fairly excellent soundtrack. Toccata Into Blood Soaked Darkness and Garibaldi Temple come to mind.
-
Ok, you guys got me there. The soundtrack was good (if not for that one synthesized instrument that I can't name but could live without), and some of the bosses were kinda cool. But when it came down to how much fun I had, how much of a new experience I had, the (almost non-existent except for a few bosses here and there) challenge, the combat system (Dynasty Warriors without huge hordes of enemies), and the (for the most part, forgettable) script, it just didn't capture my interests...
And before anyone calls me a horrible person, these are my opnions, not what I hold as absolute fact, but the beliefs I have surrounding those facts. Basically, don't e-kill me...
-
Despite Jonathan and Charlotte being my favorite *possible* couple, I was a bit disappointed in PoR, but what really made me sad was CoD.
-
The galamoth fight of SOTN when you had the lightining eating crown.
They really didnt think that one through.
-
The biggest disappointment for me was Richter's sprites. They weren't even close to matching the Ayami Kojima art. For me the art plays a big part, as does the sprites. If it looks more serious then I value them as such. Castlevania is a serious game, not this anime sort of thing.
-
One of the things I like about Castlevania is that even the worst of its games have awesome soundtracks.
I also agree that CoD had some cool bosses. If only it weren't for the everything else...
-
In Reply To #117
There's a good reason for that. Richter's sprites were made in an Anime style, before Kojima even started working on CV games.
-

They could have redone his sprites in Symphony to reflect Kojima's new design, though. They probably wanted to play up the nostalgia for Rondo, though.
-
In Reply To #120
Well, in the beginning of the game he looks right, because it's the end of Rondo, so it makes sense he has that outfit. They probably just got lazy with making new sprites for fighting him, because thats the only time you see him again in action. As for him as playable, he's just a secret extra character...they didn't make a story for him, why would they waste time on a whole new sprite? Too much effort for something so small, me thinks.

- The biggest disapointment for me was having DXC be on the PSP. I only have a DS.
Dang. Someone else answered mine for me. I haven't really been all that disappointed with the games. Certainly not Curse of Darkness, though I was almost tempted to automatically toss my vote in for it here. Considering what Konami had to offer in LoI, CoD wasn't really much of a letdown since my expectations were set pretty low at the time. M'well, c'est la vie.
-
My biggest dissapointed with the series was when Castlevania II: Simon's Quest was released. A terrible let down, although I started enjoying it some years later
2nd dissapointment was seeing Super Castlevania IV...yuck
Funny, I actually liked those and Castlevania IV wasn't that bad, you actualy mad your way to the castle and then changed maps and had another row of levels in front of you. It's big and long, I liked it.
My biggest letdowns: Anime/manga art for castlevania, anime and castlevania both are great on their own but they just don't mix. Castlevania should stay with the old skool gothic style.
and in COD the hector vs isaac wich is supposed to be the main plot during the largest part of the game is not explored enough. There should have been more battles.
Suggestions: make future 3d castlevania's more like the n64 titles, they were great games that were underappriciated because konami rushed certain features.
Guess that's all I can complain about.
-
The Anime look... it was horrible for Rondo, then again in i DoS and PoR... Bring back Kojima!
-
If DXC is any indication, she is.
-
My biggest letdown is maybe Curse of Darkness and Lament of Innocence. Those two aren't games I hate, or my least favorites, it's just that they had so much potential that went down the drain. There were many great things about them, but many bad things, and it's disappointing to see all of this waisted potential, knowing they could have been so much more, if only they were designed with more common sense.
-
A quick
-
I'd have to go with Lament of Innocence. I remember playing Devil May Cry back in 2001 and thinking "This is what they should do with a 3d Castlevania!", then getting Lament of Innocence and realizing that essentially that's what Konami did, and the result was incredibly disappointing. Lament for me forsook almost everything I liked about Castlevania. There was little detail, the enemies were repetitive and lamely designed, the gameplay was monotonous, the story uninteresting; it was a huge letdown. It featured neither the great gameplay of the classic, pre-SoTN 'vanias or the RPG-esque collecting/forging/magic/souls features of the GBA and DS varieties. The music was good, and the atmosphere is right, but everything else left me cold.
Curse of Darkness suffers from many of the same issues, but it was an improvement from my perspective as the weapon/armor forging, stealing, Innocent Devil familiars, and even the silly chair collecting made the bland combat more forgiveable. The enemies in CoD are still not up to series muster, but there was a greater variety to them, and the backgrounds and level design, though still wanting, were also improved. Storywise, however, CoD is just plain silly. St. Germaine is easily one of the most pointless and unnecessary characters in all of Castlevaniadom.

Btw this might be stupid of me to point out but I've always though that the monk from POR resembles the vampire hunter/monk from castlevania 64.
-
Oh yeah, CoD just gave me the creeps. In a negative manner, that is. Such waste of playtime. Though I like corpsey and rasetz. :3
-
CoD had the ideas, but the execution...good lord. It was years behind the times.
Still, I appreciate what they were aiming for. Dark, gloomy, morbid to offset the bright and happy DS CVs.
-
In Reply To #133
Dark, gloomy, morbid? I missed to find any of these. Really. I mean, almost all of the rooms look exactly the same, there is no detail in the map design in the whole game. The enemies are un-castlevania-ish, there are only few models with just different colours/clothing, which is pretty much, what they did with the mapping too. The charakters are all... well, crap. Actually I like Isaac. And the game has the least-spectacular Death bossfight.
The devil forging idea is pretty cool, the soundtrack rocks as always, but that changes nothing about the fact, that the throughout gameplay sucks. ...and slow Hector is being slooow.
-
Nah, I was just going by what they advertised, the artwork, and the soundtrack. That's why I said the execution sucked.

and I was a little dissapointed that that ending didn't have the puns of the horror movie star's names in it like the original version did. but it didn't really bnother me too much, because it was quite a gaming acheivement (first time in my entire life)
now, bring on CV III for the VC...
So it did'nt? I've not beaten the NES Classic GBA version, just the original for NES. (came to Grim without dying, and to franken without damage o_o) I don't like Drac in CV 1. He is damn hard sometimes :P And CVIII has a few diffrent endings so you have some playi'n to do, but since it's the best game ever made it's nothing to be sad about :D
-
wait, ......CV3 has multiple endings?! crap, I've only beaten it once, with Sypha....... crap crap crap. Oh well, atleast I can beat it now, damn NES kept on making me stuck...... way back when.
-
Grant is my fave. Actually he's the only character, who can change his direction while in mid-jump, which is a real easing. And he can climb walls and ceilings, I mean, how cool's that?
-
............ Alucard can fly.... doesn't that beat changing direction in jumps and climbing walls?
-
Nope, because once you run out of hearts you plunge down and die if you're over a pit. Grant's climbing is cost-less, and in the original version he can snipe enemies from the walls/ceilings with daggers, also cost less.
-
oh sure, but flying can get you past areas alot easier as well as let you skip a couple of spots, like in one of those speed runs.
-
Also, Grant can use subweapons, which Alucard can not. Furthermore, Alucard's hellfire only does minor damage. Face it, Alucard is completely useless. /(T

In Alucard's defense, you can still transform into a bat if you're knocked off a ledge, so...he has at least one advantage over Grant.
-

no wai! Sypha owns all bosses.
-
Grant's ability to climb walls and his faster movement make him an overall faster character than Alucard. Also he's a lot more fun to play.
-
Wow, much debate here. I have some things to add. Kale, I'm surprised you didn't know of CV3's multiple endings. And bout grant Vs. Alucard, theyre both pretty crappy, IMO. Not so much Grant as it is Alucard. I just have trouble controlling Grant. Everytime I climb a wall, I fall off and die. I also get stuck in tight places, jump too far, or too high and it creates mishaps. Dagger is tough, but way too short. Alucard... that game just insulted the awesome image of Alucard we have today, no question.
-

Ironic that taking Syphia as your partner is the easiest way to play the game yet results in the best ending.
But too bad that you can only take one path with her.
unless would it work with the password that lets you start the game with her?
-
Alucard... that game just insulted the awesome image of Alucard we have today, no question.
But without that game Alucard and possibly sotn wouldn't even exist..

Yeah most likely. I think Iga said it was his decision to scrap bloodletting or whatever the game was before he joined and go with a hero from his favorite game, cv3 that could be still alive after several hundreds of years.

Well..... I used to own CV3, and after glitching about 10 times in a row at that hopping statue boss thingy, I gave up on it. It was only recently that I got a rom and finally got past it.
So I was satisfied, and I just stpped playing, after all... Sypha and Trevor is my main reason for liking CV3.
(The glitch was even after beating the boss, the timer kept going and the ball thing never appeared, the stage never finished.)

hunh, sounds like a prob with the cart. Did you clean it to see if that would fix it? I little rubbing alcohol on a qutip or two always does the trick for me.

I was extremely disappointed with the Portrait of Ruin soundtrack. When a new Castlevania game is announced 80% of my excitement is for the new soundtrack. I really miss Michiru Yamane's incredible classical and rock tracks like Dance of Gold/Pales and The Tragic Prince. Nowadays the soundtracks seem to have abandoned the baroque and rock stylings which so suit Castlevania in favor of fairly lifeless upbeat trance/disco tracks. I wish they'd stop bringing in "guest" composers too, just let her do her own thing please.
Alternatively, let Soshiro Hokkai do another soundtrack. I know many fans disliked the HoD soundtrack due to the low sample quality, but it was excellent music and was quite possibly the most sophisticated composition ever featured in a video game.
I was also disappointed by the bright atmosphere of Portrait of Ruin. To me, Castlevania should embody gloom/melancholy/beauty/elegance and all that. There was really nothing sublime about PoR. Dawn of Sorrow had some really beautiful areas, so it's not impossible to keep the Castlevania feel even with the terrible anime art.
-
My most disappointing Castlevania moments:
SOTN: After all the cool stages and bosses the fight with Dracula was too easy. I just use the shield rod and the medusa shield.
COD: The empty halls more than anything. Most rooms/paths look the same from one to the next. Kinda hard to tell where you came from and where you are going. Even going through a new area I have a feeling of Dejavu.
CV 2: Playing after 10 years thinking maybe I just didn't like it because I was young and couldn't appreciate what they were going for. And still not really liking the level design at all years later.
DOS & AOS: The idea of Dracula's soul being passed to a high school student didn't sit well with me. I did really enjoy the endings where Soma turned evil and hoped they would ending up being canon.
CV on Game Boy: I enjoyed these about as much as going to the dentist or the doctor. I knew it was going to be bad, but it just got worse.

With you about the bright color scheme for PoR. I kind of swallowed it though following HoD and the two Sorrow titles since they kind of needed brighter imagery to stand out on the GB/DS screens. Then again, Dawn of Sorrow really seemed to push it over the limits for me. I swear the garden area made my eyelids flutter.
Definitely can't complain about Portrait's music though. "Silent Prison," "Jail of Jewels," "Hail to the Past," and "Behind the Gaze" all stood out as worthy additions to the Castlevania libretto library, while "The Hidden Curse" easily ranks among classic pieces like "Beginning" and "Bloody Tears." Do bear in mind though, I was pleasantly surprised by the sounds of PoR after the somewhat forgettable soundtrack for Dawn and Michiru Yamane's thoroughly lackluster score for Curse of Darkness. Granted, "Abandoned Castle" and "Mortvia Aquaduct" imbed themselves firmly into memory, but to me the only good piece on the whole soundtrack was "Garibaldi Temple." It may have been rooted in "Prayer For A Tragic Queen" from Bloodlines, but it was still the most original and fitfully beautiful piece found in the game.
Speaking of music though, I've always agreed that HoD had an excellent and highly original score. Regardless of the sound chip available at the time, practically every piece not only stood out on its own, but also seemed to follow a central theme of ambient urgency, unease, even malevolence at times. "Successor of Fate" is truly one of the most inspiring cues dedicated to a central character (cliched and uninspired though that character in question may be). And "Chapel of Dissonance" had to be one of the loveliest numbers to grace a CV game since the grandiose pieces from Symphony of the Night. Yes, another score from HoD's composer would be a very welcome prospect. Certainly more welcome than any further experimental Baroque beat-boxing from Yamane-san.

Wouldn't shorting out the circuits...... sort of not made it work at all anymore?
-
^It doesn't just straight up short it out, what actually happens is that the water creates a small electrical disturbance (since water is such a good conductor of electricity) which can force the cart to play (hence why you normally have to normally blow on it more than 1 time) but over time will damage the cart and may short it out completely. It looks like that's what happened. With the old front loading nes's that get dirty easy it's best to just clean the carts and console often probably about once a month as opposed to blowing into the carts.

The compositions in Portrait's soundtrack are fine by themselves, but they frequently fail to suit the visual context and atmosphere of the areas in which they play. Think of the Abandoned Mine in Symphony; Yamane could have written the best rousing action tune of her career there, but it wouldn't have fit the atmosphere nearly as well as the music that does play there. Portrait is pretty much all rousing action tunes, and they eventually blend together into an incessant droning.

Yeah I agree, the song on 13th street is the only one that really sticks in my head from that one.
And that's because it's a remix of an already fine tune. It doesn't really fit the "evening in the bakery" stage too much. It'd fit a more industrial oriented stage much better, like an abandoned tank factory or something.
-
Hm, I thought the new IBI remix had a bit of that 'London at night' feel to it. It must be the beginning or something.
Most of the CV-remixes in PoR weren't too good. I liked the Kings Valley II remixes, though. :D

wow, I've never heard of snes carts having that problem before. Was there anything the cart was exposed to or anything that came in direct physical contact with it that could have caused it to need the water to conduct enough electricity to play properly? I'd also be careful too spitting in it as eventually it could short the cart out too. :)

You know that's true, actually. Portrait does have a surplus of action-oriented cues. I really didn't even notice that until I plowed through with Richter & Maria and heard some of the pieces more closely together. Of course, it really is most evident in the final four painting stages where the only respite from the hard-hitting numbers are "Sandfall" and "Behind the Gaze." Apart from that, the environments really don't seem all that suited to such active music. - Something I think even Dawn accomplished well.
- One thing I can't help but point out, "Troubled Times" rocks. Primarily because it sounds to me like it came straight out of CV II - Belmont's Revenge. Repetitive, simple, but I'll be damned if that cue doesn't fit the Nest of Evil perfectly.
