Welcome to the Great Easter Egg Hunt! Lords of Shadow will be launching in just a couple weeks, and we're already starting to see little Easter Eggs popping up in the trailers and other media. This is the place for fans to chronicle all of Mercury Steam's subtle and maybe not-so-subtle nods to the Castlevanias of yesteryear. Here's a few examples...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Easter Egg --Castlevania IV SNES
The Combat Cross can be used to grapple the environment and swing across pits.
Easter Egg --Order of Ecclesia DS
Gabriel was raised by a religious institution, much like Shanoa.
Easter Egg --Legacy of Darkness N64
One of the Lords of Shadow goes by the name "Cornell".
Easter Egg --CV II: Simon's Quest NES
Gabriel's Armor is quite similar to Simon's American Box Art
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No need for me to have all the fun here --let's see what else everybody can find. ;D
-
The big Wargs look like the Wargs at the Castle Entrance in Symphony of the Night.
(although Wargs in any game look like that, so...)
-
you know this thread will explode with posts once we get to play the full game, only 11 days til launch.
-
There is also Wygol Cemetary, also from OoE.
-
Awesome idea for a thread, can't wait to find out how much of this stuff there is. :D
-
Olrox and Brauner
-
Olrox and Brauner
where did you find that out?
-
Within that huge Lords of Shadow thread there's a pic of 'em.
They look more like movie nosferatu monsters, and do not at all resemble their darksuit-wearing original counterparts.
-
I'm staying out of this thread..
-
Castlevania 2 had werewolves you fought at the beginning just like the demo and you had to walk through a forest all the way to a lake.

I searched for their pictures, I even watched a 7:35 Japanese trailer full of spoilers...curses!
and I still did not notice them, until someone posted a picture of them...and your right, the only thing similar to their games are their name and race IMO.
a bit disappointed I must say

This ^ :o
-
Am I wrong?
I just went to play it again to be sure and if you go all the way to the right you fight some werewolves but there are also skeletons. As you make your way, you come a cross a lake and a broken bridge.
-
You are correct. Hmm.
-
Ha, that's pretty subtle. I like it!
Though, I think that whole Order thing referencing OoE is stretching it a bit.
-
nevermind
-
One of the cemeteries is named after Wygol village from OoE, at least, it's referenced in concept artwork.
There is also Wygol Cemetary, also from OoE.
-
When Gabriel asks about "the guardian of the Lake" the villager responds. "In the forest" that's what "Transylvania" means :D
-
"Land beyond the forest."
-
Guys, it doesn't have to be an exact reference. You can submit subtle nods, things you've seen before in the series, etc.
Let's make this a fun thread. ;)
-
I remember Rugal saying that Gabe's whip is made by Rinaldo Gandalfi
-
Lessee... in the few screenshots of a swamp level, there were the hands that come up from the ground to grab you like in CV4 (or Rondo?).
The goblins throw little bombs like those bag-head guys in Bloodlines.
That sorta-kinda-Egyptian level with all the beam balancing is much like the aquatic ruins stages of Dracula's Curse and CV4, what with all the waterfalls.
One video mentioned that Frankenstein made the machine tower, so maybe the Creature is in after all? (They earlier denied the old Universal monster bosses like the Mummy, but maybe they changed their minds?)
Death (or Deaths) in one shot of what appears to be a violent storm on Mars. Maybe this game puts DooM in the canon?
Necromancer not only kinda looks like Death, but also like the Necromancer bosses in CotM and SNES Drac X. Maybe Death is his demon form since he's a Lord of Shadow?
Cornell has a hammer, like the Cyclops. Yeah.
Crystal subweapon sounds like it kinda functions like the Rosary in old games.
Colossi bosses sorta reminiscent of the large golems in Haunted Castle and other games?
Maybe-Dracula (that dark-haired guy) is seen wearing a mask and black robe in Kojima's trailer, almost exactly like Drac's form in Simon's Quest.
-
Necromancer looks extremely similar to Shaft's Ghost. He even has that orb-looking thing in the middle of his chest.
-
where did you find that out?
There was a picture of the two buff vamps labeled Olrox and Brauner
-
Necromancer not only kinda looks like Death, but also like the Necromancer bosses in CotM and SNES Drac X. Maybe Death is his demon form since he's a Lord of Shadow?
Haha! I just posted something about that in the LoS thread:
Quote (from me):
The necromancer design has existed in CV before, and it's usually a robed hooded figure very VERY similar to Shaft's Ghost.
It has appeared in:
Castlevania: DraculaXX (SNES) on the regular (you fell off the pillars) Caverns/Swamp Stage:
(http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081206190816/castlevania/images/thumb/8/8b/Necromancer_Dracula_X.JPG/104px-Necromancer_Dracula_X.JPG)(http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/bosses/warlock.gif)
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
(http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081206191321/castlevania/images/a/ab/Necromancer_Circle_of_the_Moon.JPG)(http://media.strategywiki.org/images/6/6e/Castlevania_CotM_boss-Necromancer_%28first_form%29.gif)(http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/bosses/necro2.gif)
I suppose I 'could' see how people could confuse him with Death, however I think at this point he looks more like what the classic Necromancer's supposed to look like, than a version of Death. By now I expect Death to take up half the screen, haha.
END QUOTE
Hahaha. :P

It can't be proven until the story is told but I believe: Maria = Sarah from LoI. A poor soul caught up in a plan/conspiracy to give the Belmont the *push* to do what the antagonist needs him to do. ;)
The black haired guy everyone thinks may be Dracula sorta looks like Mathias.
Gabe is a knight: so was Leon, the *first* Belmont in the other CV timeline.
-

^ This catched my attention too, specially since in the profile, Gabriel is in some way related to the Cronqvist family... Maybe Mathias/Dracula vs. Gabriel? :O
And after reading this article, made me think how some scenes in Lords of Shadows kinda reminds me to SCV IV but in 3D :)

i dont actually agree with many of their points, especially the combat one. i really think we should try to see los as standing on its own when it comes to its setting, mood, and etc. i think they're all pretty distinct from past castlevanias.
-
Does someone have the picture of the Black Knight when that lords of shadow art box was given to kotaku and there was a hidden picture there that show this evil looking creature.
I remember seeing the full picture here and it kinda looked like dullahan.
-
Maybe-Dracula (that dark-haired guy) is seen wearing a mask and black robe in Kojima's trailer, almost exactly like Drac's form in Simon's Quest.
That is a very good point that I had not noticed before.
Perhaps Dracula wants the Mask(s) to fully revive himself or something, which would be somewhat similar to the story of Simon's Quest..
-
Vassago is similar to sword master

-
the fact that the menu is a book is like Castlevania 64.
-
The sound effects of battle I've heard in trailers (whipping, monsters dying and stuff) are incredibly awesome and satisfying, just like in CV4.
What? Don't tell me you didn't love the sound of whipping the floating eyes or of whipping the poltergeist furniture.
-
SLOGRA! for the WIN! :-D
-
Metal Gear Solid Jingle, when you're trying to sneak into the Cook's Kitchen. :D
-
Best song on the soundtrack.
-
Haha! Dorin just can't catch a break. In PoR he's attacked by vampires, too. What a loser.
-
I'm not sure if it's just me or it was intentional but I think there was a shoutout to Castlevania Resurrection in the game, one of the dead knight is named Victor.
-
That's right, I noticed that.
-
Was that the dreamcast game that got shut down?
-
yup
-

Victor is a pretty common name. Do you think it was intentional? If it is thats a great Easter egg.
-
I think it was intentional.
They 'could have' used Victor to describe Frankenstein... but they didn't. They chose a different name for the old mad scientist. Instead they chose it for one of the warriors.
Oh, in the Necromaner's Area, there are a lot of portals you jump into and out of. The description reads "..hundreds of mirrors that can transport you anywhere; such is the so-called 'Apreture Magic' from the Necromancers". It's a direct reference to Portal from the Orange Box, as the name of the technology for the Portal Gun comes from "Aperture Science". xD
-
They pulled a Portal reference? That's pretty funny. ;D
-
Two actually. They mentioned "The cake is not a lie" in another scroll (I posted it earlier).
-
One of the scrolls you get from a guard in the castle reads about the Bernhard family making a pact with a hellspawn and the building being possessed etc.... It goes on to say "but the fact that the castle may be a living entity may explain how, after centuries, no one has been able to create a complete map of it."
Sounds like he's describing Castlevania how Alucard explained it in sotn "a creature of chaos"
-
Does that mean Carmilla's Castle is actually Castlevania? o_O
-
Does that mean Carmilla's Castle is actually Castlevania? o_O
Perhaps. Castlevania may be the domain of the Lord of vampires. In Lords, it seems to be Carmilla. In Lament, it's Walter. And in most games, it's Dracula.
-
I'm just happy theres a castle somewhere in the game to be honest and that it eventually gets dark.
-
It's actually pretty cool when it gets dark... right when you're in the Castle.
Talk about bad timing.

Could you say this feels Castlevania now? O.o
-
One of the dead knight's scrolls mentions him failing to reach the tower above him, making him unable to see his love Iris
-
I don't understand that reference O.o
-
Iris is one of the hostages from Rondo of Blood.
-
Iris is the nun from Rondo of Blood.
Sure but how's that a reference? I mean, she was a nun with no boyfriend :P . if she is, nice nod, I really like some of these ones, especially the Bernhard thing, God this game is soooo canon 8)
-
http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Iris (http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Iris) I mixed up the bios, the nun's name is Tera, Iris was the daughter of a prominent doctor.
-
Could you say this feels Castlevania now? O.o
Yeah... too bad most of the game is not like that. :\
Still great game, though. :P
Yeah it's a Rondo name. And actually "Claudia" is a vampire girl from the Anne Rice novels (she was played by a very very young Kirsten Dunst in the "Interview with the Vampire" movie). But that's again, more of a slight name 'nod' than a reference, as Iris is.
-
Ah I almost for got this one...
Similar Events --NES Castslevania --Super Castlevania IV
During Chaper 2 at the end of the Labyrinth Entrance the floor collapses under Gabriel's feet and he falls into a massive pit.
Also happened to Simon CV1 Stage 3 and SCIV Library
-
Vincent Dorin (the shopkeeper from Portrait of Ruin) shows up in Wygol as a cowardly monk who holes himself up with life saving sacred relics that he isn't apt to share from the goodness of his heart.
So not much change from his original character. ;)
-
In Chapter 2-1 one of the brotherhood knight scrolls mentions the large beautiful tree that was the symbol of the forest. It was called "The Great Dekuh".
This is a similar reference to the Great Deku Tree, the guardian spirit tree of the forest of the Kokiri, in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Not sure if everyone else knows this, but the theme that plays at the beginning of Malphas' tower and the Fire Cemetary is a rearrangment of the ambient piece that plays at the beginning of Super Castlevania IV:
Castlevania Lords of Shadow Playthrough Part 23 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--7Q1LXDAv4#ws)
Super Castlevania 4: The Courtyard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEqhrCgEQuc#)
-
I heard that immediately.
I have to check the OST name, to see if it's the same name or similar. :)
-
Veros Woods?!?! EXCELLENT! :-D
-
Might be stretching it a little, but I couldn't help but think that this (http://tinyurl.com/24lobul) sounds like a jazzed up version of this (http://tinyurl.com/2bxleje).

When you're fighting against the giant ogre at the mountain fortress, there's a point at which you hurt one of its eyes and it only has one eye working. At this point, he starts to punch the ground a lot more and reminds me a hell of a lot of Balore from Aria of Sorrow. The face with the one eye, the punch attacks, etc.
-
Castlevania Aria of Sorrow Balore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PknNhRdJb-k#)
-
Put the konami code at the first level loading screen and you'll get a Simon belmotn sprite just doing your same movements on the corner of your screen! :D
-
Wish the ogre had lasers....
Dracolich's first appearance was in Circle of the moon (http://www.castlevaniacrypt.com/games/cotm/images/enemies/dragonzombie-3.gif)
-
He's also in PoR
Look under dragon zombie

I might be wrong, but I think Frankenstein's name is switched with someone else's in the old Universal picture (Henry, I think). That or some sequel has a Frankenstein descendant named Friederich. (Young Frankenstein reference?)
Also noticed that Brauner and Olrox use weapons that function exactly like the Cross Boomerang. Why they didn't give that to Gabriel is beyond me.
Zobek's final narration about Carmilla mentions that she will "cry bloody tears", not only a reference to the song but Carmilla's method of attack in Simon's Quest and Rondo.
Zobek at some other point refers to Carmilla's castle as the "demon's castle".
-
THIS.....
Super Castlevania IV (Walkthrough Stage 3) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUhMWx4B6No#)
....sounds very similar to the music you hear in several more peaceful areas in the game. The track name is for LoS is 'Waterfalls of Agharta'. I'm convinced that it's a more somber/melancholy version of it.
-
Yeah this was confirmed back when the first demo videos started to come out. Great tune rendition.
-
Dragon's Tail attack = Shoryuken!! (Rising Dragon).
It's the same attack BTW, loved it! ;D

I'd like to add three more easter eggs
First:
that time when baba yaga teleports gabe to the titan graveyard
she makes a reference to "...contra..."
CONTRA - The IRATE Gamer NES Review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwA0z-QdC70#)
Second:
When Zobek first meets gabriel and talks about the prophecy to him.
"It is written" part is a reference to
Zelda CD-I: The Faces of Evil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNpLXo55yfw#)
Third:
The part where Gabe kills Pan and says
"What am I fighting for?" is a reference to Mega Man x4
WHAT AM IFIGHTING FOR!!!!!!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LISmPmdUhYA#)
-
Speaking of Contra, there is another refrence to the game in the epilogue with a billboard for a movie(?) called "3 Lives"

The second two are a bit of a stretch.
-
I'm almost certain it was unintentional, but the skulls embedded in the landscape of the last few chapters bring the old Konami famicom game Getsufuu Maden to mind.
-
note a easter egg , but I notices some similarities between Gabriel , and Dracula ( Bram Stoker novel / movie verison)
1 like Gabriel, Dracula in the Bram stroker movie / novel wore red armor when he was human.
2 he was warrior for god like Gabriel
3 Bram stroker's Dracula was a hero when he was human, he wasn't evil
4 Satan appears to both of theme.
5 they both lost their belovedes
edit: Gabriel also has a similarity between a another fictional vampire name, Sir Francis Varney. like Gabriel Varney had killed a person who was closed to him, his own son. however unlike Varney, Gabriel had killed his wife unwillingly, while Varney had killed his son by accident in a fit of anger.

Get this! I'm not absolutely positive on this one, but I think that when you see the sun shining through the clouds while making your way through the first half of the game, might be a reference to the real actual sun. In our own solar system. That the Earth revolves around. It just gets deeper and deeper (bow-chicka-bow-wow)

Those are all just from the movie, not the book. But yeah, spot on.
-
Would be cool if he could turn into a werewolf too like in the movie.
