Title: So I finally played and beat Super Castlevania IV....
Post by: Archangel on October 01, 2010, 04:22:49 PM
After I reading about SC4 beeing LoS main inspiration, I thought to myself: DL it for your Virtual Console and finally play the game just like you had intended for like 3 years.

Said, done. Now, after three days, I was able to beat the game. Wow. Just.... wow. Now I can understand why this game is often called the best CV. Level design, Music/Mood... a damn masterpiece. I was suprised about the game´s difficulty: one of the most balanced I´ve ever encountered in a CV Game IMO.

Oh, all those wasted years! :-\

Well, after playing SC4, I´m even more exited about how LoS will play =D

Super Castlevania IV is hands down my favorite in the series. So good, I play it and Rebirth a lot on my Wii.

SCV4 was da bomb! Still is imo. Even after playing this game to death in the past, I can still return to it and relive the experience all over again. When Konami was planning another CV game I had hoped that it would be just like SCV4... Unfortunetly Bloodlines was ported over to the Genesis which eccentually killed all hopes of it being as impressive as SCV4. While I do enjoy Bloodlines and its story, the game itself couldv'e been so much more had it been put on the SNES.

Spoken for truth IMO.

yea man good thing Simon put all those hearts, A boomerang, a II, a III, that meat, and those two whip power ups on those invisible stairs or i would have never been able to beat Dracula. Now go play rondo of blood and tell us which one you like more.

How did you like the stage with the collapsing staircases? I remember SCREAMING in frustration. It's a bit trial and error for sure. The rest of the game is perfect.

I played the original Rondo on my PSP through DXC, if that counts ;) Well, I´m not quite sure, but I think I like SC4 more, just a little. Both are in my Top 5.

Haha..... yeah, that part was a pain. Played that stage the whole evening yesterday. That rotating blade was irritating, at first. But the real problem for me was the last segment with those flying rocks.... everytime I got to the last part, I was killed by those spikes on the ceilling >_> When I finally got to Slogra.... meh... I just went to bed.

Was I the only person who spent a minute trying to figure out what Soul Calibur IV had to do with Castlevania?

Haha, no. I actually went in here expecting to hear something about a secret, unlockable Castlevania character in Soul Calibur 4 or something.

Ha, I was thinking Soul Calibur 4 when i saw the subject ha. Though Super Castlevania 4 is a million times cooler. If it would of just said CV4, that would of clicked right away.

Interesting to hear a first-time review of CV4 after all these years. It definitely is a landmark CV title (much more so than SotN in my opinion). But anyway, I wish Castlevania: Dracula X for the SNES (AKA "Dracula XX") and Castlevania: Bloodlines for the Sega Genesis would come out on Wii's Virtual Console. Have you played either of these 16-bit era titles? Dracula X SNES is a more challenging, streamlined, and stylish take on Rondo of Blood (in my opinion), while Bloodlines is a unique globe-trotting affair that provides some of the most eye-popping scenarios outside of Super Castlevania IV.

Aside from its music, SCV4 is not that appealing to me.

CV2 and SCV4 are both fantastic games, and 2 of my favorites in the whole series. The atmosphere, music and gameplay are fantastic. Waaayyyy back when they announced LoS and said that CV2 and CV4 were the main inspirations, I got quite excited. After reading through the guide and seeing how LoS is laid out, the CV2/4 influences are very obvious, and that's a good thing IMO.

CV4 is one of those rare games that just never gets old.

I think it's slowly become my favorite, but its hard to say.

Since I start playing Castlevania-Games in ´07 (or very late ´06, I can´t remember) I played and loved every Game (but yeah, look for the "Castlevania´s you´ve finished" Thread for that....). I had played Chronicles 2 years prior and liked it very much. Too bad it lacked the "Whip in all directions"-Ability.... saved me more than once =O I wonder why it was so stripped down in the PS1-Game?

Interesting to read something like this. Actually, my collection just lacks CV: Bloodlines, which, like you, I like to play on the Virtual Console.... too bad I haven´t heard anything about a port :-/
I had Bloodlines on an PC Emulator for about a day.. but the controls were just terrible....but the game itself was cool. It liked the travel-aspect. Right now, I´m thinking about buying a Genesis just for this game (oh well, and another few)

About Dracula XX... never played the game, just watched some screenshots and read about it on the Dungeons Main Page. Oh yeah, I remember the 03- Dracula X - Bloodlines (http://'awesome remix of the first stage music

P.S.: Topic´s name changed to avoid further confusion ;P

Oh, yeah, the new/remixed music is also bumped up from Rondo of Blood, too. Dracula XX (Or Castlevania: Dracula X), is not simply a remake or port of Rondo of Blood, but rather a full reimagining. It has more of a pastel, painted art style and its new level design and controls are generally more deliberate than the meandering alternate paths and looser controls of Rondo of Blood. There are still alternate paths, but they're more strategic and tricky in how they play into the game. There's actually only one correct path that you have to figure out to rescue the two hostages, and depending on who you rescue, the game's bosses and endings change. And speaking of bosses, there are some new ones, and you cannot see them all in one playthrough.

The game is not as large as Rondo as a whole, but the individual length and variety of levels make up for that. As I said, Dracula XX is a reimagining, so there are gorgeous new levels like an Atlantis-themed one (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Stages/DXX/5a-1.gif (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Stages/DXX/5a-1.gif)), and the old ones like the burning city are completely redesigned and feature new graphical effects (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Stages/DXX/1-1.gif (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Stages/DXX/1-1.gif)). There are some really cool backgrounds in this game (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Screens/dxxh.png (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Screens/dxxh.png)). It's a game that's divided fans of the series (particularly because of Rondo's popularity), but I find it one of the most memorable. (It doesn't feature the multi-directional whip, but it does have the backflip and a variety of new and old Item Crashes).

I'll agree that the backgrounds in DXX were much better than any of Rondo's tiled, saturated, tilesets, but I honestly preferred the level design of Rondo. It was looser, but it never felt meandering to me. I thought it was the perfect blend while I thought the level design in DXX was pretty haphazard along with some bad enemy placement, and not because it was linear. While being prettier, I just found the room layouts to be more boring on a whole. As for the controls, Richter in DXX was just sluggish rather than tighter imo. The enemies weren't really balanced against the new slower way Richter controlled so I thought it just felt cheaper than Rondo.
