Title: May be getting Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles for X-mas.
Post by: Pentagram-cracker on October 26, 2010, 10:27:45 AM
Hi, I'm new here!  :)

Anyways I've never played Castlevania before, but I've always wanted to. My best friend is trying to get me a PSP along with Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles for X-mas so it'll be my very first Castlevania game (I was going to get Lords of Shadow for 360 but it didn't look at good as the old games, and there's no succubus. :( )

Anyways I'm getting that along with a Castlevania Succubus Figurine from my parents. I love succubi which is one of the reasons I'm getting Castlevania, and I'm thinking about starting my own succubus figurine collection.

As for Dracula X Chronicles, I think my favorite character will be Maria. I think it's cool how she fights monsters by summoning animals, and she's just a little kid. I also want to play her as an adult when I get Symphony of the Night. :D

Hello GreySun369.

We also play Castlevania, and you're right, there is no Succubus in Lords and Shadow. Games she is featured in include:

Lament of Innocence
Aria of Sorrow
Dawn of Sorrow
Symphony of the Light

The figure is pretty cool, although it's not 100% accurate to web photos. Her chest piece can't be removed to reveal her titties, but mines is still sealed so I dunno if it's like that for all versions.

Dracula X Chronicle is a fun game, hope you enjoy it! They are making PSP2 for next year.

See ya later!

The only CV game I got  for X-mas was Castlevania: Dracula X (SNES). Dispite all the hype about this version being inferior to the T-16 version, It was still a very merry christmas!

By the way...Symphony of the Light? When did THIS game come out!?!

I'm currently playing Rondo Of Blood right now. It's one of the best entries in the series so far, and the music is excellent. Punishing difficulty though, I'm not great at old school style games where you need to be precise with movement.

As for the toys, I like alot of the stuff NECA makes, but after some great T2 and Resident Evil stuff the CV range was a bit dissapointing.

Yeah I know which games she appears in. Symphony of the Night, Lament of Innocence, Aria and Dawn of Sorrow, and Portait of Ruin. Also I know the one from Dracula X Chronicles is technically a vampire, but since she
looks and behaves like a succubus I just perfer to call her that.

And yeah I'm aware that the succubus figurine isn't what she seems in the official photos. Like her paint isn't as detailed and her face points down too low. I also heard she was originally suppose to come with a removable top but they decided to glue it on. As long as the top looks like it's part of the outfit and not out of place I'm fine with that. She's still a really cool looking figure and I'm hoping to collect more succubi figurines. Have you seen this one from World of Warcraft?

And I hope I enjoy Dracula X Chronicles too! I can't believe I waited so long to play Castlevania. :P

I love DXC and I think its one of my favorite castlevania games. I don't know how many times I've played through that.

I love getting castlevania stuff for holidays. My girlfriend always gets me something for Xmas, b-days and anniversaries. I think this year she's either getting me a sealed draculas curse casue its my favorite and I want a sealed copy, or she's getting me the uk lords of shadow collectors edition. That's just what it seems like.

Any ways, I think dxc is a good start to any newcomer to castlevania. You get the classic style with rondo and metroidvania style with symphony, that way you can see a little bit of everything

Welcome to the Forums!

It's too bad The DraculaX Chronicles came out for PSP and not for, say, PS2.  Many people went and got a PSP just for that game, and still long for it to be played on a better system or on the big screen (it's one of those games I bought the TV Wire Adapter for, 'cuz it's just nicer on a big tv).

Enjoy your stay here.

Yea I bought a PSP just for that game. I was sold on it as soon as I found out that the entire SOTN was an unlockable bonus.

Damn the opening cutscene was sick...I used to fantasize about CV on PS3/XBOX because of that clip lol.

It's a very solid remake. Well, the foundation it's based off of is pretty much the most easy to get into classicvania so that'd help you. You also get SoTN as a unlockable, so you get the best of the two worlds of Castlevania. Well, arguably. DXC is pretty gorgeous too.

Yeah it looks really good. It's also kind of cool how the graphics are 3D but done in a side scroller way. The graphics just look really good, and the boss fights look fun.

Also Symphony of the Night has some really cool monsters like the Venus Weeds. And I hear it has a ton of extras and secrets.
Title: Re: May be getting Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles for X-mas.

Well it certainly has a few areas you'll spend time on if you want that 110% of the map. Most of the creatures are recycled though, if you're starting out it will be more impressive.

Sisters Mode and Pumpkin Mode are very kawaii

EDIT- oh u mean symphony
yeah it has some cool features, you unlock Richiter upon completion, & Maria has a whole new sprite complete with new techniques, difficulty, etc. There is also Axe Armor you can play ass

Nah, my parents are cool. They don't care if I have a demon in a g-string sitting around my bedroom.  :)

DXC is one of the best games the series has seen a while. By the way, when you get your psp, try to avoid the psp 2000 (slim). I got one just for this game, but the psp 2000 suffers from ghosting problems, which can sometimes make the crows and bats damn near invisible. Either way its still an awesome game.

This seems like a Freudian slip because of the grammatical error, but
Axe Armor in SoTN really does play like ass.

...
Ass Armor.

Welcome to the forums. DXC is a perfect introductory game. I'm sure you'll enjoy it very much. Be sure to stop back and tell us what you think about it after you have had a chance to play it.

Yeah the reason I decided to go with DXC is because I figured it would be a great introduction game, and it comes with three games in one. :)

Jorge I finally got a TV-Out cable and man DXC really is so much more fun to play on a actual TV.  Some PSP games tend to look like crap on a  bigger screen, but DXC looks gorgeous.  You can really see all the awesome details in the background, and the bats don't blend in with the background so you don't get cheap hits anymore. I also got a plugin called FUSA which allows me to play it in true fullscreen without the borders.  Yay for CFW! :D

To Jorge: Specifically the plugin for fullscreen TV out is called FUSA SD. Also this plugin will allow PSP 2000 owners to play tv out with games using component and COMPOSITE cables. Previously only the PSP 3000 and Go could play games on regular red, white & yellow cables.

To uzo: The project your talking about is FUSA gamepad which also is on that site.

Very good pick for a first game  ;D .

Sort of makes me realize that even if I REALLY liked LoS I don't think it's right for new fans to start with it; I think a fan can put it in the right perspective while a nonfan may end up thinking CV is something it really isn't.

^ Exactly.

In case anyone is wondering(which I'm sure they're not :P), the RE in my name stands for Resident Evil ;) That series has owned my soul since 1996. Tragic Indeed, but I know I'm not the only one around these parts that has sacrificed much for a game...afterall, you're reading this lol.

Anyways, that's the best comparison between LOS and the original titles as far as the fan base goes, that I can think of at the moment. But I don't know, I'm sure there's plenty of people here that know CV and it's fans better than me so perhaps there's a more precise example?  I'm trying to think of old franchises that were revamped with a totally different style, but RE and CV are the only ones that comes to mind at the moment.

Regardless, welcome to the forums :) I've been following this site for many, many years but just recently got the will to join. I think you'll enjoy the Dracula X Chronicles, and with all the unlockable games, it's a must have.

It's a possibly fitting comparison, but not the same thing.

In the case of RE, RE5 (I'd argue 4 too) was more than a gameplay formula shift. The older games had a very different atmosphere and much stronger storytelling. Once you accept that storytelling isn't just what you read or hear but also the way the scenery and levels help telling the story, you see that RE till 3 had incredibly strong storytelling, while RE4 and 5 had as much brain and atmosphere as a Micheal Bay movie.

LoS isn't the same; in fact, it possibly has MORE atmosphere and storytelling than past CV games. If anything, the problem here is that CV went through so many different reinterpretations, and under IGA the saga acquired a very strong anime flavour. IGA turned CV into something extremely japanese, and LoS is an extremely western game. If one doesn't know the roots of the CV saga he's bound to miss a lot of the references that tie LoS to its roots.

Yeah... though to be fair, Lords of Shadow has more Castlevania in it than RE5 does Resident Evil. (Mainly in terms of environments and later enemies.)

Yeah. I agree with this. I don't own Dracula X Chronicles for this reason. I don't have or want a PSP. Really too bad. There are surely at least 10 games on here I think would of been perfect on the Playstation 2. Like Gradius Collection!!! Lets see I have Mega Man X collection, Street Fighter Alpha Collection from Capcom... Also SNK put out collections of all their good series... Konami is not as nice at all. I see they finally put out some shitty collection with SotN, Contra (Arcade), and Frogger. Konami BLOWS.

PSP was great because it was the only platform that you can literally play ALL the classic CV games on it (even CV64, although it was very glitchy due to the emulator but I'm sure those problems have been ironed out by now).

i think FROGGER is well due for a reboot

I want to point out that I think Maria will be my favorite character to play. Seeing her shoot doves at monsters is just too damn funny! And I think it's cool that she summons animals from the Chinese Constellations. Obviously while her 4 summoned animals represent Chinese Mythology, the doves are more a Christain thing because they represent Jesus (and holy things kill vampires). It's kind of neat how Castlevania borrows so much from Christain mythology in the games, though I'm sure most real Christains would be appalled at these games.  :P

Maria mode kinda sucks on the PSP version. Her doves are pretty much worthless as they deal 1 damage to like 80% of the enemies.  She is super glitchy due to lazy programming and and she is severely underpowered on offence and defence. They didn't even bother to bring over all her subweapons from RoB.  The Egg and the Song Book are both missing for no good reason.  The only good thing is her mode is actually a descent challenge. The Maria mode in Saturn NiTM is much more fun, she has a way cooler move set and even her own intro + ending complete with exclusive entrance music.

My only problem with DXC is Richters walking animation. It doesn't look quite right compared to the original Belmont strut (which also looks "wrong" in many ways, but it's a classic walk and I wouldn't want it any other way!). Other than that, I think the package is great. Unlocking the original Rondo takes a little more effort than unlocking SotN (if I recall correctly) but I really recommend doing it ASAP so you can compare the two. I prefer the original - the soundtrack is much better and it feels more like a classic CV - but the remake is a damn fine 2D action platformer too. I think I need to play it again right away.

I love DXC! I think it's the best thing IGA did while he was involved with Castlevania. It's also perfectly suited to the PSP being a remake/port (haha!)  It's really cool how DXC is similar enough to RoB that you'd know it's a remake, but there are enough different things about it that it warrants playing both games. I prefer it when they don't just make a straight up remake without changing ANYTHING, especially for games I really dig.

I'd love to play it on a tv, but sadly I only have a PSP1000, which I'm rather partial to, but...

Not at all. it actually strengthens my faith running around killing evil for the good of mankind. there's a reason the Cross is majority of the time the strongest sub-weapon in the game. I.E (in Symphony of the night=100 hearts)

Considering it's way easier to play than the original (y'know, not having to spend a huge amount of money on a highly obscure and fragile CD system), I'd say it's worth it if you already have a PSP. But there's the issue with ghosting and the fact that it's way cooler on a big screen that just can't beat the original.

Whoops, you meant the remake, haha. I'd say it's worth it for the new stuff, yeah.

Well I'm going to play the remake then try the two unlockable games Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. The remake looks awesome, mostly because I'm a 3D kind of guy and I think it's cool to see a 3D platformer game.

So I bought it and beat it (saved all the wimenz too) it's not bad but the entire time I had this looming feeling that if they had put this on the ps3 instead it would have been 10X better. All the details in the background are lost because everything is so tiny, its a shame.
Uh I also noticed this dude with a cape standing in the background on what seems to be a bridge on the stage where you fight the Dogether, the level with the dinosaur skeleton and it's as soon as the level begins. Anyone know who this might be? it's really bugging me and he's in the original too i checked.

The Wii's Virtual Console has Rondo of Blood for.  It's exactly the same as the original.  There's no need to try and find a PC-Engine.
You can probably bargain-bin DXC by now cheap though.

Oh yeah huh. I should've remembered, I fucking bought it. BDERP  :D

In Reply To #34,

About time you return to us, Docta. You know, I never did get to play STAGE X >=/

How you been Crisis?  :)

I boot up Peke every now and again. I wish the zombies would keep on coming!

I know this is an old topic, but... I did some snooping through my X-mas presents and found a new PSP with Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles.  ;D

For Christmas that figurine is kinda satanic in nature.

Also Castlevania represents to me the fight between good and evil
hence my excuse to play it during december which is actually the truth.

p.s. I am a Christian btw.

Sadly I didn't discover a succubus when I was sneaking looks through my presents.  :'(

I myself am not a Christian, but I'm not exactly an athiest either. I'm more like a borderline agnostic. I see nothing wrong with getting a succubus figurine for X-mas. It looks cool and it's the kind of stuff I'm interested in. I'll probably just end up getting it for my birthday. :)

Merry X-mas everybody!  :D

I finally got to play my first Castlevania! It's a pretty fun game, but kind of hard because I'm not used to playing side-scrollers. I did unlock Maria and she's just as fun to play as I thought.
