I recently picked up bloodlines again because I realized I haven't played it in a few years. I went in not quite sure what to expect. I thought this game was supposed to be one of the easier classicvanias but I can barely get passed the second level...
I've beaten most of the classics save for legends and adventure and none of them proved this difficult. I think it has something to do with the speed with which John walks and some delay after he lands. He also jumps strangely too...
-
I remember it being pretty hard and the character animations often had a lot to do with it.
On a side note the animations for John & Eric are rather horrible. Especially the stair climbing ones.
-

Whoa, no. I'm pretty sure the consensus has always been that it's a tough one. The limited continues also play a big part in that (Castlevania is not Contra dammit)...
-
Yea, Bloodlines is a good game but always very challenging (in my experience with it anyway). I remember being VERY happy when I finally beat the game---similar feeling I had when I finally beat CV1 LOL.
-
CV I isn't even this hard lol heck x68000 isn't this hard. I am most confuzzed....
-
Crisis never had a problem with Bloodlines... maybe StriderKumori should just quit!!!! :p
or use savestates but only noobs do that *looks around the forum*

Take your gaze out of me!! *shrugs in shame*
Bloodlines is not hard... it's frustrating as hell! That Death battle? It took me 12 years to see what happened next, and it was because an emulator, gameshark and savestates.
I still love that game though, it has a lot of personality and it has the "journey" feeling I love about CV that the saga lacked until Ecclesia.
Kinda frustrating that non-hard ending sucked...
-
Limited continues was such a terrible idea, made the game 10 times more frustrating. Granted, Bloodlines is definitely a hard game. I always play as John Morris.
-
Bloodlines is kinda the black sheep of the classicvanias. It's been made clear here in past threads that it's a highly appreciated game, but it still never gets much discussion or praise. And I really need to play through it again; apart from the first two levels, I haven't played much of it since my first trek through about ten years ago. I have fond memories of the Piza level, and I remember frustrating moments in the last level, but other than that I don't even remember much of the game. That being said, I don't recall it being terribly difficult compared to other CVs, but the levels are pretty long. I will make it a top priority for my oldschool game replays.
-
Ha funny, I had this same problem. While I never actually beat the game, I never thought it seemed that tough when I bought it and played about 6-7 years back. Well, like someone else said. Limited Continues!!!! This is what makes basically every genesis game I have played hard. It's also the reason I've never beat any of em. I bought Sonic's Ulitmate Genesis Collection but barely touched it. I've played very little Genesis stuff. I have so many games, I never take the time to master these. I grew up a on NES and SNES as a kid. You could always continue. It seemed brutal even being able to continue on some games. I guess I'll have to step up my skills!! In this day and age of being able to continue limitless times and basically right where you die, it's hard to go back and play titles like this. Bloodlines is the only reason I actually have a Genesis. SNES always seemed WWWWAAAYYY better. Still does. Maybe I will try and beat Bloodlines via emulation (so I can use Save States) While I've beaten the NES Vanias, I generally only play em now on my PC. I just don't have the patience to try and master old games like this anymore.
-
Bloodlines is a good challenge but its not even close in difficulty to X68000, 1 or even 3. If your having trouble getting through play as Eric, because the game is much easier with him. He can attack in multiple directions and even use his pole vault to take short cuts through parts of some levels. Bloodlines is an amazing game and one of my top 3 in the WHOLE series. Every Castlevania fan owes it to themself to play through this gem at least once.
-
I think that Haunted Castle, X68000, and (maybe) Castlevania Adventure Rebirth, in Classic Mode, on Hard (or higher) is tougher.
Bloodlines is cake in comparison. Just play as Eric Lecarde and PoleVault your way through (he's invincible during this move).
It's a little tougher with John, but not even that much (he's invincible during whip-swinging).
-
Oh i forgot about Haunted Castle. Thats probably the hardest Castlevania ever made. That game is so cheap it isn't even fair. I'd say Bloodlines normal mode is more challenging then Rebirths, but i haven't really compared each game's hard mode.
-
I've done Bloodlines on all modes before (without GG codes). It was tough but I eventually succeeded. But yeah, as hard as Bloodlines was, it's still a cake walk compared to Haunted Castle. But what I thought was interesting about Bloodlines was that dependinf on the difficulty you are playing at, there would be extra extentions in the stages, more half-bosses to fight and even the golom boss in the Atlantis shrine gets taller. Death's little cardgame changes too. In easy mode there are two things of meat. Normal mode only has one and in hard mode, there is none at all. It was a dissapointment that it wasn't made on the SNES, otherwise we could've gotten another SCV4-ish game out of it. And perhaps a more story-involved ending for the heros.

Yeah. That was the Demon Castle's quarter munching monster form. I'm actually playing that thing right now in order to map out the stages for my ultimate CV1 8-bit remake. It would take some serious time & training to beat this thing without save states between stages. =P

my ultimate CV1 8-bit remake
Who what? ROM hack of CV1 with Haunted Castle levels adapted? Details.
-
I had the PAL version, titled "New Generation". I always played the game only with the spear guy, not the one that has the whip, and I remember how frustrating it was, especially the second "try the hard mode" playthrough to see the real ending. It was hell compared to CIV for SNES, and I think the controls played a large part in this. One of the reasons CIV is so good is that you feel you are in control of the main character and the whip he uses as a weapon - in Bloodlines, the controls of the guy that holds the whip feel like an 8-bit game.
Good game though, and the Genesis/Mega Drive did a good job with the music. In fact, the version of Simon's theme heard here is my favorite.
-
I remember that the final level in this game and the battle with Dracula was a total bitch. I actually haven't beaten the game with John yet, I should probably try it. Eric's Extra jump was nice in that it let you by pass some annoying areas. I don't think the game is anywhere near as difficult as Chronicles, mainly because of the better controls and Chronicle's clock tower level is evil.
Also, after finishing Castlevania 1, did you guys find it to be significantly easier on subsequent playthroughs? I actually do think Bloodlines is harder than it.
-
in my opinion bloodlines wasnt that hard... really... i mean i consider myself a castlevania expert and all but the game could difficult for you if you started the series playing the gba/ds titles or symphony of the night.
In my opinion the hardest game was castlevania dracula x for the snes. the final battle with dracula on the pillars.
but in any castlevania its patterns. once you get them everything is a cakewalk

True indeed. I made it to level 3, I guess I just haven't played Bloodlines as much as the others. In fact I only made it to death the last and only time I played.
I plan on tackling XX once I'm done with BL.
-
I feel like I'm cheating on my lovely wife 'Rondo of Blood' with a nasty skank girl when playing XX. I should probably play through it though sometime too. I just kind of put it out of my head once I got a hold on Rondo and never looked back. Maybe I should try not to look at it as a really bad port, but as a different game entirely.

Thats a good idea, because it pretty much is. Either way XX just isn't very much fun.

The little i have played of XX, it's like "hay thats from rondo....kinda" or "look at those awesome rondo flame effects....sorta"
-
First stage of XX is not so bad, but after that the game turns into a kinda generic SNES action platformer that lacks all the stuff that made Super Castlevania 4 (and Rondo, of course) such a timeless classic. But yeah, first stage is actually rather good IMO.
-

Wait, what? That whole game and final battle are easy as pie. Just use the ax to fight Dracula.
I love Dracula X for SNES, by the way. Not near as cool as Rondo, but still neato. I love the graphics. Reminds me of a more cartoony/colorful, less dark Demon's Crest.
Bloodlines I don't find difficult either, although the limited continues is kind of a pain.
As far as classic Castlevania games go (not including Haunted Castle, since arcade games are always tough to mine you of quarters), the X68000 game is probably the most difficult, in my mind. Well, not overall (it's pretty easy), but some of the later stages are a bitch. More specifically, I have the hardest damn time with the clock tower and its boss. But I'm sure there's someone reading this who can breeze through that stage.
-
There is. Wait till after shes thrown everything to attack (unless you have the boomerang, throw it at every chance) she will then pick up the clock hand and stop moving which is your chance.
Difficulty doesn't really exist in cv once you mesmerize all the patterns.
-
The biggest trouble is the level itself. A lot of times when I get to the boss, I'm almost out of time and can't wait for everything to be thrown before I start attacking. Can't tell you how many times I've fallen down in that stage, ha.

O most definitely true. The cogs and the peeping eyes are the worst. The level right after the clock tower is 10X harder for me though due to Frankenstein....

The DXX flame effects were amazing, and superior to any effect in Rondo. But uh, beyond that. Uh. The whole stage looked better than Rondo's, but Rondo's had a far better layout. Actually, the level design in DXX really hinders it.
-
I'll admit XX has some suuuuuper lazy level designs. But...the graphics! They look so good! (So I can forgive how lousy some of the stage designs are.)
-
Why hasn't anyone tried to make a DXX romhack? So much potential...
-
Thaddeus changed it so that you'd play as Trevor in that game, but beyond that, not much was done, that I know of.
Wouldn't it be cool, though, to make a fake-Rondo hybrid using DXX graphics? That'd be pretty neat-o.
-
Didn't Thaddeus also do one that fetured the anti-hero from the canceled 32-X castlevania game? I still have that hack including the trevor hack too. I would love to see Rondo of blood get remaid with the SNES DX sprites. The burning village was nicly done with the mode-7 fire blazing away in the background. A lot less 2D then as it was in Rondo. The clock tower was also another beautiful design (once you got to the gear rooms of course).

I dunno. It'd be cooler to hack DXX into a completely new game with better level design, maybe changed AI, etc.
-
I finally beat the red bat thing....this game is annoying more than anything else because I just noticed John reacts a quarter of a second after I press the button. *Facepalm
-
I was confused as to what type of creature it was that you were fighting in the leaning tower stage. I found out later that it's the front view of a Gargoyle.

Bloodlines is really a tough game to beat. I've never finished it until now. The controls can be very frustrating most of the time. Wish they'll make a newer versions of such Castlevania classic though.
