Title: To Platform or Not To Platform, That is the Question
Post by: darkwzrd4 on November 20, 2010, 07:57:33 PM
Do you like 3D CV games that require a lot of platforming or not?  I mean look at LoS.  The entire game is platforming.  I don't know about all of you, but the stages shouldn't be all platforming and the bosses shouldn't.  I mean some platforming is good but the amount in LoS is just way too much.

LoS isn't the type of platforming I would like to see in later games, at least not the majority of it (the shimmying) other parts like the machine tower and music box were 10/10 as far as platforming goes.

Ok, that I agree with, but when it comes to bosses like the dracolich in which the entire battle is platforming, forget it.  I do not like battles that are entirely based on platforming.  Boss battle should be based on strategy and battle skills, not platforming.

My thoughts exactly. I liked the jumping parts not so much the climbing around on ledges parts.

I agree. Not that shimming was bad, but jumping was better, but we are forgetting something: LoS has fixed camera, and jumos with fixed camera are tricky, that's why platfforming is more focused on climbing I think, a design choice to make the game less frustrating.
HOwever, if MS somehow manage to edit the engine to make it camera-controlable AND as beautiful as before, gimme more jumping, please.

I liked the parts that were horizontal like in the area just before Pan with the jumping.  And some parts of the Fairies towers.

Most of the "platforming" consisted of climbing and scaling walls, while not traditional it's still a form of it. I loved it when the game had those 2D scrolling/camera moments, I could definitely go for more of those. I even loved those short moments where you would just swing back and forth by your whip over a chasm, I am sooooo happy they brought that back. I hope they continue to expand on the use of the whip as a weapon/tool.

I want to see more stuff like crumbling staircases and being rushed to platform up a spire or something while spikes/acid/whatever is constantly rising, just a coupe ideas. Just more platforming designs that feels like an accomplishment. To me that's the best kind of platforming.

ofcourse it should! ;D
that was one of the major flaws to the 3d titles such as CVCOD and CVLOI in the first place lol

Fuck slow wall shimmying. It's boring and far too on-rails.

Actual jumping from platform to platform 4 lyfe.

Yes, swinging with the whip and using it as a tool is awesome, but the question is should there be boss fight that are entirely platforming?  I have no problem with some platforming in a stage so long as it is within reason and goes with the what the area is, but I don't like having to climb all over an undead dragon as a boss fight.

As if that wasn't bad enough, you finish him by platforming. I thought to myself "alright now I get to really fight the dragon! Wait....why is his glo... damit...." As much as I love LoS I keep thinking (I must remember it's a reboot) if they had kept it closer to home everyone would have been happy.

I have to agree, I didn't like the titan battles at all. Bosses of that immense size are not necessary.

I liked the titan bosses, they should be kept... kinda. Just don't make them a climb-a-ton, make giant monsters but not stone moving buildings, GOW's Chornos is a good place to begin with inspiration. (IMagine a giant Beezelbub-the forgotten one and tell me it's not awesome)

For me its maybe. I don't mind the occasional plateforming but not through the whole game. And I definitly don't want any more boss plateforming. CV64/LoD had the right amount of plateforming with conventional ground traversing. It worked well and there were no bosses that used plateforming.

I have to agree CV64 had the right amount of platforming.

Yeah, I'd rather just hit them a lot. I don't want to climb all over a giant thing just to hurt it. More Bayonetta, less SotC plz.

Yeah I second that.

I enjoyed the shimmying, and using the whip to rappel down cliffs.  Slow certainly, but there was a sense of euphoria doing that in some of those beautiful environments.  A Belmont overcoming the landscape in new ways.  At Dorin's monastery, going up the tower and smashing through the window—that was a magnificent experience.  We may never see its' likes again.

There was probably too much of it though.  I would have liked more platforming, but it was awkward at times, perhaps due to the framerate and input detection/response.  On the Music Box level sometimes Gabriel seemed to jump far enough to the next platform, sometimes he seemed to just do a small jump.  It was hit and miss.  On the 2D scrolling/camera moments, I had a problem with the dash function kicking in when trying to edge up to the electric fields.  It needs to be sharpened up a bit.

The Necromancer's Abyss level was excellent though I thought, combining a bit of everything.  Shame it was the last level.

I wouldn't really qualify shimmying and rappelling as platforming.

Yeah, me neither. Platforming, to me, is to jumping from "platform" to "platform".

Seriously. Mario Galaxy was closer to Castlevania in its platforming than this game was.

Mario Galaxy kicks ass! I played through both of them recently, and I think Galaxy 2 was more fun. And I'm pretty crappy at 3D platformers(the whole vertigo thing), but it was pretty enjoyable. I almost got into my "little kid" mentality, where I'd be jumping in my seat everytimg I had to jump to a far platform. I haven't done that since the NES days!

Side scrolling sections; now complete with Medusa Heads, staircases, and moon walking.

Well, for me, it includes some climbing, but not on bosses.  Though I am partial to throwing stuff at them.

Some climbing, perhaps, but shimmying, no. Even if you shimmy on a ledge, you shimming in a straight line, not platform to platform. It's a straight path, even if you hug the wall.
