I've been playing a lot of Symphony of the Night on my PSP now that I beat The Dracula X Chronicles, and I'm very amazed at the amount of originality when it comes to the various enemies in the game. Not only do they look really cool, but many have interesting backstories and connections to mythology I have never even heard of untill I looked them up on the internet.
The only thing that dissapoints me is that even though they re-did the script and voice acting, and added Maria as an unlockable playable character, they still didn't give the enemies their original names from the Japanese version of the game. Some of the new names I can live with, like the Salem Witch and Skelerang, but anyone who's even slightly familar with H.P. Lovecraft can tell that the Cthulu and Devil had their names switched.
But other then that, I have to say SotN has the best monsters of any video games because they're the most creative and original. :)

Not to mention original bosses.

That's 3 thumbs up for Beezlebub, whose name "Lord of the flies" has been literally interpreted in Castlevania!
Beezlebub was originally a derogatory name the Hebrews gave to the Mesopotamian god Baal (master), hinting at the fact that he's a false god.

Could somebody tell me WTF is THAT? :o

You have to be high on crack to figure that one out :)

Actually that female monster with the snakes and wolf head legs is Scylla, a sea monster in Greek Mythology. And yeah I agree that they have some really creative bosses too! :)
My favorite is the Succubus, I think this was the first game she was really introduced into, but I'm not sure.

I think we're all aware of your raging e-boner for Succubus by now, GreySun369 :P

it's funny that not even the creators know what this is

i thought it was very weird & unique how this creature just "disappears" when you kill it
lets not forget "schmoo"

First time I saw the Fire Demon limbering towards me I got a lil freaked out

Actually I got bored with her, now I'm more obsessed with Carmilla. Mmmhmm nothing is hotter then a naked vampire chick on a floating skull like a santanic version of a bubbledance. :D
Edit: All kidding aside, I guess I do obsess on the succubus a lot and I apologize. There are other monsters I like in Symphony of the Night. I especially think it's cool that many of them are named after demons and monsters in greek mythology.

Actually, Scylla's physical makeup is inspired by Sin from Paradise Lost. She is described as having wolves and serpents on the bottom half of her body after being raped by Death. No joke.
Death and Sin are actually Satan's offspring in that poem. Scylla is mentioned elsewhere too (I think as a body of water in Hell or something), which might be why their names were conflated.
-
Oh I didn't know that... well the way Scylla was described in Greek Mythology was very similar to that appearance. So that might be another reason for the confusion. Here's a wikipedia page about Scylla.

Huh... so I guess it's more Milton's own spin on the idea. Interesting.
-
Oh, most definitely. The bestiary was incredibly impressive and diverse.
-
Oh I agree that SotN has the most creative monsters. I mean look at the frozen halfs. There transvestites!!! You don't see that in any of the other games.

Ha Ha! Ah good ol' poison. Iwould also agree with SotN's collection of bosses and minor enemies. But through all of the IGA games that have come afterwards, some of these baddies are wearing very thin... and not in a good way. :P

Galamoth was also pretty interesting, even though he's actually a myth reference IIRC, he sure looked pretty cool in SoTN.
-
One thing I really liked in SotN was the Wizard of Oz style villians, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion. I always liked to assume maybe the Schmoo had something to do with flying monkeys or something Oz related, just cause they're in the same location, but I thought that was an interesting idea and I'd like to see that come back again, but with more.

yeah, read the enemy description in the PSP version of SotN found as an extra in DXC.

Here's what the Schmoo really is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shmoo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shmoo)
However, I'm pretty sure it wasn't called that in the original J release.
...
Here! Kyuu (Q?): http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Schmoo (http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Schmoo)

SotN had so awesome monsters that every CV game since has at least 20 SotN enemies. :D
-
SoTN might have had most original, but LoI still has the goriest boss. Dunno if that should be considered an achievement though...

I'd consider it an achievement.
LOI boss battle with The Forgotten One was definitely one of the most interesting and gory battles in CV history in my opinion.
I'd love to see The Forgotten One and Beezelbub return in the next castelvania installement with upgraded graphics and battle techniques.

No thanks. At least not as a main boss. I hate that kind of gore.

What I love about the symphony is the amount of enemies, forgetting pallet swaps, the game had a lot of monsters, and, diferent to other IGa games, they made sense in their own location (And there were no electric robots nor indian gods). I would love a new CV game with the variety of SOTN.

I'm cool with the Indian gods, but you're right in that enemies never make sense in their locations in IGA's games. Wonder why that is.
-
Wonder how would you move any enemies in OoE for example to make them make sense?
Fans always claim they know any stuff better than developers, that makes me laugh.
For the topic, kinda disagree. Symphony has just the biggest quantity of different monsters. Monsters from Rondo started its art-style are not worse at all.
-
Given that SOTN pretty much started the whole trend of reusing sprites from old games I can't say that I agree, there is nothing creative about taking an already established enemy & changing them around a bit. I suppose it's fully original monsters were occassionally interesting but I felt the often praised Beezlebub was about as entertaining as the possessed wall in Haunted Castle & Frankenstein's monster was just plain goofy looking.
-
It was at least understandable in SoTN's case, with it being a sequel of Rondo. Plus, CVI, II, and III all shared sprites anyway. And SoTN was mostly original so it was no big deal~
While I liked boss appearances in SoTN, they were all designed very poorly.
-
While SotN has many good monsters design, it is full of Skeleton-type enemies, like the Skelerang, Bone Ark, Slinger, Bone Archer, Bone Musket, Yorick, Blade Master, etc.
-
Don't see anything bad in this by the way. Why don't people like skeleton-type monsters?..
-

Rondo isn't the only game that Sotn borrowed a few sprites from, it also used ones from Super Castlevania IV & possibly Castlevania X6800 aswell but to a much lesser extent. You are correct though in saying that previous Castlevania games have occasionally shared sprites too but it is far more prevalent in Sotn I believe.
-
Oh, I forgot about those. I can't even recognize the X6800 ones because they actually got edited to fit in SoTN's style more iirc.
Also Blade Master is the best skeleton. Or maybe after HoD's Simon Wraith, dressed in their Simon Belmont garbs.

I am playing Dawn of Sorrow and DAMN this game sucks so badly! :-X
Wait, wait, let me explain.
90% of the monsters are recycled. The original ones are really ugly. Especially that pig monster that looks like primeape. :P
Why does this game suck? Well, it simply does. There you had a very original game, Aria of Sorrow, and based on its success, they made a sequel which was basically Aria recycled. Sure, they added some cool touchscreen elements like the seal system and the breakable blocks, but that's it. The rest of the gameplay is identical. The storyline is horribly boring and predictable.
I'm not saying that the game isn't fun; Nah, I enjoy playing it. But from any other aspect... Yeah.

Plus, it doesn't contribute to the overall storyline. It's one of those games in which if you removed it from the timeline, it wouldn't affect anything.
