Title: vanhelsing move to much like lords of shadow
Post by: gandalfi on February 05, 2011, 01:53:49 PM
well im new here but i recently watch the vanhelsing movie and noticed way to many simularities for starters both main charecters are named gabrial and work for some sort of secret order... hmm. both seem to cant remember much about there past... hmm. they both take place in translyvania tho thats just cause they both originate there. and also gabrial belmont looks alot like hugh jackman if you ask me... hmm. just saying it does seem real simular.

some say the castles look similar too, with the interconnecting towers I suppose

Except Van Helsing has more of the monsters expected of a Castlevania. ZING

Another day, another Lords of Shadow looks more like "this" that it does "Castlevania" discussion, surely we haven't seen this brought up to death a million times. /sarcasm

I'll go ahead and ask this anyway, why does Van Helsing get so much hate anyway? I thought it was a ok movie, cheesy as hell but it was at least watchable. Hell I'll be the one to say it's the closest to a Castlevania movie that we'll get untill the actual movie gets made.

I thought it was an ok movie as well although I hated how Dracula was portrayed, relied way too much on CGI, etc.

I enjoyed it too. Nothing amazing, but it's still a fun movie.

Plus Kate Beckinsale....... :-* ;)

I think it was alright too! It's not the OMG MOVIE OF TEH MILLENIUM, but it's solid enough. I doubt an official Castlevania movie would do it better.

Yeah, Van Helsing is as close to a decent CV movie as we will probably ever get.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I love the score. And I thought is was awesome how they reference Castlevania and the Belmont clan in the video game.

I too, noticed how much LoS was to the Van Helsing movie since both had stone castles in the frozen wastes.

I think it would be fairly safe to assume that Van Helsing inspired aspects of LoS in the same way that classic CV inspired Van Helsing.

I said on DAY ONE that the castle in LoS was exactly like Dracula's castle in VH. The layouts were similar and even had the main towers connected by huge support chains. Same thing. Ironically, Castle Frankenstein in VH was much more like the "traditional" castle in CV1.

yeah the movie was good tho with all the creativity konami has done with all the previous castlevania games its strange that they couldnt come up with there own charecter the two Gabrial's are just to much alike. :'(

This ^^^

The movie was fine and definitely reminded me of Castlevania which is a GOOD thing.

But the portrayel of Dracula could have been MUCH better.

I guess that's another thing Lords of Shadow has in common with Van Helsing. Shitty portrayal of Dracula

I sort of agree with the Dracula thing in Van Helsing. He went out like a punk. It should have been a lot harder for Gabriel.
Not to mention it would have made the final battle more epic.
Although, in general the entire notion of Dracula being immortal except if he's killed by a werewolf seems very counter-intuitive.

Couldn't agree more lol.

Keep telling people over and over, that Soloman Kain is also similar to VH and Castlevania. Actually the movie of SK is much better IMO and I would love it if the Castelvania movie was done in a similar gritty fashion but with the whole castlevania setting.

OK that looks pretty damn good. Definitely something worth seeing if the trailer is any indication.
Is this based on a comic book? I noticed it's from the dude that wrote Conan.

Never heard of the movie.

But the trailer did look pretty nice so i'd definitely have to check it out sometime.

That movie looks a lot like LoS.  From what I saw in the trailer, the hero seems to decend deeper into darkness fighting demons sort of like Gabriel Belmont.

I think the Gabriel in Van Helsing inspired the Gabriel in LoS and both may inspire the hero in Soloman Kain.
This is just my opinion.

That whole only a werewolf can kill a vampire thing rings of underworld and possibly twilight in that both of which put forward the notion that vampires and werewolves are arch-rivals (something I don't like).

So this movie is already out, but only has a region B blu ray on Amazon. It seems there never was a NA release for it. Netflix doesn't have it up either. I must seek a way to view this movie!

I haven't seen Van Helsing in forever. Maybe I should sit down and watch that one of these weekends....especially with LoS still fresh in my mind. See if I can dig up any more comparisons.

An out of region DVD should work in any PC system's DVD drive, right?

Not sure. If so, then that's a possibilty. I see there are programs I can download to make it work so that's probably the rout I'll take.  Amazon has the BD listed as 'Region B' but the DVD says 'All Regions'. Do they make DVD's that play in all regions? All this region-coding nonsense seems kinda silly, if you ask me.

It's all about copy rights in different countries. Lame for the consumer, who wants to watch foreign entertainment, but companies obviously prioritize protection of their property. Oddly enough for PS3 games, this is a moot point. Not sure about the legality involved, but does this mean every title ever on the PS3 is forced to be licensed in every region? Sounds expensive. Then again, PS3 development in general is ridiculously expensive.

That's why I'm not playing LOS, lol. I guess the most obvious thing that sets them (VH & LOS) apart is the signature whip that appears in all castlevania games.

I think the Gabriel in Van Helsing inspired the Gabriel in LoS and both may inspire the hero in Soloman Kain.

Definitely not since Solomon Kane was created in 1928.
More like Solomon Kane is the gran daddy of both Gabriels.

There was a Gabriel in Van Helsing? Clearly I haven't seen the movie in a while.

Van Helsing was from the original Bram Stoker's Dracula written in 1897, but that was Abraham Van Helsing. Not sure how 'Gabriel' came about.

They used the name "Gabriel" because, in the movie, he was the Archangel Gabriel.

Really, I thought he was human.

The reveal in the movie that, from my recollection(I haven't seen it in a while) that Gabriel was the Archangel, who seemingly cast down(I beleive) and got amnesia. So, he basically didn't know who he was.

Cronqvist cast out Gabriel who becomes eventually vampire, whereas Gabriel cast out by Yahweh becomes a werewolf  :o

I guess LoS's twist wasn't as bad as Van Helsing's!

Wow... this is Van Helsing still? I don't remember ANY of that. I do remember the dopey werewolf vs Dracula CGI battle though.
