This game is full of Old School epicness. Beautiful hand draw grafics and awesome soundtrack, tipical of Arc System (Guilty Gear / Blaz Blue). It's just me or Bahamut looks like Sol?

Slightly.   His red armored blonde rival reminds some people of Ky. ;D  Not a coincedence coming from Arc Systems Works character designs.  It's a good thing Krystal looks nothing like Millia Rage despite the long blonde hair.   ;D

I knew it! It IS a prequel to Contra Hard Corps. Otherwise they wouldn't have been able to put good ol' (future Colonel) Bahamut in there. It's a shame that the PSN won't get this title till next month though.

PSN release a month later? D: Bogus. I hate the 360's D-pad. Sucks way bad for 2D games.

I'll buy the PSN release when it's out, unless I read reports and evidence of the 360 version being better in some way.

Same here. I bought Bionic Commando Rearmed and Mega Man 9 for the same reason.

Gameplay looked a little slower than I expected, but it's still Contra, so I'll be picking it up. If it's even half as good as Contra 4, I'll be happy.

This is why I'll be rocking the Zangief fight pad. Makes 2D games soooo much better.

I'm totally starting out with tube-hair guy.

Some are guessing that Harley and Sayuri are unlockables (based on the fact the intro has all 4 characters in the video), others speculate they will be DLC.  Well this wouldn't be the first time there are unlockable characters.  Neo Contra had 1 and so did Contra 4.

Post by: X on February 15, 2011, 12:42:46 AM
Contra 4 had a large roster of unlockables! It's a shame that the rest of the Contra: Hard Corps team didn't get there shot in the game, but at least they snuck in Sheena (she's my fave). Hardcore:Uprising doesn't appear to have any DLC that I've read but it states that by earning points in the game, those points will be used as currency for unlocking characters and a bunch of other goodies! I can't wait to play this game.

The expression "...in name only..." comes to mind while watching the (FANTASTICALLY BADASS) intro and sloppy playthrough.  Kinda like that ninja mummy in CastleVania Judgment called "Grant", except fun.

As Nanostray 2 demonstrated what a Gradius should've been on the Nintendo DS, Hard Corps: Uprising shows what all post-Hard Corps/pre-4 Contras should've been.

With the exception of the voice work.  It'd be nice if they'd redo ALL of it before sending the game to market.  ALL of it.

I'm definitely getting this, but I have to say it doesn't look like it's on par with my favourite Contra games. Level design actually looks a bit uninspired. And the enemies making noises when they die is already annoying. And - blimey! - you have a life bar? Very well... I hope the game provides a good challenge anyway.

Also, I miss the constant miniboss gameplay present in Contra Hard Corps and Shattered Soldier. Here it seems more run'n'gun and less encounters with spectacular monstrosities. Even good old Contra III was jampacked with memorable miniboss moments, rivaling that of any modern action game. This looks like it's straightforward level after straightforward level. Maybe I'm wrong though. At least the chase in the end of that video was 100% Contra.

Anyway, in the end I'm sure I'll like this game for what it is :)

And - blimey! - you have a life bar?

Believe it or not, the Japanese version of Contra Hard Corps had the exact same type of life bar system. But it was removed in the US version.

Post by: affinity on February 16, 2011, 02:09:14 AM
I think the life bar is only for Uprising mode, in Arcade mode, I think if you get hit once, a life is subtracted (either that or you have less health bars.   Arcade mode has no upgrade system like Uprising mode, it's good Arcade mode tries to preserve the difficulty and challenge of the classics, while Uprising is for those that want an easier time.)
Title: Re: Hard Corps UPRISING delivers a new legend within the Contra universe!!!
Post by: Abnormal Freak on February 16, 2011, 09:27:52 AM
I actually really hate that the three-hit life bar in the original Hard Corps was taken out for the US and I think European versions. I first played the game by emulating the Japanese version, so when I finally picked up the US cartridge, I was soooo pissed it no longer had the life bar. Made the game needlessly more difficult than it should be.

Good reports say that it is one of the hardest games in the last few years and very Contra like (yay!)

Your thought Contra Hard Corps was too difficult?  It's great it's so tough, that in a way ups the replay value even more and makes victory more rewarding!    ;D  And you can find video walkthroughs for tips and tricks if you don't want to figure it out on your own.  Even hardcore games like Contra:HC are entirely winnable, pattern memorization is one of the keys to survive.

The demo was pretty fun. I'll buy it when I have some extra cash. However there is some complete bullshit going on. The two characters you guys were talking out earlier you have to buy separate for $5.00, I believe it was 400 MS points. So a download game winds up being 20 bucks instead of 15. I will likely wait till it's 1/2 off if they want to play this way. This download content stuff is getting out of hand!

Yeah, Konami seemed to do the same crap with Harmony of Despair, so it doesn't surprise me here, either. They really need to learn how to start pricing this stuff.

...well, okay, unless everyone still buys the stuff regardless. Then they're geniuses.  ;)

Yeah. Getting up-close and personal with the enemy. To give her a slight advantage, it looks as though her sword was coded to be a little stronger then the guns. It would definitely be interesting to play through.

They're still cheapasses for making us pay for two more characters, but damn this game is good. My main complaint is the normal walk is far too slow, but it's pretty awesome.

Also, watching my brother beat this, one of the later stages has a very blatant Castlevania easter egg. It is HIGHLIGHT FOR SPOILERS the infamous Staircase! Before one of the last boss fights, you walk up a very long red-carpeted staircase, complete with huge-ass full moon in the background. This game rocks so much. Spoilers end here.
Title: Re: Hard Corps UPRISING delivers a new legend within the Contra universe!!!
Post by: OmegaDL50 on February 21, 2011, 08:37:05 PM
Sayuri actually despite needing close to use her sword is rather quite ridiculously overpowered.

Being able to kill bosses in seconds...also her charge wave attack penetrates walls and kills most normal enemies in a single attack.

I think it may actually be possible to beat the Arcade mode with Sayuri if one was just to simply memorize the enemy spawning patterns and just breeze through the stage.
Title: Re: Hard Corps UPRISING delivers a new legend within the Contra universe!!!
Post by: X on February 22, 2011, 12:40:42 AM
That's pretty much how it goes. Contra has always been hard series when you first start playing. But after a time you begin to see the pattern in the enemy attacks and movements. Once you have this nailed down, finishing the game is a breeze.

Yes even Megaman games, Devil May Cry games, Ninja Gaiden games, etc.  Once you understand the patterns and timing and optimal ways to win, it can be somewhat a simple routine.  But it's no fun always using the same method to win everytime, it's fun to experiment with longer and harder methods too.   And it's easy to finish something, but completing it without getting hit once everytime isn't always easy depending on the game/situation until maybe when it's fully mastered (and not many get that far.)   ;D

After watching my bro play through this (haven't had time to play much this week), DAMN there are a lot of little bits of Konami fan service. Stage 4 has the Gradius-inspired boss (and Harley even says "Aw man, I'm terrible at shooting games!), the rocket-snowboard which I'm almost certain is a nod to Turtles in Time, the aforementioned staircase with moon in background... These guys had to have a lot of love for old games.

The rocket snowboard scene was from Contra: Shattered soldier. It was in stage 1: The Enemy Base.

I wish you had an option to switch between characters after game overs because they do have differences between one another. And on that note, what other Contra games allow you to do that? I know Hard Corps does, but what about ReBirth? The older games didn't because all that changed was sprite color.

Contra Forces' real title is Arc Hound in Japan. It's something Konami did at the last minute. It's no longer a part of the Contra cannon but it's not like that story interferes with what happens in the future. Contra Forces takes place in around 1990, '91' or '92' while the original Contra happens in the year 2633.

Righto, but what about the questionable PS1 games?

Also, on an unrelated note, does the stage select cheat work in non-Japanese copies of Hard Corps? I don't think I've ever seen the full game.

As far as I know PS1 Contras are not part of the canon either.
Though some things could have changed in that regard with the release of the new games.

Is this game before or after the advent of Black Viper's Red Falcon invasion? (the aliens from the early series games)

Let's Play Hard Corps Uprising 01 - Back in the Fold (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH5Z--aw-Cw#)

The link is the first part of a play-through that is a 'blind' play-through.

I just picked it up off of youtube and don't know the player.

Post by: X on February 26, 2011, 05:25:53 AM
It might be slightly after the alien wars or during. I'll have to see the game story myself to know where it fits. In the Contra hard corps story, Bahamut was a hero during the alien wars. But only three years after the first wave and only a year after the second wave (Contra 4), he tried to overthrow the Federation government (The Triumvirate). According to the shattered soldier story, The federation was the soul reason for the aliens (Moirai guardians) continuous invasions. If Bahamut discovered the link between the two then we can see why he tried to deliver the Coup d'état. He would know of the federation's corruption and tried to put a stop to it even if he was a little misguided.

I've been toying for some years now with the idea of making a Contra fan-game.

Only this ones different. Very different. Instead of being the Contra elite troops you normally play as, you are an elite alien trooper trying to get to a goal and are under attack by various humans, robots, helicopters, tanks, spike-grilled trucks, shock troops (and by shock I mean big cyborgs with an electron-weapon  ;D).

I have a scenario and levels and power ups and everything around here somewhere already written up, unfortunately I know nothing about game programming and know nothing about sprite ripping.
Title: Re: Hard Corps UPRISING delivers a new legend within the Contra universe!!!
Post by: X on February 26, 2011, 08:29:20 AM
Sprite ripping is the easy part. Just play a game on an emulator. Then take a screen capture if the emulator supports it and if not, then download a screen capture program off the net. Zophar's Domain has such utilities available. Once you have the desired pic, simply use and art program (Corel photo paint or Adobe Photo shop) and simply cut out the sprite from the image. There will be times when the sprite you want to capture is mixed in with special effects making it difficult to segregate the sprite itself. I've been ripping and spriting for a few years now so I'm used to the labor it involves. But it's still fun to do. For me the hard part is learning how to code a program which will give your sprites life. I know next to zilch about programming so I can sympathize with you there.  :'(

Uprising is set 20 years before the first Contra, so it's set in 2316. Why he turns to the side using aliens for evil during Hard Corps is left unexplained. The same applies to Dr. Geo Mandrake, who's also in the game. Bahamut started the rebellion due to what was going on, and Geo Mandrake didn't know the extents of what his research was being used for until an outbreak started at the facility he was residing in.

I suppose they wanted to use the aliens to fight the government for some evil deed they were doing? Mind you, I've only played games in the main timeline up until Hard Corps, so I have no clue what goes on with Shattered Soldier or Neo Contra.

I love the classic Contras. I never played anything past Contra 3 and Contra: Hard Corps though (not including Contra Rebirth), so I don't know if the newer games were any good.

I want to get this now, cause it looks like fun. Technically I could since I have a PS3 and a 360, but the PS3 has such better controllers. I guess I must wait.   :(

Shattered Soldier, Neo Contra are some of the best Contra games ever (and the best presentation in the series)
CONTRA: SHATTERED SOLDIER (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Viki52UJFjE#)

Neo contra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grBA4clVjDw#)

Neo Contra stages are all overhead style (similiar to the overhead stages that Super Contra introduced,, but more advanced) but it's really good too.   Personally I find both of them more enjoyable than Contra 3 (Contra Hard Corps being the best of them all.)

I haven't played Contra 4 or Rebirth but they are said to be really great too.

March is really close, so Uprising is sure to appear on PSN within the next few weeks.  ;D

Look up a You Tube video for the Contra Shattered Soldier story. Lance Bean explains it all to Bill and Lucia. Neo Contra takes place hundreds of years after shattered soldier. In that light it's almost a stand-alone game as the story has almost nothing to do with the games that had come before it.

I've decided I'm serious about the Contra fan-game I mentioned earlier in the topic.

I watched the play-thru of this Contra all the way through. There are several areas of high difficulty and the final boss WILL require expert hand-eye co-ordination. What those areas and boss are, I won't say, its spoilerish.

Great news!  People are saying that PSN gets this March 15 (next week!!!! Finally!!!)  Also I heard 360 recently got Leviathan as DLC (that increases the amount of characters to 5.  Leviathan is said to be a more challenging character to use.  He is said to only take 1 hit even in Rising mode and has 1 weapon slot (classic Contra style).   And something about grenades and other upgrades.   He is also said to be the fastest character.  Some players may find his style to their liking.   I don't think Leviathan will be available day 1 for PSN version release, but it's likely Harley and Sayuri will be there for those interested.  ;D

It's an interesting concept to be able to upgrade your characters weapons, lives, life, etc. And to think I've almost mastered the first stage only after a couple of hours worth of gameplay (that's of course because I was ranking up my score in order to buy more stuff  ;D)
