Title: You youngsters and your nintenboxes 530's
Post by: K.G. Morder on February 13, 2011, 01:07:07 AM
Anyone ever play Dungeons and Dragons? And I dont mean the online game, i mean the legit tabletop RPG. With the books, the character sheets, mini figures, d20 set, and crappily drawn custom maps.

(putting it here because this is a rather hardcore game IMO, and it isn't quite off topic enough from a game to g in the off topic area)

I have played the game since I was first introduced to it back in junior high almost 15 years ago! I even made a Belmont character. Ah...memories.  :) I've played other tabletop RPGs too. Rifts: Phase world, D&D Modern, Project A-ko (Made a Blues Brother character for that one), Five rings and some others I can't remember right now. Good topic to bring up, as these RPG games is what helped me survive the horrors of that broken down institution we know as school.

I played that D&D miniature series that Wizards made with my friends a while back. I still have the starter pack and we really did want to play it again...but I lost the beginners book so its hard to explain and remember a lot of the rules.

Friends and I play usually once a week, and are playing in the Eberron campaign setting. (which is awesome) Although since Around Halloween '10 We took a trip over to Ravenloft, DnD's resident horror fantasy setting, and originator of Castlevania 2's castle and vampire on the cover.

Sspeaking of which, theres a somewhat amusing story with Ravenloft...

So our party consists of a Rouge Half-Elf named Maeless, a Changeling Fighter named Bel, and a Warforged Artificer (myself) named Rustung. (We just call him "Rusty" though). So we were wandering around the tall grass in the forest when we encountered a wild pokemon werewolf elf who after acting really suspicious, started attacking us.

Unfortunately for him, we were on a roll, and beat him into submission. Upon which myself and Bel then proceeded to chain him up and interrogate him as to whether he worked for our vampire target.  So we asked him, to which he responded

"I answer only to the forest!"

So we punched him.

We asked again, and again, same answer. Now, we figured he was being a smart ass, since well, he was one before the battle. So Bel promptly broke a large tree branch and proceeded to beat him with the forest unill he was knocked unconscious.

Our DM couldnt help but laugh and clap his hands over his face at this, and Maeless finally explained to us that he actually HAD been answering us. That he didn't work for the vampire... He only answered to the forest.

you can imagine there was a few minutes of roaring laughter, after which to save face, Bel literally punted him, sending him flying over the trees team rocket style. (Bel is kinda broken)

Many lulz were had. We will honestly never forget that, and our DM has pretty much vowed that he wont let us either.

You could see if they have the rules book online for you to review. A friend of mine downloaded the entire Rifts series onto his blackberry.

The only D&D I ever played was the Capcom games, I had friends who played this stuff, it wasn't for me.

There are actually many different DnD settings you know. Just as there is pure fantasy, steampunk fantasy and Horror fantasy, there is also from what the Dm tells me, a futuristic DnD setting too, called... Modern D20 or something? dont remember. I recall him mentioning that it was rather messy to work with though.

I've been somewhat curious of it, and it sounds like it might be cool, but I've never known anyone who plays it, so I've never had the chance. I'd love to check it out just to see where video game RPG's got all of their ideas from, if nothing else.

I was just thinking of D&D recently, from playing Dragon Age: Origins. My girlfriend's sister and her sister's husband had stopped by, and they're both big WoW fans. I was playing Dragon Age, and he commented how a lot of things were named similarly; like how Orzammar, the Dwarven city in Dragon Age, was close to the name of the Dwarven city in WoW. I checked this out online, and it seems like instead of Dragon Age taking things from WoW, they both took a lot from D&D. It just makes me wonder how big and intricate the D&D series might be, especially since it's lasted for such a long time.

lol

I've played a few campaigns with some of my college friends. Recently I took part in one that was in modern day, and somewhat apocolyptic. It was cool because the DM took many liberties to make the game even more open than it already is, in letting us forge our own weapons with everyday things. For example, duct taping a machete to the end of a hockey stick to make a scythe. Largely uneffective, but a functional weapon nonetheless. It's just fun to role play and see what you can get away with. I don't care for battles as much personally, just general interacting with NPCs and the environment and whatnot.

It's third edition, that's why it's such a pain to work with. Second edition was a way better system to work with. It was simple and you didn't have to concentrate so much on just figuring out your stats. But I haven't seen or heard of anyone using 2d edition anymore...kinda sad really as I myself, do miss it.

Damn. That was a long time ago for me, too. I think the last time I played was about 15 years ago or so. My friend's last campaign before I left was one based on Final Fantasy which we had never tried before. It ended being very much like The Golden Compass. Fun times.

Me and my friends used to play all the time. Its funny this topic appears now cause I was just talkin to a guy a work lastnight about DnD and MMOs. Anyway we used to play atleast once a week. But we didnt play conventionally we had more of a thought game goin. We didnt have maps we didnt have minis we rarely used dice. We basically just sat around and our DM gave us info about what was goin on etc and we told him what we were doin and based on how crazy it was hed determine if we succeeded and tell us the results

Hilarity ensued most of the time. Like one time my friend decided he was gonna take off his belt and tie it around his sword to make a spear and throw it at this boss type we were fightin in this arena in a town called Waysaway (which got its name when I was jokin around about how far away it was) he ended up doin it and when he threw it it came untied and the sword just dropped to the ground and didnt hit shit and his belt hit him in the face lol

Then... same time... we had another friend that thought hed be a ninja and climb on the cage ceilin of the arena and drop down on the boss from above... yeah...

Those were fun times. We all wanna get back into it and go all out and get the dwarven forge map tiles and all that crap but we have neither the time nor the money these days

I haven't played Dungeons & Dragons in years. Last time I played was at least 7 years ago. I'd like to play it again but there is a major lack of players from around where I am.

Not only am I a player of D&D, I have the books. On my desk. Right next to my computer.

If you can decide clearly on a setting, I will open a topic in which to do such gaming, if it is appropriate to the forums rules and general expectations.

Somewhere in this topic someone mentioned a Belmont character. This held my interest and, upon searching through my papers, (I write my own storylines, own settings, own dice rules, own spell and item lists, own monster lists, etc), I do in fact have a setting which is functionally a castlevania like setting, though as I said elsewhere, it does not feature Dracula.

I have three simple rules regarding such play though.

Firstly, if you wish to have a copy of the setting, ask, their intended to be free-source.

Secondly, no arguing and I have the right to veto things that might cause arguing, (i.e. two races that hate each other on same team, opposing alignments on same team, etc).

And thirdly, the object of the game is to have fun. I don't allow Player-v-Player combats until and unless both players are at least level 15.

I have about 50 completed settings and around 20 that are in various stages of completion.

Combat is slightly different and there are no alignment restrictions, a good or evil character could be played. Regarding combat: my version of combat uses Fatalities and Mystic Might. Fatality being a (skilled) users attempt to kill an opponent outright in various ways (heart shot for arrow, head strike for mace, decap for axe, heart stab for sword, etc), and Mystic Might being a (skilled) magicians attempt to do a lot more with the spell than is normal. (call lightning hits 2 instead of 1 target, fireball fires three homing fireballs instead of just 3 fireballs, stone-skin turns the skin into raw iron ore, etc).

RPing online sounds... annoying. We almost had a Mega Man Battle Network RP going on at another website. In fact, the website was specifically for that. It had a whole character creation system and battle system. but doing it online was such a hassle that it never got off the ground. All 3 times.

I tried playing Pen & Paper D&D with my roommates.

60 minutes later we all gave up and played Starcraft 2.

The game was too slow and it was a hassle flipping through all those pages of the book.

It was hard to keep track of the stats, too.

And the Dungeon Master was a dick as well.

I have said before and I will say it again: Traditional Non-digital RPGs will die within 50 years.

I like D&D. I haven't played it in about 5 years unfortunately. Even longer still (12 years ago to be exact) my first ever LARP was Vampire the Masquerade. Call me a dork if you like but I thoroughly enjoyed LARPing.

Your criticisms, Flame and JiPrime, are well founded. However I will address them as follows.

If I were to run such a game, I would use a greatly simplified version of the rules which I made, I would be handling all dice rolls through an automated dice roller, and would be calling upon the castlevania enemies we all love to hate, the items we've worked hard to get, and the locals (complete with their music), for the setting.

Essentially a players responsibility would be to maintain a text document which states clearly what their statistics, items, and abilities are, and to decide where they go and what they do. The game uses very simple, multipurpose statistics.

HP - run out of this and your dead.
Soul - Run out of this and your out of magic use.
Mysticism - rules how well you use and resist magic, mind control, and other 'mystical' stuff
Fortitude - rules how hard you hit, how much hp you have, how resistant you are to poison, etc
Willpower - rules how focused you are, how resistant you are to fear and intimidation, how well you both resist and use curse inducing abilities, and etc.
Intellect - rules how smart and savvy you are, whether its learning by experience or academic learning
Luck - rules rare drops, how often you dodge, how often you land critical blows, how often you notice cracked walls, etc

-All- dice rolling, -all- calculations, and -all- book work would be done by me, and, since I have a responsibility to the players, would be handled in a prompt and efficient manner.

Players would be able to chose any one of the following classes. [the text inside the parenthesis is intended to give an idea of what their like]

Hunter Warrior [Simon, Trevor, Christopher, Julius, Sonia, Richter, Grant Danasty, etc] Any Good Alignment
Hunter Warrior Uses the following Sub-weapons: Axe, Dagger, Silver Dagger, Gold Dagger, Boomerang, Rebound Crystal, Bomb
Hunter warrior uses the following familiars: Owl, Angel, Drake, Sword

Hunter Magician [Sypha, Charlotte, Yoko] Any Good Alignment
Hunter Magician uses the following sub weapons: Holy Book, Holy Water, Holy Flame, Holy Cross, Aguni
Hunter Magician uses the following familiars: Raven, Fairy, Mandragora, Doll

Specter [ghost character, equips powerful Auras in place of weapons but can equip some armor and accessories] Any alignment
Specter uses the following auras: Fire, Water, Soil, Lightning, Dark, Curse, Status, Blade, Blunt, Light, Wind
Specter uses the following familiars:Ghost 2, Flying Hand, Doll 2

Heroic Vampire [Alucard, D, Blade, others] Any good alignment
Heroic Vampire uses the following familiars: Owl 2, Sword 2, Drake 2, Raven 2
Heroic vampire uses many of Alucard's abilities and transforms

Demon [Equips some weapons, uses powerful Auras, and equips some armor and accessories] any evil alignment
Demon equips the following Auras: Soil, Air, Fire, Water, Blade, Blunt, Status, Dark
Demon uses the following familiars: Ghost 3, Imp 2, Bat 2, Mandragora 2

Evil Vampire [Dracula, Kain (from legacy of kain), others] Any evil alignment
Evil vampire uses the following familiars: Ghost, Imp, Bat
The evil vampire uses some of Kain's abilities, some of Dracula's abilities, and uses evil monstrous versions of Alucard's transforms.
The 'relics of dracula', which are his surviving body parts, can be equipped and used by this class, but it requires removal and replacement of your own body-part, similar to the hand and eye of Vecna.

I'm fully capable of making it truly epic and would wish to, but no story can be complete without the players. I have the documents on my desktop and so they would always be easily accessible to me. Note however that this takes place in a future time period, and so, while virtually all the weapons, armors, and items from the CV games are around, you could break open a cracked wall and find an oldschool ray gun or buy a defib kit from a merchant.

Talk to me. I'm game to do this if there is a genuine interest in it and I'm serious about making my storylines truly epic and fun.
