Come and get violated by the Dark Priest!!!
I've been doing these polls for a quite a few years now, and I've always included a reference to Shaft as sort of an inside joke. Let's face it, the Belmont name *and Castlevania* just haven't been the same since Richter got violated by the Dark Priest. The Shaft changed Castlevania forever.
And here's a little more Shaft bad-assery --the Rondo Resurrection!
Castlevania - Dracula X Chronicles Intro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=245TkRS2sGQ#ws)
-
That explains why Richter had no children, Shaft's violation kinda changed him forever ;D
-
Poor Richter.
-
"What's your name? Shaft..? Oh, heck! Why don't I just call you Palpatine."
-X
-
Even his HEAD looks phallic.
...
This guy really is a walking metaphor for "Mind rape".
And the more I think about it, the more im CONVINCED it was intentional...
-
The german narration makes it even more bad ass.
For such a powerful character though, he was relatively easy to beat in most of the games he appears in.
-
Thinking about it --I like the older sounding voice from the PS1 dub moreso than the younger DXC version.
-
not sure if anyone cares, but, Shaft made his playable debut in Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night...
-
I've been wondering how Shaft came to BE dark. I think theres a story there.

Maybe he was an alter boy that had a bad experience?

Catholic. Not funny at all, cecil-kain.

I thought it was.

Catholic. Very Funny Cecil-Kain ;D . Remember he also violated Maria('s mind) once! He's such a depraved... xD

You aren't a good catholic if you think getting fucked in the ass by your priest is funny. And you ARE going to hell if you feel that way.

It was a joke, I don't approve it in real life but this DID NOT HAPPEN. Get. Over. It.
-
Denominations are really irrelevant IMO. Catholic scandals just happen to be more widely publicized. Every good joke has an element of truth however. When I was growing up, some of the naughtiest girls I knew had fathers in the clergy. A strict religious upbringing causes a backlash in quite a few people. I heard Marilyn Manson was once an alter boy --or maybe that's just an urban legend...
-
Well there we disagree. Having read a small amount of the greatness of St. Thomas Aquinas, and a small amount of The City of God, I think that many of the social agendas that the catholic church makes are important. And many of the charities it sponsors of which there are many and not all of them are well publicized, do a lot of good. I certainly don't agree with the sex scandals and I believe that there are people in the machine that aren't fit to run it, but I agree with much of its philosophy and its mission. Is it the one true way to god is a whole other situation and I'm not going there.
-
Jeez, it was just a joke. Some people take this stuff waaaaay too seriously.
-
And to think that God is the only one with any sense of humor at all. Anyone who's really heavy into religion needs to relax at just let things slide or be. We'd have far less fighting and wars if they did just that.

I'm not the sort that has multiple crosses in every room and reads the bible at least three times a day. However, using humor to jibe at things that have done more good than every single person on the forum combined riles the hell out of me.
I would have reacted the same or similarly to any number of topics being jibed at. I'm not sorry I did it.
Finally and very simply, I would rather be ruled by intolerant Christians than jihadi assholes. I don't care if my stand point offends you.
For those of you who question my 'has done more good' comment, consider the following.
1. Preserving education and literacy throughout the middle ages.
2. Mobilizing european forces against the islamic invaders. People who say that the islamics weren't trying to invade europe repeatedly throughout the middle ages, are liars. Point blank.
3. Instilling some form of moral order during periods when you could get away with virtually anything.
4. Helping administrate over europe throughout the middle ages.
5. Various charities.
6. The lives of genuine saints.
7. Maintaining Europe as a group of christian states rather than an islamic khalifate.
The list goes on.
-
1. Preserving education and literacy throughout the middle ages.
This is, uh, entirely disingenuous. It was the islamic world that genuinely preserved the knowledge of the ancient world and expanded upon it: while the peasants and priests of europe were simply living and continuing forward, barely preserving literacy (the middle-dark ages in europe produced the least amount of work on philosophy or anything of the sort post-ancient Greece) and barely allowing for knowledge and understanding to continue, the islamic world was discovering and translating and preserving the works of the ancient greeks; of socrates, of plato, of aristotle; in turn, they expanded upon the knowledge bequeathed to them, charging forth through the arts and sciences. They, not the europeans of the middle ages, are responsible for much of western society as it has been since that time.
2. Mobilizing european forces against the islamic invaders. People who say that the islamics weren't trying to invade europe repeatedly throughout the middle ages, are liars. Point blank.
I doubt that "lie" is the proper term here, lie implies a semblance of awareness of the untruth, an amount of deliberateness; rather, these people are mostly just unaware. To them, what they spoke was truth. Ultimately, it may not have been, but that does not mean that they lied.
7. Maintaining Europe as a group of christian states rather than an islamic khalifate.
Art and science prospered under the islamic khalifate while the "christian states" did comparatively little. In that particular time period, I assert I would have rather lived under the khalifate than then the christian state.

Religion argues suck: fact
-
opinion. I rather enjoy them.
-
Fact. Monks and nuns were able to both read and write. Fact. Most of the colleges that are founded in the period have churchmen and/or churchwomen as teachers. Regardless of whether or not they expanded upon what was already present, when the minds of the masses were again ready to read and study the information, it was there to be found. I guess the Schoolmen (the philosophic group) and the Doctors of the church didn't exist. I said 'preserve' as in 'prevent from being lost'. I didn't say 'preserve' in whatever sense you believe it to mean erroneously. Fact, The almodivars massacred whole cities of people at a time for being non-islamic. Fact, when the invaders were stopped at Tours, france, they had already massacred huge numbers of people and in general terrorized the place. In regards to the works of the ancients, the church did maintain them. They were used to train translators of documents. Just because they were a rare commodity doesn't mean they didn't EXIST in europe.
What of my other points, Joachim? People often trash the church for being intolerant and for spreading rumors. Well, in any rumor, there is some truth. For every 100 people who -don't- do what the 'ugly' rumor says, there will be 1 or 2 that actually DO what their accused of. Trials of well-poisoners, counterfeiting alchemists, infanticides, and others who are generally lumped into the word 'heretic', do exist in the historical record. They exist in to great a number for -every single one- of them to be false. I'd rather say my prayers at night, even if I don't believe them at all, than drink from the well and die an agonizing death, or find out a maniac has kidnapped my child for indescribable reasons, or that every cent I have is completely fake and worthless. If anything, the church and states justices of the time were to LENIENT. To be a true justice system it must punish those of high or low station, no matter what.
X, if we let things 'just slide', our western non-islamic culture wouldn't exist. On the contrary, every culture that is living and vibrant needs people like me, who are staunch defenders of the section of the culture they adhere to.
-
So what does this have to do with Castlevania again?
-
You did not understand my post, Grim. I did not disagree with the sentiment that the church did its job and that it prevented a total collapse. It preserved material, yes, and it certainly created; but what it preserved, and what it created, paled in comparison to what the islamic world preserved and created. Similarly, I did not mean to imply that there were no ancient texts, but - as above - what they had access to paled in comparison to what the khalifate had. The part that mentioned that was removed because, aside from that, it was overly redundant and I lost interest in the post.
My not mentioning it was because it was not all that relevant: it was an already established fact, and my focus was on what the islamic world contributed compared to the meager contributions of the christian world.
What of my other points, Joachim?
They are of no concern to me. They're not well reasoned or rationalized, as with the ones I commented on, but not to such an obvious degree that I feel like replying.

To be fair, Islamic has done as much good and BAD to the world as Catholic church, and radical ones are far worse than Catholics however it doesn't matter in the end, it's how YOU act according to your beliefs and how much good YOU make the world, not your fellows believers.
-

I disagree, Shaft was better portrayed in Symphony than he was in DXC, better drawn too
(http://www.castlevaniacrypt.com/games/dxc/images/art/shaft-03.jpg)
i dunno but there's something awkward about his nose, maybe it's just me
Fuck you. No, I'm not sorry I said it, and I won't be guilted, bothered, or threatened into taking it back
Shaft was just a ghost, somehow he survived Richter's beating.
-
I always thought Shaft was a vampire too, I mean, he survived richter, then came back as a ghost, then came back again and violated Richter,,, he's not a pussy at all

Oh, of course; my point was really just that his point was historically inaccurate, and presuming that he knew (which knowledge of the islamic invasions would imply he did), that he wasn't being all that sincere in his presentation. lacking in frankness and candor, et cetera.

I dunno, I disagree. That nose is a lot better than most of the other noses people draw; its well proportioned and detailed.
-
It's pretty much the same nose too.
-
Wow, I come back from PAX-East to this nonsense?!?
Jesus Christ, I can't leave you kids alone for one weekend without hilarity ensuing.
Anyway, I just received a Private Message from Grim_Creeper saying he will not be returning to the forums.
Soooooo that's that.
I will go ahead and clean up this thread.
My final thought:
I always thought the Dark Priests
1. weren't Catholic
2. weren't even Christian
3. VIOLATED YOUR MIND, not your body. Cecil_Kain's polls always say "I don't know, my mind was recently violated by a dark priest"
I don't see how Christianity/Catholicism comes into play, here.
Buuuuuut none of that matters now, I suppose.

I always liked the fanon theory that the reason for the "no belmonts until Julius" thing was because of Richter's (temporary) corruption, and the no-Belmont time was for the family to atone for this. This does, of course, make Shaft the most successful individual Dracula minion (not counting Death). He resurrected the big guy twice, corrupted a Belmont, and can't stay dead! How did he come back in time for SOTN, anyway?

Well, if you noticed, in SotN he was transparent. In other words, it appears that he's a ghost. It would seem that Shaft is so deadicated to Dracula that he willingly serves him even after his death.
In terms of the "no Belmonts until Julius" thing, I think that it's possible that Richter actually used the vampire killer to kill any humans that invaded the castle. People tend to bring up the fact the Christopher Belmont's son was brought over to Dracula's side in Belmont's Revenge, but I don't think that he killed anyone and didn't have the vampire killer. Richter had it and it's possible that using it for evil corrupted the connection between the main Belmont bloodline and they needed to wait and atone for a century in order to return that connection to the way it was. This is just a theory though. If the Alucardvania and 1999 games are ever made, I would hope that they shed some light on this subject.
-
Christopher may have been corrupted, but he never fought Dracula and was never a Belmont "hero." He was one of the many Belmonts in-between resurrections, and never even got ot use the Vampire Killer outside of training/beating the snot out of his dad.
That's just how I always saw it.

Christopher was never corrupted. It was his son, whose name I forget.

Solieyu Belmont :)

Yeah, I meant Soleiyu, I just mistyped (hence the stuff about beating up his dad, Christopher).
So, is it "Soleil" ("sun") or a pun on "slay you," or both?
