Title: CV figures out!?
Post by: le052383 on November 10, 2007, 09:09:43 PM
Here is an ebay link that seems to have the NECA CV figure.

http://cgi.ebay.com/NECA-Player-Select-Castlevania-4-Figure-Set-IN-STOCK_W0QQitemZ160178639026QQihZ006QQcategoryZ348QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

I found this link on a toy forum I normally go to, which is
http://forums.toynewsi.com/index.php?showtopic=2032266&pid=16404311&st=75&#entry16404311

Is it me or did NECA gave Alucard and Dracula a bigger head. Maybe someone at the factory didn't scale the figures correctly from their 2-ups. At least Simon looks good. Dracula looks like crap, but it could be bad lightin'.

Simon looks pretty good, the succubus is alright...but man, what did they do to Dracula?

Unless it is bad lighting...

I don't know.....those don't really seem to be up to NECA standards. Something seems strange about those

I agree, but then again, the majority of what we've been seeing has been the display models. Display models are almost always painted more detailed than the actual shipping figs. Rarely you'll get shipping figs that have pupils not lined up perfectly(and it's off the eye).

But, the quality of the picture isn't really that good, so it might be the lighting. Simon's stubble seems more like red blush on his chin, like he has a rash from shaving. Dracula has WAY too much darkness around his eyes. Looks like he's wearing eye shadow. The Succubus doesn't look that bad, though. Alucard looks, well, funny. His face. I try to choke back the chuckles.

It looks like they closed Dracula's mouth like everyone wanted though.

They all look pretty cool to me, except Alucard looks....almost anime-ish. Like his skin looks too...smooth and perfect as opposed to Simon's. And is just me, or does Dracula look like an older, gray-haired version of IGA?

Can't wait to find these. though Dracula does look very odd

One thing I have learned, is that you can't tell what figures look like from pics online. You have to get them and then see.

I bought all 4 in a set because it was the only way to get Alucard.  I am keeping Alucard and the Succubus, but unless Dracula and Simon knock me over I am selling them.

There is no official confirmation when these are coming out.  Obviously someone has them, but NECA hasn't said anything on their main page or their blog.  Both Bigbadtoystore and figures.com say the generic "November" still. Since someone does have them, maybe they will be shipping this week.

I'm kind of curious as to where this guy on ebay got his.

if you click the link at the top, it doesn't work. I'm wondering if this is for real...

it's a shame, really..the display prototypes looked SO good. Simon and Succubus looked amazing, but now they just look ok. Dracula and Alucard are meh.

I'm hoping that those are just horrible paintjobs.

Now, I know that the figures they've been showing are prototypes and they always looks better. But there's no way this is NECA. If anyone's ever seen any NECA toy they look stunning. Up there in quality with McFarlane.

These just look like some cheap Hong Kong knock off that you'd find at a dollar store or something. Also, since I haven't seen any pictures of them anywhere else I don't believe they're real.

Hell, even the packaging looks crummy

Seriously?! Have you seen any NECA toys in stores? They look awesome. Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, all the Player Select and Cult Classics series look great. And I'm not just talking about display pieces they show online, the actual figures are great quality.

It would be sad to see their "A" quality figures go down to this garbage and still make it onto store shelves.

And if these are by some chance real, I will be completely and utterly upset

unfortunately, I'll probably still buy them regardless

I think the Street Fighter fans are worse, imo.  I mean, those Sota SF figures are quite bad in terms of character likeness(I own most of them,) yet some ppl defend SOTA that they are the best toy company around despite the constant plastic breakage, flawed paint, and unaccurate likness to the character.  Talk about lookin through rose-colored glasses.

At least the NECA CV figures on that ebay site still looks like the characters despite how different they came out compared to the protos; Alucard still looks like alucard, drac still looks like drac, and Simon still looks like Arnold.

bigbadtoystore and afx don't have them yet, and NECA hasn't updated so there's no confirmation.

Yeah, you're right. The last thing I bid on was the Jap SotN with the preorder and I never got that. It's a bitch to go through all the steps to have paypal give you a refund but I figure 'what the hell, might as well give it a shot anyways'. well, if I do win it I'll let you know if it's real or not

If you guys want pics, I don't have a digital camera, but I could do it on a regular one and scan the photo. It could take a while, though.

And it's weird...my card has been charged, and the figures are listed as being in-stock at Toy Wiz, but my order status is still blank. No e-mail saying they arrived, nothing. For anyone who has ordered stuff from them: is this normal? Do I have to wait until the order gets shipped to hear anything new?

I just lost my auction for my Closed Mouth Drac on ebay :(

But I did just buy Alucard and Simon off Amazon, so hopefully I get them next week. I'm just a little annoyed I can't find the closed mouth Drac anywhere other than one time on Ebay. I guess with most stores you don't really get a choice, but I don't like the open mouthed one so I'm not taking that chance just yet.

Also, anyone find out what the other Simon figure the Neca guys were talking about?? They said later on they could go back and do a CV2 or SCV 4 Simon so I'm guessing the secret one they have now is Chronicles. Anyone know anything about it??

Chronicles variant? Wouldn't that basically be a brand new figure altogether? I can see CV2 Simon and SCV4 Simon, as both look similar to original CV1 Simon. But Chronicles Simon, way different.

Correctly if I am wrong, but when has Simon never turned invisible in a CV game?

If not, maybe this variant represents that invinciblity potion or something.

I don't really care for clear plastic figures either.  I'm not sure what the fascination is.  If they had put out some other Simon variant, though, I would have been much more inclined to pick it up and the open-mouthed Dracula variant to go with it.  Instead of buying six figures, I'll most likely just buy the standard four, counting closed-mouth Dracula as the "standard," that is.  Does anyone happen to know what the case ratios are for the Dracula variants?

Interchangeable head sculpts for Drac would have been perfect.  If it was a simple matter of production costs, I'd have gladly done without the bat accessory.

Clear Simon?

um
Title: Re: CV figures out!?
Post by: Danial on November 25, 2007, 09:44:14 AM
The clear Simon is pretty normal for a variant.  There isn't much else they could have done to the figure without changing it's mold in some way which would add more money to the cost.  It also makes sense because that is pretty much what Simon does when he grabs the invincibility jar, which the figure also comes with.  There's also a reason they made this figure rare.  They knew not everyone would want it.

Personally, I thought they might do something like this, and I like it.  It makes sense toy wise and Castlevania wise.

Somehow, I don't think the cost of alternate paints outweighs the cost of alternate plastic.  Using a Simon's Quest or Super Castlevania 4 color scheme to paint the variant would have pleased many fans, even if the sculpts didn't differ between the standard and variant versions of Simon.  NECA could have produced such a variant in higher quantities and still expect to sell them because demand would be that much higher.  As it stands now, only the small number of completionists in the market will be interested in buying the "Invisible" Simon variant.  Less figures sold means less money for NECA.
Title: Re: CV figures out!?
Post by: Danial on November 25, 2007, 01:39:39 PM
All of the figures in this set were designed from the art of their respective games.  If you look at the art for Simon's Quest, CV4, and Chronicles NECA would have to make new parts for the figure to be accurate.  Which is always more expensive than molding something clear.  I would be very disappointed in them if they simply tried to repaint Simon without adding the necessary parts.

Also, in Lee's Toy Review #180, NECA has stated that if the line sells well they would like to make Simon in his CV2 and CV4 armor.

You might be disappointed, but you're likely in the minority.  I think many more fans would be much more excited for a CV2/SCV4 repaint of Simon even if it didn't feature any game-appropriate sculpt changes.  NECA could have released something like that for the first assortment and still have done a "proper" CV2 and/or SCV4 Simon in a future assortment.
Title: Re: CV figures out!?
Post by: le052383 on November 25, 2007, 02:37:19 PM
If Neca ever makes a cv4/simon's quest Simon, I can see them repaint him into a Simon's quest or a CV4 one.  The armor in cv4 and simon quest is similar to one another.

However, I don't think a repaint of a simon's quest or a cv4 one would work too well on the Simon figure that is out unless Neca replaces the existing shoulder pad with a more rounded one. as well as adding another one.

Something was definitely lost during the molding/articulating/painting stages, because the prototype Simon looked excellent. I can't fault the artist for the fact the packaged figures turned out not-so-great...

I would have rather had a copy of the unpainted, non-articulated original Simon sculpt than the finished figure.

At least then if I ever decided to paint it, I could do it properly.

This is pretty much always how it turns out.  The promotional photos are typically of figures of about twice the size they will be at retail, to show off all the attention to detail in the sculpt, and are carefully hand-painted to accentuate the sculpt and avoid any slopy lines between colors, etc.  When the figures are scaled down for mass production, sculpting detail is lost, and the paint aps are done more quickly and with less care to keep production time and costs down.

Hey guys, this is Infinity's End from your sister site, The Metroid Database.  I joined this forum to tell you guys my story.

I just recently purchased the Succubus figure off of Amazon for $15.  As I'm sure many of you already have noticed, the Succubus has an "addition" to the top of her corset.  Being familiar with how censorship works in this country, I'm sure the original sculptor was just trying to stay true to the artwork, but some big shot head had to come in and say no no no, cover 'em up.  Even the artwork on the back, which features all 4 figures, shows her with a more revealing chest!  (It was almost like they were trying to TELL us something)  So, since I'm not a big collector or anything, I had no problems opening up the box.  Her additional top is very obvious that it was a last-minute decision.  So I pulled out my trusty ol' exacto knife and slowly pushed off the top part....
Wheee, I have nipples!

Unfortunately as you can see, there were pieces of paint that came off when the piece popped off since it was glued on.  (they obviously do not want you to remove it)  I pulled out my flesh-tone paint and covered up the spots.
Yeah it's not exactly the same tone, but whatever, I'm happy with it.  You can barely tell unless you're looking up-close.  And it certainly looks better than it did.

Otherwise, I'm very happy with the figure.  She's definitely sexy, and after "modding" the figure a tad, she's very close to the original source material!  I can't say I like the 3 other figures as much as this one, which is why I only bought Succy.  I hope you enjoyed my little story!

(Don't forget folks, this is America, so anything that has to do with a nipple instantly means boobies, which instantly means sex, so you can't let any children see it!  Because SEX, boobies, and nipples are OFF LIMITS until you're 18!!)

In case you are kinda serious about making a custom Castlevania Chronicles Simon figure, Thaddeus, you can probably find some good tutorials on the web.  Red hair of the appropriate scale should be fairly easily to find among figures sold at mass retail, though getting something to approximate the softer Kojima face will likely be tougher.

Why are the succubus's nipples so high up?  I didn't know they had shitty boob jobs way back in the 1700's.

That Trevor statue looks great.  If you do make a Chronicles Simon custom, please keep us up to date.

Probably for the same reason she has a glittery magenta corset on... whereas when you look at the artwork here: http://castlevania.classicgaming.gamespy.com/Images/Scans/SotN/dx15.jpg
there isn't a shred of magenta on it.  Hell, they could have given it a deep red or even a brown overcoat, anything but magenta.  I'm also thinking since the nipples are a little to high, they might have been dissatisifed with it, and that's why they decided to put that extra piece on top.  I'm very tempted to paint over the corset now...

It seems like the only really good thing about her is her wings, which are translucent orange-red.  Really pretty.

Hey thanks man, I got a succubus and simon on the way and I'll be sure and modify mine too, adding additional coverage was bullshit. I want the figure to be the way the makers intended. :)

Post by: infinitysend on December 04, 2007, 11:16:27 AM
Hey guys,
Well, I've gone and done it.
The magenta coloring on her corset and boots were really bothering me, and I didn't like the tone differences on the breasts, so I repainted most of the figure.  It's amazing what a little gloss black paint makes!  I left her face and arms/hands untouched because I didn't want to risk screwing them up. Behold, the improved Succubus figure!

Yeah I like the black better, the magenta looked cheap but the paint you used creates a sort of sheen around the black areas. I don't know maybe it's just the lighting or the freshness of the paint.

The bad part is, I've had them on order with BBTS since August. I've got  two on order - one for openin and displayin, and a Collector's Edition for hangin' on the wall.

Thanks, glad you like it!  Well that's what happens when you use gloss black paint.  It's not like this kind of paint is rare, or expensive, or is hard to make, right?  The figure is just cheaply made.  And I don't know wtf they were smoking when they decided to add magenta to that damn thing... >_>

It was not cheaply made it all.  It had a different color than what you prefer.  I think your version looks smudgy and no where near as good as the original paint job.

I think Neca did well by not just repainting simon different colors for his variant, they're giving us Castlevania 1 Simon in this release and 2 in the next release, I would be majorly dissappointed if they just took the CV simon and painted him red and black or some other colors.

Yeah never understood what was going through iga's head when he thought that looked cool, oldschool blond/brown haired simon all the way.

She is wearing a push-up corset. It's actually very anatomically correct in that regard. The corset is pushing the base of the breasts up, causing the raise of the middle and top.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a critic when it comes to breasts in art.

Wow, and I absolutely couldn't care less what you think.  I didn't do this to satisfy you, I did it to satisfy ME.  So whether you like it or not, absolutely doesn't matter.

My brother saw the figures at a specialty figure store at my local mall. He said that Alucard looked the worse out of all of them and that the place where his hair is connected to his head is obviously lifted(his hair is removeable and they didn't take the time to glue it firmly to place). He said the other figures look good, though.

Your brother is right. I don't know what they did to Alucard, but his head is too big, and the hair looks ridiculous. I have two sets of figures and both the Alucards look the same.

Don't get me wrong, I love the figures, I just wish that Alucard looked more like his 2-up photos. IMO Simon is THE reason to buy these figures, he looks fantastic, and has awesome articulation.

I guess the factory NECA was commissioning didn't properly rescaled Alucard's head.  It happens from time to time with a lot of toy companies.  I mean, Mattel had a problem with scaling for their DC figures; Doomsday for instance, is actually shorter than Lex Luthor (in Kryptonite armor.)

My figures finally arrived.  I'm overall pleased with them, although there is a bit of paint slop here and there on some figures.  The factory accidentally inserted a Simon card into Alucard's box, though.  Looks like NECA's quality control is slipping a bit.

Ever since I first saw pics of the figures, Alucard always seemed "off" to me. His legs look weird.

Hey Wolfman, how did your Alucard turn out? Does the hair look a little "detached" from the scalp at all?
Also did you notice any paint rubs on the inside of the packages?

Neca may have rushed to get these figures out. I am curious to see if the second production run fairs any better than the first (paint aps, packaging, assembly, etc..).

Hopefully you got the "closed mouth" version of Dracula, because the other one looks a little silly. As I said before though, Simon is the BEST figure in the line by far IMO. (Just wish his leather whip was a little more flexible...)

of course they were rushed out.  Or, they were cheaply made.  Either way, we definitely know not that much care was put into them.  Certainly not as much as, say, a Todd Mcfarlane figure.  This is especially evident in the Succubus, who

1.) Has a "cover-up" top that was glued on at the last minute because you can't show nipples on a figurine and sell it w/out being related to porn in some way in this country.

2.) If you look at the back cover artwork, it obviously shows the Succubus without her top.  If you look close enough, you can even see a tiny little bit of the nipple is exposed.  Otherwise, it has been censored by the rose artwork that was also obviously just snatched from Ayami Kojima's beautiful piece.

3.) Magenta?  Come on... MAGENTA?

Alucard and Dracula mess-ups nonwithstanding, I think the more intelligent fans of this forum know pretty darn well how much "quality" was put into these figures.

But, we're still going to buy them anyway b/c they're all we got!

Yeah, they are definitely all we've got. You would think that after 20+ years of Castlevania games, something would be made in figure form, even if it was just Japanese gashapon. I always thought that was weird....

Anyway, I don't know if anyone has seen the Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust figure by Epoch, but I was hoping that's how the Alucard figure would've turned out. D is one awesome figure, worthy of anyone's collection....

The VHD Epoch figure is awesome. I have it and I'm glad I do. I don't know what Japan hasn't jumped at pumping out CV figs before. I mean, in the overall figure market overthere, EVERYTHING and it's mother has a figure line.

Using McFarlane figures as an example of quality is rather laughable.  I'd rather have decent figures then preety good statues.

On the bright side, Alucard and Dracula are sculpted by the Four Horsemen, who were the initial sculpters for Mcfarlane toys.

The 4h mostly sculpt Mattel stuff like the DC and He-man line, with a lesser extent of NECA stuff.  Because Hasbro now has the Marvel license, I am not sure if they still do Marvel Legend figures.

I think that piece of Alcuard's hair sculpt that looks "detached" is actually meant to be so for articularion purposes.

Neca, The Four Horsemen, and McFarlane have been having quality control problems lately, specifically with a certain manufacturer in China.  Hopefully this has been fixed since none of them do business with that manufacturer anymore.  This might also be why the figures were delayed to mass retail, but who knows.

Sadly, I'm still waiting on mine.

Even with the few problems mentioned, I would still rather have Neca making an articulated good figure than a McFarlane statue with breaking problems.

Oh god, how I've been dying for a GOOD company to sculpt figures for Marvel Comic characters. The only type of figures that do them any justice are the resins statues. Toy Biz, Hasbro, they've all came up short. I remember seeing the first sculpt of the Marvel Legends White Queen set, with the fireplace. Then the figure came out and she looked like CV Resurrection's Sonia, with a horsejaw and everything. I think they also painted her eyes cross-eyed.

If I read your post correctly, you are saying that you seen press release images of Emma Frost with the fireplace, but when the figure came out, it looked nothing like that since she has a horsejaw and such?  Just asking since if so, you are thinking of two different Emma frost figures instead of one; one was released under the Marvel Select line, the other under the Hasbro Marvel Legends line.  Just that the MS Emma Frost w/ the fireplace doesn't seem to have a horse jaw, though the ML version does.

Marvel Select.  This one comes with the Fireplace and the image above is the actual final figure rather than the prototype.

Hasbro Marvel Legends version.  this one seems to be the one you are talking about in regards of having a horsejaw and being cross-eyed. Again, this is the final figure as oppose to being press images or prototype

Unfortunately, the MS version is too tall to be place in a collection of Marvel Legends figures (MS figs are 7-10 inches, while the non BAF ML figs are 5 1/2-8)

Holy crap, they were different. But yeah, that Marvel Select one is good. The Hasbro one looks terrible. It's like her eyes are too close together.
