I made it for people who are doing Pseudo-retro (not really true retro, only halfway there) Games.
Please observe!
FakeTrevor Palette

More classic Leather-Brown Palette

And here are some animations:

You guys are welcome to use this for your games, just drop me a little line of credit on your end credits. :)

Nice sprites! :)
-X
-
Yup the texturing is nice. Can't tell from a glance, but are these 16x32 sprites or are they a little larger than the NES counterpart?
-
They're exactly the same size as the NES ones.
However, they're not the same if you chopped 'em up into a tiled spritesheet, as the NES repeats a lot of its tiled sprites and I don't.
Size-wise, this Trevor is the same dimensions as NES Trevor.
-
Nice work, that was fast. Seeing Minitroid must've really inspired you.
-
Well if I did MiniVania, he'd be even smaller still.
I was also inspired by that, but I'm more inspired by all the homebrew projects here in Fan Stuff as of late. They've got me stoked!
Also, Trevor has some company now. :3

Looks very nice! Good job!
-
Good Job!
I remembered this.
http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Weird/CV1/dora_p03.gif (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Weird/CV1/dora_p03.gif)
-
I remember that.
Akumajo Dracula for Mobile, yes? That was a while back, though those backgrounds are nice.
And yeah that's a nice Simon to go as descendant to my Trevor.
-
Yes, Akumajo Dracula for Mobile ver2.
Such NES remake is also good.
-
It's a really good Alucard, though I'm not sure if his outfit matches the times. I do like the fact that you gave him back his red cape.
-X
-
He's a knight in silver armor and dark tunic (Gambeson). The tunic, though it resembles his SotN Frock Coat, is not the same. It's more like these:
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.inverteddungeon.com%2Fjorgefuentes%2Fimages3%2F12-13-14-15century.jpg&hash=79b53e231e945c98b8896ed443370675e342b3e3)
The 2nd and 3rd are 13th and 14th Century, so although he has the same colors are the SotN version, it's not that same outfit, but more of a 13-14th century equivalent. :)
Also, this:
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.marsdenarchive.com%2Fgetpreview%2F00000151%2FMA-RO-032.jpg&hash=5885080daa8b4451d00f861aff8bbc4b1d9bbc34)
Image of Vlad Dracula III's statue, from the same time period, and DaddyBoy himself uses that same open jacket. :)
-
It's difficult to tell since Alucard's got that gold outline on his vest. But I would love to see him wearing some traditional
14th century Romanian cloths.

Made Mini-Alucard's Spritesheet. :3
He's the same dimensions as the NES version but now he's got more animations, since he's got this cloak and all...
I added both a regular bat plus his SotN batform (for variety and 'cuz I didn't know which one to use).
Here are some animations:

The larger bat works for the 32-bit Alucard so use the smaller bat for the smaller Alucard. It just works better that way. Unless you wanted to use the AoS Soma bat transformation. It's just as small but looks very similar to Alucard's larger bat formation.

-
Very nice. Can't wait for Sypha.
Think you'd be up for a CV3-style Leon?
-
It's not impossible. I did do the one up on the forum banner.
But I'd need to know what his moves are.
-
Still deciding. He'll have Trevor's moves, and one or two extras maybe. And by the way I'm talking 8-bit style. After that you can go mini if you want. :p
Yeah the banner is cool too. I never actually really noticed everyone in it until you pointed that out just now. Very nice.
-
I'm not sure how I'd do a 3-color Leon. It's possible, sure, but I'd need to know what the exact limitations you'd want are. Also, the color scheme would have to match the LoI Leon so he'd likely have CV2 Simon's Colors.
-
Can't you just use a paint program like Adobe or Corel and reduce the number of colors in the character sprite?
-
It looks like crap if you do that. Really amateur-ish. I recommend never doing that, honestly.
Here's my Mini Leon Belmont's basic walking sprites:
(EDIT: More sprites are available now!)
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.inverteddungeon.com%2Fjorgefuentes%2Fimages3%2Fsprites-NES-LeonBelmont-1-1.png&hash=49edd6f0f074c9b8addf857221a18096ec896b3c)
And here are the sprites as an animation:

Can't you just use a paint program like Adobe or Corel and reduce the number of colors in the character sprite?
If you pay attention to Jorges' sprites, you can't just reduce colors, you'll need some editing.
0000
EDIT
0000
OOOH those are already 3-colors. Nevermind :D I edited my first post.
I'm a little iffy on the extensive use of black/off-black. I can't really use blue either. But that IS what he looks like, so I'll have to figure something out. Or just be really really careful with my level design. Thank you so much, though. Now back to my coding before I have to go to bed.
-
Well you could use plain black (0,0,0). I only picked off-black so that it can show up against the black background of the forum.
Fun fact: if you do that, he'll have Simon's palette from Simon's Quest.
EDIT:
I just re-read what you said. Did you mean that the graphic overall is using too much black? I think that should be OK since the rest of the sprite uses large amounts of white or off-white, so the contrast will still be there. I use black sparingly on the biceps and on the pants, again more akin to how Simon's colors are in CV2.
I'm more concerned that he would look too pale or would have too many non-defined parts because of the reds. Well, you let me know how it turns out, should you decide to use him.
-
There is an easy way around that problem actually. Kinda too lazy to make a mock level to make a screen shot and demonstrate though.
-
Challenger Approaching! :O

-
AWESOME.
Now it does need a game.
-
Love it. But it looks like she's in bare-feet.
-X
-
Yeah, that's on purpose. She's wearing sandals.
-
cant wait to see Grant =D
-
What's the "easy way around it"? Bear in mind this must be NES capable and NO OUTLINING. I cannot stress enough how ugly the GBA sprites (or was it DS?) were because of that hideous outlining used.
*gets giddy for Sypha*
I'm just saying in dark areas, even with off-black (i'll probably be using a different palette than what you used unless you and I have the same palette. ... Dur, that made 100% sense!), the black parts will still likely be obscured by the backgrounds. Granted, there aren't many frames where that would be a problem, but the ones where his black parts overlap the background trouble me.
I was considering using a VERY DARK brown for the black parts, maybe a grey or light yellow/orange for the white parts, and likely palette 15 or 16 for the red parts (but I'm worried about too much of 16 being used, since it's already used for flames, hearts and bats). Of course this color scheme would give him a more haggard appearance, but that may be ultimately what I'm going for. We'll see when I get there.
The reason Simon's CV2 palette is an issue is because the color contrast was horrible in CV2. An orange/brown hero stands out against a blue/green background better than a red/white hero stands out against a grey/purple background. CV2 wasn't darker location-wise, it was darker character-wise. My game will (hopefully) be dark, but I'm not sure CV2-dark is the kind of dark I want. But I DO want Leon and Leon's colors are what they are, so we'll see.

(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.inverteddungeon.com%2Fjorgefuentes%2Fimages3%2Fsprites-NES-LeonBelmont-2-1.png&hash=967f1e7e1a0dc7eec5358bb7a7078c259bc8abf3)
This is using colors from the NES Palette, including the mask color (Thanks, Uzo).
This is the best you're gonna be able to do without using pure black, in my opinion.
-
What's the "easy way around it"?
In short; there are a select few colors that are near black enough to be the darkest color of the palette, and still stand out well against black.
My suggestion would be to use this palette for Leon; (see attached)
-
I see you chose the other Red.
That was my 2nd choice but I thought it'd look a little dark so I picked the other more purple-ish red.
-
Yeah, the NES never had a bright/middle red color. I also chose the darkest shade of the orange/brown column.
As a fun quip, Megaman used the red I chose for Rush and the purple you chose for Protoman. In Megaman 9 and 10, I believe they changed to the red I chose, only because they brightened the whole NES palette to where it became a better match.
@TheouAegis and anyone else interested...
Technical detail goodies;
From my understanding, the brighter palette that Megaman 9 and Megaman 10 used, along with the majority of emulators by default, is the color information based on the NES's internal color information. In other words, the NES's internal palette data suggested that is the color it will display. However by the time it gets processed and put out to to the TV screen, it seems a lot darker. This is the NES hardware, not the TV that is at fault.
I think there is a mild difference between the NES and the remade re-release NES console too, where the remade console was a tad brighter and different.
Attached is the palette that is about as close to a real NES TV output as you can get. I've always found emulators to look off. And I wasn't sure quite why. I kept thinking in the back of my mind that it just seems off for some reason. Not how I remembered it from my childhood. This is why. Emulators don't use the palette you'd expect to see from a real NES on a TV.
If you are serious about making this look right, and I wholly encourage it, then use the palette I have attached below. It will surely give your game an authentic retro look.
-
Dude, those sprites are excellent. I'd love to see those in a future release, I'm interested.
-
Saved the palette. The most tedious part will be ripping the sprites again in the proper palette. "nearest color" never works if I just try to change palettes (when the palette is different). I probably just need to stop using YY-CHR for my NES ripping, since it saves the current 4-colors and Paintshop Pro reads/writes based on those whenever I try to change palettes. But it's such a convenient program since it was made with the NES in mind.
-
Just use a color replacer to recolor the sheets with it. No need to re-rip. Also what emulator do you use? I have palette files for fceu already made.
-
FCEU here too.
And recoloring the sheets doesn't change the GM sprites. I'll have to reload the sprites into GM too.
-
I'm confused now.
Are you making:
1. a homebrew PC game?
2. a homebrew Retro (NES-looking) PC game?
3. a ROM hack?
4. a ROM homebrew?
I'm lost as to what you're doing now.
-
FCEU here too.
See attached palette file. Remove the ".txt". I added .txt to the end so the forum will accept it as an upload.
And recoloring the sheets doesn't change the GM sprites. I'll have to reload the sprites into GM too.
No shit, but it's ridiculous to re-rip them just to change the colors. And why would that matter anyway? Don't you have a global palette?
-
GM doesn't do global palettes. There will be a guideline I'll write up for my game outside of GM to help me remember what colors are use, but GM is a 32bit game and even worse lacks palette swapping functions. However, and this is one reason I typed up a script to search for and return the indexes of the NES palette, someone did make a slow script that replaces colors in sprites that I'm going to mess around with next month and see if it will allow me to create a default greyscale sprite sheet to work off of, although again, this would require me to consolidate my sprites (not too big of an issue, since the enemies are already in a custom sprite sheet with the NES palette). But some sprite sheets don't have an NES palette actually saved to their file info and some do but the palette is different. In my sample engine right now, the one I'm working on just to get the coding figured out and tweaked, I have, like, 3 different NES palettes -- FCEUS, YYCHR and one off the internet. Eventually I will have to get everything on the same page. And some of the sprite sheets I was using were wrong, from rippers either ripping from screenshots or using tile rippers but using 0D/0F as the mask color (THOSE COLORS ARE ALREADY IN USE IN THE SPRITES, DUMBASSES!!). >_> Some rippers make me facepalm IRL.
@Jorges: homebrew retro. You can use my engine to make a non-retro-looking homebrew, but mine's going to be homebrew retro-looking.
-
nice stuff! I may have a use for some of these. ^__^

Sure Inccubus! Feel free (just drop me a little line of credit if you use 'em).

Woaw, awesome, Jorge! We need to make a CVIII remastered for CV's 25th Anniversary xD
-
I still have my Castlevania Chronicles: Dracula's Curse C++ Code homebrew. These sprites are too small for it though. These are for anyone else who'd like to do a project with tiny cute sprites.
Castlevania Chronicles: Dracula's Curse Walkabout(1/2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPnIBhB2WPA#)
My old Homebrew. :)
Castlevania Chronicles: Dracula's Curse Walkabout(2/2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v36VMKOoKo0#)
-
There is some good stuff in this thread. I may need to contact some of you guys for help when I start needing some new tiles for the hack. 8)
-
Wait, was the area with pillars the catacombs or Atlantis? I thought the catacombs was just rocks and skulls and drippy water.
And it looked like you had working stairs in those vids. ... Or was that cuz it was C++ and not Game Maker that everyone wanted my Trevor script?
BTW Nice Sypha. I am happy now. ... Happier.
-
It was programmed in Visual C++ by a friend of mine.
It was not at all done in Game Maker.
Thanks for the kind words regarding Sypha. She's cute. :3
-
Can't wait to see Grant :) and Dracula!
-
I love that homebrew, it's got a Super CV IV-esque atmosphere to it.
One question though, did you emulate Richter's moveset for Trevor?
-
No I didn't. Trevor pretty much behaves like Simon from CV4 (sans the whip brandish and multi-directional whipping) but with the mobility of Richter from Rondo of Blood.
-
^ That's awesome. I was just curious, it's all, because Trevor's jumps look almost identical to Richter's.
-
I'm nothing short of amazed when I see well-made sprite edits, cuz I definitely don't have the patience to make them! Any chance of having a Castlevania HD Simon belmont sprite made in the same fashion? Even though there's only a select few new animations, the slide and bounce animation adds a few new possibilities...
-
Once again, amazing work here Jorge. Really shows some talent.
-
Very cool updated sprites!
-
they must get used on castlevania 3 remakes .. after your permission of course XD so may i use them ?
-
I am new here and have a question; Do you take personal requests or have a Sprite Request section on the forum?
-
@TheBelmontHunter: Sure, you can use 'em. Just drop me a line of credit in whatever project you're using 'em (Jorge D. Fuentes)
@darkmanx_429: When I have the time, and am motivated enough, I work on random CV projects, so you can ask, but I wouldn't be able to tell you when I'd get them done.
Also, I'm updating this with an old file I made a long while ago: NES Richter
It's using some NES colors which is why the color is weird, but you can use any colors you want to make it less brown and more blue, and it'd work:
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.inverteddungeon.com%2Fjorgefuentes%2Fimages3%2FRichterNES.gif&hash=d487e402461a43e928ea8f4d27f938662a92eefa)
-
Why do these Alucard sprites have dark hair? Alucard is blond.
-
He didn't always have that blonde hair color, you know.
He originally had jet black hair (CVLegends, Dracula's Curse). The platinum blonde did not happen until the late 18th century (Ayami Kojima's 2nd Alucard rendition and his look until Dawn of Sorrow).
But back in Dracula's Curse days, he had black hair.

I would love to have you do some CastleVania/Contra hybrids for my project if you are interested!
I am bit of a spriting king myself and am redoing as well as custom spriting things for my game.If you are interested you can hit me up on a PM and we can talk more! I also wanted to discuss with you about adding a sprite rip/request thread to the forum....
-
Not everyone here does sprite rips, but I think enough do that it could be alright to have a thread.
You can PM me. I do music and sprites.

Sounds good man, i'll PM you. That's great news about the spriting rip threads! I think it'll make good edition to the forum. I also meant to ask, do you get a higher forum rank if you contribute something to the forum like music, or a fan-made game even though you might not have so many posts?
-
If you contribute stuff you might get an Artist or Hack Master award, but this forum doesn't really do "Rank" that much. We do have it, but it's just a name title (although if you're in the absolute two lowest ranks you cannot even post links).
You're already ranking in "Hunter in Training" so you've passed those ranks.

Cool man, I was just wondering because I am seriously considering becoming a full-time member here. Do you accept new admin? I would like to apply for one of those positions in the future if possible.
-
There are two admins here, and enough mods to cover most time zones.
But we welcome you to stay.

Cool man, maybe something will open up in the future...did you get my PM?

I got it and responded.
