Skullgirls, The All-Girl Fighting Game, Grabs Castlevania’s Musical Maestro
http://kotaku.com/# (http://kotaku.com/#)!5793792/skullgirls-the-all+girl-fighting-game-grabs-castlevanias-musical-maestro
If you've played a Castlevania video game from the past decade, you've likely enjoyed the musical stylings of Japanese composer Michiru Yamane. She's the musician behind Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and dozens of other Konami games.
Now she's scoring indie 2D fighting game Skullgirls, lending it some jazzy flair.
Yamane, who can boasts more than 20 years worth of video game scores, from Twinbee to Contra: Hard Corps to an impressive ten Castlevania games, will be handling musical duties for the upcoming fighting game, due sometime in 2011.
"After seeing the game's distinctive artistic direction, and discussing its beautiful premise with Autumn Games and Reverge Labs, it was easy to be inspired," Yamane said in a statement. "Because Skullgirls has such a unique style, it is important that the music both complements and adds to the game's atmosphere. I think fans will be very happy with the direction we are taking." Yamane further explains her involvement in the downloadable fighting game in the announcement video above.
We recently got the chance to go hands-on with Skullgirls, which is planned to come to HD consoles this year.

You mean to tell me Kotaku ran an article an all-girl fighting game, and Brian Ashcraft wasn't the one who did the story? Consider me shocked. Maybe he had some big-boobed action figures to cover instead.
-
Ha, I remember concepts and a bunch of art for that game years upon years ago. It's pretty great knowing that it's finally leading somewhere and to hear Yamane is composing for it is certainly a surprise I welcome. Hopefully, the jazz focus will allow her to branch out and be more experimental or daring in her work.

I wish she had said she was working on music for a new CV game.....I love her music very much and will definitely listen to her new work on other games. I keep fingers crossed that she releases her own album one day.

which tune from Symphony does she mean when she says her favorite tune is "symphony of the Night"? or does she mean the OST as a whole?
-
I believe she means Symphony in a whole, as I recall her stating that somewhere before.
However, I do also recall hearing/reading Wandering Souls was her favorite from Symphony if I'm not mistaken.

Dunno.. after Order of Ecclesia I honestly don't miss Yamane that much. She probably needed to take a break from the series. Don't get me wrong; It was a good soundtrack and all, but it just wasn't up to par with some of her other work. "Wandering the Crystal blue" was incredible though, almost SotN level.
I want Sotaru Tojima and Hiroshi Mitsuoka (both CotM) to do another Castlevania soundtrack. Proof of Blood... Fate to Despair... Catacombs.. AWESOME songs.

Nice interview, thanks for sharing.
I liked a lot Yamane's works, from SotN to more recent scores like OoE, particularly CoD which is almost perfect IMO. Each one has its good and bad tunes but the overall is great.
I'd like to hear arrangements of MY's tracks in a LoS game. Fully orchestrated, it would be a pure dream! (C'mon, Cox and Aurajo, make it realz) :)

It could be because of awkward translation, but it's possible she's referring to Moonlight Nocturne/Nocturne in the Moonlight/Symphony of the Night, the opening credits scroll theme, from Symphony. Which I wouldn't hold against her.

It's funny you'd mention those three tracks, because they're all Tojima, and all he composed for the game (not counting the multiple arrangements, for which direct credits do not exist, to my knowledge). I like the work, but I kind of wonder about a duo who can only muster six original tracks for a whole game.

She's mentioned that one of her favorite tune is Dance of Pales, by the way. She was quoted saying so in one of the interviews, but there was another tune she liked, and I don't remember what it is.
Her particular words I recall were something like "I also liked making the music for Olrox's Room" (JPN name for Olrox's Quarters).

Yamane has aged... -_- :(

See, to me some of OoE's songs were amazing and also distinct from most of her other work. I especially loved Jaws of a Scorched Earth and Hard Won Nobility.

Hard Won Nobility is by Yasuhiro Ichihashi. But yes, it's great. Tracks like that are the reason Ecclesia stands head and shoulders above the other DS efforts.

so..an interview without the most relevant question of all..will she ever make a temporary comeback to the CV composing??????????????????????????
