Title: What anime have you been watching?
Post by: darkjak951 on April 24, 2011, 07:31:58 PM
Me, I have been watching a lot of Sengoku Basara and Needless lately, both are fun watches. I also have been keeping up with Tiger and Bunny as well as Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and both are excellent. Finally for the more "long winded shounen" anime, I have been keeping up with One Peice as well since I find it way more entertaining than Naruto, Bleach, Soul Eater, ect. Have you guys been watching anime lately? If so, what are they?

Samurai Champloo

It's rare for any anime to keep my attention nowadays (used to have a lot of favs).. maybe cuz i'm getting old, but I'll always appreciate quality stuff like Sam Champ (and Cowboy Bebop, ironically from the same creator)

I love any series made by Watanabe, always great music, atmosphere, and especially animation/style.

as well as Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn

I haven't watched any anime in a long time but absolutely love the Universal Century series of Gundam, and Wing. Anyways, I've been in the mood to watch me some Gundam lately, is Unicorn more like the older gundam, or more like the newer seed stuff?

It's like any UC gundam series surprisingly, nothing like Gundam SeeD or 00(i am talking mostly bout' it's second season and the movie). Every fight scene is completely detailed with debris, machinery, ect. It looks VERY nice and it makes waiting half of a year for every episode worthwhile.

Currently watching The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Seven episodes in and it's probably the most rad anime I've ever seen. Hope it continues to be this good till the end.

It really does, definitely watch that and the other series. Though I don't recommend that you watch Macross 7 though, it's trash in my personal opinion compared to the original. Macross Frontier isn't my favorite either, kinda devoid of a few things that make the Macross series great but it is still worth watching.

Sailor Moon, season 4. Almost done with the whole series. Other favs include Project A-ko, the newer Released Guyver series, watched season one of Magic knight Rayearth (still trying to find season two). Seen all of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Growing up I also watched Astroboy and Thunderbirds 2086.

I've seen Macross Plus probably a million billion times. Definitely my favorite anime, ever. (Should clarify that in my previous post, I meant The Super Dimension Fortress Macross is probably the raddest anime TV series I've ever seen.)

Ah yes, Sailor Moon. I can never get tired of watching SM. Certainly a classic. Also, the manga of Magic Knight Rayearth is better in my opinion, as they changed stuff around in the second season of the anime and plus, I just enjoyed the manga more for whatever reason. Good anime series though. Just don't look into the OVA of Magic Knight Rayearth. It's NOTHING like the anime or the manga, lol.

As for me, I've been thinking about finally watching Slayers Revolution and Evolution-R. Seeing as Slayers is one of my all-time favorite anime series, I really should watch those. I have Revolution on DVD...but during 2 different moves in a year's time span, I've lost one of the discs to it somehow. I plan to watch Baccano! first, seeing as my friend says it's the best anime ever. I'm sure it IS good judging by clips I've seen and what I've read, but...

I would be watching some anime now, but college has been a ***** this semester. During the summer I plan to somewhat catch up on my anime and games. Hopefully this summer I can look into newer anime too. I've seen nothing but oldies lately, lol. Black Butler II (or Kuroshitsuji II) was the most recently released anime I've watched in a while (and that was a while ago).

I stopped watching anime... I only really read manga nowadays, very rarely do I watch anime.

That said, if you guys like comedy, I highly recommend Nodame Cantabile. The manga, anime and live action are absolutely superb.

Ha! I'll admit I've been watching this, veeeeeeeery sloooooooowly. It's difficult to get through more than one episode in a couple of weeks' span. It's really just a T&A anime with a few amusing quirks. I thought the first episode started off great, but it quickly became very dull. Still, it amuses me enough to want to finish it eventually.

Eh the DMC anime was OK, kinda bland without much story though. Not that much effort really, Sengoku Basara was probably a better capcom anime in my opinion...

I guess devil may cry could do better if it featured more lady and trish but bleh.
Claymore was good but kinda of corny if you know what I mean.
Black Butler was very interesting and funny.
Im only on the first Fullmetal Alchemist.

You should skip the first Full Metal Alchemist altogether, imo. It's actually a remake, and not a sequel.
Claymore, i thought was very good until it deviated heavily from the manga and ends.

I just knew something was up with Claymore!!!
So I just watch Brotherhood?

Have netflix so it isn't a problem for me to a lot of animes like everyone does here.

Brotherhood follows the manga's story right through to the end. The original anime does not, as the manga was still ongoing at the time it was made, thus it diverges at a certain point and does its own thing. I wouldn't say it's awful, but it's hard to top the "real" story.

Claymore's circumstances are similar, but as far as I remember, it only affects the ending. I'd recommend it anyway. You can always read the manga later.

I stopped watching Claymore right at the battle up north wherever. because thats where it deviates and creates an ending.

Does it really matter that an anime series differs from the manga? The Hellsing TV series differs quite a lot, and that kicks the shit out of the OVA series which does follow real closely the manga.
Title: Re: What anime have you been watching?
Post by: Puwexil on April 26, 2011, 03:07:33 PM
That's crazy talk. The only thing it has over the OVA is Yasushi Ishii's music. It's a premier example of a studio going nuts with their own boring ideas when they run out of source material to work with. The same thing could've happened with the first FMA adaptation, but Bones turned it into a pretty neat alternate version of the story. I believe Arakawa was consulted to some degree, so that probably helped too.

You're kidding right? The TV series sucks in comparison to the OVA. The only thing that really sucked about the OVA was the release schedule. That said, it does not matter that it differs from the manga, but 99 times out of 100, it sucks in comparison. I actually liked the first FMA, but it got shitty real fast, that it became unbearable for me to watch. That was even before I found out it differed from the manga.

I love the Hellsing TV show and like the direction they took it in. Ultimate is pretty cool too, but in my opinion all it really has over the show is a higher budget. I think given what they had, the show actually has better art and animation considering. It's just a cooler show with much better talent behind it. Buuuut, I know I'm in the minority, "has no Nazi vampires," yaddayadda. Despite being a fan of the manga, that weird Incognito guy is way more interesting to me.

And yeah, there's also the music too, of course, which helps add to the stylish awesomeness of the show.

URP, NOPE, I'M JUST KIDDING, HURP DURP DURP DURP

Of course I'm not fucking kidding, sass-mouth. ;)

I don't know what's so appealing about sub-par animation when you could have gorgeous animation. Or we-don't-even-know-ourselves-what-is-going-on plotting when you could have an entertaining free-for-all, over-the-top war scenario. The OVA even has Norio Wakamoto.

Sometimes Animation can be really crappy but there are the other elements that drag you in, put you in a submissive hold and there's just no way to escape until you've finished watching the flick.

To be fair, I've only seen the first four episodes of Hellsing Ultimate, but I think the beginning stuff that both series covers is done much better in the TV series, and I don't see how this can be disputed because the whole first episode of Ultimate is incredibly rushed and just whizzes past everything; yet the fourth episode is incredibly redundant, drags things out to seemingly no end, and is just a gigantic waste of the 45 minutes it was given to tell and show something. Everything covered in it could've maybe been done in 25 minutes, leave the rest of the time for something more interesting. The TV show never once bored me like that.

I also don't think the humor is incorporated/executed very well in the OVA series, even though it tries to follow the style and art of the manga. The TV series pretty much left that out (save for the awesome "spirit of Harkonnen" shorts at the end of every episode), and for good reason.

The animation and art in the OVA series are pretty, sure, but there's something about the TV series that strikes me as having more craft even though the funds are limited and the animation isn't always the greatest. Better drawings and use of color, I think. It's probably accurate to say, however, that the OVA series is drawn more closely to how Kouta Hirano draws.

Yeah, that's why I like it. The quirks of his style come off better, like the thick outlines and exaggerated limbs. The art direction in the original anime is just kind of plain, especially for a series where much of the main appeal is in the visuals.

It's not like the TV anime is fresh on my mind at this point -- must've been at least six years ago that I saw it -- but even then I couldn't really get into it like I thought I would (sans music). Then I read the manga and it was like "oh, so that's why."

He actually should watch the original series first, people are actually quite divided on what version is better. Personally I think the original series tells a better story, however Brotherhood is great for building suspense and has some very well animated fight scenes. Can't go wrong with either, but I would watch the original series first.

I'll agree with everything you said except for the animation part. You can have an Anime that has gorgeous animation, but has no soul. Take Gunslinger Girl, which looked pretty damn good for it's time but had probably the dullest characters, weak fight scenes, and a weak story with a sub par conclusion. Thankfully Hellsing Ultimate has some good animation and a pretty good story, not the best in the world but it's alright. Never finished the TV series.

I was talking strictly Hellsing TV vs. Hellsing OVA, you know. Not in generalities. I'm sure there are plenty of series where the animation is the weakest link, yet remain enjoyable because of their other strengths. It just so happens the only notable strength of the original Hellsing adaptation was the music, especially comparatively. I can always just listen to that on its own, which I oftentimes do.

SO I watched the part of the  first episode of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Im wondering if im watching it right.
Because when I first see a television show or movie with the origin taken from the plot or in other words like they made something you are already supposed to know. Now a lot of you said brotherhood is seperate from the first fullmetal alchemist for being closer to the manga. Am I supposed to read the manga first before I watch?

No that first episode kinda gives you an idea of what the Brothers and the other state alchemists can do. Otherwise, bear through the next 13 or so episodes since it will feel like an abridged version of the first TV series, they just do it the way the manga did it and get used to some characters not being a central character anymore(like Rose not being Ishvalen OR a central part of the story.....at all). Beyond those episodes though is something truly unique and totally worth watching if you are a fan of the manga or even the previous tv series.

Anyway, yeah finished Needless and it pissed me the hell off. 10 episodes was spent in the same room, granted there were some different fight scenes and stuff and some flashback episodes in the middle of a few showing some different scenery but it felt like i was watching DBZ. Now I liked that kind of thing in DBZ but, why is it bad in this series? The answer is simple: The series is 24 episodes long, ridiculous. Don't even get mee started with the shit ending. If anyone watches this series, watch it PURELY for the action. Then read the manga, you'll appreciate it more.

Nuthin'.

But sometimes I listen to the ending theme from Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory:
Jacob Wheeler Magic - Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory OST (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNp1dQYK8T0#)

It's nostalgic as all get out.  It really takes me back to the late 80s/early 90s, which was a magical time for me that I often romanticize about.  It's pretty great that they put this at the ending of an action cartoon about giant robots.  They knew the beauty of what they were doing.  Lastly, Jacob Wheeler's a credit to brown skinned people everywhere.

Well I finally finished Soul Eater. The ending was a bomb, definitely could have been handled better. Stuff like this makes me remember why I hate anime that is made based on manga when the manga itself isn't complete and/or they end the series before the manga was actually over(good example: Rurouni Kenshin, which I'll admit was a decent anime and is only missing the last plot arc...which kinda irked me).

Has anyone watched Record of Lodoss War? I remember watching some episodes of this (I used to rent dubbed anime from Hollywood Video a long, long time ago), and I thought it was okay, but never got to see a whole lot of it.

Both are awesome. Must sees.

Recently I watched some other anime that take place in the same world as Lodoss. Legend of Crystania (the movie and OVA series), which kicks ass, and Rune Soldier, which also kicks ass.

It's not anime, but I recently watched Æon Flux. It rocks my dick. I also revisited Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust for the billionth time. Was pleased to find out the voice director is the same for both. Swell dude, but I'll never understand his choice for the voice of Left Hand... Sounds nothing like him, and his dialog's all screwy too. Read some translated dialog from the original Japanese script and it's much more true to his character, and I would love to hear the Japanese voice track for the film, especially since the voice actor for Left Hand in the original film reprised his role.

Oh, and I'm very slowly going through the original Dragon Ball and will venture on to DBZ. Been wanting to see these shows uncut and subbed since 1995 and 1996 (when they first aired in the US on syndicated television), lol. Thank goodness for the DVDs of the original series FUNimation released a number of years ago, and for the DBZ Dragon Boxes; I don't care for the video transfers of the other US DVDs for either show.

AAAAAAND, I'm watching the original Fist of the North Star. Very slowly with that, also. These shows tend to drag on a lot, ha ha—and with this one, most episodes feel the same. Certainly follow the same formula, anyway. It's just a never-ending video game. ENTER NEW STAGE, FIGHT HORDES OF MINIONS THAT ARE ALL THE SAME, FIGHT NEW BOSS, GET ONE STEP CLOSER TO FINAL BOSS (who I'm sure won't be the final, final boss judging by the movie).

Watched Patlabor 1 & 2 (the movies) last night. I liked 2 the best. And the late Satoshi Kon worked on the scenery in P2. You can see some of his quirks in the backgrounds if you pay attentions. In such a tense, serious movie, Kon's backgrounds add a little lightheartedness to the whole thing.

Haven't decided what I'll watch tonight. Going through my old tapes while I clean them out.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. If anyone wants to buy my 7 fansubs of Hamelin The Violinist (the entire series and the 30-minute movie), just pay for shipping and the cost of the box and Ill mail it to you. If you're a stickler for actual animation, you won't like it, since the show's not known for having a lot of actual animation in it.   :)

I re-discovered the Armored Trooper VOTOMS series that I had downloaded 2 years ago but since forgot about. The ending theme is pretty bodacious.
I remember watching this series, kind of made me think what gundam would be like if the mobile suits were actually human size. Never finished it though, not sure why.

I've seen both movies as well. The first one never really stuck with me, but the second movie... Everything about it clicked. It maybe a boring watch for most however for me, the most important element was it's soundtrack. I have managed to download it of the net and I'm still not tired of listening to it. It brings fourth an atmosphere that really compliments the mood of the file very well even if most of the tracks are similar. The film is slow-paced but I also find that that is one of it best qualities.

I LOVE the VOTOMs ending theme. So romantic...;_; Also, after you're finished with the TV series, check out Shining Heresy! A friend of my translated it and I timed it! :D

Just watched Dirty Pair: Project Eden. I forgot how much I loved that movie. One of the best anime movies of the late 80's. Even the dub wasn't too bad, handled by Carl Macek and Streamline Pictures. Lots of jokes, lots of action, and a memorable soundtrack. I have an MP3 of Dr. Wattsman's theme on a disc somewhere.

I am currently obsessed with the "To Aru" series, finished watching Railgun and both Index seasons. Crossing my fingers for a third season.
Finished watching Mahou Shoujo Madoka yesterday, simply the best Magical Girl series ever, not your everyday ditzy girl suddenly getting super powers. And Kyuubei is just plain awesome, sure, he's cute, but he's got a sinister personality that gave him depth, unlike the other Magical Girl familiars.
I've been keeping up with Ao no Exorcist [extremely good], Gintama, Deadman Wonderland, and Hidan no Aria.
Whoever haven't seen Ao no Exorcist, do it now~

Just picked up from where I left off in Yu Yu Hakusho. I just finished the Black Card arc and loved the hell outta it, I loved it more than the dark tournament which was cool cause it showed the back stories of Toguro and Genkai but it felt way too dragged out to me. Now i'm on the three kings arc which is starting to seem short as hell, after all it seems like it only goes on from episode 95-112. So the series's finale is the shortest arc in the series? I hope it doesn't let me down :/
