Title: Castlevania is hard!
Post by: Richter on April 29, 2011, 10:31:51 AM
Haha statement of the decade there I'm sure  :P

On a more serious note - do a lot of people just find the challenge of 8-bits something that gets to a point where it all clicks and you can beat it? The classic titles I've managed to beat without any save state emu trickery currently stands at Super Castlevania.. aaand that's it. Couldn't hack the original once I hit Frankenstein, have never finished CVIII and haven't ever managed to get past everything in Rondo of Blood. Dracula X and Bloodlines provided similar experiences... is it just me?

The original Castlevania for the NES was and still is tough to get through, even for me. I can finish it OK but there are still some parts or some bosses that still give me a hard time. Part of the difficulty is that the enemies have no real set functionality. Their programmed movements are somewhat erratic at times and this really forces you to keep on your toes. The Frankenstein monster fight would be easier to beat if not for some tiny mad-hoping hunch-back named Igor  :P

This is what I love AND hate about this game. I'll play through this game a few times a week. I just wanna be able to sit down and go through beginning to end without dying. Best I have done is to get to dracula and kill him with only dying once on the 2nd phase.  Other times I can't even get past the 5th or 6th stage.. it's really bizarre. I use holy water on all the bosses, axe knights and bone pillars. So I'm definitely not "hardcore" ... yet.

but what cracks me up (and by "cracks me up" I mean "throw my wii mote through the F'n window") is sometimes it seems like the game just wants to screw me over... especially on the stage before frankenstien with the harpies dropping fleamen. Most of the time this part is a breeze but every so often it seems like those damn birds are determined to screw me over with a mass dropping of fleas that I cant keep up with..

Just one of many examples of when things go horribly wrong while I'm playing CV1 sometimes LOL

I've never beaten CV3 without using the "HELP ME" cheat. I don't get why CV1 gets all the attention for being difficult; sure, there are some tough moments in that game such as Frankenstein & Death, but CV3 is hard from the get-go & only gets harder. The last two levels are insane.

The only two that find difficult are Simons Quest cause I can never remember where to go next and Dracula's curse because of the dopplegqnger fight. Cv1 I've sort of mastered but that was difficult for a long time, and bloodlines can get a little frustrating on occasion

Totally. I think that's how good games operate - they're like puzzles whose solutions come with practice and realization of the proper function of game mechanics. It's why my two favorite series are Castlevania and Mega Man.

I have finished all CV and i think the more challenging is Bloodlines, even in easy setting (speaking of home console of course).

I've beaten every Vania, playing with the actual cart or disc, sans Haunted Castle, Judgement, Harmony of Despair, and the Wii only title Rebirth. I've even beat Kid Dracula.

Sorry Richter, you apparently just suck. Reflexes son, work on your reflexes. Until then, I suggest changing your name from the famous Belmont known as Richter, to someone more descriptive of your gaming prowess.

vamprie killer, haunted castle, CV III and CV adventure are the most difficult ones I believe.

LOL

you do make a good point; it's all about the reflexes, son

After heavy training, now I can complete Rondo of Blood from beginning to the end - without using continues!  :P
And a lot of other Castlevania games. However, Castlevania I is still a "mission impossible" to me.  ???

Can I play Haunted Castle on an emu? Isn't it an old arcade game, and if so, do I just use mame?

I lack a Wii (wait...that doesn't sound right), so I can't play CVA. I've beaten the original CVA on the GB, so I figure that pretty much covers it. If I ever get a Wii   , I will definitely pick it up though.

Naming yourself after a Belmont you have yet to master is shaming that character....

....alright I'm just kidding. Don't take anything I'm saying seriously Richter.  Except for the reflexes thing. Work on that.  Play as Maria if you want to beat Rondo, she basically puts the game on vadge difficulty.

If you want to go it as Richter, try looking up a FAQ on gamefaqs.com, you should be able to find a FAQ with will list the easiest route (some paths are much more difficult than others). Other than that, memorize patterns, especially for bosses. When a boss is about to do a any particular move, they will do what can be referred to as a tell (like in poker). Each move has it's own tell (usually). Through memorizing these patterns, you learn when to attack and when to GTFO of the way. Sorry if that sounds condescending, I've had friends that have been helped by that advice because they weren't properly reacting to what the boss was doing.

CV1 is probably the most difficult for me, as it's timing can be extremely unforgiving. I've actually beaten the Reaper w/o holy water, but after doing it once I was satisfied.

CV3 is not that hard if you practice the easy route a bit.

Yeah, you can hunt for the MAME rom of Haunted Castle/Akumajo Dorakuya on Emuasylum.

Yeah, CV1 is difficult, but not impossible. I have problems with the Franken/fleaman and Grim Reaper but, if you can survive with the Holy Water and the III symbol, is not that difficult). I remember, one time with Dracula´s second form, I almost beat him with my last health. Then I throw a cross/boomerang to his head and then he hits me and I die. When the cross/boomerang returns, it hits Dracula and he dies too. But the game´s over!!!!!!!!!! >:(.

...and the Wii only title Rebirth.
I though Castlevania Judgment where a CV Game for that console named Wii... Oh, wait... :( Sorry for mentioned.

I know, I just hate when that happens! I die but I also kill the boss as well so I believe I've EARNED the right to see the ending after all the hard work and sacrifice (literally sacrifice).

They should display the ending, but with Simon lying dead on the cliff overlooking the castle. It'd be funnier and a lot more fair.

It would also be the only instance where you get the surprise bad ending cause you were just lucky enough to pull it off by accident.

It'd be like the ending in CV2 where Simon dies.

What VK said about reflexes is true, but it's also true that they're like puzzles. There's a certain way to get past every situation in every one of the old school games whether it's stopping to kill the enemies, walking right past them, etc. Sometimes the best ways are things you find out by accident. But once you know what to do and when to do it, the games become easy almost. That is until you pick them back up after a couple years of not playing them. :P

Amen to that. Drac is stomping my ass the last few days.  I only play CV1 while taking a dump, so maybe that's the problem?

In a single dump? Might wanna nibble on a bran muffin now and then, or eat a tad less red meat.

That's at least a 45-minute dump (give or take a few minutes, as some speedruns have led me to believe).

I'm fairly sure I've gotten to Drac in less than 30 minutes in CV1.  I used to joke that it takes an hour to beat that game: half an hour to get to Drac and half an hour to get lucky enough to kill him before he hits you four times.

Someday, I'll make you see the truth.

Something tells me that you're the guy at work who plays his DS while taking 45 minutes to drop a deuce. And you do it everyday.

SCV IV ending, (great) music, staff roll, stuff.

After the end credits... SECRET ENDING
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Ridureyu/forumstuff/scv4-badend.png)
Simon: "Holy crap, I'm so tired... That was exhausting... And climbing that cliff in the end, ough... I should sleep a bit"

(And then a dark priest violates his mind while sleeping.)

THE END (music, stuff, new game)

As grandpa Trevor used to always say, better your mind than your anus.

(music during CV4 credits is epic btw)
