I know not a lot of people play these games because they weren't released outside of Japan, but they're pretty interesting. They have some of the best music I've heard in games... and some of the most screwed up, disturbing enemy designs I've seen. Really. I got interested in the games because the music was great, but what got me really researching the stories and stuff were some of the freaking weird enemies. I mean... I didn't think they were bad, but they left an odd disquiet in my mind that's hard to explain. I wondered why they kept making freaky enemies. I kind of didn't want them to be that way, but at the same time, it was intriguing as hell.
Here is Wagnas. He, yes he, is one of the one of the Seven Heroes and one of the characters that sticks with me the most. The fight will start around the 30 second mark.

I tried playing one of the Romancing Saga games but it didn't work out too well as the enemies seemed to get stronger as you got stronger. In my mind that says "What the hell is the point of leveling up if they level up with you!?!" But yeah, those bosses look quite...questionable..?

Final Fantasy 8, was the same. Monsters and enemies where level up, along with your characters, but it didn't make it any more difficult.
To the point, i always wanted to try romancing saga games, but i haven't done it yet... :P

Tried Romancing Saga 3, it was good.
Another good game to the Saga series is SaGa Frontier, I played and beat 3 storylines.
But the quests could get repetitive since most characters get the same sidequests. <--- And those were pretty much the only level-uping devices in the game.

Bro, it's SaGa. Unless it's the unlimited kind.
I've never even tried any SaGa (though I do own Unlimited Saga, mainly for the lavish packaging), but I'm pretty glad the series exists. Even just as an outlet for Kenji Ito and Masashi Hamauzu. And I guess for Kawazu to do... whatever he always does. I don't know, it's kind of comforting to know it's (or used to be?) there, alongside Square's bigger, blockbuster projects.

I think what makes these games seem weird to me is that they look like old school Final Fantasy games, but they have perverse enemy designs and stories about noble good people becoming twisted, hate filled creatures. So, there's something a bit off-kilter about this. Whether that's good or bad, I dunno'. It's like a funny smelling Final Fantasy with better music, which is saying something.

I've been wanting to play the Romancing games forever, but the last time I checked only one or two of them had been fan-translated into English.

There's always the PS2 remake of the first game, Minstrel Song, which got an US release. Might be worth looking into.

Fan-translations, some times can be more fun than officials, because they don't have to be limited with the words used in the text, as not to offend people or kids. There are some games that i would like to see a fan translation, as Lady Stalker for the super nintendo, but even today, there is no translation...... :'(
