Title: least favorite character(s)
Post by: crisis on May 17, 2011, 07:49:07 PM
What are your least favorite characters & why ?

I don't like Zobek, because of his boring character design (however his LotD design was ok) and he's a poor substitute for Death (so far)

I also don't care for Claudia, she was very forgettable and another boring-ass design. Even Isaac, hell the entire cast of CoD had more personality than this wench.

Last but not least, Hammer for not having the balls to seal the deal with Yoko. Seriously, man up dude.

Wow, welcome back to early 2000's, when these threads were commonplace.

I'm gonna go with Lydie and Mina here.

Dario and Dmitri from DoS...both are just craptastic. I laughed so hard when Dmitri died and wished they would have made it gorier.

I despise the Igor/Fleaman that absolutely f^cks you over while trying to get Frankenstein's monster in CV1.

Isaac...by far.  There's never been a CV villain that I've been more happy to put in his grave.  He just grated my last damn nerve everytime he spoke.

Second runner up....Ortega.  As much as I loved LoD, I thought that Cornell's rivalry/relationship with this character was just bland and terribly uninteresting.  Plus he looked too much like a villain from a Disney animated film.

Despite what people say, I find Dario a hilarious character.

Gabriel "Belmont"

To be honest I wouldn't even add in the favorite part.

-Claudia. "HURRY WE NEED MORE CRYSTAL SHARDS!" Bitch, just because you have the memory span of a goldfish doesn't mean everyone else does!
-The Titan bosses that were not the Dracolich.
-Er... that shopkeeper from CoD. Julia? She had the worst voice acting ever.
-Aeon (the chef). See Julia.
-Fighting maids/nurses. Because when it's funny the first time it's funny every time, right? Even though there could be legitimate monsters in their place?
-The Mimic in DoS/PoR. Who the hell thought this was a passable sprite? (There are quite a few god awful sprites but this is one of the most offensive ones to me)
-Maxim. What did he do besides get in trouble?
-DXC Maria. See Aeon and Julia. OH GOOOOD MY EARS MAKE IT STOP

That's kind of it. Castlevania's never been a hugely character-heavy game outside of recurring enemies, so...

Hector and Isaac. Too many prettyboys for me. Hector is IGA's poor attempt for a hero who shouldn't have been able to kill Dracula. As for Isaac, I wanted to kill him myself and I seriously doubt he could've sneaked up on, and stabbed Trevor. I mean...It's freak'n Trevor Belmont! no cheesy prettyboy like Isaac can attempt something like that and get away with it. It's just not done. That was a very poor storytelling right there. I also wasn't fond of Juste Belmont either as he came across as an Alucard clone rather then looking like a Belmont.

I can see this. I didn't really hate Hector, but I didn't like him either. He just seems kind of redundant when we already have Alucard, Soma, and Juste already filling the gray-haired effeminate guy category.

And forgot to add Olrox. Not because I dislike him as a character, but because the proper name is Orlock, and it bugs the crap out of me that they never fix it.

Oh come on. He's Sean Connery as voiced by Patrick Stewart. How is that boring?

I find Mina's presence in AoS to work out despite not doing anything. She's there just for the sake of Soma's story.

Lessee. Least favorite...

The 3 Stooges Dark Lord crew from DoS. GOD were they ever shallow... Celia is the biggest offender, with her saturday morning cartoon villain character. She banters, laughs, and teleports. And her two candidates are just goons.

Suffice to say I was happy to see her get killed in DoS.

Isaac. He looks so... well, you see. The only thing I liked with him was the 'UUUAAARGGH' he screams at the beginning of the second battle in Drac's Castle.

Also, I don't know why but I don't like that much Alucard. Too overhype or something like this.

I'll say Graham Jones, because i find him without personality. You simply meet with him 2 times and have some boring dialogues, before you fight him at the throne room. Even chaos sounds more interesting for me.

can't say i have a least favorite.  the more obscure the character is, the more interested i am in details about them.

well, now that i think of it, i didn't really enjoy the surfer dude talk I had to listen to from Abram the healer in Order of Ecclesia and his bossy attitude.  i don't want to know what herbs he was smoking.

I find Mina's presence in AoS to work out despite not doing anything. She's there just for the sake of Soma's story.

She gives Soma information, heals him, works as a confidante and motivator.  My least favorite character is probably... I dunno', probably Jonathan. Damsels in distress are fine with me, but his and Charlotte's unfunny anime hijinks aren't really welcome in this series for me. It's tough, though, because the writing of DoS and PoR just turns my stomach and it's from multiple characters.

-Aeon from Judgement. I don't like his design (black lipstick yuck)
-Charlotte and Johnathan.Dumbest characters in CV.
-The bad guys from the Dos game(can't remember their names right now). They're  as dumb as Charlotte and Johnathan, but they're not the main characters so in a way it's ok for them to be dumb .
-Maria Renard. While she has some pretty cool abilities (especially in the saturn game), she's pretty dumb, or at least that's the feeling I got while reading her dialogs . And her voice, ugh. I know it's not her fault,it's the developers or the ones who translated the game, but I can't help it. I don't like her.
-Shaft. The guy doesn't want to die. You kill him in Rondo(twice) and he comes back as a spirit in SOTN. I was really disappointed by his battle. Plus he looks creepy. Poor Richter must have been traumatized after getting his mind violated by Shaft. No wonder he couldn't use the VK anymore  :D
Title: Re: least favorite character(s)

I agree on Maria.

I always thought she was a bit of a WTF character. Fighting enemies with a 10-year-old girl who lauches dowes in one of the most gothic series? Seriously WTF. Even in SotN, she's pretty useless.
Title: Re: least favorite character(s)
Post by: Odile Kuronuma on May 19, 2011, 03:17:42 PM
Hmm yeah she was pretty useless.
Of course they tried to make her more significant plot-wise by allowing her to give you the goggles item, and making her fall in love with Alucard, but other than that she's not that important. Since you don't fight her in the PSX port, they could have just gave you the item without having to go all down the secret room in the Marble Gallery and talk to her to get it. But i guess they HAD to do it that way .

Maria- She just... ugh... I really don't like her for multiple reasons. First off, having a little kid being playable is fine in a not-so-serious game, but not in a game titled Rondo of BLOOD. >_>  Secondly her powers are completely out of place in a series that tries to call forth a western, gothic feel.  Thirdly... omg, she is so annoying... she's SO. ANNOYING.  Just about the only thing I've liked about her is her Bloody Tears attack in HoD.  And finally... I hate forced romance.  I hate it.  Ick, ick, ick.

Annette/Lydie/Mina/Sara Trantoul- can you guess why? :/  I find Mina to be particularly annoying for some reason.

Vincent Dorin- They should have just killed him and taken all his wares.

Sorrow game villains- All terrible.  Graham had potential but it was completely wasted. The idea of the villains in DoS being a group of cultists also had a lot of potential but they were pathetic and boring... and one thing I never understood is... are they just like a cult of three people? Did I miss something? Wtf? >_>

Wait. Whoa whoa whoa. Wait. Whaaaaaaaat?

But anyway, my least favorite would be, far and away, Isaac. He's so out of place that it isn't even funny. His character design is simply ridiculous. I liked him at first, but dear god, as time went on I grew to not be able to stand him at all. I just can't take him seriously. I think IGA just needed a (very) unlikely character who would sneak-attack Trevor for the thrill of it.

SONIA WAS A HARLOT?!?! :P

Her relations with Alucard happened when they were unmarried. I don't know what that means in Legends' timeframe.

The child was born after Legends. Since Alucard enters into his slumber after Sonia defeats him, if my calculations are correct, Sonia is pregnant throughout the entire course of Legends.

I'll say Graham Jones, because i find him without personality. You simply meet with him 2 times and have some boring dialogues, before you fight him at the throne room. Even chaos sounds more interesting for me.

I think Graham had a lot of potential that wasn't explored. I really was hoping to know more about him. Villians with religious overtones always intrigue me and creep me out, and let's face it, cults are creepy. There could have been a lot more development given his status as a cult leader, and a REALLY interesting backstory (perhaps his conducting mass suicides to raise the castle, telling his followers to kill people and the consequences that follow, etc. - creepy stuff like that.)

(Regarding Graham: Does his name come from the evangelists Billy Graham and Bob Jones, Sr.? I did know about Billy Graham, but Bob Jones was apparently a very effective Southern preacher as well...)

Renewed respect for Sonia Belmont.

I'm a little bit surprised at the dislike toward Isaac. I mean, I totally understand why some people wouldn't like him, and at first, I thought he was too extreme a character, but I grew to like him. He's got his own kind of dementia going on that is intriguing. Also, for what it's worth, his theme is gnarly and he's pretty fun to fight.

Cornell - For one reason, I don't like his main attack. I just can't take it seriously, it's an energy wave ripped right out of DragonBall Z. Other werewolves in the series have shot energy waves, but I think its a stretch taken to give them an exciting attack. IMO they should have given him a spear that could shoot the energy once powered up or something.. and he should be able to do that werewolf ground punch, and have a button to dash.

and Basically any other character that destroys the game with an evil monologue about a master plan at the end.
Title: Re: least favorite character(s)

Cornell's energy wave is like DeeJay's "Max Out" or Jax's EnergyWave.

Johnathan and Charlotte. I don't hate their overall design(though it is a bit generic if you ask me), but their personalities are so paper thin and predictable. Plus what I hate about the two is that throughout the whole game, you learn more about Johnathan than you do for Charlotte other than that she is smart and hates being called a kid. Oh and Johnathan's little "No Problem" catch phrase made me cringe a bit every time he said it....
Edit: Oh and I am adding Dawn of Sorrow Hammer to my little list, mainly cuz' he came off to me as more of a creeper than he ever was in the last game.
Edit 2: And pretty much all of the new characters in DoS

Yeah, I don't feel it strange to have sympathy for the character, to a certain extent... unlike... Shaft, Graham, Elizabeth, Barlow, and so on. That's one of the things that makes him especially unique as a CV villain of that ilk to me. Although, I guess it's possible to feel a bit for Brauner.

Isaac is ineligible to be the least favourite anything just on the strength of his presentation alone. He's really brought to life by vivid facial expressions, as well as excellent body language and voice acting courtesy of Liam O'Brien. Unquestionably one of the best villains in the series. Also someone mentioned Rondo Maria, and to that I say bollocks. Bollocks, now and forever.

Uhhhhhh... everyone from the first two DS games spring to mind. Even if the concepts are salvageable like in, say, Brauner's case, the grim reality is that the inept dialogue and art style ruins any and all specks of mild quality in them. Skip, skip, skip. The cast of Lords is much the same. No one acts like a human being, and there is no logic to anything they do. I've never seen so many words used to convey so little. It's not visually exciting either; half the cast wears the boring Brotherhood get-up.

I have this unquenchable distaste for Joachim. I mean, sure, he's a glorified plot device but... guy's just really hateful to me. I'LL BEAT YOU... TO A PULP. It's bizarre, because he's also voiced by O'Brien. Oh well.

Did it have to do with his badly written dialog? :P

Joachim's cool. If you don't count how much of a pussy he sounded like in his introduction cutscene and how retarded he looked in the next one. He didn't look like he was in pain, he looked like he needed to have a shite. XD But if they actually showed more Joachim, like his past about his rebellion against Walter and all that, and MAYBE didn't kill him off so stupidly... and MAYBE got the idea that Leon could've let him out and together they could take down Walter...

MAYBE Joachim would be cooler. Just sayin'. (:

I think the only character that I really don't care for is young Maria in the original Rondo, not so much in DXC. I just hate that cutesy anime crap they have her doing. I hated it in portrait too but I could overlook it better in that.

She was cuter in DXC anyway. (: Ayami's art is way better than the generic Anime style Rondo had (though not as generic as DoS and PoR). Plus, I actually like the DXC outfit more anyway, though a lot of people seem to not. We need to sic Pedobear on them cuz of their weird obsession with the near-upskirts of Maria they oh so love so much. ^.^

I'm actually happy to see I'm not the only person that preferred DXC's version of Maria (though she is my least favorite character from the Dracula X series).

I'll go by game (for those I care to mention):
Castlevania -Super CV IV: The Bats, Medusa Heads, and Crows. So many pits...so much time being knocked into them... For CV II though, it's the townspeople. Their advice is so useless...
Dracula X/SOTN: Maria. As mentioned before, I just found her to be quite useless as a whole and it seemed like they gave her transparently bad reasons for even being there, let alone being important at all. As for the Rondo version, the anime inspired vibe only made her existence seem worse: she was far too cutsy in appearance, VA, and overall tone. Coupled with her very odd powers of having animals fight for her and it just made her laughably bad. Though the powers seemed a bit better in SOTN, it still seems out of place.
CotM: Hugh. Jealous d-bag.
HoD: Juste. To be honest I'm not sure why but I just didn't like him that much. Maybe because he seemed like Alucard-Lite. His personality was pretty bland as well.
AoS: To be honest, I found everyone but Soma, Alucard, and J. pretty useless. Mina was just a-typical I-am-but-not-really love interest that gave some information (like with Hammer, anyone could have done that), Yoko was just...there and Hammer set up shop but honestly, they could have had anyone do that. And Graham was pretty bland as well.
DoS: See AoS. Unless you count the non-canon ending...then everyone actually had a purpose. But by far, the villains were worse. Maybe the artwork rubbed off on the personalities (anime) because they were like Team Rocket without any of the fun humor: they were just flat out lame and very shallow characters with very cliche` personalities for their roles.
PoR: Charlotte and Johnathan 'No Problem' Morris. They're just very bad anime cliche` characters, from design to personalities, to actions. Even the final battle after they beat Dracula and Death...I just wanted to punch Charlotte for her stupid 'team work' banter she gave them.
LoI: I don't really dislike anyone so much as I dislike the melodramatic fashion every acted in. I laughs far too much than I should have. XD
CoD: St. Germain (SP?) because he was just very out of place, even as a time traveler it just felt odd for him to be there. Issac just made me...uncomfortable after a while. Like he was FAR more into to Hector than he let on---but on a far darker, creepier level. Plus when he stabbed Trevor...seriously, Issac is just unsettling. LOL But I don't hate him...I'm just O_o about him.
Judgement: Aeon. He seemed like more of a reason to excuse St. Germain's existence more than anything else. (The whole time traveler's/watchers of time/whatever thing) His design doesn't bother me (even if he did look like L's older brother from Death Note) too much until we got to the black lipstick. Didn't really understand that one. LOL.
LoS: Gabe, mainly because of who he's actually suppose to be.  I like my Dark Lords evil, sitting on thrones, and tosses glasses of blood while screaming "Have at you!". Though I wasn't a big fan of too many of the characters in this game. (...or the story for that matter...)

I like a lot of your points. I'll post mine like that, since all I had to say was "Dmitrii".

CV (and all of its remakes)+CV2: I'd have to say the same about this one. Except for the villager part. It wasn't the villager think that aggravated me. It was how half-assed the bosses were in CV2. Three severely limited bosses. -_-
Dracula X Chronicles: Overall? I'd have to say Shaft. He was pretty bland and only thought of "Master this" and "Master that". And then said things that didn't make sense like, "Belmont? How can you be here? Blast it. Very well!" And then teleported. When of course, later he decides to take you on. I don't see why he didn't just do it there. Of course, Dracula decided to completely leave out the fact that the Succubus's opponent happened to be his own son. >.>
Circle of the Moon: Morris. He was utterly useless.
Harmony of Dissonance: Maxim. He was fail all the way, and kind of a jealous d-bag just like Hugh.
Aria of Sorrow: Yoko. As cool as she was, she was useless.
Dawn of Sorrow: Hammer. Hammer shouldn't be some guy with a puppy love crush for Yoko. He was a badass in AoS. Come on, what is this?
Portrait of Ruin: It was Vincent. All he did the entire game was complain.
Lament of Innocence: I think Rinaldo. "You're going in there to destroy the Vampire that locked me away in darkness, and avenge my daughter. Doesn't matter, the potions are still 500 gold." Seriously? What a jerk.
Curse of Darkness: Hector. He was dense, made stupid comments, jumped to so many conclusions, etc. And he had a fat face. "So... those two are enemies..." Astounding observation from Hector.
Judgment: Maria. Come on. Maria is one of my favorite characters in the series and you had to go and ruin her and turn the entire game into some stupid anime fighter because all she cared about were boob sizes. >.>
Lords of Shadow: Haven't played the game yet (played demo though), but I'd have to say the talking unicorn from stage 2. That just threw me off.

The only character in the entire franchise who really, really got on my nerves was Claudia. From her Final Fantasy-esque relationship to the black knight, to the weird way she'd gesture as if she were actually talking, and the constant badgering about crystal shards.

Don't forget her footballer armx20. Did you see how high she threw that crystal thing? D:

Did it have to do with his badly written dialog? :P

Joachim's cool. If you don't count how much of a pussy he sounded like in his introduction cutscene and how retarded he looked in the next one. He didn't look like he was in pain, he looked like he needed to have a shite. XD But if they actually showed more Joachim, like his past about his rebellion against Walter and all that, and MAYBE didn't kill him off so stupidly... and MAYBE got the idea that Leon could've let him out and together they could take down Walter...

MAYBE Joachim would be cooler. Just sayin'. (:

I am not the only one that think a Joachim / Leon tagteam would be awesome.
Joachim is actually quite a badass character, IMO. Having telepathy and floating and all.
Having Joachim shoot out that energy beam at enemies always made me smile.

And copying Kamirine's example:
Castlevania I ~ III: Medusa heads, just plain hate them! No matter how many time I kill them, they just keep on spawning. And stop pushing me off the ledge!
Castlevania Rondo of Blood: None so far, since I haven't beat it yet.
Castlevania Lament of Innocence: Rinaldo for not having his shop inside the castle. Seriously, it's a pain always needing to leave the castle just for additional potions. <- I'm lazy that way.
Castlevania Curse of Darkness: St. Germain for being a pain in the neck to fight, and I thought Rondo of Blood bosses were a pain. You're not Dracula, so don't go regaining HP on me!
Castlevania Aria of Sorrow: Haven't beat it yet, so can't say.
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow: I am okay with the cast here.
Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance: I am okay with the cast here. I would say the merchant though, but I stopped visiting him after my required scenes with him.
Castlevania Dracula x Chronicles: Haven't beat it yet, so can't say.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night: Shaft, for what he did to Richter.

and last but not least, Gabriel Belmont, for practically replacing Leon in the canon.

Joachim has cool attacks, a kinda' interesting back story, and his boss fight is sort of clever. I don't mind the character, but I gotta' admit, the "I'll beat you to a pulp" line is quite awkward : o

A man after my own mind.

I neglected to mention the Magical Nitro in CV64. I know, it's not technically a character, but the level of bullshit and its retarded placement gave it a kind of sadistic nature, like Medusa Heads and Crows. You can almost feel it laughing at you when you get just a little too eager around those giant cogs. GRRRRRR

Yeah, when he said that to Leon, I was like "That line is so last decade, bro. Now a days it's 'I'll beat the crap outta you'."

The DoS villains. I guess it's been voiced many times already, but they were just too juvenile for me. On the other hand, I imagine the younger audience the game was geared towards wouldn't have much of a problem with them.

I wasn't a fan of the YOOOOOOOOO THERE YOU ARE guy from OoE. I think his name was Abram. His dialog was completely grating.

Really, I wonder if Richter had a bunch of kids out of an extramarital affair, and abandonded them in Wygol Village because he was ashamed of how dumb they were.

I hated pretty much all those villagers. That chef does not deserve to be related to the Belmonts. At all.

I completely forgot that they were all related to the Belmonts. The villagers were pretty forgettable for me, so I won't say I hated them. I'm indifferent more than anything.

Cooking is about heart (just kidding!). Humming a Gradius song. Monster photojournalism. Tom the Cat.

That was the best village and you know it.
