This topic awakened my interest today. Obviously, when we played the old classic, early nineties video-games as kids we didn't pay attention to this. But now that I look back, on the art in those older games...
This was when I was thinking through of the 80's action movie heroes, that effected a lot the way late (NES and early PC) 80's-early nineties action characters looked like. The whole Arnold Schwarzenegger, Silvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren kind of look: Buff men, big guns, emotionless, cigarette-smoking... Smoking?
I could have sworn I saw a least some art of some games showing...

That's not a lollipop the NES Contra protagonist has got in his mouth.
I could have sworn I've seen a scene in Duke Nukem 3D showing Duke smoking as well. I couldn't find a screenshot of it though, so I'm probably wrong.
So how many are they? Do you guys know of any smoking characters? I would like to know I'm not just making stuff up.

You have Solid Snake, the greatest smoker who ever lived. Too bad the games punish you for using cigarettes...

I remember an arcade game where you played as The Punisher and Nick Fury (Was 2 player co-op). The whole game Nick Fury had a cigar in his mouth, all the while running, shooting, jumping and rolling. He just smoked that thing endlessly, and it never ran out.

In the Commandos strategy/action series you can lure out a German soldier by throwing a pack of smokes at him. If he sees the box, he immediately leaves his guard and rushes to pick it up, and then smokes it on the spot (what gives you time to get to a certain spot unnoticed).
Anyway, it seems like in many WW2 games the Nazis are pictured as total smoking-addicts.

All soldiers are depicted as smoking addicts. ITS THE 1950S & 60S.

You mean 40's. >_>

Chris Redfield from Resident Evil( the scene was cut in the US version) lights up during the intro and his ending. Also, Guile from Street Fighter smokes. There is a rarely seen artwork that was in Eternal Challenge and the SF Anniversary guide book. The pic of Guile you can see a pack in his hand and a cigarette in his mouth.

Actually the bottle is the same in the Japanese release too.

Fargo from Chrono Cross also smokes... but then, he's a pirate thief so it's kinda expected. He smokes big cigars in battle and out of battle (it's his 'stand while doing nothing' pose).

Also, I think there are a couple of smoking protagonists in the Super Robot Wars series of games. I'd have to check, though, they may be *antagonists* rather than heroes...

Manny Cavalera smoked in Grim Fandango. Typical, as it's set in a 40s style era.
