Title: Is castlevania judgment actually a fun game?
Post by: kompwars on May 26, 2011, 12:54:53 AM
so my birthday is like..tomorrow, and my dad is gonna buy me a hell load of games for me :) I was always wondering if i should get judgement, but ive seen really negative reviews for it. Is it actually worth a try? My friend told me he borrowed it from a friend and it was pretty good, but he siad there wen't that many characters, and some of the characters look rly weird :/

It depends.  Some people find it to be a fun little scoop of Castlevania, others absolutely abhor every inch of it.  Just don't go in expecting something as polished as Soul Calibre. If you have a chance to try it before purchasing...do so.  If not, I'd recommend trying to find it used at retail outlets or online.  It can be had at fairly low cost these days.

its an odd thing.  if you're a fighter fan, then you'd probably play a real fighter.  if your a Castlevania fan, you'd probably rather play a real Castlevania game.  if you're both, well, might as well give it a try.  since i imagine its gotta be cheap now, there should be no harm in picking it up.  i pull it out just to see what they did with all the character interactions and am interested in how they turn classic characters into fighters.  but i don't play it very often just for the fun of it.

I think it's a fun game, not the best fighting game, but enjoyable. If you're a huge CV fan then I say give it a shot, especially if you get it cheap

If you like the Power Stone (for Dreamcast) or are into fighters like Super Smash Bros. you might like it quite a lot more than if you're into strict fighters like Street Fighter, etc.

It's a fun diversion. :)

That's about right. I picked it up for about $15 new in a bargain bin. It's fun, though only in small doses, and it takes some time to get used to the controls. If you're familiar with Castlevania history, it can be extra amusing. It has some good atmosphere and a lot of classic touches like music.

^ $15.00? I should have waited.
Anyway. I find it quite entertaining.
It's like playing Soul Calibur with 3D controls.
The soundtrack has to be one of the best in Castlevania history. [<--- IMO]

So, my verdict:
Do it .

I think you'd do better to watch the stories on youtube, and get the soundtrack instead.
The character redesigns are pretty damn off-putting if you're a fan. Down right hideous.
It's not much of a fighting game, and much less of a castlevania game.
The soundtrack should have been put to better use in a real CV game.

Soundtrack is cool as they took (some of) the best tracks from all CV's and arranged them. Pretty cool sound. It's in the same mood than HoD (while HoD is a little more metal/heavier than Judgment)

If your father/you can find Judgment at a low price ($15 seems to be good), take it. You'll enjoy it, even if you hate the character design and other things. It is fun to play, even more when you have a friend, abrother or a sister who can play with you.

Despite being a complete cheapo off brand fighter, it has a pretty solid combo system. The game is not balanced by any means though. It was kind of fun, even though I'm one of those hardcore 2D fighting fans, I still had some fun with it.

Some of the stories give an interesting insight to some of the characters too, as well as hints to what they've been doing in the time they aren't fighting Dracula. And some others are completely.... weird.

I liked it, it was fun, unless you play brutal where it is just...brutal, Some designs are awful(Death), some are better than the original(Cornell) and others depend of your opinion. I say that if it is cheap you should get it

I had a decent amount of fun with it. The big thrill for me was playing a fighting game with Castlevania characters to the sounds of Castlevania music....and what great music it is.

Maria's fixation on boobs is disturbing/hot.

Maria's fixation on boobs is disturbing/hot.

If there's one thing about that game that I won't forget...it'd be Maria, and Sypha's "sacred gifts." Seriously, where on earth did they get that?

To the OP:

Judgement is not too bad for what it is, but you can tell it leaves much to be desired. I'm a huge Street Fighter fan but I also enjoy titles with slightly more leeway, like Soul Calibur. I haven't touched it in forever, but when I'm bored I pick it up just for some mindless fun. I play it with a gamecube controller so controls are pretty easy there. It is a fun little game, not without flaws, but still entertaining. My main gripe is with the character designs. The Judgment versions of the characters look radically different from the originals, which is a little jarring for people who are used to the more established appearances, and also for new players who want to play other Castlevanias as well.

If you can look past the goofy stuff, though - yes, it is a fun game. I personally play it to wind down from some more challenging fighters. I'd recommend it, at least to see what it's like. You may end up really enjoying it or you may end up hating it. There's only one way to know for sure.

Probably a little late for me to comment, but yeah, it's quite a bit of fun. Although the character design is pretty out there, a few of them were cool, and after the initial shock of it wears off, it's not an issue (kind of like how Wind Waker's graphics grow on you if you don't like them at first). Most of the stages themselves were pretty cool, too.

But this is also coming from a very casual fan of fighting games. (I'll play fighting games in single player mode just to view all the endings, unlock everything, etc., then I'm done. I cheese lots of moves that work well. I may go back to this game, but destroying CPU players with Cornell kind of lost its charm after a while.) And I'm sure a die-hard fighting game enthusiast would most likely be less impressed with this than I was. And I kind of wish the super moves were shorter.

i just set up the wii out in the garage so i'll have plenty of space to move around in.  maybe i'll start playing Judgment more often now.  i do enjoy "acting out" the motions when using the wii remote.  get a workout that way.
