Title: Remix Battle II! Vampire Killer
Post by: 赤月 on May 30, 2011, 09:12:53 PM
It's stage two of the remix battle!!
Vampire Killer. The very first track any oldschool Castlevania players heard when they first ventured into Castlevania in 1986.
Since then, the track has been remastered, remixed, and arranged numerous times for future games, making this song timeless.
Now the question is, which game does Vampire Killer the best?

Castlevania Music: VAMPIRE KILLER COLLECTION (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMcyE5oipUU#)
Castlevania Music: VAMPIRE KILLER COLLECTION (Part 2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJs8iEq8lmc#)

Quote from: Akatsuki
My personal favourites are remixed in Dracula X Chronicles, Judgement, and Harmony of Despair.
Just love the powerful orchestra playing the track on Dracula X Chronicles.
Judgement's electronic influenced arrangement of the track is very well done. One of my favourite tracks in Judgement.
Harmony of Despair's modern rock with obviously 8-Bit sounds makes for an unusual, but unique mix.

I voted Castlevania Chronicles version of Vampire Killer. There's just something about that particular arrangement which jives with me.

That arrangement is quite a chaotic touch to it.
If Harmony of Despair did not remix the track, Chronicles would of made it to my list.
But yes, Chronicle's version is great to jam to.

I find it rather unacceptable that we STILL haven't seen a rendition of VK appear in a 3D Vania as of yet. (No...Judgment doesn't count)

I put in a vote for CV3. I like how it captures the magic of the original perfectly (by being so similar), while also tightening and improving it a bit. There's DPCM in the percussion unlike CV1, and it's a bit more nuanced overall:

CV3: Deja Vu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-RdjNFCYs8#)

I think this would be a good candidate for the 'other' option. Wai Wai World 2 has a fairly 'progg'ed out' rearrangement with interesting time signatures (it's the second song in the second video from the OP):

That post made me laugh.
But yes, Lament of Innocence would of been the perfect 3D Castlevania to have a VK remix thrown in there for one of the stages.

Say what now? (http://tinyurl.com/3fkgwk4)

Anyways, the best VK remake is undoubtedly the arcade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fott4XKa1A#) version. Sick stuff, especially when it gets all old and scratchy for a moment. CotM's rendition is a close runner up, and gee, that's not even an option here either.

It has a VK quote in "Admiration Towards the Clan" (near 1:30)

Also, best version is the Arcade version. HoD and Judgment are great too.

Oh yes, it was short and pretty. If only they made a full 4:00 VK rendition for Lament of Innocence, then I'll be one of the happiest people ever.

I did read it. But I just doubt at what renonsgoods said. Because I've heard that there was a VK track playing in one of the stage in LoS.

He's simply asking for clarification on the exact thing you are talking about. If you would like to respond maturely, there's no need to be condescending about it.

To answer his question, it did appear in LoS.
http://youtu.be/W0D2HgBjXiM (http://youtu.be/W0D2HgBjXiM) (the song)
http://youtu.be/00uPEuNXT-o (http://youtu.be/00uPEuNXT-o) (gameplay context)

Because its inclusion is more of an easter egg than anything else, you can see why it may be disregarded by some. It's there, but as a special 'music box' arrangement and not normal/ regular in-game music.

In all honesty, I like CotM's the best. Not sure why...it sounds kind of happy and peppy...but it's my favorite.

I think the SCIV version sticks in my head the most. Like Rondo's version, too. I checked out that YouTube compilation (the first one), and I'm kind of ashamed that I don't even remember the sound of the remix in the X68000 game, especially since it's so good.

I've been growing more fond of CotM's version as well.
I think it's because of the different pace and key.  CV4 has it in a different key as well but the instrumentation is a tad odd.

Having organs do the melody at the start of the song suits the song.

@Corneliab:
Yeah, I'm not fond of your irritating responses with inflammatory language, Corneliab, and I've warned you about it before.
It seems you still can't get through your head that in this forum we will have civilized people language, and I won't tolerate peppering your language with insults to sound bigger.

One more time I see this from you and you're getting banned.  You've been warned.

@Everyone else:
However, I think you guys missed the link that he put as "Say what now", which caused the confusion.
I will fix the forum's link colors so that links are easier to see.

Chronicles - Fujimori is in a league of his own.

Rondo of Blood - Rondo's early '90s pop excess is so good, man. The galloping bass is supreme, and the Stalker bit is how you pay homage to something without being overbearing about it.

Dracula's Curse - Bubbly percussion! It's preferable to the Densetsu version, as well.

Harmony of Dissonance - I love Harmony's sharp instrumentation, and a medley together with Clockwork just, uh, works.

I found Rondo's version to be a little strange. The song pauses around the climax of the tune for a second before it starts up again. For me, this ruined to tune. At least in the SNES version (CV: Dracula X) they fixed it and it sounds much better. I hate it when the put pause gaps in tunes, it just brakes the rhythm.

I felt the same, it stopped when it was getting good.

PS: Am I the only one liking Harmony of Despair's Vampire Killer?

A half-second of silence somehow diminishes the enjoyability of a song? Hum.

I forgot to mention another cool thing about it, though: you can hear bird noises during the intro, solidly tying it into the stage where it's used. Only Rondo and Symphony really do this kind of worldbuilding through their music.

I liked Harmony of Despair's version, especially that boss drum riff at the beginning. Forgot to vote for it though. >.< I just wish it had Rondo/DXC's extra part towards the end. The song was too short for the stage it was put in.

I voted for the SOTN remix, the first moment I heard that song back during the Saturn days, I trembled. It is the first time in my early years to hear such a shocking remix for a song I loved since I played CV1 during first grade.

IDK, I only liked VK and Alucard's Theme, Bloody tears lost all its classy-feeling, Dance of Illusions was a mess, Beginning was kinda meh, some others were really good but nothing excellent... VK was indeed the best of the bunch, a version like no other before it :)

Okay you just made me remember Beginning. That one was terrible. DXC's Dreams of Triumph was WAY better. And honestly, I loved how heroic Bloody Tears sounded. Dance of Illusions was truly a Dracula-battle theme in this game. Castle Dracula was pretty epic. And there's no way you can hate Darkness of Fear, is there?

Sweet, I don't feel so alone anymore.
DXC's Vampire Killer is sweet, though, it's very powerful and it sets the stage for the entrance level.
I do agree that Harmony of Despair should of extended the track. Chapter 10 is massive!

Yeah, I really couldn't explain the mechanics behind the sounds on that game.
I've played many DOS games growing up and all the music were high quality and sound FX did not interrupt the BGM.

With Chronicles a close second because techno killer just sounds pretty boss to me.

Dawn's version grated on my ears from the first moment I heard it. I just dont like it at all. It sounds almost exactly like the CotM version. (which isnt so hot itself IMO, but had GBA limitations so its ok)
