Title: (Request) The best NES Soundfont Castlevania remixes available
Post by: Neflyte on June 03, 2011, 10:38:57 AM
Hi, I'm looking for any Castlevania tunes from the 16-bit games upward that are made using the NES soundfont. I know there's quite a few out there, but so far I've been unable to find any that don't sound ultra high-pitched and resemble the Sega Master System/Game Gear moreso than the NES. VRC6 and VRC7 style would definitely be awesome, but as long as they're well done that's what matters. So if anyone can link or post some, I would very much appreciate it! :D :D :D

You can get midis for the songs and upload them into a program called GXSCC. It'll turn them into an NES/GG/whatever style song. It only saves as wav files though.

I'll take the case! **goes into Recording Mode**
Anything in particular? I'll start with CV4. ;)

Only if you want it to be very inaccurate sounding. It uses way too many channels, and that ruins the feel.

What UZO says is true in that it would end up using a lot of channels. My renditions will do that as well, but they won't use GX-SCC. I can pretend they use VRC6 though to get away with it.
The problem with GX-SCC is that the waveforms it uses are more like MSX and Commodore, than they are NES. NES used better sound altogether (and with VRC6 and 7 it was just superior in every sense of the word). Telling GX-SCC to just use "Famicom Sounds" doesn't help, as all it does is use "Square Wave" for everything.
It's a neat tool but it's not perfect. Too bad, too... since I was hoping the creator would update it. It's still nice to hear, though.

Well, I did have a hacked version my friend made for me, so I guess my point is totally moot. :\

What did the hack do?
Title: Re: (Request) The best NES Soundfont Castlevania remixes available

It made it more accurate to the original. The thing's a major *expletive* to use now, though, cuz it's no longer a simple drag and drop. He added all these knobs and stuff so you can adjust it.
Thing is though, it's still in testing, as it still has problems. I'm one of his testers. So distributing it at this time is a no-go. I'd love to let you look at it, but well... He's a friend and I promised to keep it to myself.

It's no problem. I've got my own ways of downmixing stuff to NES-VRC6 mode.
Title: Re: (Request) The best NES Soundfont Castlevania remixes available
Post by: Claimh Solais on June 03, 2011, 11:31:17 AM
I trust its easier than using knobs and all this other weird stuff?
On an ontopic note: There are a few NES-style remakes of the later series tracks, but of course I can't find any non-GXSCC versions. If I find any I'll let you know.

Now now, I do use programs, y'know... Anyway, here's some results. This will be my Soundcloud Downmixing Project (revived?). Note: I did NOT cut down on the number of channels. This just showcases what's possible. I'd have to use up a lot more time arranging the tunes so that they only use three channels... though with VRC6, you technically have access to far more than just three pulses, a noise, and a DPCM. So these are souped up-sounding NES-'style' tunes.
Nice stuff indeed! Definitely without that high-pitched sound that I've found all over the place! Now as for requests, I have 4 in particular:
SCV4 - Mechanical Trick Tower SotN - Tragic Prince, Pitiful Scion(whatever you call it, it's one of my favorites) SotN - Wandering Ghosts AoS - Clock Tower

SCV4 - Clockwork Mansion ... which part? The 1st or the 2nd? I've made the 1st but not the 2nd part. I have no SotN pieces so I'd have to rely on downloads, so that might be hit-or-miss. AoS's Clock Tower is damn awesome, and I'll upload it later.

Damn, Jorge! That's awesome!! Just the sort of stuff I'll need for my game. It would be a lot more than a handfull of tracks though. At this point it's more like 15+ songs in VRC6 style. The plus is because I'm thinking of implementing a sound assign mode. It would give me more stuff to put in chests and I'm sure people would appreciate it.

Wow, my list is really long. I had never actually written out exactly what my game would need until now. Here goes...
Castlevania/Vampire Killer (Amiga version has some minor arrangement stuff that would be a good alternative): Introduction Name Entry Vampire Killer Stalker Wicked Child Walking on the Edge Heart of Fire Out of Time Nothing to Lose (preferably an extended remix, CVHD version is pretty good) Black Night (preferably an extended remix) Stage Clear Game Clear Voyager Player Miss Game Over
Haunted Castle: No Return (Map) Basement Melody Clock Tower Beat Don't Wait Until Night Dracula's Room Devil's Resurrection Final Battle Sent to the Devil's Requiem
Super Castlevania IV: Demon Castle Dracula (Title) Dracula's Theme Theme of Simon In the Castle Entrance Hall + Chandeliers (merged into one song) Pillared Corridor (Already done! Huzzah!!) Cellar Treasury Room Map B (from castle interior) Map D (from Vampire Killer stage) Boss 2 (from castle battles) Room of Close Associates Dracula Battle Ending Theme Secret Room Password Konami Logo
Akuma-jou Dracula X6800: Something Loopy (might make a good arrangement if mixed with "Name Entry") Creatures in the Depth You Goddamned Bathead Load BGM (to be used in the credits, Mother Earth sounds more like a stage theme to me)
And for future consideration as part of the sound assign: Thrashard in the Cave (CVX68K, Roland SC-55 version) The Tower of Gears (CVX68K, Roland SC-55 version) Moon Fight (CVX68K, Roland SC-55 version) The Tower of Dolls (CVX68K, Roland SC-55 version) Etude for the Killer (CVX68K, Roland SC-55 version) Mother Earth (CVX68K, Roland SC-55 version) Black Mass (CVX68K, Roland SC-55 version) Forest of Monsters (SCV4) The Cave (SCV4) The Waterfalls (SCV4) The Submerged City (SCV4) Clockwork Mansion Pt1&2 (SCV4) Bloody Tears (SCV4) Beginning (SCV4)
Told you it was a huge list! :P

Why do you need downmixes of tunes that are already in NES form?
Title: Re: (Request) The best NES Soundfont Castlevania remixes available

Consistency. I want all the tracks to sound like they are on the same sound engine. I hate inconsistency in fan works. If I use the nsfs of CV1 they'll sound different from your downmixes. Sometimes I wish I could just do it all myself in FamiTracker, but I haven't been able to make heads or tales of it.

Inccubus: Ok, I was just wondering. I have done some CV1 stuff, and the NEStification of it is indeed different than the original, except for Vampire Killer. My Vampire Killer sounds almost 'exactly' like the NES version. However, I can give you other Vampire Killer versions which would sound different.

Amazing piece, right there. I always loved AoS's clock tower theme.
And about Vampire Killer, the Judgment version would still be really cool to hear NES-style.

Sounds like a good deal, dude! Your downmixes match my NE/SX methodology perfectly too since they sound better than the original but are still distinctively "8-bit". Clock Tower sounds awesome! That's one of my favorite tracks from AoS. ^__^

Jorge, if you were to 8-bit-ify the Judgement OST some day, I would have NO CHOICE but to make a game to go along with it!

That would take an extreme amount of skill! I don't think I can commit to NEStificating Judgment's music. Hell, I still have problems with Rondo of Blood and can 'barely' do the simpler Symphony of the Night tunes.

Never said do it. I understand how long that would take, considering how indepth the game's music is. Just pointing out how interesting it would be to hear. (:
I did, however, hear a piano arrangement of it and it was amazing.

I'd like to hear the nes-ified Vampire Killer you have before asking you to do anything new. The less work you have to do the better & faster things can get done. That's why I'm using exclusively recycled and edited tiles for my game. I could take months of extra work to scratch everything.

Post by: Inccubus on June 03, 2011, 09:45:12 PM
Indeed! It sounds very different! I like it! Here, just compare it! It's close but different, the only thing I'd do IF you wanted to sound even more like the original hardware is boost up the volume on the Triangle wave and noise channels. But even with that it still has a distinct sound of it's own that I'm just loving!

Nah, I don't want to sound like the original hardware, not exactly. I want to sound different, or sound as if I had multiple 'hardware' to work with.
I don't want to limit myself, but I enjoy the retro sound.
That's why I put a disclaimer at the very beginning; because the last thing I intend is to sound 'exactly accurate' to the old stuff. For that, I'd use MML or Famitracker or something.

A Pox, I say, as well! Also, here's "In the Castle". I did not compose the file, I just took someone else's file (they didn't have a credit name though :\ ) and worked my magic on it.
The song has one 'beat' of silence at the beginning, and the loop points are: Start: 150,341 End: 3,517,977 (in samples)
If you use those numbers you should get a perfect seamless loop. Try it out! Incoming Mediafire Link: ***CLICKY*** (http://www.mediafire.com/?9mjpyitat1wer)
I didn't put it up on Soundcloud because, since the song doesn't loop, it's only one loop and a few beats in length, to maximize space.
EDIT: Here's my Vampire Killer, in a short version, and here are the loop points: Start: 41,669 End: 1,375,086 (the end of the samples) ***CLICKY*** (http://www.mediafire.com/?9mjpyitat1wer)

Awesome thread! I should've taken closer look at the fan forum sooner. This inspired me to finish an arrangement that was half-done for the longest time. It's a cover of a Legends track using the VRC6 expansion and DMC samples from Akumajou Densetsu.

Oh sure, Subterranean Hell from DoS! If it's not too much of a hassle, that would be awesome. I couldn't find anything for it. I also just realized you transcribed the midi that helped me with my last arrangement... thanks so much! :D
I did another track... but it's much simpler, not very exciting. More of a test than anything else. It's "Castle", the password music from Belmonts Revenge. This time it uses the extra FDS channel, which Dracula II (CV2J) used. The goal was to have it a bit more organic sounding than its usage in Dracula 2, but I didn't do anything fancy with it. I just made a second triangle so it could phase.

I can provide you with sheet music OR a MIDI of Subterranean Hell, no problem. Check your inbox in a while.

Hi Jorge. Your remixes are excellent. I was wondering if you could also provide me a midi of Subterranean Hell (or preferably the arranged version of this song called "Amber Scenery")?
A midi of the song "Purple Eyes" from Harmony of Despair would also be great!
