Title: Someone's trying to hack Castlevania Homebrew Images :(
Post by: efin on June 30, 2011, 08:27:23 AM
Hey guys, it's been a long time!

Anyway, it's probably more like they actually succeeded and I just don't know it yet. So back in March, I found that someone had uploaded a file uploader php file but changed the extension to jpg. I didn't think much of it since I didn't find anything else that had been uploaded, though I didn't check too much in other directories. Fast forward to now, and someone uploaded two more php fake images on the 26th. These are far more devious, including the c99shell script.

I'm thinking it may be time to take down the upload portion of the site.  :(  People are so selfish and crappy these days.

I dunno, what do you guys think?

Try taking down the .jpg format, if possible? I dunno.
I was planning on uploading some of my complete sheets there (when they're complete).

But I'll agree with the "selfish and crappy" part. Taking down the upload portion might be a good idea.

(SIDE NOTE: Are you the same efin who made the badass Cordova Town midi? Cuz... that was awesome.)

Yeah, that was me.  :)  Thanks!

As for the .jpg part, one was .gif also. I think they're just using any image format to get them up on the site, then opening (or trying to open) them as php files. I'm not sure how possible that is, but people can be pretty crafty sometimes. lol

The good thing is that I have nothing of value to anyone on the site, and nothing has been defaced. I dunno... maybe the hosting site actually has good protection against this sort of thing. It's been around for years, so there are ways.

Well, I better grab any sheet on there worth saving in the case something does actually happen. Wouldn't want to miss out on tons of pieced together enemy sheets. ^.^

Well, both .jpg and .gif can be bad for sheets. .jpg, as everyone knows, compresses the image, and makes any kind of sprite unusable. .gif can sometimes cause color dithering. Is it possible to limit it only to .png uploads? (.bmp is known to eat up bandwidth like a bawss, so...)

Dont know how homebrew works, but take it down and replace it with malicious code. If they want to play rough, you play rough back.
