Title: Monster origins...
Post by: Kale on July 17, 2011, 11:36:06 PM
Is there any wiki or whatnot that tells you the origins of the monsters? I know castlevania wikia has one or two... but I'd like to find some other origins of the monsters if there are ones that aren't only from castlevania.

Like Alura Une/Veuns Weed... anyone know it's origins? Doesn't say in CV, but somehow it doesn't seem to be a castlevania original.

If there's a certain monster or monsters that you wish to look up then do a basic search and you should get the results you're looking for. If you are inquiring about a specific site then I'll have to do some digging around.

As far as I can tell, there isn't really a detailled wiki documenting Castlevania monsters for good, but you can find most references pretty easily. Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alraune), this explains where Aluraune comes from. Next!

and this would explain why... I forget that ru/lu can be construed as r/l or vice versa.

It does have origins, but it sounds like they're origins that CV more or less came up. Thanks anyway.

No, somewhere it that site there is a encyclopedia of sprts that lists the myths and legends of the monsters, maybe it is in the Library section

Haha, silly Dungeonite newbies. - http://castlevaniadungeon.net/history/monstermyth.html (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/history/monstermyth.html)

Goes to show this site really hasn't updated enough when even people who've been here a little while forget how much stuff and info this site actually has and that it's not just the forums.

Alraune is off though, wiki mentions it being a germanic legend.

And man, i haven't visited the normal site in like... ever....... but I remember why, it hasn't been updated since EVAR!

You gotta admit there hasn't been much reason to update LoS.
Now Mr.P's monster encyclopedia, that needs some updates badly. Half the stuff in there is just plain made up.

True enough, but none of the newer contents seems to be added either. So meh...

The Dungeon's info isn't "off," it just doesn't note the legend that inspired the story of Alraune.

Never read the story myself but that story does not even seem to remotely resemble alraune from the legend or this game.

Well, a mandragora is a plant/root, as is Alura Une/Venus Weed. The Wikipedia "Legend" says a mandrake's fruit would be used to facilitate pregnancy, since the humanoid-shaped mandrake root is said to be the result of a hanged man ejaculating into the ground (a fun bit of info I first learned from the exceptional movie Flesh+Blood); also mentions witches "making love" to the root, producing offspring which have no feelings of real love. The Alraune story is similar, a girl born of artificial insemination. Suffers from "obsessive sexuality and perverse relationships." Alura Une is nude, and always had a very saucy "sex" appearance and allure (hence "Alura," I've always thought), but doesn't seem to harbor actual love. I don't think it's all that difficult to draw the comparisons, really.

but doesn't seem to harbor actual love.

In other words 'base instinct' rather then 'deep emotion'.

Alura Une origins (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,3844.0.html)
Succubus origins (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,3894.0.html)

I possess an encyclopedic knowledge of Castlevania monsters.
