Post by: KaZudra on July 27, 2011, 01:26:02 AM
this is the 10th anniversary of PSO, as Sonic Team provides Sonic Generations for Sonic's 25th, PSO fans get Phantasy Star Online 2 for PC, what does that mean?

I agree, not credited, but PSO was the first Multi-Platform MMORPG, and still a behemoth since the fans alone keep servers alive.

Wasn't too crazy about PSU or PSP, but PSP2 was awesome and PSZ was too,
I'm very happy to see more PSO, I too am a HUGE fan.
maybe when the game's out we'll party up

I never got into the PSO thing. Back when PSO was announced, after being used to the other traditional RPG PS games, killing off that main series for an MMORPG series didn't feel right. It might've been better, profit-wise, but I really would've loved to see the main PS series continue with PS5 and onwards. Though, besides that, never cared for the look, design-wise, of PSO. It's like if the PS universe was washed through a Space Channel 5 filter(lots of plastic suits, matrix grids, and complex seam design). Though, I've never been one who liked dramatic change in a game's world. I mean, it's like the Star Ocean series(the last two games, actually, have characters that look like they'd fit into the PSO universe), or the design difference between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross(they don't even look like they take place in the same world, considering how DRASTICALLY different Akira Toriyama's artstyle is to Nobuteru Yuki's). That's just a personal peeve of mine, though.

They never did kill off the main series story-wise. I'll see if I can sum it up: In Phantasy Star 2, the inner-most planet disintegrated leaving the survivors to escape to the last remaining two other planets and beyond the Algo system itself (it mentions this in the PS 4 story). The ships seen in the Phantasy Star online games were some of those that evacuated from the Algo system after planet 1's destruction. I wasn't thrilled about PS heading in this direction too but these stories are more Gaiden then the actual main story which would take place in Algo rather then with PSO. I too, would like to see a new proper Phantasy Star game released with the traditional RPG elements.

PSO is probably the only MMO I would play if I could(there is a private server but I am not mentioning it here plus it is glitchy with my laptop) even 10 years later. Such a fun game, simple but fun. Certainly not at the calibur of the single player RPGs but it is the one game that me and my friends would play for hours on end for years to come trying to get the best loot. Universe came along and....I wasn't thrilled about it. I never bought it but I did borrow it and I was annoyed that the game advertised the shit outta the fact that it would be "more story driven". Well what did I get? A more mediocore and bland version of PSO with a paper thin story and gameplay that mirrors online play in the single player, just with bots. Phantasy Star Portable 2 kinda got me back though, it combined elements from Phantasy Star Online, Universe, and Zero(which was great too). Now this is coming out, might be the first subscription mmo i would play if it has one....which knowing SEGA is a big possibility.
