Would a straight transpotion from the 8 bit look to a 2.5D game be what you would want? What would you change or add?
Take Castlevania 2. I think an in game map would be really helpful. I'd through a stage select option for Castlevania 3.
What do you guys think?
-
A stage select option would be cool, for all of the classicvanias. Sometimes I don't feel like playing the whole game, and I can't remember the damn passwords. So yeah a stage select would be nice.
I haven't played Simon's Quest, but I think they should rethink the day and night system. It's a pretty nice feature, but they didn't figure it right. And a map would help I guess.
Another cool feature would be the boss rush. Those games had awesome bosses, and It would be fun to fight all of them in a row.
-
rondo style stage select would be kinda nice, beat the stage and select it later, it also encourages to play at previous levels to power up subweapons before the final battle.
-
a pretty nice feature, but they didn't figure it right.
Please, explain what do you mean?
There is night and day. At the night monsters are more powerfull. and that's that. Maybe they should add some more night or day specific features, but I don't think it amounts to "didn't figure it right" statement. :o
-
she probably meant when that annoying text box appears whenever it transitions from day to night and vise versa. Though a remastered version of simon's quest with 2.5D graphics would look pretty nice. And if they do remake that game, the game should be less cryptic and maybe increase the number of days it takes to get the best ending.
As for the other 2 games, a new stage select would fit for them, and it'll help those that want to replay a certain stage without the need of a password or starting from stage 1 and moving all the way to the desired stage. Also maybe i'm wrong, but doesn't chronicles already count as a CV1 remake?
-
CV2 also needs bosses and a more extensive trek through the ruined Castlevania.
The day/night cycle should be smooth.
And hearts should not be used for currency or experience.
Also, would it kill them to have some candles and torches or SOMETHING to break the monotony of a largely barren world?

I'm talking about the transition between night and day .Not just because of the message, but also because it would often switch to night a little too fast. And just when you're done with night mode , it would switch to night...again.
Shantae also has this feature but it was done correctly. You can play a good amount of time in night mode, and you actually have the chance to save your game before it's night again.
I might be wrong, since I didn't play much of the game, and it was years ago.
-
"Remastered" collection, no. I'd want the games how they originally were and with no crappy smoothing filters and the like. I'd also like to see aaaaaall of the Castlevania games on it.
The only thing I'd really care to see done different is to have the games uncut—and in the case of Simon's Quest and Dracula's Curse, it'd be nice to be given the option to play the NES or Famicom Disk System versions—the latter translated to English. It'd also be nice, just for the heck of it, to have the first game's name entry screen. :p
Also maybe i'm wrong, but doesn't chronicles already count as a CV1 remake?
No. o.o Unless you consider the X68000 game a remake of the first, but I think "remake" isn't the proper word for Haunted Castle, Super Castlevania IV, and the X68000 game.
Edit: 'Course, now after making this post I realize the OP's asking for a Chronicles style game of the NES classics. That would be cool, too—and yeah, in that case, enhancements would be swell.
-
Needs more than just the NES games on it.
-

The day to night mode is done okay, in my opinion. It forces you to think about what you're going to do and where and when you're going to do it, if you're out to get the best ending, at least. That adds another interesting dimension to the game.
A 2.5D remake of those games? No, that's not what I want. I'd rather have really good sprite based graphics. And no, that doesn't mean sprite rips from other games. I'd like to see a complete overhaul of the graphic style, but done with sprites and done with a lot of care. But, honestly, I'd rather see this done in a new game than just some remakes. I think it would be better for the series.

I kinda assumed that title was since it had some familiar areas from CVI, and for the other games based on CV1's story, i just saw them as retellings, so another retelling of CV1's story probably wouldn't hurt, especially during this age.

That would be a great idea, though if its done that way, it'll probably end up being a DL title, not that its a bad thing. Plus i'd like to see retellings of the old NES games with nice 2D or 2.5D graphics.

Konami and Acr System Works should team up for this, but instead of 2d Sprites on 3d background, a Full 2.5d Sprited experience since you can use the same depth techniques on a 5 layer background.

I'm more interested in a 2D Castlevania fighter made by Arc System Works. Now that would be really cool. I'm a huge fan of the GG series and Blazblue is so gorgeous.
-
Arc Systems and Wayforward are the best options if Konami decides to give the 2D Castlevania series to anyone outside themselves.

I agree. May I add VanillaWare to the list? Muramasa the Demon Blade has some of the best 2D graphics I've seen in a while. Even Odin Sphere, a game developed by Vanillaware for the PS2, looks better in terms of graphics than...HoD.

as much as I love the work they do, I really don't want Castlevania to have an anime look. Ayami Kojimas work and whoever did the Ecclesia art is as close to anime as I like my Castlevania

Yeah anime and CV is not so great.

I think he meant the game's graphics/sprites, not the artwork for the characters.
-
anime worked in RoB, but I still prefer the Snes Artwork.
Anime style just takes the personality out of the characters...
-
I think it all depends of the artist. Someone like Obata can kill the personality of the characters with his artwork.
I find the art for OOE to be animeish, although not as bad as the one used in PoR or DoS.

Don't forget, WHOOOAAA, the lush awesomeness of the upcoming Dragon's Crown.
A 2D hand-drawn, HD Castlevania game would be rad. I miss the days of dot art, but that's kind of impossible with such high resolutions. And I'm tired of all the recycled sprites in Castlevania games anyway...
I'd love a hand-drawn game in the European style of Super Castlevania IV.
-
I thought the anime look worked very well for Dracula X. How did you guys feel about it?
-
I far prefer the Super Famicom Dracula XX art to Rondo of Blood, and I would LOOOOOOOOOOVE a part manga, part American comic book look like that for a new game. Too bad it was translated so poorly in the game itself. :p

YUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMM. Coolest Castlevania art ever.

I hate it. It's one of my most disliked thing about that game. The cover art isn't too bad but everything else sucks. I'll take the Dracula XX artwork any day over the generic anime look

Look on the bright side, it worked as opposed to Dawn of Sorrow and PoR where the anime look Just never fit.
-
The anime style in Rondo worked because it was in conjunction with the saturated palette in both sprites and backgrounds, despite their inherent GRIM THEMES, and the poppy rock tunes. It all blended perfectly with the straight up action-packed level design. It embellished on the existing personality set by the game. With Dawn and Portrait, the anime was really disconnected from the games who are more like bland husks than anything else. DXX was nice too. The artstyle matched the mood the game set up. Though I found the backgrounds technically great, I found their actual content really banal compared to Rondo. It's a nice style, it just wasn't executed well in bringing out the potential it had. It fits that game. If Rondo had DXX's art, I don't think it would fit as well. It's really a case-by-case scenario.

Such badass artwork. As much as I like Rondo, the anime artwork does look kinda hokey (especially Dracula. BLEEEEEH)
-
Those DXX artwork are so badass that even Ayami Kojima borrows that Annette design.

Yeah Dragon's crown is prolly the only game I'm excited about. I would even buy a PS3 just so I can play it.
A 2D hand-drawn Castlevania would be awesome. It has to be done by VanillaWare imo.
I'm aware that there are other companies that can make 2D games, but VanillaWare seems to be the closest to the Castlevania universe .Mostly because their games are often set in an European like world.
Another reason would be that there's a lot of details in their games. And the gameplay is very unique. I really think they can add something to the series.
Some may find the artwork a little too anime, but I like it.
-
The artwork for Rondo is pretty cool, in my opinion. They probably went with that sort of look because it would work well with the cutscenes in the game. A similar route was taken with Golden Axe on PC Engine. I'm trying to imagine Rondo's cutscenes done in the style of Super Castlevania IV's cover art and what's forming in my mind is pretty awkward : p
Dracula XX's art is interesting, but its take on Maria Renard is pretty bad.
-
Heh, I wonder if DXC's designs for Maria and Annette are inspired more by DXX's art than Rondo's. In any case, it would've been the greatest if Dracula's art was actually carried on to the sprite.

so bad ass...
-
Annette definitely looks to be much closer to her DXX counterpart. Maria seems to be pretty far removed from either, but I guess closer to Rondo.
-

I think anime worked for ROB because it was different style of animation, more old school and realistic, rather than bright and stylized one like in DOS and POR.

There totally needs to be a 2D hand-drawn game based on this guy's art and this particular style he used. He ought to do new designs for a new game in the same style. It would blow my mind. :o Seeing that kind of great art and Jack Kirby-esque shading in a video game would be amazing.
If the animators of Redline could make it work, so too can...somebody else. :o Or maybe just hire Madhouse to do all the art and animation in-game—again, based on Akihiro Yamada's artwork and designs. Make it HD. Make it full-fledged. Make it Japanese. Bring in some solid sound director(s). Amaaaaaazing.
But something this awesome will never happen in Castlevania, sadly. Not with how the series has been going for the past decade and continues to decline.
