Title: SOTN Richter vs Alucard (gameplay wise)
Post by: JooohnShaft on October 20, 2011, 12:10:15 AM
Who is better to play as: Richter with his whip or Alucard with his vampireness?

Alucard has all the bells and whistles of being the main character, so it's kind of one sided.

That being said, Richter had some awesome things of his own and I'm heavily looking forward to Esco's SotN hack, where Richter will actually get a full-fledged campaign.

Alucard, hands-down. You can equip stuff, you have more moves...the list goes on.

Obviously Alucard.

As much as I also like Richter its pretty apparent that Alucard has the obvious advantage "game wise".

For 1 he is the main character.
2. he can level up to level 99
3.he can equip HIGHLY overpowered weapons like the Shield rod+The Iron shield and the sword familiar sword
4.he has spells that can make him pretty much invincible while still being able to hurt you such as the poison mist.

Now that I think about it this is pretty much a spite thread towards Richter IMO lol.

Alucard, simply because his sprites are awesome.

Alucard is the main character so obviously he's gonna have all the good moves, Richter's cool for a bonus but I could never really master all those damn combos so my gameplay is pretty limited when playing with him

Richter is stiff and awkward. His walk is too slow, his run is generally too fast in some cases. The walk is so slow it's useless for most every platforming segment you can ever find in the game. Not to mention the complete lack of a double jump, which you practically need all the time for the inverted castle. Which brings us to the moves, especially essential ones like Super Jump, are a little bit on the frustrating side.

It was a neat idea adding him in with all the moves, and some new stuff, but realistically a whole game that played like that would be a little cumbersome. Oh wait; CotM.

CotM fixed a bunch of the issues, such as buttons for essential moves like Super Jump, but it still retained that double tap to run while walking was still ridiculously slow. It sometimes made combat maneuverability an issue when you suddenly lose your momentum and cant really do anything to escape a situation unharmed.

I still love CotM though.

The game was clearly designed for Alucard. Even Alucard's physics are more fine-tuned for exploring the castle and level design. It's so much in-tune with the environment that if the game's level design were more combat-intensive or different in any regard, Alucard's controls would fall flat and become cumbersome. Richter was awkward for the reasons Uzo stated. Though, that's actually why I find him to be one of the better extra characters, because he just plays so differently from Alucard movement-wise.

Richter has a huge disadvantage due to being stuck at level one with no upgradeable equipment. Alucard also has access to healing items which Richter does not.

Agreed. As much as I love CotM, an option to turn on auto-run would have made it so much less annoying.

Richter does get stronger actually. But it only happens after you have moved on to the inverted castle. The life-ups you collect also add to Richter's health, however it is gradual so you might not have noticed. I didn't at first.

Alucard Story and Gameplay wise.

As Proved so many times, Richter IS strong, but a Brute who just strikes without strategy.

Alucard has stragey and a ton of variety as well as some spells to boot, the addition of Sub-weapons and special skills with weapons is what makes him Over powered, Not to mention the Shield Rod + Alucard shield which Ranks him one of THE most overpowered characters of all time!

I feel the game gets very stiff without alucards jumping and transformation capabilities.

Alucard has an unfair advantage because the game was designed for him.  If Richter could equip armor, use items, and level up like Alucard, it wouldn't be so one sided and everything would come down to maneuverability.

PoR Richter (RICHITER) in SoTN, problem solved.

CoTM was irritating enough Having to double tap all the time, good thing for gameshark for constant run.
