Title: Otomedius Excellent Out Next Week
Post by: Reinhart77 on October 27, 2011, 11:08:35 AM
Iga speaks.  Game ships Nov 1.

Yeah, this game totally seems to be the kind of thing they'd never release outside of Japan.  But there's enough Otaku out there to want to play it.  Plus, it'd be such a waste not to play a game featuring some characters from franchises from series you might care about.

I'm only getting it for Kokoro Belmont and Hanafuuma Gesshi.  I would appreciate it if they actually had a Castlevania based stage in it.  Don't know how far I'll get into the game, as I'm not that interested in side shooters, but I have dabbled in Gradius ReBirth a little.  I'll be getting the artbook for any related Castlevania art and any additional backstory they might add in for Kokoro (I hear she might be Julius' sister or daughter and thinks she's the reincarnation of Simon Belmont, I gotta confirm if that's the case), but the pillow case is a bit much for me.

The funny thing is that IGA mentioned that he always wanted to do a Gradius.
Now that he finally can,

it's otomedius uguuuuu

But it seems only Gunlord and thernz could comprehend this game.

Kiyuhito posted on the Castlevania Wiki that Michiru Yamane posted on her MichiruDiary that she wrote a song in Otomedius Excellent.  He speculates that it could be the DLC "Kokoro BGM Pack".  Maybe we'll get a good CV tune out of this game?  Or maybe it'll just be a wacky thing, who knows.

Because a (non-canon?) Belmont is in the game. :P

Would have rather saw a real Gradius game and not some anime slut riding on top of an air plane.

Got the game, but Kokoro Belmont character or music DLC isn't available yet.  Oh well, I was at least able to play as Hanafuuma Gesshi, whose inspiration was at least in a Castlevania game (Getsu Fuma).

I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of character profiles from what I can tell.  I can't really tell who any of these characters are or what series they are from.  I was hoping for some background story in the art book, but alas, no.  There at least was a pic of Kokoro in the artbook.  It showed a mildly amusing shot of her ending where:

I really suck at games like this, but fortunately, there seems to be unlimited continues, so I can just blunder my way through the whole game so that I can at least see all the stages.  Probably won't unlock anything cool that way though, oh well.

I guess the BGM Kokoro Belmondo Pack contains a different tune by Michiru Yamane for each level in the game.  Once that'll be out, it'll be fun to at least hear some Castlevania music in the background while playing the game.  (http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Otomedius_Excellent (http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Otomedius_Excellent))

This /thing/ is a complete flop, thank God for letting Igarashi out of castlevania, glory to heavens! http://www.gameinformer.com/games/otomedius_excellent/b/xbox360/archive/2011/11/09/otomedius-excellent-review.aspx (http://www.gameinformer.com/games/otomedius_excellent/b/xbox360/archive/2011/11/09/otomedius-excellent-review.aspx)

That reviewer has apparently never played the Gradius series.  Like, ever.
His complaints are "I lose everything when I take a hit" and "You have to light up the bars to get to the power up you want by collecting the power ups", etc.

However, it does concern me that it doesn't show you the power up name (instead it just lights up the name of the character?  From what the reviewer said).
Also, the 'stock ticker' dialogue the reviewer is mentioning.

Then again, what do I care?  I don't have an X360 anyway, bwahaha. :P

Kokoro Belmont is now available as DLC, as well as her stage music and gamer profile pics.

She actually does play as a Belmont.  Her default power ups include a Laser Whip, Holy Water, a Boomerang Cross, and an Ax.  She can also replace some of those sub-weapons with a Knife or Boomerang, but those are attacks available to several other characters and might not be Castlevania inspired.  If you've ever wanted to know what it'd be like playing a Gradius game with a Castlevania character, now's your chance.

I haven't played her too much yet.  When she has a sub-weapon equipped, it is always used at the same time as firing her main laser, rather than by pressing a different button as in a Castlevania game.  I think she can have more than one sub-weapon equipped at a time, which are all thrown simultaneously when she attacks.  The laser whip is a continuous "flexible" beam attack that replaces her normal laser.

The music fits the stages pretty well.  There's occasionally a couple notes from a Castlevania song, such as some Theme of Simon during boss battles.

Well, it's not like the actual game itself is bad. From what I heard anyway.

Edit: No wait it looks terrible.

What utter trash! The gfx are god awful, the music is unmemorable, the gameplay is not exciting, and most enemies are absolutely DULL to look at!

As for the engine itself for the game: complete utter and useless dried up hippo shit!

Gradius V came out YEARS AGO! And it blows this game away in every aspect; even gfx. And that is just sad. I fail to see how Konami can have a game as AMAZING as Gradius V made, yet hasn't made a half descent sequel since.  >:(

Strangely enough that seems to be somewhat of a trend in shmups now. They're probably going for the extra sales such a thing can bring given how tough it is to sell shmups these days.

That's Ecchi or Cheesecake at best.
It's not full-on Hentai.
Am I right, Otaku? Back me up, here. :P
