I've been playing SOTN lately and so my roommate decided he wanted to try it. He has made it to the inverted castle but something is wrong. Every sword he has does almost no damage at all to enemies that have metal armor. Killing the tin man with the crissaegrim takes like 45 seconds instead of 3 seconds, because each swipe only does 1 damage. Each swipe only does 3 damage on the knights. He is at level 37, and the appropriate amount of damage is inflicted on all other enemies that DON'T have metal armor. I have changed all of his different equipped items lest one of them is causing it, and it hasn't helped. I don't think I have ever seen this problem before. Does anyone know what's causing it?
-
That's really weird. What way is he playing it? Is it the PS1 disc in a PS1 or PS2? The PSP version in DXC? Or, is it an emulator? If it is an emulator, it could be a bug. If it is the actual PS1 disc or the DXC version, I can't explain it.
-
It is the original black label PS1 disc being played in a PS2.

Then I can't explain it. Somehow some part of the game data must've gotten corrupted.
-
It's so bizarre, it's really driving me crazy. I hope someone here knows what's up.

Some enemies have resistances to certain types of items. Maybe it's actually doing what it's supposed to. I dunno, though. I use the Chakram myself.

@Opium. Hey check alucard's inventory. Make sure your weapon isn't a curseed sword or soemthing. I believe their are at least a couple in the game. They may do very little damage or even hurt you when you swing the sword. It is hard to keep track with all the weapons. Check to make sure your not wearing a skull necklace or some cursed gear that will take your attack power that low. You should be killing the tin man's with pretty much 1 or 2 crissagraem swipes not 45. Yeah that does sound weird. Well also if you play it in a ps2. Check your memory card to make sure it saves other games. IF nothing else it may be a messed up disc or ps2 in worst case scenario. ???? Something's gotta be up. Crissagraem is one of the most powerful weapons in the game and the chakram throwing disc should be pretty strong aswell.

It's definitely not an accessory like a ring or something. Did I mention that the sword strikes make a clinking noise? Someone out there has to know wtf is going on.
-
I've never heard of this before and I have several copies of SotN too.
-
What weapon is he using?

What weapon is he using?
We have tried several swords, they all just make a clinking sound against armor and do very minimal damage. The swords do the expected amount of damage to enemies that do not have armor. I have multiple copies of the game as well, and I have never seen this before. We have equipped/unequipped all of his accessories, armor, even relics to try to figure out what is causing it and we still can't figure it out.
I first noticed it in the inverted library when he attacked the tin men using the crissaegrim. We thought it was strange and moved on. Then when he got to the corridors around the clock room (you know the ones where you kill the knights to gain a buttload of experience points) and found the same effect on them. It seems that enemies that are metal or have metal armor seemed resistant to sword strikes for some reason. However, axe armors are receiving damage at the expected rate, and they have armor, so wtf? So far it seems it is just the tin men and the aforementioned knights. He pressed on all the way to galgamoth, and I asked him if he had noticed it with other enemies and he said no.
It is strange to say the least. This is his first playthrough so I imagine he has done a lot of things in unconventional ways because he is a beginner. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of what it could be. Could it be that he warped back and forth between the regular and inverted castles a dozen times or so for no apparent reason? I have no clue. I've asked on 2 other forums as well as done extensive internet searches on the issue and have found nothing. I have done several playthroughs using the disc he is using, and it never happened to me. I guess for now it remains a mystery.

From what i remember, tin men and final guards are almost invulnerable to cutting attacks. If he has a ring of varda or two or ring of ares, let him equipe it and try again attacking these enemies. If the damage is not normal, then it must be a glitch of the game. As for the metal sound, at least for the tin men is normal, but for the final guards, it isn't!!!
-
Yeah, in the Inverted Castle, the Tin Man, Final Guard, and a few other enemies have a defense against CUT, so it would take a while for some weapons to get through to them, while if you switch to another weapon (a mace) or switch to Magic, you'll be doing more adequate damage.
So, as Dark Nemesis says, you are probably running into these enemies, which are quite strong.
-
I know they have some resistance to cut, but this is ridiculous. I have another enemy to add to the list - Catobeplas. Anyways, here are his current stats. Despite these stats, the final guards only take 7 damage, and Catobeplas takes a mere 1 damage !!!
Can someone plz study these photos and see if anything looks amiss?
(Sorry one of the photos is blurry, but he is at level 51 in case you can't see)

If you already changed ur whole equipment without any effect. If you tried everything without a happy end there are just 2 reasons why it is, like it is.
1. It´s supposed too (but like for others, never seen something like that or heard about such a thing)
but the real reason will be for sure number 2
2. It´s for sure a bug. (freacking sword sound? all said, dont you think?) just messed up.
Looks like you are the only one with a problem like this ever.
I played a few days ago Spiderman 2 on Ps2. I cant finish the 2nd mission because if i jump down from the building and try to swing it get stuck, every time...I see the web i did shoot, but not even close to his hand and he is going down the air to the street in replay mode...takes 8mins b4 he hits the street and i start again from the house.
not the only game i had problems...
Maybe it has something do to with the Ps2 itself.
Edit: I have a 2 playstation 2. i will try the other one out today to see, if i have the same problems...

From what i can see in the pictures, his attack is very low, try the equipment i mentioned above and see what happens. Try ring of varda, ring of ares, king stone or ring of feanor. Also, i don't remember any enemy on the game with that name Catobeplas??? Maybe you mean Gorgon??? He is also high resistant to cut attacks, especially from the front. Try attacking him from behind and see what happens!!!
-
His attack is almost the same as mine, the difference is minimal, and my swords are doing much much more damage than his. And..catobeplas? am I thinking of the same enemy but different game? I must be, if you knew what I was talking about.
Is it because my game is a replay? I know I had Ring of Varda during the part with final guards, but is that enough to make my attack do over 60 damage while his does just 3-6 ?
-
Ring Of Varda gives all your stats a large boost: +40 strength, +35 defense, +30 intelligence, and +15 luck. That i believe is enough to make a difference!!!
-
Opium, try equipping the following:
dragon's helm
twilight cloak
ring of varda
These should help. The ring of varda gives you a significant boost to all stats and the dragon's helm increases your attack by 5. Plus, according to its description, it lowers the enemy's defense. You (or your friend) has the stone mask equipped to the head. I'm starting to think the reason you are doing so little damage to those enemies is because you don't have the dragon's helm equipped.
Oh, and to all of you who don't know what catobeplas is, I think Opium was talking about that stone bull monster in the Black Marble Gallery near where the Guardians are located. They're actually called gorgon if memory serves.
-
Opium I tried your friend's setup and had the same result. I did about 1 damage to Gorgon ad 7 damages to the final guards. I tried removing the accessories(Necklace of J and Nauglamir) with the same result. After a while I unequipped the stone mask and I could do normal damages again. Darkwzrd4 is right. It's the stone mask.
It's supposed to boost Intelligence and Defense. It's not supposed to affect your attack power though. Is it a bug or something? Or are these enemies strong against some element that might be present in the Stone mask ? If you look at the bestiary you'll see that the Gorgon is strong against Fire, Stone, Cut and hit. The final guard is strong against Cut ,Fire, Ice, Thunder and absorbs Dark. Not sure which one is added by the Stone Mask, but either way at this point of the game you better use the Dragon's helm or Wizard hat. They're by far the best head gear you can get in the game. Hope I could help.
Btw I encountered this problem while playing the Japanese version.
EDIT: OK so I tried equipping the stone mask with Muramasa and i could do normal damages. It's not the stone mask. These enemies are strong against Cut, so any sword like Crissaegrim or even Rune Sword won't do much damage. The final guards are immune to Fire. If you equip the Firebrand it makes a clinging sound and the word Guard appears on the final guard. Again at this point of the game it is better to equip stronger armor and weapons and a ring of varda if you have one , if you don't want to spend too much time on those enemies.

I've used the crissaegrim on the aforementioned enemies in the past many times and they all went down within a few seconds. Even if I un-equip my rings of Varta I still defeated them easy. It has to be a bug in the disk or something that's causing this issue. Not all disk copies record perfectly.

I was about to say that I'm retarded for misjudging what a difference varda made, and I must have simply forgotten how strong those enemies were since the last time I played a fresh game, until I read this.
I don't know wtf to think now. Is there nothing wrong with the game and my memory is just failing me on how it's supposed to be? - or is this something that certainly isn't right and I just can't figure out what the problem is? Knowing how code runs, I tend to disbelieve that it's a 'bug' which behaves so specifically yet is unknown up until now.
At any rate, we're both finished with our games now and we're moving on. Super Mario Land 3D is where it's at until Sunday, then Skyward Sword. I'm just gonna tuck this issue away until the next time I dust off SotN.
