http://www.mozilla.org/sopa/ (http://www.mozilla.org/sopa/)
this and a good number of websites are fighting against internet censorship!
Don't be a fucking stiff!, fight for your porn! fight for your Freedom!
-
I don't need porn.
-
This isn't limited to porn censorship. Copyright "protection" is included as well.
-
pretty much over HALF of the internet would be blacklisted....
this site will most likely be included.
-
Man, this is bad.
-
Man, this is bad.
A severe understatement, my friend.
-
If Mozilla Firefox and I bet Chrome is rallying against it, you know some shit will go down if that bill is passed.
-
The internet was meant to be free. It is perhaps the last free place here on earth. Everything else is f**ked up with useless and ridiculous forms of censorship brought on by institutions who can't or don't want to understand what it means to be human anymore. It allows us to be creative and share that creativity throughout the rest of the world.
-
There's still the little problem of the Judiciary branch. Even if Congress passes something, the Supreme Court still has to say it's a legal act of Congress, and something like this would definitely make it onto the Court's desk.
-
But Judges are obviously bought... maybe not all of them but a good deal of them no doubt. One judge used to be a lobbyist for the RIAA.
-
yeah but this is a case where people have power, hell, the gov't works for is people, not the other way around!
but today, who follows that anymore.... people grow ignorant and truly don't know the purpose of our gov't ultimately giving it power over it's people...
....but still, WE HAVE A VOICE!

How bad is it?
I believe the title "Stop Internet censorship before it starts" is a bit misleading. Severe Internet censorship is in full scale in China and many Arab states, for example.
Is this limited only to America? What kind of censorship is to be implemented? On content? On entire websites? Is this a tool against internet piracy? 'Cause when we talk of piracy it can be reduced, but never completely destroyed...

The poor and vague wording of the law would pretty much consider any act of things such as streaming content not owned by you, (for example, a castlevania game on youtube) an act of pirace and can have you arrested for it. Minecraft Creator Notch is against it, and has even stated that if it does go through, he will have to add a special clause to the terms of agreement just so people can still put Minecraft videos on Youtube.
It would DESTROY the internet.
You know hoe Justin Beiber got famous? By making covers of other artist's songs on youtube. This bill? Could put him behind bars for that.

I fail to see the problem here.

Trust me, JB getting prison-raped is not worth screwing the Internet over.

Trust me, JB getting prison-raped is not worth screwing the Internet over.
Hmm... choices... choices
-
Let me put it this way for you: if JB can get imprisoned for singing rap songs, then by that logic Jorge can get imprisoned for arranging video game music.
I don't mean to threaten our admin (since that would be completely idiotic and will result in perma-ban), but that's how bad the situation is.
-

Bahahaha... well, it'll also stop people from posting gameplay online.
-
I will protect Jorge no matter what!!!! This bill is my enemy >:( >:( >:( >:(

Like I said: Choices.... Choices... :P
(nah I'm absolutely against this.)

I could go to jail for making music covers of videogame tunes, lawlz.
-
Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our freedom, but they'll never take... OUR FREE POOOORRRRRN!
-
So can we confirm this bill as a plot by Dracula?

I'm in favor of heavily regulating Internet pornography, but this isn't what the bill is about at all. The bill is really bogus... Hope this thing doesn't get passed.
Hollywood, MPAA, RIAA, etc...eat a dick.
-
I'm all in favor of preventing the next 2 girls 1 cup, but I'll be damned if the Gov't controls what I can or Can't do on the only place that seems free and lawless.
-
AMIMAL...uhh I mean INTERNET FREEDOM NOW!

I agree but the problem is that if you give them one step in that direction it's only a matter of time before they change the definition of what that can and cannot censor.

If this comes to pass, we can just put on Guy Fawkes masks and go blow up the Capitol Building in the dead of the night. It worked in "V For Vendetta" ... I think... They never really did clarify at the end of that if the people got their freedoms back or not. I got the impression that they got their sense of freedom back, but were probably just a bunch of Occupy protesters at best by the end.

Can't hollywood already remove and or sensor whatever they want? Isn't that why we have youtube copyright infringement? Why do they need the extra power? It's not going to get them any more sales.
But if we boycott them, they'll think that their decline in sales is due to piracy, so they'll try to push harder to get that extra power.

lol @ Piracy prevention, the entertainment Biz is always trying to find ways to bust Piracy just to be 1 up'd by the pirates every time...
They act like it's a big deal... yet that shit been going on for ages, it is literally impossible to halt it.
Then Agian, lets see how bad Piracy has hurt the sales of the latest Call of Duty game OH WAIT!
-
I'm no saint but I still think that it would be nice to see something done to decrease piracy, it's pretty sad to hear things like "why would I buy this game when I can just pirate it!" and “I think I'm going to pirate Zelda this time around” being said like it’s not even questionable practice. Its even sadder when it comes from students of Game Design who I imagine are expecting to be paid well for all their hard work once they start creating games themselves.

it is truly sad when good games are pirated and the Devs don't get the money that the game is worth.

Make good games/movies/etc and make them readily accessible.
There will always be people who'll pirate just to pirate but a good game has proven to do good regardless.
-
The movie industry made the same crusade against VHS when it was released. They opposed it, claimed the practice will shut them down forever and destroy the market putting them out of business. Did it? Of course not. They eventually embraced it as a distribution medium and they were bale to even increase sales.
Digital distribution is no different. Once they embrace it, like the music industry has, people will be willing and able to buy it that way. It is much more convenient and easy to download than go out and buy. It should be cheaper as well, considering there is no physical media to produce. The movie industry has thus far not embraced it though so people will continue to obtain the movies they want in the new format they want regardless if they have to pay or not.
The movie industry has so far almost completely shunned the idea of digital distribution. Even the ones they've done, they are still doing wrong. They impose insane DRM, and expiration. Not to mention do not discount for the lack of producing physical media. It screws over the legitimate consumer so much, I can't see a reason to recommend buying it legit over pirating to be completely honest.
-
Well, actors are expensive nowadays, so they have to make their money back somehow. ... And then blow it all on backing bills and other questionable measures in Congress...
-

Did you mean the BETA Max machine? It was VHS' predecessor.

I wouldn't discuss the game industry, but if there's one thing I can say is that if I really like a band, or a certain movie, I'd buy it. Owning a pirated copy just doesn't feel right (plus a collection of pirated albums is not really a collection.) And if I didn't? Well, I should have the right to try before I buy. Why should I pay money for an album that sucks? So no, digital media is just not the same thing as having a album or a DVD.

They already made porn of a government clerk? O_O Dang...rule 34 again, I suppose.

yup.

Really? he vowed to veto it? insteresting.... I'd have thought he'd be all for it.
Secondly... a veto isn't a be all end all action, it can be overruled by the house.
-

I think Obama found some details in the bill that were questionable. Details that would, in the long-run would cause more harm then prevent. I'm assuming that whom ever wrote it was wanting just that much more power then/she currently has. Obama probably saw this and vetoed it.
-
Just use this as your handy dandy guide to the important SOPA players.
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg337.imageshack.us%2Fimg337%2F2528%2F1324001660128.jpg&hash=ef97e090871be8cb627dc4f76489d62b48b0eb7c)
that guy who looks like Gollum down there wrote the bill.
Also, guess what? The 4 down there? All get campaign money from the TV and Entertainment industry.
-
I myself am against the SOPA censorship deal, however, basically yeah, SOPA is "Supposedly" supposed to be against piracy sites. I won't mention any sites by name just in case it'll cause this site to have even more trouble, but I know of some sites that probably will be shutdown most assuredly. However fan sites I'm not entirely sure about.
I mean, they're site dedications. They aren't making money or stealing money from companies. If anything they help support the things they're dedicated to, and thus, get more people interested and to buy stuff.
The music and movie and TV show thing is fairly up for debate. Actually it isn't really for some terms. To me, it all really depends on the movie, and show. Why? Well, look at it this way. I can understand someone getting steamed about say a currently released movie and show, that isn't available on DVD or is just released on DVD. But there are some lines to be drawn. Like an OLD old old TV show or movie, that has had no DVD release what so ever, and I think if people want to see it, they should.
Also watching games on youtube either gets you interested in buying the game later, or it doesn't. If anything youtube has increased sales or reduced sales accordingly. If something is bad, something is BAD.
But think there are a fair good amount of people going against the SOPA thing. I've seen people post certain things on DA and there are several people agreeing with the poster on how bad it is. There is ONE place I'd have thought would have probably really got things moving when I tried to announce it over there, buuuuut they don't seem to honestly care none too much. Like, it's only gotten 37 views since it's been posted. They obviously aren't too concerned about it. Even though the whole site itself can be considered a major piracy site probably.
Point is, I see that a good major amount of people are against it, and are probably acting on it now. Hopefully we'll beat this thing.
And I'm just throwing it out there, I'm NOT doing this for no stupid porn. I myself can live without and have lived without it for 22 years.
-

Thats the issue. SOPA is so vaguely worded that it means sites like these COULD get prosecuted.
And without a court order either. All it takes is a legit looking document from some lawyer or something. Something any lawman can write. And then its up to the accused site to either shut down, or risk the mystery consequences.
-
The other problem... if SOPA doesn't pass on the 21. Yes... they delayed it like a week. There is still the Protect IP bill. On another site, someone said something that seems to make a good deal of sense to me... Since SOPA is so ridiculous... it seems the Protect IP bill will come in afterwards and make people think "Oh that's not as bad" and accept it because of that.
-
Don't count on it.
Not with organizations like Demand Progress.

The law is scary and badly written. I went ahead and took my site down, and it leaves NO difference for non-profit fanism and true copyright pirates. I would strongly suggest Kurt to consider shutting down his site (this site) if it passes. From a liability stance its a nightmare. Content providers are DIRECTLY held LEGALLY responsible for users actions. It goes so far to say humming a copyrighted tune on youtube (if it continues to run that is) could land the user up to 5 years felony in jail, its that badly written. Horrible law, but i'm sure it will probably pass. After all the veto threat was used against the NDAA and it was signed anyways (National Defense Authorization Act). Without getting into all the gritty details allows the US military to assasinate or imprison indefinetely without trial or notification even full citizens. That passed both houses and was signed into law, its laughable to think that something less offensive then the NDAA won't pass and be signed. Bye bye republic, were are turning into a corporate kleptocracy.

Hmm, torrents.
You know, I just thought of something. The internet censorship bill is meant to stop pirates, right? What if it just caused piracy to boom, due to a whole bunch of people wanting free files before they can't potentially get them anymore?
What if the whole thing just worsens the very thing that they're trying to prevent?
-

I also recently learned he vowed to veto the NDAA bill, but he signed it reluctantly.
-
Been leading my own little chorus against PIPA and SOPA since I heard about them last year.
If this bill passes, we're all screwed. And so too shall be the future.
-
I guess today's the day that they vote on this bill... several websites I regularly frequent are in protest mode due to this and they are encouraging everyone to vote down the bill so it doesn't pass. And after all the Snake-head sh*t I've about it I know who I'm gonna vote for.

That's exactly what it'll do. That's how it works. The tighter the grip the government has on something people want, the more criminal people become to protect their right to it. Look at Prohibition. If this passes everyone that owns a copyrighted DVD and a dvd reader should copy every movie and TV show they have and put it on the internet. Now that would be a real protest that would have the entertainment industry shitting bricks. Plus the people in charge with the legal repercussions of it would be overwhelmed and know where to start. You can't have a case of the People V. The People after all.

Apparently that exactly what's going to happen, not only that you can get prosecuted for something as harmless as posting screenshots from tv series, movies or videos games on Tumblr and similar sites but also this is going to "promote" hackers' activities. So it looks like it's gonna be a total mess, this may screw up Internet altogether
-

Not that I agree with all this nonsense about censoring the internet but you seem to be forgetting that pirates have absolutely no right to what they are downloading, saying that they do would be like saying I have the right to steal all your posessions or kill your family just because I can. Just thought I'd point that out.
-
I think he means the right to the internet. Which, I believe Sweden now claim as a right.
