So, on a retro forum some guy posted this...
"hey guys, i got in a batch off games today, in there was a castlevnia SOTN LE, but what was weird was that under the manual i found a disc thinking it was a copied disc by the look of it but i turnt it around to find it has a black underside and looks to be an original.
So im posting on here to find out some information on it and see if anyone can shed some light on this, a couple off people that i have spoke to so far say this could quite possibly be a beta version so could anyone spread any information on this?"

Hmm... only version I know of is the SotN E3 version from 1997, which included the prologue & the beginning of the castle
Castlevania : Symphony of the Night -E3 Version- (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDbOdEZ8O6U#)
It ends with "coming soon, 1997." If that guy has this version then he has one of the rarest CV items in his hands (the Bloodlines beta is most likely the rarest, however). I have 4 copies in my grand collection, of course 8)

I think you'll be able to find some information at unseen64 dot net.
That's were I usually go when I'm looking for these kind of stuff.

About the only info I could have for him is just to say 'try to play it and see what happens.' If it really is SotN on there then he gets a little closer to knowing what it is. He'd likely have to find a way to analyze any ID info the disk has or analyze the files on the disk to see if they match up with known versions of SotN. It's possible it's a demo version like what was previously mentioned or a version sent out to magazines for reviews which can sometimes be slightly different than final versions.

I only know and have a copy of the E3 demo special version, where you can play the game, up to the Richter battle at the colosseum, because after you lose or win the battle, you'll get the message, coming soon, 1997.(if you use a library card, you can avoid the message and play the game, up to the end, but some dialogues are missing, only voice recording exists. Also the loading room on catacombs, isn't accessible from inside or outside catacombs. You'll have to use a library card to exit. Abandon mines, also aren't accessible, since the switch, that activates the skeleton ape, isn't on game)
Also it has the option to make a special start, where you start from catacombs, with increased stats and many equipment available.
Other than that, i don't know the existence of any other version/demo of the game.

Memorex make colored underside discs... so this could be eitherway. I've had black underside ones... though the top had memorex on it...
Still those are only pictures, he could've easily used 2 different discs =/
