Topic. And just to clarify, 2-D refers strictly to the style of gameplay. The actual graphics could be 2.5-D or Hi-Res Sprites. The format could be ClassicVania, MetroidVania, or maybe even something entirely new. This is your imagination, your standards, and your ideal. How much are you willing to pay for QUALITY?
-
Quality is absolutely objective. I think the visual quality would have less to do with it and more about the core mechanics the game is founded on. For example, Order of Ecclesia reuses materials from other games, but the core foundation and structure of the game is quite solid.
I'm not even sure if I can answer this. Quality is fun, and if the game is full of fun, I'm willing to pay the suggested retail price. I'm very simple.
-
Price will only depend on the console on which the game is released.
-
Not paying more than 45 for a 2D game.
-

This all about your personal ideals. If you have a favorite console, let your imagination run with it.
-
I would gladly pay 60, if it lasts 40hrs and it's completely awesome (the best case escenario)
Make it less than 30hrs and forget about it.
-
I voted 60+ but let me be clear. Castlevania is the ONLY game I would spend that kind of money on (I've only played one or two games this whole generation that I thought were worth full price). It would have to be made in the old-school style with the old timeline (I would also accept 3d but it would have to be done well [I know that wasn't part of the poll but I'm just throwing that out there]). I have a lot of personal preferences (Alucard starring SotN-esque sequel). But anything in the old timeline at this point. I've been waiting since OoE.
-
I can't vote.
Insufficient data. Where this game will be released? What this will be?
Because if this game will be released for the console I don't have - I will not buy it at all.
-
Not paying more than 45 for a 2D game.
so no 2D game could ever possibly be worth more than $45 to you, correct?
-
I'd like to say I'd only pay a certain amount out of principle, but I'll be totally honest and say that I'd probably buy a Castlevania game at any price.
But also, that's knowing that, realistically, Konami would probably never come out with a 2D game for more than $20 tops. Although I'd love to see a 2D game that matches a full retail release in terms of content and length, it's really hard to imagine.
-
A good game is a good game. I don't make distinction between 2D and 3D where that's concerned. I've played many 2D games that I feel are better than many 3D games I've played, and I've played many 3D games that are better than many 2D games I've played.
I'm willing to pay full, regular price for a good game, relative to whatever platform it's on.
so no 2D game could ever possibly be worth more than $45 to you, correct?
I also feel it's strange to see something like that written on a Castlevania forum, of all places. This mentality that 2D needs to sit in the back of the bus, as though it's Rosa Parks, is very weird to me, especially seeing it at a place like this. Like, it's not worth as much as 3D, or it has to meet some special distinct criteria to be worth as much as any 3D game : /

well, right, exactly. though i was going to withhold my opinion and just let him answer the question first.
but the economic basis behind a statement like "i wouldn't pay more than $X for Y" suggests that one is capping the value of Y at $X. which is fine; one is entitled to one's opinion. but i wanted to establish that first, and i'm curious why.
-
This is too easy.
I would easily pay up 60+ bones for a new 2D castlevania. Hell, I 'd probably dish out over $100 because-
i)It's been too damn long since a "new" "quality" 2D castlevania came out (harmony of despair doesn't count as "new" or "quality" for me)
ii)I'm a raging castlevania fan, i just throw my money at Konami when a new castlevania title comes out (excluding harmony of despair)
iii)A castlevania game that "exceeds my expectations" would probably be considered the greatest game of all time in my book
Honestly, if all votes aren't for the $60+ option how can we even call ourselves a castlevania fan forum?
-
The game better be damn near perfect or be something I'm really hyped about for me to pay 60... I usually wait til it's less til I buy it nowadays.
-
I'd definately be willing to pay over $60, however there are still a lot of other factors besides quality that would determine whether I'd pick up a well made 2D castlevania.
-
Moneys hard to come by which is why like many I want till the time is right to but it cheap, and in this case Pre-order this "high-quality" cv that would kick all kinds of candy @$$ and pay it off little by little that is what I did with LoS or anyother preorder.
-
Mmmm 2D Castleroid with procedurally generated level layout, enemy and equipment locations...
But also, that's knowing that, realistically, Konami would probably never come out with a 2D game for more than $20 tops. Although I'd love to see a 2D game that matches a full retail release in terms of content and length, it's really hard to imagine.
...Eh? Am I reading this right or missing the context? The DS games were 35 weren't they?
-
Unfortoonittly the window of opportunity for a true SotN-successor has long passed; it hsould have been mayed in the winter solstice of 1998 & released in '99, while all the original programmers & artists that worked on Symphony were still under 1 roof and in their prime. Instead Konami decided to invest in 3DVania
But if they(Konami) were like Vanillaware & released a retail 2D console game, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. And if you don't like, then you're just a hater. Nuff said.

Why, with any and every poll, is there always at least one person who can't follow directions?
My vote is $50.00 - $60.00. Honestly, considering that I remember NES games being around $50.00 back in the late 80s/early 90s, I don't think that the aforementioned range is too much to ask for a high-quality 2D game.
-
Not paying more than 45 for a 2D game.
I wouldn't pay more than $20 even for a 3D game.
*kisses BitTorrent*
-
If they ever made another game SoTN quality or better I would happily pay $60 or more. Why not? I've been waiting since 1997.
-
If this game were to be a Classicvania, then the most I'm willing to pay is $30, even if they don't recycle sprites. Anything more than that is probably too much unless it's 2.5D or like DK Returns and Sonic Generations, and is a console title.
-

Yeah, but I was talking in terms of a console release, either as a download or a disc. I guess I'd forgotten about the handhelds.
-
$40 is the most I'll pay for just about any game with few exceptions. A really solid 2D console Castlevania game I may reach to $50 for, but $60 is just absurd for any game.
-
Now this is very fascinating to is watch... 8)
I'm anxious to make an analysis of this, but these polls usually peak around 40-50 votes --so I'll let this run its course before drawing any premature conclusions...
-
If it was a new 2.5D castlevania with the same quality and gameplay as symphony and on a console and not a handheld than I would gladly pay 60 bucks no question.
-
for a cv game that would satisfy all the requirements one could think of? Id pay $100+ for such a masterpiece.
-
On the other hand if this game was a console release, I'd wait when it would become cheaper.
If this DLC game, I'd bought at the heartbeat, since DLC games usually have low prices.
And if it was portable, I'd wait for the emulator. I don't like handheld consoles and there is no reason for me to buy console for a single game.
And if you don't like, then you're just a hater. Nuff said.
Instant rimshot?
-
the most i'd want to pay for any 2D game is exactly $50. now, i'll be happy to spend another $50 on DLC though.
-
I didn't even pay $40 for Shining Force III Scenario 2, and that's a flippin collector's item (and needed to play Scenario 3, which was sold separately). And that was 3D.

Someone's willing to charge $500 for a 2D game, so quite possibly someone somewhere out there is stupid enough to pay $500 for a 2D game. Shit, if I could get $100 for my copy of CV3 (I have the box too!, but it's in crappy condition), I'd make 1000% profit!
http://boingboing.net/2010/02/10/old-nintendo-nes-sys.html (http://boingboing.net/2010/02/10/old-nintendo-nes-sys.html)
Someone paid $13k for a couple games and the system to play them on.
And yeah, when you consider inflation and all that, video games these days are cheaper than they were in the past. They were freaking outrageous in the old days. Hell it was over $100 just for a NeoGeo game. NES games were $10 used at the local game store where I grew up when the Playstation was out, and nowadays $10 can get you a brand new game that entered the market just two years ago. So of course I wouldn't pay more than $40 for a 2D game or even a 3D game because the technology is cheap enough now that games should be very cheap. A cartridge game, sure I can justify spending money on that. But a DVD game? Those cost 10 cents to make!
-
Why, with any and every poll, is there always at least one person who can't follow directions?
1) I already have voted.
2) Technically there is absolutely no data to make any accurate vote and hence there is no any direction to follow.
-
I don't pay more than $30 for a game unless it's something I truly crave (like I did with Uncharted 3).
Seeing as Castlevania has witnessed a very strong drop on my list of gaming priorities since Ecclesia came out, it's not likely I'd shell out top dollar for any Castlevania game at all.

Wow
ANY castlevania game?
Even one that meets your personal taste (assuming you have one)?
-
Probably not.
I'd say more, but I think it would all belong in a different topic, now that I think about it.
So, no, under no realistic circumstances would I pay more than $30 for a new Castlevania game.
-
Well, if you paid $40 for it and then sold it to GameStop or on Ebay for $11 or more, you'd technically be spending less than $30 on it.
-
I'd pay top dollar, even if it was more than $60, as long as the game was good. But if there was any doubt about the quality after reading reviews, I'd wait to find it used.
But if I knew I was getting an amazing game, like SotN or CV3 or CV4, I would easily pay $60 to own it.
