Title: That awesome movie of awesomely awesome awesomeness that you should totally see
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on February 09, 2012, 03:19:20 AM
I do not want to watch "Super 8". At all. With anybody. Ever.
And yet people keep asking me to.
I might change my mind, if I were ever to be given a solid, concise argument packed with reasons why I should see it. But that never happens. Instead, I get the following conversation:

Quote from:  every conversation about a non-descript "awesome movie" I've ever had.
Guy: HEY! SEE THIS MOVIE! IT'S AWESOME!

Me: How so?

Guy: IT JUST IS! GO SEE IT!

Me: What makes it awesome?

Guy: It's awesomeness is the source and proof of the awesome!

Me: You didn't even bother answering. What is so good about it?

Guy: How awesome it is!

Me: That's a dodge. It's not an answer in the slightest. What is so good about the movie? Why should I even care?

Guy: JUST SEE IT! IT'S TOTALLY FREAKING AWESOME!

Me: I refuse to see a movie based entirely on how "awesome" people say it is. I am only going to be swayed by hard facts. Who's in it?

Guy: AWESOME PEOPLE.

Me: Who directed and produced it?

Guy: AWESOMER PEOPLE.

Me: What's the story like?

Guy: Awesomely awesome.

Me: *sigh* Show me a trailer.

*is shown a generic looking trailer that tries too hard to be edgy/epic/mysterious*

Me: I am unmoved.

Guy: It got rave reviews from the critics!

Me: So did "The Hurt Locker". What does that tell you about critics?

Guy: JUST GO SEE IT! It's awesome!

Me: I have repeatedly asked for information concerning this "awesome movie" you are pushing. You have failed to produce a single shred of credible evidence in your defense. Were this a criminal court, you'd be behind bars if for no other reason than utterly failing to provide a serious defense. As it happens, I merely will not see this "awesome movie" until such evidence is presented that overturns this court's judgment. Good day sir. Court is adjourned. *walks off*

I'm sure we've all suffered through a conversation like this at some point. It can't just be me. It's statistically impossible.
'Fess up. Tell us a story folks.

What was that "awesome movie of awesomely awesome awesomeness that you should totally see" that you deliberately chose not to see?

Never had anybody say it like that to me before. Whenever somebody recommended a movie to me they would simply tell me it is worth seeing, that I might like it and would hint at what's in it rather then spoil it for me. Whomever is trying to sell you on to seeing "Super 8" sounds like they're in shock or something. Maybe that's why they can't even try to properly 'spit it out' for you so you can understand what they mean.

Couple of days ago me and my friend watched Evil Dead 2. I heard it was one of them "cult movies", but I tell you folks, I did not expect what I saw. It was 84 minutes of complete madness. I don't think I could have enjoyed the movie if I watched it alone, but the time and the beers I had in the process totally did it. I cried of laugher. That was some of the most random s**t I've ever seen. Overall rating?
Movie without beer: 6.5/10.
Movie with beer 9/10.

Arrrghh, heresy, etc. But seriously, that film is good either way, but definitely better with beer. What I don't get are the fanbois of the Evil Dead series who say the first one's the best. That is some slow-ass horror movie, which only picks up towards the end.

Well, the director is J.J. Abrams who has directed some of my favorite and most hated movies including: Forever Young, Armageddon, Cloverfield, and Star Trek (2009). So it either going to be, pardon me, awesome or a piece o' shit.

The bit of plot I read (didn't read it all to avoid spoilers) sounds kinda interesting. I personally like wierd sci-fi/paranormal movies so I might give it a try.

The cast consists of a bunch of people that I either never heard of or, if I did, they didn't impact my psyche enough to retain their names in my memory bank.

oh man... Evil Dead 2... one of the best movies ever. Army of Darkness too. Bruce Campbell is the man. Evil Dead 1 seems like it was more of a serious attempt at a horror movie with a very low budget. Then they realized the funny off the wall bits were what made it great and remade it as Evil Dead 2 then made it even more awesome with Army of Darkness.

Havent seen Super 8. Seems kinda meh

I didn't heard of Super 8 before, have no idea what it is about and since other replies mostly consist in "Evil Dead 2" which I don't know either I can only say I never had such annoying conversation with anyone and I couln't be less interested in watching a movie with so little information.

OK. Just finished watching it. It was a pretty cool little movie.
It isn't god's gift or anything, but I'd say it's worth watching.

Read the first three paragraphs of Roger Ebert's reviews. That will usually turn you on or off. Don't read more than 3 paragraphs though, because on his website he gives away spoilers.

I'm one of those "fanbois" who sees the first one as the best. ;p It's got creeping suspense, shocking gore, amazing camera work start to finish, amazing sound design... It's just such a remarkable movie and a true horror masterpiece.

But I love 'em all. Sometimes I even like the second one the best, sometimes the third. I love 'em all almost equally, but generally I dig the first the most. Few movies have the kind of mood and artistic greatness as the first, only fit to sit alongside such greats as John Carpenter's The Thing, Dario Argento's Suspiria, and Tobe Hoober's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

As for movies I keep being told I ought to see and I just don't care enough to really check it out... Inception. Everyone kept talking about it, and my brother kept trying to get me to see it. Never did. :p Now no one's asked me for a couple months, which is good. I'll get around to it eventually.

...Tree Tentacle Rape...

That scene is so... confusing.

I hold the second film to be better, as it has a better grasp of what it wants to be. It has a lot of the horror elements of the first film, and a bit of the tongue in cheek wit of the third film. It's a happy meeting of both bookend films.

Evil Dead series was golden using the first as a horror movie, transitioning from horror to comedy in the second and lastly a comedy in the third
