Title: Video of Castlevania IV Beta
Post by: Nagumo on February 22, 2012, 06:44:16 AM
In case anybody is still interested in how the beta looks like, you can see the first level here. It's run on an emulator:

I must say that I'm slightly disappointed. Though I wasn't sure what I was expecting.

Fluttershy - Dr. Fluttershy expected that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV50ZhUMWds#ws)

This.

I still remember that failtastic ad that looked like it used Beta Footage.

"Fight across a bridge, THROUGH A ROOM! and a STABLE!"

Best beta of all time will probably always be Sonic 2.

I am nost sure, if I getting the point of this.
Besides, how he can recreate demo version of the game, if there is no leaked version of the demo. If anything the end result will a SCV4, but stripped out of some things, to make it feel incomplete.

I think he owns the beta himself. Also, people are just curious how the beta looks like, so I'm sure there are plenty of people who want to play it on an emulator.

There's no way he has the beta. He'd dump the ROM instead of going through all this trouble. You can already tell there's major difference sin how the beta's level were than this.

I call major bullshit. It looks like shit too.

The beta levels seem very similiair to me actually. In the tv commercial you can see a glimpse of the level that is shown in the video and it looks exactly the same. Also, it looks indeed like shit but since we're talking about a beta that doesn't really say much about its legitimacy.

I have no idea how one makes a ROM of a game so I don't know if it makes sense what this person is doing.

Also, what's up with those weird samurai enemies?

To make ROM one must have original cart with the game. Then dump its contents into PC via special device.
It means in order to have ROM of the game, "beta recreator" should have beta cart in his possesion. Which I doubt, he does.

Personally, I 'd like to play in beta version of any Castlevania. Especially the ones that were never released or drastically changed, like Bloodlines, CV64, CV32X and Ressurection.

Looks to me as though the sprites have just been taken straight from the youtube video of the beta.

"remaking" a beta....

what.

Thats not how that works...

Looks to me as though the sprites have just been taken straight from the youtube video of the beta.
Seems like that. Im pretty sure, beta or not, Konami would never allow it's Simon sprite to look that shitty under like, the threat of death or something.

Wow. That looked pretty dumb.

So that's why Simon and some other stuff looks so ugly...I didn't watch thus video carefully, but certainly, sprites gave me a strange impression. As if them, or video as a whole, was very blurry and discolored.

Pretty sure the background randomly changing to Windows Vista is not part of the authentic beta experience.

I suppose it's possible that he is only using the tv commercial as a reference for recreating stages. It shows quite a lot from the first stage. The sprites he used seem of about the same quality too. Not sure how he is planning to do the others.

My guess is once he gets past the stuff there's some video footage for, he'll probably make up partially different level design for much of the rest of the game if the project continues. There's no reason to believe any available information exists about what the majority of the game looked like in beta outside Konami's vaults and the developers' brains. So unless he has gained access to either one of those...

Still, it's good to see such a raging interest in during-development material for older games. Stuff like that always fascinates me, but there's never enough of it out there unless a beta cart gets leaked or something. And even then, the copy leaked is often from too close to release for it to be a really interesting alternate version that shows a lot of changes the developers made along the way.

Also, at least to me, it does kinda have value even if he does end up just making up much of the level design. It partially evokes the same feeling you'd get if you really were seeing someone play through a beta copy of the game (well, except for the damn XP pop ins :)), even if it isn't one. It also has a somewhat creepy and ethereal air about it with those discolored, artifact-laden sprites and only partially reminiscent level design. In addition to CV4 already having a somewhat creepy atmosphere in places of course.

There have been reported instances where betas of Castlevania betas have found their way to collector's hands, so it would have been possible that person owned it. I believe betas are often handed out to testers who often sell them or keep for themselves. Though it's very possible the CVIV beta has always been kept under wraps. There is barely any information about these betas so it's impossible to say for sure.

From the looks of things it's being done using gamemaker as the logo is seen during the brief moments when the gamescreen pauses and loads. While someone replicating a lost Beta version of my favorite game is indeed an interesting venture, the latter half of stage 1 was just too long and monotonous, full of a useless repetition level layout. And whatever happened to the whipswing?? Even that was in the original Beta video. The midi he selected was also not a very good choice for stage 1. sure it's Simon's theme but there are better versions out there and ones that loop too.

Given how the the sprites look ripped from the low-quality video hosted here, I highly doubt he has the rom. Again, he'd dump it if he did.
