Macross Plus is like the greatest anime ever, and I'm currently going through The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, which is fantastic with its mix of drama and action and sci-fi and all this coolness. Really wish the movie(s) for the original series would get released here.

I need to buy Macross Plus at some point. I love how the villain is for all intents and purposes an evil psychotic Hatsune Miku.

Yeah and then in Macross Frontier they just totally gloss over her treachery. An indirect, passing mention, but otherwise she was just one of the great pop stars.  :-X

I don't actually OWN much. I do own some, though not most of them. ... I won't say anymore.

What I for(i=0;i<$0F;i++) {really} want is an English subtitled edition of the full GeGeGe No Kitarou series 2 or series 3. If i had to settle for series 1, fine, but I like 2 and 3 better. Don't like the latest one.

I really don't have much anime sans Cowboy Bebop, Nadesico, and Outlaw Star. But then again, they're the best out there. I get all Gunlord when someone mentions Aisha Clan Clan-chan...

My hombre Puwexil, on the other hand, is the master of Bleach.

Aaaaand it's just the movie version; hoping for an inexpensive re-release.

Demons 'n' shit! That's what I dig about it. I just really like all the weirdness. It's not a complex plot, but neither is it "let's make porno the focus and throw in a story as an afterthought."

That would be like saying the Hanzo the Razor film series is just an excuse to have an officer of the law rape and interrogate wicked women with his famed, mighty schlong.

Which it is!

But there's other cool stuff going on as well.

Er... Yeah.

Fist of the North Star is neat.

Yes I understand them demon and manbeast stuff and all but yes never got the story because I never really watched much of it and if I did I would have to really watch it when nobody is looking  :-[. If I did I would be able to speak about it a bit better, yet I know for a fact that it's bloody as hell people get ripped apart, and yes fist of the north star is complete manliness.

I fell in love with North Star because of the movie, and Toyoo Ashida is a total badass—Vampire Hunter D is one of the coolest movies ever and puts him high on the "favorite anime directors" list, and I'm sad to have just learned that he passed away this past summer.

I was surprised by how violent the TV show was. I figured, "No way could they show this level of violence in the series," but they do show it just in interesting self-censored ways. It's still insanely graphic even if all you're seeing is a silhouette of warping, exploding heads.

Man, hyperviolence is so awesome.

Urotsukidouji is more about the ultraviolence. The manga was about the plot and sex. They totally warped the manga when they made the anime. The manga involved tentacled lizards having sex with girls (because tentacles don't have to be censored, true story). The guy that made the anime stated nothing stirs up people more than sex and violence, so he got the bright idea to throw them in together and add creepy demons; yes, some of the demons in Urotsukidouji are fucking scary -- the high-pitced voice one (in the dub) that wobbles his head creeped me out so bad for years.
(click to show/hide)

The next movie was a sequel but took place during the first one. It introduced Muni Hausen II, the son of a mad scientist and occultist in Nazi German who tried to summon the Demon King (not to be confused with the Demon Lord) to counter the Overfiend.
(click to show/hide)

The third movie I never watched much and don't remember well. It introduces the Makemono race (demon beasts), newly spawned in the aftermath of Nagumo's destruction.
(click to show/hide)

The fourth movie follows Buju and his surviving comrades en route to Osaka when they encounter a city run by children. The children have psychic powers (part of the new world) and adults are used only for procreation before being discarded brutally. A couple of teens struggling to avoid being executed as adults ask Buju to save them. Buju defeats the ruling brothers and saves the teens.

The fifth movie was scrapped, but was supposed to show that the Overfiend wasn't the real Overfiend, but part of a new race of hermaphrodites. The real Overfiend was going to use this new race of hermaphrodites to replace all the previous races (human, demon, man-beast, demon-beast) and create a new universe. This got scrapped, as I said.

Shinji Makoto makes me want to slit my wrists. His movies are so sad. Beautiful, but sad.

Haibane Renmei is another good anime. By the same guy that did Serial Experiments Lain. It might seem girly and kinda aimless, but near the end it gets very depressing. My ex-fiance and I watched half the series over two or three days and at the halfway point she was bawling her eyes out (there's a sad part in the middle of the series). I was hoping we wouldn't break up until after she watched the end, at which point she would be welcome to kill herself.

Because VIC MIGNOGNA. That's why.

Also, watch The Wallflower in English. Seriously, Hanna Alcorn completely steals the whole show as Sunako, and Vic Mignogna, Chris Patton, Josh Grell, Jessica Boone, and Greg Ayres round out the cast amazingly.

Cowboy Bebop requires no explanation on my part. It's just awesome no matter what language you watch it in.

Also, Miyazaki's movies have an amazing track record of doing well with American celbrity voice actors. That tends not to work, yet somehow it often works with his films.

For me it's Johnny yong bosch.

Style that show is it just comes on so late.

Castle in the sky is my favorite with howl's moving castle a second also anime needs more big name actors the only other anime I can think of is afro samurai.

Also since were are talking about anime what hair color do all of you prefer and the style of hair that goes along with it for instance I like short brown hair, sliver does not matter if long or short, and long blue hair for girls, for guys well I guess I don't care as much for them :P

Compared to Japanese Spike, I can't stand American Spike. D: Former has all sorts of range of voice and emotion, whereas the latter only has one setting: "coooool." Spike is a cool, laid-back character, but he can get into a frenzy, and the English voice doesn't really portray that well.

Steven Blum's a good voice actor, but srsly, I love the Japanese' sense of "overdrama."

I 'm glad some mentioned Trigun as I had forgotten about that one too. That was also a good watch. Unfortunately as the series went by it got more and more serious which kinda choked out the humor a bit. I do notice that this is a problem for a lot of anime out there. They start hot at the beginning and then down the road it becomes a radical departure from what made it so good & funny at the start. Another series that I love to watch is "Those who Hunt Elves". I've only seen two seasons so far and what I really like about it is the humor doesn't stop or degrade as in the aforementioned Trigun. It is wickedly funny from start to finish and all the American references added in for the dubbed versions has enhanced it somewhat it for us westerners. Either that or it was done intentionally by the people who made it.
Title: Re: The Anime Thread
Post by: Abnormal Freak on March 02, 2012, 04:42:26 AM
IMO, Trigun wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is if it were just carefree all the time. You come to learn just how badass and serious of a character Vash is underneath all the buffoonery.

I bumped into this anime last night and am considering watching it. It seems pretty typical and crawls at a snail's pace LIKE ALMOST EVERY ANIME TV SERIES, but the perverted bits are wonderful. Particularly this whole section here:

Heaven's Lost Property - 1 - A Full-frontal Hero Arises in the World! (SUB) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNFG-qBZOm0#noexternalembed-ws)

Vash was always a badass, there's no denying that. Even when he acted like a buffoon it was not without purpose and it can be seen all throughout the show. However in terms of being carefree that's not how I ever saw the show even when it was funny. I just fund it a shame when the comedy just dropped off the face of the earth in the latter half of the series. There were one or two funny moments but they were sparse at best and did not do enough to help smooth over the dead seriousness of the evolving climax. I guess I'm just one of those people who expect a kind of consistency in a story, anime or live action show. Consistency is just as important as Continuity. Both are integral to the series/stories they represent and help keep them in focus. Unlike continuity, consistency does allow for some 'wiggle room' but not too much or everything just falls apart. Fortunately Trigun didn't fall apart so to speak, but it came damn near close. The one thing I hated about Trigun was the character Knives. He just pissed me right the f**k off and I wished death on him right at the start. For me, I like villains who are interesting and are always a pleasure to see come back because you get such an enjoyment out of them...Knives isn't that kind of villain. He's just a dark Megalomaniacal psychopath who's hell-bent on the extinction of humanity in order to create his so-called perfect race. Pretty hard to do that when there are no women of his kind around to knock up. The character Wolfwood was also interesting and I thought that he complimented Vash's character quite nicely. Sort of the 'Wanted due' of the series. And having both Milly and Meryl there to accompany them completed the quarto. It's a shame he died though.

Post by: Abnormal Freak on March 02, 2012, 10:27:43 PM
Something tells me you wouldn't like the dramatic shifts in tone that occur in the movies Vamp and From Dusk Till Dawn. :p

Trigun getting more serious toward the end is no different to me than Cowboy Bebop and Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight dropping the silly stuff for the last few episodes and going into total melodrama mode. That's just kind of the anime formula, I guess, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
Title: Re: The Anime Thread
Post by: Kale on March 02, 2012, 11:33:24 PM
Personally didn't like Trigun. I never liked the whole I'm a silly protagonist hiding a secret power thing. Its lame. The first couple of episodes were enjoyable, but it got worst, and I don't think I can even say slowly... roughly half way through I just got tired of it and quit watching.
