KONY 2012 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc#ws)
Have you guys seen this yet?
-
So it took celebrities getting on board for regular folks to give a shit about Uganda? How typical of us. This has been going on for decades not only in Uganda, BUT IN OUR OWN BACKYARDS. Since we're all so "aware" now, why don't we take our asses out & volunteer our time somewhere, perhaps at a soup kitchen or local orphanage? Because we're just "armchair social activists" that'd much sooner donate a dollar to an online charity or "text DONATE to 1435 etc." that seems legit (i remember several of these popping up soon after the quake in Haiti, and half of them were phony since those who "cared" pocketed the cash for themselves). There's a foster child or young girl becoming a sex slave this very second right here in the good ol' USofA.
Sorry to rant, but this has been all over my FB this morning, all it takes is a couple months or less for people to forget this movement & focus their time on the next important topic that we must throw money at. Seems like you can't trust shit nowadays.

Read the thread. The people who made this documentary are a very shady bunch, and very little of the donations actually go towards helping kids.

If the purpose of the video is to make people aware of who Joseph Kony is, then they have succeeded.
1. I didn't know who Joseph Kony is.
2. After watching the video, I knew.
3. Afterwards, I was compelled to make people more aware of who Joseph Kony is, because the more people know, the better.
I think the campaign to bring awareness has succeeded in the same way "Arab Spring" movements have succeeded.
-
The video succeeded with steps one and two for me, but not quite step 3...Still, I guess it couldn't hurt to make a lot of people aware of him, though that alone isn't going to do much unless it's matched with some form of action, whether political pressure, monetary contributions to Kony's opponents, or whatever. At least thats what I think :/

This has been going on for decades not only in Uganda, BUT IN OUR OWN BACKYARDS.
I heard a fellow in my university who lives in Mexico. The guy tried to explain to me, in very bad English, that life in his country is intolerable. It was quite a shock for me. I knew that life in Mexico is quite bad, but I didn't know how bad. He told me about the horrible level of education (one teacher teaching all subjects, if the teacher is ill, school is canceled), the corruption of society and police ("See this?" shows me a video, "see this kid selling drugs on the street? police cars stops. Kid pays them money, police car goes away.") and obviously, the never ending drug-lord wars ("see all those dead people on the street? see? gangsters kill them for no reason. Just so ppl will be afraid").
People are hopeless. There is no way you can get a decent job without good connections ("Only way to get money, is if you go to drugs. but if you go to drugs, it's over. You're dead man")
And shit, I'm thinking, all that stuff is not happening in Africa. It's happening miles from the US borders. ("And it's not just Mexico, see? Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, all the same, see?") God damn it. How can you fix those places? How can you bring order to those places that have been that way for decades?
-
If you want to stop Kony and for whatever reason can't just kill him, make the Africans stop having babies. Eventually he'll run out of kids to abduct and his army will collapse. He'll have to move off the continent. If he tries that in Israel, the US will be all over him in a heartbeat.

Theouaegis, how about maybe editing that last reply more, someone could easily get pissed and complain. They could even yell racist for that in this day and age.
OR, I could edit it out completely if you want. :P
-
Edited.
You can yell racist for anything you want; doesn't mean it's actually racist. Some countries are just better at some things than other countries. I doubt Germans make better wine than the French, but the French probably don't make better brats than the Germans. Schnitzel and merlot will bring the world together.
My spell checker says "merlot" isn't a word. I've been selling typos at work for the last six years!
-
It's a matter of taste, really. Eventually, it seems like it all comes down to first world problems. People couldn't care less about what doesn't concern them.
<3 those asshole mottos.

Before I knew who Kony was (still haven't watched the video, mind you), I thought this video was a presidential campaign ad by a guy who was just NOW getting his money together. Y'know. Because of the title.

In my country there's a very popular journalist who had several TV programs and newspaper columns, and at a certain point he was the anchorman of the most popular TV news broadcast. Politicians often flamed him for being overly critical and using the news for promoting his political views. So this year, the guy finally said, fuck that, it's about time I go to politics because everybody else sucks. So he started his own political party and said he's gonna fix EVERYTHING.
And the politicians' response was:

Bitch please, you don't have any political views.

As guilty (because my life is probably drastically better, yet I can still complain) as those videos with the celebrities talking about starving kids and such... it makes me laugh. Those celebrities are probably not doing shit to help either.
Not to mention, I'm big on non intervention. I prefer to keep my hands out of other people's problem unless I'm directly affected. Wait til I'm rich, then I'll think about it.

Another thing I should mention is the shit going on in Syria. Sure you all heard about it. President Bashar Assad is massacring his people for over a year now. He already murdered dozens of thousands of people demonstrating against him, many more are arrested and tortured. And the worst thing about it? International intervention could only make it worse. Assad is fighting for his life. The thing is, Syria is a fragile state where a majority of Sunni Muslims are controlled by a minority of Alawis, a Syrian religious minority who are hated by the majority of Muslims and considered not-Muslims by some. If Assad falls, it would not only mean death for him, but for his entire people. What decision could be made? hmmm.
