Title: Castlevania newbie
Post by: theshiz on April 29, 2012, 10:39:29 PM
Hi All.  I've always loved the castlevania seies even though I really only played castlevania 4 and SOTN back in the day.  I've recently got an interest in playing the old games and collecting them.  have been seeking out the original games with the box and instructions.  as I'm sure you guys know this gets expensive quick.  think I dropped $500+ already but I now have a decent collection.  i like playing games on the original system, luckily I already have all the old consoles.  so today I've been playing some castlevania 1.  i never really played this game back in the day.  after a few hours I'm able to get to death and get him down to half life but I still need some work.  My brother really enjoyed bloodlines back in the day so i've been playing that too.  I have to say I really enjoy it.  it is really forgiving with jumps and I like having a special move and the alt weapons are pretty cool and it's nice having a more expensive option with them and the music is awesome.  I'm on stage 4 of bloodlines and it's getting fairly tough but with the password feature it's only so hard.  i'm trying to get the password with the full continues.  I might give this game a break and play some castlevania 4 because I absolutely love that game.  the music, the atmosphere of it, it's so awesome.

Anyway I look forward to reading through some of the threads here and exploring the castlevania series.  I've sort of lost interest in modern games lately and I'm excited to explore these games.  I'm an old school gamer at heart.  love arcade games and 2d games for the most part.  the modern game that I have played the most is super meat boy.  I also play a little gears and need for speed.  and I have some arcade cabinets that get some play when I get friends out, mostly NBA jam.  like 2d fighters too.  I don't know if i'll be able to get into the 3d castlevanias but I have plenty of 2d to keep me busy for a while.  I did love shadow of the colossus and I hear the new game has some elements from that game.  but with new games I like innovation not imitation so we'll see.  as it is I think it's cool this community exists and I plan on spending some time looking through these threads.

castlevania forever!

ps.  if anyone is in the Richmond, VA area I throw kick ass game parties every few months.  hit me up if you're in the area and interested.

Tim

castlevania 4 is as awesome as I remember.  i died a few cheap deaths but once you know about the cheapness it's not too bad.

So recently i put together a classic setup on swtichboxes.  i have nes/snes/ps2/genesis/dreamcast/saturn/gamecube/n64/atari/x360/jaguar/3do/sega master system on a big CRT.  it's great how cheap the old stuff is if you watch craigslist and whatnot.  castlevania 1 bombed on me a few times, not sure if it's the cart of the NES.  i played some contra and super mario and it didn't bomb so I think it might be the cart.

any of you guys played VS castlevania?  i have a VS cabinet with super mario/excitebike/rbi baseball but don't have the VS castlevania arcade board, so I ordered the NES cart from these guys.  I think it's cool they are putting the VS arcade games out as NES carts so anyone can play them.  I have the super mario one and it is just like the VS arcade game.  I'm curious to check out the VS castlevania.  I think it's basically a harder version of the NES one.

I used to play Versus Castlevania all the time back in the day at a restaurant my family used to eat at. Sadly that was over 15 years ago and they no longer carry it :(  It was badass game, having NES CV in a arcade cabinet was totally sweet!  I've never seen another one anywhere else.

was it playchoice or VS?  playchoice had a little menu where you could select between multiple games and I think the games were pretty much exactly like their NES counterpart.  VS was a little different, it still had a lot of games you could get for it but you can only have one game running at once and had to swap the game board to play something different.  I like the controls on the cabinet, it feels a lot different than using a NES pad.

Glad to hear of your recent delving into the Castlevania series. ;D Like you, Super Castlevania IV and Symphony of the Night were pretty much the only two I knew well for the longest time. (Played the former at my cousin's house when it was brand new and I was only five years old. Sweeeeeet! Been a favorite ever since.) Then Castlevania on the N64 came out, which I saw demoed on a GXTV (http://consoleation.wordpress.com/2011/08/01/consoleation-time-machine-the-return-of-the-gxtv/) at a Best Buy. Around that time I had saved up a good amount of money working for my dad (I was 13) and so bought an N64, a GXTV, and Castlevania, and was in gaming heaven.

My love for that game made me want to play all the other ones, which I had a little bit of experience with on emulators. (I mastered Bloodlines on a keyboard.) Picked up a Genesis model 3 (sucks) for fifteen bucks at a closing out KB Toys plus some leftover Genesis games at a Toys "R" Us (the Majesco reprints, bleh), among them Bloodlines, and close to the same time picked up the three NES games plus both NES Contra games from FuncoLand for fairly cheap. And also not long after when I had picked up a Game Boy Color, my mom and brother got me Castlevania Legends as a belated birthday gift—which was bought from EBX. (Soooo many stores I wish were still around.) Bliss, I tell ya. Bliss.

So yeah, I was in Castlevania heaven and it's been great playing all these games. I've played extensively every game in the series up to and including Order of Ecclesia (save for Vampire Killer) and I could play the games over and over again forever, ha!

Glad you're enthused for the series and hope you get to track down all the good stuff.

Welcome to the CVDF.  You get bonus points for owning a Jaguar.  I wish I was within driving distance of Richmond.  Sounds like a fun party.

Welcome to the forums theshiz! Nice setup you got there, especially with the smallest TV working its way up to the biggest.

thanks guys.  i actually remember picking up the jaguar on closeout at kb toy store for $20.  i have some crappy fighting game for it and a football game that should be good for a laugh during parties if I can get anyone to play them.  old consoles are kind of a pain sometimes.  castlevania 1 bombed on me again yesterday, but i still think it's fun to play the games like that instead of emulation.  I don't know how dedicated I'll be in playing all the games but I definitely want to play though castlevania 3, chronicles, rebirth, and some of the gameboy advance/ds games, so I have plenty to play right now.

It was definitely VS because I remember the logo and it was Castlevania 1.  There were other games you could pick as well but I don't remember what they were just that they were other NES games.  Also that is pretty fucking sweet gaming setup you got mad props!!!

Welcome!

The crappy fighting game was probably "Way of the Warrior".  Does it have a three-sided YinYang, with the third color being blood red and dripping? :P
Enjoy your stay here.

If it was Jaguar it was probably Kasumi Ninja. Way of the Warrior was for the 3DO.
Jaguar was awesome back in the day, cyber morph, checkered flag, and best of all... AvP!!!!!!!

I remember that image in a game magazine. I always thought of that game as riding on the success of Motal Kombat.

My bad, yeah I sometimes confuse 3DO and Jaguar.  You know... the 'did not do so well' consoles...

There are actually some fantastic games for the Jag.  No need leaving it for laughs only; pick up Alien vs Predator, Tempest 2000, Syndicate, Zool 2, and the best version of Wolfenstein 3D, and you'll see the Jag in a whole new light.

I never got to play Wolfenstein on Jaguar but i did have it for 3D0 and it was badass, had upgraded graphics and a new orchestrated soundtrack.  Oh and I forgot about tempest 2000 that was one my favorites as well.

I started playing castlevania chronicles.  the game gets pretty brutal.  I'm on the clock tower/werewolf section.  even on easy it's no joke with those gears.  this game makes me appreciate castlevania 4 even more.  to me that's a perfect game.  the intro, the music, the controls, the atmosphere, the fair feeling difficulty level, the ending.  it's a masterpiece.
