Controls are bogus if you wanna use a mouse. Very limited customization, no separate left and right strafing, no "always run," and so on.
Best option is just to use the keyboard. Reminds me of how I used to play FPSs...
The game's also on sale on Steam for the next 11 hours or something, available for a little over a buck. Also a bundle pack where you can get it, Spear of Destiny, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein for a little over three bucks.
Anyway, when Wolf 3D first came out, my ass was blown off. Played it at my cousin's house. Never experienced anything like it. If you've never played it, now's your chance.

I gave this title a try when it was out for the SNES. Needless to say...I got lost. Right now I'm playing through the PS3 Wolfenstein 3D. Hehe, dude still has his classic funky eyebrows.

Still play this on DOSbox fairly often. Actually still play a lot of old DOS games - lots of good old game memories: Doom and all it's variants (of course), Tyrian 2000, Descent, Beneath A Steel Sky, Dungeon Master, Captain Comic, Commander Keen, Duke Nukem (before the 3D) - lots of great games came out on PC-DOS.

you forgot about Star Wars: Dark Forces. That game came out at around the same time as the aforementioned.

i remember playing this when i was a little guy. It's still great. I've been playing it on and off ever since I got the Platinum edition of Return to Castle Wolfenstein way back in 2004, as it was one of the bonuses.
I also remember when DOOM was a hardcore game for mature audiences. Good times...
Also Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight is still one of the best fps I've played.

Got any Heretic or Hexen in the mix? ;D Those are some classics. Super pissed that my dad threw away my copy of the former, though... Probably looked at the title and said, "That's unChristian!" and chucked it. That was a long time ago...
I suspect he threw it away, anyway. Game just disappeared one day. So did my copy of Space Quest 6, roughly around the same time. Apparently jokes about jock straps were too crude for a 12-year-old... (I remember him complaining about that particular issue, and he must have had a fit when my friends and I all gathered round the computer to play and laugh about the game.)
And maaaaan, Descent... If any DOS FPS ever needed a re-release on a modern console, that is it. XBLA's good for old FPSs. DOOM I and II, Duke 3D, Wolfenstein...
Well, no, Quake deserves a console re-release more than anything 'cos it's pretty much the greatest FPS ever, but Descent is close—and it gets bonus points for being, to my knowledge and experience, the first fully 3D, polygonal FPS ever made—and they really capitalized on that by letting you go IN ALL DIRECTIONS! Crazy game.
Descent II is no slouch either, but Descent 3... Eh.

Yeah, DOOM certainly blew me away unlike anything else. Huge advancements on what could be done.
I remember Dark Forces being a lotta fun. Gotta pick that up. Think the PSX version's supposed to be pretty good and that's on PSN.
'Course, we've still got an old tower running DOS and Windows 98. I'm sure I could pick up the PC original for real cheap. Reminds me I gotta go through the Thief series again soon... I love me some old-school FPSs, but I love me some Thief even more. Plus those folks did System Shock 2, which I never finished and would like to play through.

I used to rock the PSX version of Dark Forces back in the day, never played it on PC. I'd imagine it was probably the better one.

Higher res, for sure, though I think I heard something about the PSX game having some exclusive content or something it did better than the original.
Or maybe I just heard it was a faithful port and I made up all that stuff.

I know SW: DF PSX has a debug mode to access all sorts of stuff. A lifesaver for me many times over.

You mofoz got any thoughts on Blood and Shadow Warrior? I've always, always wanted to play those games since they came out, but I never had a chance to.
Actually, Shadow Warrior I may have played, or it was some other game. I roughly remember some feudal Japan type setting, with all these wooden or bamboo cages holding like...dead dudes D: And the enemies were pretty grisly, and there was lava on the ground in this one room.
That was so long ago. Hardly remember it.

Wow! Sailor Moon carries Uzi clips. Where was she keeping them and how come we never saw this in Sailor Moon!? She could've wasted all the evil Youma by just spraying them full of hot lead. I'm sure you can picture her holding two Uzi guns, sporting a pair of Aviator shades and shooting up everything ;D
Even Magical Girls need help from some good 'ol fashioned military-grade firepower.

Found out that Blood plus all its expansions are on GOG.com. Downloaded it ($6) and am enjoying the hell out of this game. I wonder why 3D Realms dropped development on it to focus on Shadow Warrior; perhaps for the better, since Blood seems like the better game.
I hope Shadow Warrior gets a GOG release. I fucking hate Steam, so fuck Steam and a potential release there.

Played both as they were essential for people who got Doom in the first place, but also liked a more fantasy based backdrop. Actually I haven't used DosBox for Doom/Heretic/Hexen for a while as the ZDoom sourceport does everything for those games now.... and a lot better.

One of the best games I've played in the genre, seriously.

I just found out that Monolith, who did Blood, also did Aliens versus Predator 2, which was a helluva lotta fun when it came out, and Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, which I've been eying for a while and looks like a lot of fun so I'll have to get it off GOG soon.

Man, I'm going to be a first-person shooter fiend. Haven't been this excited for the genre in years—and go figure, I'm getting excited playing older games. Only FPSs in the last ten years to really impact me were Serious Sam, BioShock, and Duke Nukem Forever—and no wonder as they all pretty much play like old FPSs.

SHOGO was okay. I never got to play multiplayer very much, but when I did get to it wasn't all that spectacular. Lots of pitfalls in the mecha combat and the on-foot multiplayer was fun. Single player campaign wasn't bad. The game was kinda easy but took me a few tries to beat the last boss (one of those "hit-the-shield-generator-then-hit-the-boss" battles. And the sewer level creeped me out. Fucking cat needed to shut up! The mecha weapons were nothign special, but the on-foot weapons were fun. Bouncing grenade gun ftw! So OP in multiplayer. The enemies in the mech combat were pretty cool. And you can get stuck in the first couple levels if you kill the other characters! :D The jokes are pretty tame but it's a fun game to play through at least once.
AND THE OPENING CREDITS!! I listened to this song so much back in the day. Think I have the full version somewhere burned to a CD.

Edit: Ok, sorry. I said the mech weapons weren't that special. I completely forgot about the missile launcher (3-way missiles with semi-random trails) and that fucking BFG (forgot what it's called). Even in multiplayer it's a fucking instakill. Turns the enemy mech into a fucking charred skeletal frame. That gun was fucking epic! And like I said, in Multiplayer the mech levels are epic fun!

I played the shit out of Shadow Warrior and Blood back in the day. Blood is still one of my all-time favorite FPS games, so many awesome horror movie references and the evil carnivals. Total awesomeness. Shadow Warrior is like Duke Nukem 3D in Japan. Both games used the build engine which was developed for Duke Nukem 3D. Blood was made by Monolith.

I beat all of Blood including the Monolith-developed expansion. Currently working on the Cryptic Passage expansion. So much fun.
And yeah, totally a lot of horror film references. What I adore is that of the references, something like 70% or more refer to the Evil Dead series, heh. All the one-liners and such, and also the mini-yous that break out of the mirror, and I'm pretty sure the clock ticking and girl singing "Ring Around the Rosie" in this song is a nod to the clock and the "We're gonna get you" lullaby from the first movie.

And man, that music... THAT MUSIC...! Love the ethereal synths in this song, and the other tracks are all top-notch as well.
Only bummer is that the One Unit Whole Blood pack from GOG.com doesn't appear to have the MIDI music. CD tracks are great, but for a replay, it'd be fun to hear the MIDI tunes.

D'Oh somehow failed to see the second page, was just going to recommend Descent 1 + Descent 2 on GoG to you but I see you're already familiar with it. Which is good, I'm glad it's getting a lot more recognition as it's a great distribution service. So many classic games all set up to run on modern systems, and no DRM to keep you from backing up your game or playing it any time anywhere you want to, ahhh.

Hmmm I've never played the Blood expansion. I need to get my hands on it. I didn't even know there was one or I just forgot over the years... LOL. On the matter of Descent, I played that game on PSX years ago and fucking hated it. Did anyone play PO'ed on PSX? That game was hilarious, I remember literally shooting walking asses and other crazy enemies. You played as a chef. It was also an FPS, weird as hell, but good fun :D

Serious Sam Gold is possibly my favorite game of all time. Well, that or Sly Cooper 2 ;D or maybe a threeway tie between those and the CV series in general. (Who can pick just one CV? Well, not me anyway lol.)
Also funny and kind of sad thing about Shogo, it was supposed to be revolutionary and it was getting really good reviews. Some calling it one of the best games of the year, and one I remember even proclaimed it the best FPS yet created. (I wouldn't have gone that far personally as most if not all Doom Engine games and many others that came before Shogo are better, but I keep in mind it was new and shiny at the time.) Then a little under 2 months later Half-Life was released and Shogo was instantly forgotten.

I certainly hadn't heard about Shogo. Think I saw the box art in stores once or twice, but Half-Life certainly crossed paths with me. (It was kind of unavoidable; bought the Game of the Year Edition all those years back.)

If you guys like classic FPS then you should definitely check out Rise of The Triad. I can't believe I didn't bring this one up earlier. This game is sick, you get about a dozen different types of missile launchers, firebombs, flamethrowers, you can fly, you can trip on magic mushrooms, turn into a dog and maul people, and even use the hand of god! It has some design similarities to Wolfenstein 3D as I believe it was originally going to be a sequel but for some reason they lost the rights or something. A very cool game and one that any classic FPS fan should try.
