So yeah, I'm starting my journey into the 3D realm with the only 3D vania games of great interest to me at the moment (though being the vania fan that I am, I'll probably emulate the PS2 games eventually soon too?). And I'm really curious as to what vania fans think is the best game of the two to be played first, then second, for one who hasn't played either yet?
Yes, most say the second (LoD) is the best and all that stuff, but; a) you don't start with a whip guy for entire first playthrough (I assume it's entire if not most playthrough?) and thus it wouldn't feel quite like the complete vania experience for first timers + you'd figure you'd want the first playthrough to be as much vania like as possible; b) if you start with the best, then playing the not so best makes the not so best seem even worse (though vice versa can be said too to diminish the best possible first time experience), and even to the point where you might not even be able to stand to play it anymore? And; c) well, hmm? c?... how about that the first one game first and the second one came second and the developers kinda developed it as a somewhat sequel to the first one. And I'm sure expected some to most players would return for the second one. Also that some players may be too OCD about things like playing things in order and what not...; d) whatever other reasons you can come up with.
So yeah, I wanna to see how vania fans that played both of these games would recommend this for new players of these games to start with? And theirs reasons as to why they think it's best this way? And plus, as a bonus, you should state which one you played first and how that worked out for you?
-
Just play both.
But I always play LoD unless I wanna play as Simon Belmont Reinhardt Schneider or Maria Renard Carrie Fernandez (cameo alternate costumes for Reinhardt and Carrie are only available in CV64, not in LoD).
-
Just play both.
Well yeah, that's the idea, but which one should be played first for best overall experience for a first timer to both of these games? So for those that are first starting with both these, they may have a clear idea of what action to take for best results by reading this topic.
I also forgot to mention one. While playing both back to just just for the beginning (up to the Castle, and just a bit inside... and I do have a rough idea of which I may want to stick with for first play so far...). I noticed the first one seemed for sure harder. And not just because it's harder play as the whip guy over the wolf guy either. The way the game was set up and the amount of more enemies the first game throws at you in more then the second game so far... So I have to ask; Is the whip guy's quest in the second game equally as hard, less or more? And do you think starting with the easier game for first playthrough might be a better or worse idea?

Geez, dude. Do you ever BUY any games?

I'd say play the first one first. It has content not in the second (different first level, exclusive costumes, voiceover narration that got excluded from Legacy of Darkness probably due to cart space), and if you play through that first and then move on to LOD, you'll have the whole Cornell and Henry quests to go through before hitting up Reinhardt and Carrie again. That and you'll get to make note of all the curious little bits that were changed.
Also, in the first game, you can see Carrie's cotton white panties when in her Maria Renard dress. 8)

Well, technically they're already wearing alternate costumes to the standard ones in CV64 until you unlock their original costumes. It's a shame they couldn't also include the alternates from CV64.
Also - I'd say play LoD. It's a much more solid experience as the devs had time to actually hammer out the problems with CV64, and introduce a great new character to boot. AND you can unlock and play as both of the characters from CV64 and play through their stories. With lots of other exclusive goodies. You can also play LoD in higher res mode by utilizing the N64 expansion pak though I've heard this is buggy. Couldn't say myself as I keep meaning to get an expansion pak but haven't yet. Really though each version of the game (LoD is iirc officially as well as actually an "enhanced edition" of CV64) has exclusive content and they're both loads of fun imo, so whichever order you do play them in just make sure to play them both.
-
LOD like every other N64 I've played that uses the expansion pak for higher resolution isn't worth playing that way. It's not exactly buggy, the game just runs noticeably slower in a way that can hinder gameplay.
Even the cutscenes are all janked and run choppy. This is the same for Turok 2, South Park, Hybrid Heaven.........
Actually, I think Quake II runs at higher res and runs smoothly. That's like the only exception from my experience.

WTF?! Who the hell are you? Do I know you? Do you know me? No, no don't. Why? Because if you did, you'd know me and my brother just bought over 80 freaken DS and PSP games within the last 2-3 months! So you know what this proves? Your a douchebag. But oh, don't let that shame you, you fit here just right at the dungeon. So I'm told with all the sticky topics in regards to not feed troll that screams tp me "this here place has some serious issues with jackasses." And from what I seen and been told here too, there is no doubt in my mind aboutr this now. But that's cool, I still see some descent folks arounds here that still like to just chat about good ol' Castlevania. :)

Thank you, Abnormal Freak. That was very informative and to me, you've just opened and shut this case... and, er, no, not just because of the pantie remark either. >_>

Hey, Sinful. Read the rules and don't call people offensive names.
Also, nice job insulting the entire Dungeon populace in one fell swoop.
You're getting a Warning. Do not call people offensive names again.

Yes, I do. And I'm watching you right now, so take that out of your butt.

I think he was just asking a question, anyways
Go with legacy of darkness you get two games in one(prequel/sequel) with better controls and extras in the end it is a better game.
CV64<LoD

Wow, your a hypocrite, aren't you? (Is this calling people names too?) You mind when I call people names, but don't when others call me names or insult me?? lol, what the heck is going on here? Oh yeah! I'm the new guy! :o EVERYBODY HOP IN AND GANG RAPE THE NEW GUY! ;D
Nice modding, Jorge, I'm impressed. When can I be a mod to now? Seems like where all the fun is at?

Hey, this forum seems to have serious issues (I don't think I need to tell you that ;)). I talk about Castlevania, others talk about how they don't like others here or that they can't stand others opinion of what Castlevania game they like or hate in any category. What, you think I don't like others either? I can't stand most people (just like everybody else :)), but you don't see me calling people names out of the blue just because I can't stand people. I like to mind my own business for the most part and chit chat the only thing I care about when I'm here. Good ol' Castlevania :), preferably of the classic kind and now the N64 non-IGA kind at the moment since even these 3D iterations seem much more closer to classic vania then even the 2D IGA games. Talking about how I don't like people here is such a waste of time for me, and why I for the most part ignore when other say shit about me, because frankly for the most part I don't care, and I can relate. Big deal. Not hard to be a tad adult about it. But then you have guys like Thomas Belmont who also obviously seems to can't stand my guts by just out of the blue sticking his nose in for no reason just to tell me off because he thinks he knows me better then me? Well, lol, sorry for being human and very tempted every now and then to jump in when I see something so silly to say something to stick up for myself with a jab of my own every now and then due to the apparent reason that it seems to be everybody fend for themself type motto here? And personally, I don't mind it this way. But if it's not this way, and your a mod here, Jorge, then get off your butt and make sure anyone else that tells me about how they don't like me (like I love them too or something, lol) + especially make no comment about anything Castlevania to top it off too (just out of the blue), to stop their crying and just stick to voting. And if not, then whatever, I do what I want to, just like everybody else here. Seems pretty cool to me? ... That is what this is all about, being cool, right? ;D And besides, I'm human too and can easily be tempted to take a shot at someone face just because I can't stand the way he looks. ;) (Sigh, I wish this was like in real life, sometimes. In real life, most people dare not have the balls to say shit to me if they don't know me. But this is the internet. "Your a big loser with no balls! Ugly as shit too! Well no worries here! Here, grab a pair of these massive balls, slap 'em on, slap a new face by the name of avatar and enjoy, this here is the internet, boy. Hic, hic, hic! ;D"

Aaaand you just went and flamed the fucking admin just for warning you. You sure you didn't leave behind your brain? I'd be surprised if Jorgey and pals aren't at least giving you a temporary ban for this.
And hey, I can get away with calling you a dick because you are acting like a supermassive one right now.

There was a post here
It's gone now
(Figured I'd stay outta this one, lol)

Oh come now, there's nothing wrong with calling out someone's wrongs, isn't there?

To save people time from reading Sinful's massive wall of text, it's basically 'i hate you guys for not loving me.'
-
Thing is, he refuses to see that he's not even likable in the slightest.
...I was going to make a KoF reference here (you know which one), but then I decided against it.

me am wish Castlevania Resurrection is came out, prunyuu~

What's this topic about?
-
Which of the 64 Castlevania games should be played by people new to the series who are curious about them.
Go with LoD, only play 64 to see better level design in several stages.
-
play cv64 for 30 minutes then play lod to appreciate the changes it did more.
also, jorge, ban the entire forum. it's the only way to preserve peace.
-
So can someone answer me which N64 Castlevania game is harder when playing only as the whip guy?
-
64, what with all the Kamikaze bomb skeletons emerging from the ground in the forest of silence and chasing you.

Yeah, that's where I noticed the biggest diff in difficulty between the two too... Man, it was the one thing that started to get to me about playing the first version. When I got to that level again in the second game I was like "Oh no! Not again!" But then I was relieved to have a lot more breathing space while exploring that came with playing the second game.
-
I started with CV64. Got good enough with it over the years that it's no real hassle now. But to this day I still cannot get past the tower of execution. Just kept on getting turned around and not knowing where to actually go without killing myself :P. LoD fixed this nicely by making the tower of execution into more of a straight-forward level which allowed me to actually complete it.
-
Sinful,
Take two weeks off and enjoy the N64 titles.
-
And thus justice has been served, though I do worry if he'll blow up like a bitch instead and be even worse when he's back considering his reaction and attitude towards your previous warning.
-
Please do not speak ill... of those who are unable to speak back.
-
I understand, though I am merely voicing my worries. Lingering frustration on my part may have caused it to sound offensive.
-
I have played through CV64 more than LoD due to owning the former and having only beaten the latter's main quest on a rental. But I think CV64 should be played first. It actually has a number of levels that are designed differently than in LoD, making it more than a "special edition," and you get to start with a more direct Classicvania feel due to the whip character being there from the start. If you go from CV64 to LoD, you'll see some various refinements and differing quirks, as well as new storyline insights. Also, to my recollection, you'll find that a lot of levels are easier in LoD. In effect, they may be more balanced and/or straightforward; but I sort of miss the other level designs' contrasts from CV64, even if they do perhaps have more frustrating parts. I honestly would say to play them both, and start with CV64. But that's not to say that LoD is worse by any means. They both have their pros and cons.
-
I say 64 first, even if the gentleman's not around to read this. Just like some movies play out better with the ending first, CV64 will give you the real ending. Then LOD takes you back 7 years to experience events that led up to it. If you play LOD first, you won't get the same excitement outta CV64.

He can read, he just cannot respond.

Vkiller, yeah so it's kinda like watching a movie, then watching its prequel and seeing a similar locale or two. Like.... The Ring? :P
-
i played LoD first and liked it that way. it's a better experience and more polished. i then went back to play C64 as a quaint experience just to see what it was like. of course, if you prefer to start with someone who uses a whip right away, you're better off going with Castlevania 64 so you don't have to unlock Reinhardt to use him.
-
I enjoyed LoD more myself, Cornell's quest seemed to be more fun and the level design was much improved. Its been awhile but I also seem remember the camera being somewhat improved as well.

Everything was improved.

Legacy of Darkness. Simply for the fact it features updates that go into the stories that were from the first release. Consider it to to be "Super Castlevania 64" release, or something.
