Title: Subweapons --Exclusive or Inventory?
Post by: cecil-kain on May 20, 2012, 12:15:46 PM
And just to clarify, this topic doesn't apply to magic users like Soma Cruz, Charlotte, or Shanoa...  Your comments are always welcome.   8)

It's odd... that I actually like what PoR did... just not what was given and the ridiculous grind it had.

First of all, welcome back cecil-kain  :)

I chose the second option, as it is more viable while still maintaining the overall difficulty/challenge to a degree.

PoR's system was good (expect the grind stuff). But the subweapons should have limited ammo or be less powerful.

To tell the truth I just cannot decide at the moment.

Your forgot the way Bloodlines handled it. Being able to tell what candles contain subweapons or not (well, for the most part in that game it's like that).

Other then that, I only like one sub-weapon at a time. Having all at once complicates things too much. Plus I think it's best when your characters doesn't have an answer for everything with one of over a million moves at their disposal. :P I mean, how the heck are you supposed to balance a game like that out? You can't. ... Sadly not enough care or know about this, and thus these type of games have taken over and won today's gamers hearts, to my disappointment. :( ... I'm kicking myself for having of bought the first 3 Castleroids brand new new now...  ... AAHHH! I bought the last 3 Castleroids brand new too within these past 3 months!! :o I am what's wrong with today's games too!!!  :'( ... I'm going to go out to see if I can hop over a car as a punishment?... ... back again, dam car just swerved and hit a tree. How lame. >:(

Welcome back Cecil-Kain  :) I chose option 2. I like the classic style of one subweapon, but if I do pick up the wrong on by mistake then I'd like to go back and recover the previous one. Rondo was the first to introduce this and ever since then, it has stuck with the series classicvanias. With exceptions to CV X68000 of course.

And Bloodlines. Don't forget Bloodlines.

Everybody seems to be forgeting Bloodlines? Pretty sad, since I personally find that game pretty butt kick and did so many things right with the classic formula. Including this item type thing this topic is about.

Don't be so quick jumping to conclusions. I had bloodlines in mind when writing the post. The reason why I didn't mention it along with CV X68000 is because CV X68000 does not have the reclaim subweapon option after getting a different one. Bloodlines on the other hand does.

E-yikes. Believe it or not I actually forgot about Bloodlines even having that feature too. :o ... Oh no! That means I forgot about Bloodlines too! ;D

Thank-you Crisis and X, I appreciate the welcome.  :-)  My Demon Castle War project has slowed down a little bit lately, and I thought it might be a good time to revisit the Dungeon, and take a few polls...

Option 2. Having only 1 subweapon adds to the difficulty, but if I mistakenly pick up a bad subweapon, it's nice to be able to reclaim the old one.

I enjoy keeping an inventory, but I dislike having to level them all up.

I liked how you could level up the sub-weapons in LoD. all you had to do was pick up three of a kind and they were maxed out. No hassles there.

The only thing I hate about keeping all subweapons with you are having to navigate a menu for equipping/unequipping them.

I like one at a time because of the strategy that tends to be involved, but then there are moments where you're doing great, stocked up on a Triple Shot boomerang, and a Medusa Head not only kamikazes into you, but drops a goddamn knife. Dracula X did this system best, where the old weapon would "pop out" of you in case you wanted to keep it.

Look's like Rondo's classic subweapon system is the most popular format by a wide margin.

I strongly agree with this.   ;D

Dracula-X style subweapons for me please.  Actually...  What I really like is Harmony of Despair subweapons.  Collect them, and then equip a couple of the ones you think you want to use, but only change them at the beginning of a stage or at certain points in the game.  I really hope to see a full Metroidvania use this style some time.

And ugh - I hate leveling up sub-weapons.  I want to be rewarded for using a wide variety of sub-weapons, not just using the same one over and over again.
