Title: E3 2012 Reactions?
Post by: RichterB on June 05, 2012, 01:52:22 AM
E3 2012: Honestly, I feel more and more alienated by the video game industry. I don't know if I'm a "gamer" anymore or not. The rise of multi-device interactivity and all-in-one entertainment, combined with a flood of FPS games, increased glorification of mindless violence, too many redundant sequels, and emphasis on trying to be more like hoity-toity movies than games has really annoyed me. Another annoyance? Every time Nintendo innovates, even if in strange directions, the competitors find a way to copy it, and then everyone says that Nintendo was foolish and the other companies were smart, when those companies would likely not even have the idea without Nintendo. If Nintendo ceased to exist, I sometimes think innovation in hardware would disappear.

Nintendo, despite their shortcomings, is the closest thing to a "video game" company at this point, and I hope they have some good surprises and fun experiences to reveal tomorrow.

So far I've seen a bunch of gameplay videos from Assassin's Creed 3, which looks pretty impressive. I am not a fan of the series but it's the only thing so far that really caught my eye. At least a little.

The gameplay video for Resident Evil 6 looked extremely over-the-top. They're once again making an action film, not a video game. They showed a bit of Leon, which is supposed to be more classic "survivor horror", but there's nothing scary to be found whatsoever. Crashing helicopters, explosions.... I want SILENCE, dark mansions and creepy atmosphere.

The new Tomb Raider looks interesting, but I'm not holding my breath. It seems Crystal Dynamics wants to innovate the franchise, but from what I've seen it's too little, too late. The game looks nice, but there's nothing unique about it.

All I'm interested in right now is Castlevania. And to see more of the Wii U.

All I can say is - IE on Xbox, with Kinect. rofl

I just watched some gameplay of The Last of Us. It's looking really, really good. IMO. I may need to get that game.

I have to admit that I really liked the new DmC trailer, the game just looks...badass, and the gameplay itself looks pretty cool too. It just seems really fun to play

The Sony and Microsoft conferences have been, at least for me, dire at worst and boring at best. I'm banking on Nintendo for the goods this year.

I just want a Metroid game.

Watching dogs is game of the show so far.

Also, that Star Wars game, looks INSANE. Welcome, next-gen!

I know your feels guys :( I'm waiting for Nintendo to...though primarily for releasing a new FE game in Amurrica, hopefully. Well, not that I'm getting my hopes up...though personally, even if they do release the new Fire Emblem game in America, it might cause me a lot of trouble if people start invading the Fire Emblem forum I moderate. Microsoft:

Ugh Kinect everywhere.
Halo 4 looks cool but im burned out on that series.
Sports stuff I don't care about.
Fable: ON RAILS!
Xbox Smartglass was interesting but eh.
Uncharted has a female protagoinist(I'll still get it anyway, love Tomb Raider).
Usher hasn't been good since Confessions.
South Park was the highlight of this show and I like how Matt and Trey flat out burned Microsoft at their own conference.
Didn't watch BLOPS2, turned as soon as that shit came on.

EA: one hour of meh

Ubisoft:

You never start your presser off with Flo Rida, you just don't.
The host's were trying to hard to be a meme, still I do love me some Aisha Tyler.
Boobs, drugs and tigers oh my! Far Cry 3 looks good.
Rayman Legends prooves that 2D can be just as fun as a hollywood AAA title.
AC3 looks great, love their take on the American Revolution.
Watch Dog's out of fucking nowhere, easily gonna be on alot of "game of the show" list's.

Sony:

The Last of Us looks amazing, even though it's leaning a little too heavy on the "cinamatic gameplay" side.
Beyond was.....ehh? Well I wasn't a fan of Heavy Rain but I'll need to see more.
God of War Ascension looked like God of War, nothing really wrong with that.
That move shit was annoying.
Sony, why u no Vita games?

Well that's all my reviews on it. Out of all of the pressers so far, I'd say Ubisoft did pretty well with Sony in second. All eyes are on Nintendo and the Wii U now. They're got much to gain and everything to lose, if all goes well they can easily come out with the best showing.

Nintendo E3 Conference...*face palm*

Listen, Nintendo is historically my favorite company, but this was a particularly sub-par presentation, when they needed a stellar one. Nintendo Land as your system seller? Are you kidding me? Mario U looks like it has the best aesthetic of the recent 2D Marios, but it doesn't really show off the Wii U. Pikmin 3 looks great, but not because it's a Wii U game. It could have been out years ago for Wii in theory. Wii Fit U has the same problem. I'm at a loss here. Hopefully revelations in the coming events Nintendo is promising will reveal something more exciting. Maybe it's too soon for Zelda or Metroid, but those needed to be teased at least. Sigh.  :'(

Nothing has really impressed me from anyone. Some things are better than others, but nothing is blowing me away.

This is the first thing that came to mind at the end of Nintendo's conference:

http://www.1up.com/news/nintendo-apologizes-casual-focused-e3-showing (http://www.1up.com/news/nintendo-apologizes-casual-focused-e3-showing)

Clearly they didn't learn their lesson. I don't know why they use E3 to advertise their casual games, while all of their more gamer focused titles, like all of the excellent 3DS titles coming up this summer/fall, go completely unmentioned. My sisters, mom, and grandmother don't watch E3. I do. Put on a show please.

That being said, E3 was an all around snore. Microsoft had Halo Prime, which actually looked good, Sony had yet another God of War game, and Ubisoft had, well, everything. I'll be damned, I think this is the first time Ubisoft has ever stolen an E3 away from the big three.

But really, not a lot of console selling exclusives. Makes sense for Sony and Microsoft, since their systems are on the way out, but I know there's more in store for the Wii U. I just don't know why they're not showing it.

Krusty: What the hell was that? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhe3vSe-mmw#)

HAHAHA! Perfect! (especially when Reggie said at the end, "let's take one last look at Nintendo Land"...and then its just a fireworks show with a train going around in circles.

BUT: Reggie's on Spike right now about to announce/demo a new exclusive by Platinum Games for Wii U that was left out of the press conference. Hopefully this will help ease the pain.

PS: I guess Nintendo Land isn't necessarily a bad game...but it doesn't seem as good as Wii Sports; it doesn't seem like it's really going to do what it needs to. It's more of a Wii Play Motion or Mario Party-level title from what I can see. Actually, Zombi U is the best example of Wii U maybe, but it's sort of a stale concept with some nice gimmicks to make it cooler. 3DS content...it's just the stuff that's been talked about for quite some time so far.

There better be a darn good Metroid game in the pipeline. And I'm not talking about a Metroid Prime remake/clone that uses the Wii U controller as a scanner like every other game. I want a game that takes the best elements of Prime 1 (open world with tons of collectables) and Other M (1st AND 3rd person action) together, packing in a ton of new items and area themes.

All the 3DS stuff will be shown at 6pm PST.  It's a second conference, basically.
I'm digging the Mario goodness though (Paper Mario, NewSMBU, NewSMB2).

But they need to STOP SHOWING BULLSHIT CASUAL GRANDMA TITLES.  THIS IS NOT THE TIME!

Do you think the 3DS conference will have suprise announcements, or just extensions of what was shown at today's press event. Because, we saw enough to know there are some good games on 3DS, but we didn't see hints at the future.

Also, are there any more surprises for Wii? What about (the rumored) Kirby 20th Anniversary Collection, or Disaster: Day of Crisis and Pandora's Tower for North America?

Like I hinted, I'm surprisingly cool with them showing Wii Fit U, as that series has been more enjoyable than I expected, and they didn't spend much time on it. However, they needed to show a lot more "game games," and they said they would. (I needed at least a Star Fox, Metroid, or Zelda demo/tease to round things out. All the Mario stuff was cool, but a little too familiar). Still waiting to see that Platinum Games surprise game. Where was the solid price and release date info?

EDIT: Platinum's Wii U "Project P100" on Spike now. It's by Hideki Kamiya (Bayonetta, etc).

EDIT 2: Looks like Pikmin meets Viewtiful Joe and FF's Crystal subseries...very action-based and cartoony...Not looking so hot....

Anyway, Ubisoft winning, I suppose so...

Most of their games, while technically impressive, seemed like they were mostly movies with occasional gameplay. I don't understand the fuss about Watchdogs. Sure it looks nice and has scope, but it still seems more like a movie than a game. Plus, the neat "listening in" spying function was in the underrated SpyFiction on PS2. (Now there's a game that actually needs a sequel).

I like Pikmin, Crystal Chronicles, and Hideki Kamiya.

Not seeing the problem. It looks fun, if unconventional.

Well, you're right. It's not that it doesn't look fun...but it doesn't look like it'll be much more fun than the kind of stuff from Nintendo Land. I guess I was looking for something "louder"...like what they're doing with MGS Rising.

You know, this E3, I guess I am still intrigued by Konami. Want to see more Castlevania, maybe some surprises, and Metal Gear Rising looks like it's coming together a little better than I thought it would. Oh, and Capcom...what do they have? DMC? That appears better than in earlier trailers, though not really groundbreaking for a reboot. Lost Planet 3 has potential. I don't know...

I'm grasping at straws here. Good thing I still have a backlog of games I haven't gotten or played yet this generation (which hasn't been as robust as previous generations on the whole in terms of Sony + Nintendo + MS, IMO). I think the Bionic Commando 3D reboot has been my favorite next-gen game of this generation.

Correction on my part: The 3DS Stuff is tomorrow, not today.

Nintendo needs to keep ALL of the "Casual Grandma/Dorky Dad" titles OUT of the presentations.  Show them afterwards.  They are doing things backwards (I guess the market drives 'em that way)?  The balance board needed 5 minutes of our time at best.  The NintendoLand looks like it 'could' be cool... but the hardcore gamers would've wanted a Metroid minigame and a Zelda minigame shown, not the Animal Crossing stuff (no offense to Luigi's Mansion).

The Luigi's Mansion minigame made me want Namco to bring back Pac-Man VS.

Nothing wit the dorky family needed to devote that much time, and when grandma started playing I was checking my phone and other websites.

Nintendo has 360 days to show the casual games, but during E3 they need to bring out the heavy hitters.

Notable absences:
-Nothing from F-Zero
-Nothing from Metroid
-Nothing from Wario
-Nothing from Kid Icarus
-Nothing from Star Fox

Pikmin 3 was nice but no system seller and it's new footage of stuff we've known of for years.

See if Nintendo was "so bad it's good" then maybe I would have liked it a bit more.

But that shit was just....bad. Especially since your trying to sell a new console you claimed is more 'core focused" when all we saw was casual crap and year old ports.

Correct, but isn't that the case with the 3DS stuff we were shown? You know, this kind of reminds me of the Gamecube launch...

Oh, and please don't tell me I've waited this long for a new Pikmin (on Wii NOT Wii U, which it was ported/upgraded to) only to have 1 new type of Pikmin (rock). At the beginning of the trailer, it seemed to tease a flying type, too. But as neat as Pikmin 3 is, you're right, it's still not a system seller.

EDIT: Yeah, you know, they should have just slapped down franchise after franchise of the Nintendo classics. That was really the only way to make this system work. That, or a crazy-good new IP.

See if Nintendo was "so bad it's good" then maybe I would have liked it a bit more.

But that shit was just....bad. Especially since your trying to sell a new console you claimed is more 'core focused" when all we saw was casual crap and year old ports.

I guess the question is: how long have they actually been working on the "games" for this new system. I think they overbooked themselves on 3DS and Skyward Sword maybe. Heck, Pikmin 3 has been in the works for who knows how long for Wii, showing that they had resources stretched.

The problem is they're not putting out any 1st party 'core focused' titles. I guess they got so lambasted over not having 3rd party support for the Wii that they've completely put all of their faith in 3rd party titles for the Wii U like they did with the 3DS. Problem with that is all of the 3DS software showed up late.

Looking at Nintendo's website, there are actually 'core focused' games coming out for the launch, they're just not talking about them because everyone else is, I guess.

We've got:
ZombiU
Assassin's Creed III
Darksiders II
Pikmin 3
New Super Mario Bros U
Project P-100

It's not stellar, but I don't usually expect launches to be stellar.

Pikmin 3 almost doesn't count. It's like Twilight Princess on the Wii launch line-up. It's something that was taken away from the previous console and saved to bolster a weak lineup (albiet, this time, it was visually upgraded). Still, if you take out Pikmin 3, which should have been on Wii, the 1st party lineup relies on New Super Mario Bros U for new games. I think I heard Darksiders II has been delayed on all systems.

SONY QUESTIONS: Where is The Last Guardian from team ICO?! Also, why no huge PS Vita lineup?

That was kind of my point. The games are there, they're just not 1st party, which is why Nintendo isn't talking about them. And Darksiders II was delayed, but it was only until August.

And yeah, I don't know what Sony is doing. They just released the Vita and it feels like they're just resting on their laurels. Nintendo had to work their collective asses off to recover from the 3DS launch, so Sony, come on, let's see some legwork!

As bad as the Nintendo conference was, it was still miles better than Microsoft and probably on par with Sony.  Sony drops the ball in that it's got this brand-new awesome handheld and nothing to show for it.  Nothing particularly memorable (there are a few things here and there but the 3DS is looking like the handheld with the cool titles).

We gotta check out the third parties now:  Konami, Ubisoft (and yeah!  Who Knew!?  Their stuff looks cool.  I dig Scribblenauts Ultimate with Multiplayer :D ), and... Capcom?

Don't give up guys. Just because you're not happy with e3 and what the companies had to show doesn't mean anything. When all else fails you could always retro game. Play and discover games you hadn't played before. Theres so many NES and SNES games out there that I haven't even tried yet. Check through Virtual Console. It isn't a total loss.

To be honest I think the best work being done isn't at e3. Its from private developers who grew up playing these awesome games and aspire to make the games as good if not better than the ones they grew up with. Keep the faith alive guys :) you never know what could happen in the future.

Retro games are always great. I still have sort of a desire to play Star Tropics and Crystalis. Every time I go to try the games I get side tracked in some way. Also Kabuki Quantum Fighter I'll have to try out as well.

Man, I just did not like E3 this year. The conferences for the Big 3 were mostly marred by a general, pervasive awkwardness and a lack of hypeworthy reveals. Ubisoft was probably the real winner here.

I was pretty disappointed in Nintendo. It's hard to get excited for the Wii U when their big first-party launch title is just another NSMB game. The 3DS offerings apart from Castlevania and Luigi's Mansion didn't catch my eye either (NSMB2 on the 3DS looks VERY bland, though it is admittedly more tolerable when viewed in 3D). No word on Zelda, Metroid, or Retro Studio's big new mystery game... eh.

At least next year's E3 will probably be more interesting.

For me, this E3 is pretty good. The announcement of Castlevania: Mirror of fate and Castlevania:Lords of shadow 2 got me solved already. Then watching the gameplay videos and the trailers of Assassin's creed 3,Resident Evil 6,Watchdogs,The last of us and tomb raider reboot make me really want to play them already.
