Title: Motion blur in Castlevania HD when moving?
Post by: Esco on June 11, 2012, 10:00:59 PM
This may be a very stupid question, but I just got a 40 inch samsung lcd tv, and I notice whenever I move in Castlevania HD there seems to be motion blur. But when I stop there isn't any. Is this normal? And if so is there a way to adjust my TV so I do NOT see it? It looks ugly and gives me a splitting headache.  >:(

Not sure this would fix it but I'm pretty sure PS3 has a vsync option buried in the console's settings (I don't know about 360 if you're playing it on that). If you haven't got it on already, turning it on might make a difference.

From what I know and see all over the net vsync is automatically ON when using PS3 and there is no option to shut it off.

P.S. I have a Samsung LN40C530, and the ps3 is connected via the normal red, white and yellow cords. I have an HDMI cable coming in the mail.

You have just answered your problem:the ps3 is connected via the normal red, white and yellow cords.
When you'll get the HD cable, everything is going to be back to normal.

Indeed, it is as Dark Nemesis says.

If you're using Red/White/Yellow, you're using Composite Video (only the Yellow gives you video in an analog signal).  You're going to get a lot of bleeding effects, etc. since the analog signal is quite outdated these days and can only produce a certain level of 'cleanliness' in a signal.

If you were using Red/Green/Blue/Red/White, you'd be using Component Video, which is still an analog signal but now you've got three video signals (Red/Green/Blue) and two audio (Red/White), thus providing a better picture.

HDMI will give you a digital picture with no signal loss.  Your video (and audio) quality should improve quite drastically provided that you have a TV that supports it, which it sounds like you do considering the model number you provided.

Just wait for the HDMI, all your problems will be solved.

It sounds like you're having the same problem I have with my laptop. Remember my posts a while back about my game blurring, so I asked others to test it and they said it didn't blur on their screens? Apparently some monitors/TVs can't handle smooth pixel transitions very well. Maybe it's trying to interpolate the image for you. When you watch TV or movies on it, does it look like you're watching the BBC? If so, then I don't know why the games are blurring, but if you don't feel like you're watching a British sitcom, then the TV is probably interpolating everything.

Or something.

Ah, it is also true what TheouAegis says.  Some older model LCDs have a slower transition rate, so the video blurs (similar to how the PSPs have a motion blur effect when you move, or the old blur effect on the old-old-old Gameboys).

Thanks for the tips everyone; I'll report back how it looks when I get the HDMI cable.  8)

...
Or something.

That's my biggest gripe about the new TVs out there now. If you don't know what I"m talking about, watch a US sitcom on an American TV, and then watch a British sitcom on the same TV. The two have very distinct looks. I think even Mexican sitcoms might have a similar look.

New TVs are often easier to move around, but I think I will always love the boob tube.

I believe the reason for this is the England at one point used PAL for some of its BBC programming (I'm not sure if they switched to NTSC).
The stuff you watch on BBC has been converted from PAL to NTSC, thus causing a jitter effect or an odd look...

...although the newer televisions no longer care: they just read the digital signal and such things like unimportant to the newer models.

Sounds like its your TV. I got a 50 inch LG plasma and I don't get any motion blur.

Edit: I see you said you were using RCA cables on a HDTV which is always going to look shitty.   HDMI should improve the picture greatly, or even Component.  LCD/LED TVs tend to have lower refresh rates, but the newer ones aren't bad at all.

you may now have to adjust your color settings for chapter 10 to look right.
Since HDMI makes everything sharper and clear, it may look too clear.
