Which castlevania game do you find the most challenging? I have always thought it's CotM.
-
It's a tie between Dracula's Curse and Dracula X SNES for me. Both games are notorious for their unforgiving nature.
-
I haven't played all of them yet. But for the ones I've played and beat I'm going with CotM. However, I'm playing Dracula X now so maybe that will change.
-
You guys obviously haven't played Haunted Castle
Those games mentioned are cake compared to it,

You can always insert coin once you ran out of lives. :D. But if you are talking about a 1 credit run, then indeed. It is really difficult.
In the Classicvania series, I'll go with Dracula X SNES and Bloodlines. Bloodlines was nasty because you face two boss at 1 stage.
CotM and OoE are the hardest in the Metroidvania series.

HAUNTED CASTLE
Thread over.
-
Dracula's curse, bloodlines, and for some reason OOE yeah yes it's a MV but still it seems that at that point in time playing nothing but mvs made me soft so I got kicked playing it the first time around aw heck I still get handed to myself it's hard regardless :P.
-
Haunted Castle for sure. Vampire Killer is probably second.
-
Haunted Castle, most definitely.
And you can't just insert a coin when you get a game over and keep going, it sends you right back to Stage 1.
-

It doesn't matter how many coins you put into that cursed Cabinet. Once you run out of lives then that's it; Game over man! Haunted Castle is a real unforgiving man-whore. I've only ever been able to beat it twice and the first time was happenstance. Just pure luck of the draw. Dracula X for the SNES used to be a very hard one to beat but not so much anymore. I also used to have a heck of a time trying to win against CVIII but like Dracula X I've mastered it over time. But Haunted Castle... It still haunts me.
-
Having not gotten around to VK or HC yet (for shame, me), I'm Nthing the Dracula X nominations. Medusa heads on what, like the third screen? Basically a giant middle finger. Though I like the pacing--a screen that makes you want to beat yourself with your controller, then a screen of relatively easy carnage. Nice.
-
Haunted Castle is not so hard with the maximum amount of credits inserted. I believe that doesn't count as cheating, too.
-
Can I add CV Adventures on the list? Christoper is too frickin' slow and his vampire killer will revert to leather once you get hit. Also the stage with many spikes is a pain in the ass.
-
I've never played HC (but it hasn't have Castlevania in the name anyway so ha!), so I'm going to go with Dracula X.
-
This is a newbie thread.
Next, there will be a 'what is the easiest', 'what is the prettiest', 'which one has the best music', and the dreadful 'what is your favorite'.
And you know what the deal is with that kind of thread. (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,4206.0.html)
Plus, everyone knows it's Haunted Castle.

maybe a section for newbie talk can be created? Us new folks like to talk of such things. Just a idea.

Symphony of the Night, Lords of Shadow, Symphony of the Night, Symphony of the Night
(Honorable mention to Super Castlevania IV on the music though. Close call.)

HAUNTED CASTLE
Thread over.
This by far.
I should do "honorable" mentions:
The Adventure GB but I managed to finish it without even killing myself one live
OoE is almost Contra 4 hard, but you can handle it
CotM was kind of hard
-
The hardest game for me is Vampire Killer, it's the only one I haven't beaten and the farthest I've gotten is level 2.
-
OoE is almost Contra 4 hard
And then you play Lv. 1 Hard Albus mode and it becomes Contra 4.
-
I used to think when i was a kid that the original Castlevania was impossible to beat, and now i can occassionally beat it without dying once lol.
The only Castlevania game i've played that i never beat was Dracula X, but that's probably because i find the game to be so boring to play through that i never really played it enough to get good at it.
-

Except you can't aim. Better start abusing those invincibility frames.

First place goes to "Haunted Castle". Just not on any "good" merits. The slaggy controls and bad collision detection make an improbable game, GAME-BREAKINGLY IMPOSSIBLE when you couple it with what really feels like dartboard enemy grouping. Bob F'n Ross (the dead afro painter) could have spawned the enemies better. A happy skeleton here, a wistful zombie there, Let's put this mean old tree over here, isn't it delightful? No Bob. Just... no. The art style can only be described as something you can NEVER un-see. I'm guilty of playing this atrocity through solely for it's one good point. The Music. Which to be honest, is not the best quality ever, but that's only a tech flaw of the board. The composition had me brute force my way on through for the next Eargasm time and again... until i found mp3's of the soundtrack. Now I delete this "steaming pile of disdain" (which is what it should be called if they ever re-release it as an actual CV chronicles title. ) from every iteration of MAME i ever get my hands on.
Second place goes to "Belmont's Revenge." That game was Over-Dose hard at certain points. It's everything "Haunted Castle" could have been, but failed to accomplish. Even if the art style remained the same. When I was a kid I would've dropped gobs of soggy, palm sweat soaked, quarters into that cabinet. I'd have come back home with dirty laundry, said I got robbed, and ate the ass whoopin' I had guaranteed myself. My grandma was a sweet, but very perceptive old lady. She knew exactly how to handle that line when Capcom's "Magic Sword" came out. In hindsight, I don't think I've ever been so tan... I miss her.
-
Also MAD LOL! at Albus mode/Contra 4. OD! ;D
"Wayforward" would have made an excellent Castlevania game. Play their games. There's a Metrovania nod in each, and they're all Beautifully drawn and Contra 4 hard. Except Monster Tale. That one's the exception, difficulty wise. They also made the only Thor game ever worth playing.

Castlevania 2 has traumatized me during my chilhood for his difficulty ^_^

Castlevania 2 has traumatized me during my chilhood for his difficulty ^_^
It traumatized me because it was so badly done because of the limitations, the hints system there fucking sucks. Besides that, it's an okay game.
Outside Haunted Castle, I think CV3 is the most difficult.
-
I have Haunted Castle on PS2, the game till this day still pimp slaps me when I pull it out to play. Vampire Killer is not easy either with how random it can feel to a new player.
-
I am actually still having a hard time with the original mode on Castlevania Chronicles... it's not terribly difficult, but I haven't played Haunted Castle yet, so Chronicles remains the hardest for me...

Last time I checked if you put nomis/NOMIS(cannot remember if it was lower or upper case) on arrange mode something happens. It's been awhile since I played it.
-
So far, the hardest Castlevania game I've beaten was Castlevania 3. That game took me a solid 5 hours to complete. No emulator, actually finished in one sitting. Recently, I got through SCV4 in around 1-2 hours, but never did I get my ass kicked as much as CV3. Sure, PoR and AoS took longer, but those aren't "difficult" due to the leveling up mechanic. Skill and memorization is what got me through CV3, Contra-Style!
-
The original Castlevania, but that's because I suck.
Of the ones I've played/own anyway.
I, III, IV, SOTN, Lords, and I used to own Circle.
I've only beat SOTN, it was pretty easy actually, and I'm almost done with Lords.
-
Of the games I've played, I'll say that Dracula's Curse is the hardest. I rented it as a kid. Then I bought the rental store's copy when they got rid of it. I finally beat it last year after I downloaded it on the Wii's Virtual Console. Curse is an apt title for the game. Seemed like every few years I'd get up the courage to try it again and then ragequit. I finally finished it a few months back.
-
For me the two hardest CV titles out there are probably Dracula's Curse and CV: The Adventure. It was a profanity fest...
Oops! I believe I've already replied to this thread... I must be tired.
-
Curse of Darkness. Definitely. Not that the game itself is hard. But it's so boring. Hallways and hallways and hallways till the end of time. I still haven't beaten it.
-
Haunted Castle, without a doubt.
And if it have to be a console game, Castlevania III.
And Circle of the Moon for the portable ones.
-
I would say Dracula X on SNES is one of the hardest. I also had problems with almost every boss in Circle of the Moon.
-

Me too. From the first boss I was already having problem.
And the arena is almost impossible to beat.
Dracula is really, really hard too (but the music is so beautiful...).

1. vampire kiler - it's a long game with a lot of surprises, not to mention respawning enemies... would take ages of trial and error to figure out if you're not using the infinite lives "cheat." beating such a long game on just 3 lives is what makes it really tough.
2. haunted castle - exceptionally difficult, but a short game. if you practice on the easier ROM and change the game settings to a lower difficulty you can learn the enemy patterns/heart locations to a point where the game becomes manageable. it's actually pretty fun once you start figuring it out.
3. Castlevania chronicles (original version) - this one is vanilla CV gameplay but is just really tough, some sections just have a lot of small enemies that are near-impossible to avoid, and each hit takes off 1/4 health. i alsop recall the clocktower level / falling gears / werewolf boss being a pain. lots of trial and error.
4. CVIII - another tough classic, maybe the hardest of the well-known titles
-
Dracula's Curse is the only one I have yet to beat. (Well, and Curse of Darkness, Order of Ecclesia, and Lords of Shadow, which I stopped playing out of boredom, and I've never played Vampire Killer.)

HAUNTED CASTLE
Thread over.
Oh, and this.
But the game sucks so much dick it's difficult for me to even consider it a Castlevania game. :p Cool that it exists for the soundtrack, nothing else.
Also, I'm really surprised SNES Dracula X has been mentioned a few times. That game is such a cakewalk for me I find it surprising that people have such difficulty with it as to consider it one of the harder titles.
-
castlevania the adventure.... Lethargic guy with some weird jumping going on... yeaaaaah he seems like he just woke up the whole game... c'mon chris
-

There are different kinds of players, I would say. I'm also surprised when people call Dracula's Curse the hardest game in the series. Yes, it is a hard game, but not an unbeatable nightmare.
I can't say for sure why Dracula X is so hard for me. May be it's Richter himself - I don't feel very comfortable, controlling this guy.
-
Last time I checked if you put nomis/NOMIS(cannot remember if it was lower or upper case) on arrange mode something happens. It's been awhile since I played it.
Entering your name as NOMIS makes you start with LESS life. It's an f'you cheat.
Original mode in Chronicles is pretty tough, I'll grant you that. Vampire Killer is definitely among the hardest, mainly because it takes so much trial and error to get anywhere. I never thought CVIII was that bad, probably because I enjoy playing it so much...
I've been playing through OoE again recently, and it's definitely the hardest amongst the Metroidvania entries. Rondo of Blood is no cakewalk either, even in the 2.5D DXC version. Still, I would have to give Haunted Castle both the "HARDEST" and "SUCKIEST" awards overall.

Castlevania Chronicles Final Stage - Perfect, Hard, No Damage, Subwpns, Ups (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahsiMTd82bU#)
It seems easy to me... jk
Vampire Killer, Haunted Castle and Dracula X

It depends how you decided to complete the game.
Dracula X on the normal path where you fall in stage 4 and traverse the catacombs is straight forward.
Playing the game where you fight the white knight and save Maria and Annette is much more difficult.
For one thing, you have to finish stage 4 with no sub weapon (because of the key) and you can not fall into the pits in an area ripe with medusa heads. As soon as this happens you need to start the game again, or use a password which let's you start at stage 4. Secondly, if and when you beat the knight, you need to pass through a series of rooms which are also very easy to fall off and ghosts keep following you. Then you need to get to the right room and use the key to free Maria.
If you save both girls, you have to fight death, who is harder than Dracula. (Drac isn't easy, but he's easier than people think)
I would say the hardest are:
CV 3
Haunted Castle
Bloodlines (mainly the later stages)
CV Chronicles
Dracula X (saving both girls)
Cotm/ OOE on Level 1 (either mode)
-
I'm going with Vampire Killer. Or Haunted Castle. Both of them are way too unforgiving.
