So I've bought more HD collections now than I ever thought I would have.
So at this point, I find myself wondering what a Castlevania HD set would entail. Would they remaster Lament and Curse? Throw in an HD version of Legacy of Darkness (like how Perfect Dark got remastered on XBLA)?
Or would they try remastering DXC and it's games along with another 2D title? I honestly have no clue, but I'd like to hear what you think.
Opinions?
-
The thought has crossed my mind, but Lament and Curse were ultimately not that popular or even critically acclaimed. It's the difference between these two games and all the other games/franchises that got HD Collections this generation.
-
I'd rather see 2D games get a 2.5D treatment and get released on HD consoles. Like CotM/HoD/AoS or DoS/PoR/OoE for instance.

An HD 2.5D collection of Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow would be a day-one buy for me.
I could imagine if did popular, they'd release a sequel collection for the three DS games.

Not a bad idea.

This topic is making me salivate.
I'd love to see:
NES
GB
SNES/Genesis
GBA
DS
SotN-Chronicles-Legacy of Darkness
PS2
Vampire Killer/Haunted Castle/Kid Dracula, etc...
... collections. With the games having tweaked scripts and level design/mechanics where needed.
And then have a special release with ALL of them packaged together. All my money. ALL MY MONEY KONAMI.
-
Of course I'll buy whatever CV-related trash they put on the shelves, but I'd rather have a simple compilation of the series. And that would be the easier option for them, really. If we haven't seen a compilation yet (not counting that shitty CV/Contra PC release), we're not likely to see HD remakes of some games that sold like shit in the first place.
-
Eh, I'm not big on buying things I've already bought once, unless there is some kind of significant upgrade. Even then unless it's years later I usually feel cheated. Konami, or rather the company Konami chose to farm the task out to, couldn't even get their HD re-release of Silent Hill 2 and 3 right. In the words of Jim Sterling "A day one patch for games that are almost a decade old!!!!" and apparently the patch didn't even fix most of the problems.
I will, however, be all over that Sly Cooper HD collection whenever I eventually get a PS3.
-
While I don't see it I would love to have an HD LoI.
-
I'd buy it, but the real question is, what kinda trophies/achievements would they have?? Any ideas??

My topic-derailing senses are tingling!
I would LOVE it if Konami did that, but look at the way they've been handling their other franchises, like Silent Hill & whatnot.
The only 'collection' I've seen is the Castlevania Double Pack and the Castlevania & Contra Collection for PC.
They'd have to do a lot of reverse-engineering to "HD" Remaster everything, though it would be pretty awesome.
I can see them retrofitting the Harmony of Despair engine to remake the DS titles and even Symphony of the Night with new graphics. However, with the older games they'll need a talented team of sprite artists to come back and retouch everything. Add to that an audio remastering engineer to take the awesome tunes and either arrange them, or make new versions of them.

This Game Is Long And Flat (50)
Walk through 45 flat, identical corridors.

I do think an HD version of Legacy of Darkness would be pretty damn cool though. Especially if they added a CONTROLLABLE CAMERA. Or, you know, the decent lock-on system that Zelda robbed the N64 Vanias of.
-
Legacy of Darkness has a controllable camera.
Just use the D-Pad.
-
D-pad? My computer doesn't come with a... oh right. I've never owned an N64. I've only emulated the game, which is to say it sucked a whole lot worse than it should have.
But my lock on comment still stands.
-
You lock on with R.
You're right that it's not as good as Z-Targeting in OoT though.

Beat me to it damnit!
-
Now that I think of it, a LoD HD remaster wouldn't fix most of the more intrinsic problems the game has, but mapping controls to a more modern controller and unfuzzying the graphics and textures would go a long way to handling at least some of them.
That said, it's an under-appreciated game, and knocking it in with other games would be good for the series, I think.
I am also in favor of packaging SCIV, Legacy, and Lament, all in HD textures as a single set.
-
The most I see an HD collection actually being is something similar to Metal Gear Solid's collection. The two PS2 titles (in MGS's case, Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater. So in CV's case, Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness), and the most popular PSP title (Peace Walker in MGS's case, or the only PSP title in CV's case, Dracula X Chronicles).
Every collection I've seen so far has been of PS2 and PSP games, unless I'm missing some. While I doubt Legacy of Darkness will be in one, Perfect Dark DID get an HD remastering (as someone said before me).
-
Perfect Dark DID get an HD remastering (as someone said before me).
And it looks FANTASTIC compared to the original.
-
In an off-topic note about that, I really wish they did something about the controls. I really loved the game back when I got it new for the N64, but playing it today (especially on an entirely differently shaped controller), the gameplay just feels really dated to me. Even when you put on the Halo or Call of Duty control schemes (the former of which I believe has the BEST controls for an FPS ever, seconded by Killzone 3). Honestly, I'd prefer if they remade the game rather than just remastering it.
Now if they remastered Legacy of Darkness... Oh boy, even if it felt dated, I'd still buy it, considering I love the N64 titles.

There's gotta be one for using the Piyo Piyo Shoes and Piko Piko Hammer together on Lament of Innocence. XD

They better make those damn Piyo Piyo sound effects in cutscenes if they do re-release the game! D:<
No, really, I was sad when I found out that they didn't.

Today (August 22), LoI PS2 archives (for PS3) released in Japan.

This may mean that there is no release of HD version.

I'd rep this shit.
-
I'd get behind this provided it's kept far, far away from whoever it was they hired to butcher the Silent Hill Collection.
Or just a disc with all the 2D games on it.
-
I'd buy it for the NES games.

Uhh... What's so wrong about the slient hill collection?

Its bugged the hell out. After eight million patches.
But concerning Castlevania HD, please Konami. Super Castlevania IV and Legacy of Darkness in HD. Tis all I ask.

Really I guess all the bugs were fixed when I bought it I am getting no bugs at all.

I'd just like to see them stuff as many games as possible on one collection, starting from the earliest games and moving forward. They could even do something like include the PC, Amiga, Commodore, etc. ports of the original, but it would be too weird and awesome for them to even consider an idea like that.
Then for bonuses they could include Vampire Killer, and Haunted Castle. But again, I don't think they'd ever fill a collection with shitty games...it's just the completionist in me that would love to see that happen. They could throw in the arcade game, too. Now that would be great.
I'd love to see bonus footage, like maybe some interviews that reveal stuff we never knew about. That would be incredible to learn new things about the series after all these years.

Nice, that's mean I can play LoI with the Japanese voice actors without having to mod my PS2. There are also a few exclusive easter eggs in that version apperently.

Really? What kind of easter eggs? I would love to find out more about this.
I've really come to respect Lament of Innocence. I honestly feel that if the level design were better, it would be among the top CVs, and possibly even better than Symphony. They nailed everything else with that game (well, maybe not story/dialog) and it's just brought down so far by the horrible flatness and repetitive rooms.
-
Forget an HD collection. I along with a few other people on this forum would rather see 2.5D remakes of the three GBA titles. CotM's level design was on par with SotN and I think the areas would look EPIC in 2.5D. HoD on the other hand, could use a new look. The art style, in my opinion, was just bad. It hurt my eyes and I don't know what they were thinking when they made it like that. In terms of graphics, it felt like it took a step back from the sharp and polished graphics of CotM and SotN. A 2.5D remake would give the game another chance. And finally AoS. That was a great game with decent level design (the graphics could have been a little more sharp and polished though), excellent controls, and a decent story with a plot twist towards the end (Some is Dracula's reincarnation). Yes, these three games deserve the 2.5D treatment and enough time has passed for the next generation of fans who never got to play the original games to experience them.

I'd buy that in a heartbeat. :)

I can help with that.
They were thinking that the GBA SP was not yet invented and so they had no backlight and every sane publication BLASTED Circle for having environments that were so dark it was practically invisible on the original GBA's screen. HoD was upscaled in terms of color to be more visible on the dark reflective screen used at the time.
Of course, the bright garish colors (along with the plot twist of the Castle's representing the two halves of Maxim's mind) could also be seen as a metaphor for the instability of Maxim's mind, if you want a story-based reason.

Really? What kind of easter eggs? I would love to find out more about this.
I can't remember where I read it (I thought Mr P's site but apperently not) but I recall that in the Japanese version, that if you hit the statues that can rotate in the House of Sacred Remains a certain number of times, something would happen but I don't remember what it was. There were other small things as well, I think.

Very interesting. Thanks for this information. I know the bowling minigame is in the US version, and I thought there was another minigame somewhere, but I can't remember where or what it was. I wonder why they would remove stuff from the US version when they were clearly in development side-by-side. Can anybody translate the text from that guide? I actually have the Japanese guide but never looked closely enough at those pages, I guess.

Oh wow, there's a lot about Lament I don't know about. I love all these secrets. Now if only it wasn't a total chore to trudge through the areas.

Thanks so much for translating that! I need to play LoI again to see if any of these are in the USA version. I know for sure that the bowling is, and I think the Guillotine Chicken game might be too.

I can confirm that these two are in LoI's English version. The others I was unaware of.
Note: If you want the ramen, try to get it with the weakest whip and the weak whip attack and without using anything that boosts your damage, otherwise you run the risk of killing the Peeping Eye before you can finish the mini-game. If you mess up (hitting one of the skeletons with your whip directly or killing the Peeping Eye) you can leave the room and re-enter to try again.
