Classic Castlevania is officialy dead. Iga is sending me CityVille requests from Facebook. MercurySteam doesn't know anything about the old series (they just reference the mythology). Michiru Yamane left the video game business (Skullgirls is just a freelance temporary job). Ayami Kojima is loosing her career. Konami wants west-style gaming. But Castlevania was always a Japanese thing.
Sorry folks. Sorry for my sometimes wrong English.
-
I haven't received any Castleville request from IGA in a while...
But I'm feeling you. Things may get better when MercurySteam is done doing their thing. Which will be soon.
-
I'm not sure about the validity of the rest, but last I heard Ayami Kojima was doing art for Hideyuki Kikuchi's new Vampire Hunter novel series, Another Vampire Hunter the Noble Greylancer (http://vampirehunterd.wikia.com/wiki/Another_Vampire_Hunter_Series (http://vampirehunterd.wikia.com/wiki/Another_Vampire_Hunter_Series)). Anyone doing artwork for Mr. Kikuchi is generally accepted as doing well for themselves, especially for one of his longer running series (like Vampire Hunter D), even if it is an offshoot novel series.
-
What? No more Amano? Gah. Amano's D was THE Vampire Hunter D.
That said, I like the gal that did the manga versions of VHD, too.
-
You forgot their complete dismissal of the 25th Anniversary, and how dead the Anti-Chapel has become o.o;
But i think things will get better. After LoS2 is released next year, they can go back to the real timeline & make the games like the old ones. Best case scenario, WayForward picks up the slack and delivers a high-def CANON classicvania, featuring Soleiyu or Quincy. I doubt any other developer will make games in the LoS universe, because
1: Cox repeatedly stated that MercurySteam wants to tie up all loose ends & close their storyline
2: Fans across the net are practically begging for a return to the original timeline/play style
3: MS wants to work on other games other than Castlevania
So don't fret, my son, things will be as they once were, but better. We just gotta be patient. LoS2 will be a good game (still kinda on the fence about MoF), but we deserve more.
-
Konami wants west-style gaming. But Castlevania was always a Japanese thing.
Times changing.

Amano is still doing the original Vampire Hunter D series, Mr. Kikuchi is doing a kind of prequel novel about Another Vampire Hunter the Noble Greylancer set in the same universe as VHD, just several thousand years prior, if I remember correctly.
So don't worry, we'll still get our delicious Amano D.

Even without the Triumvirate, Castlevania can still succeed. It just needs to land in the right hands in order to do so. IGA was well-known but he never invented Castlevania. Michiru Yamane and Ayami Kojima are also well-known for their contributions, but like IGA they were not around during the birth of the series. So to me CV isn't dead and it doesn't need to rely solely on those mentioned above just to survive. CV is just going through a transitional phase with the LoS series at the moment. We'll see what happens afterwards.

Wait wait wait...Kojima is doing art for some books for Vampire Hunter D?! WHY AM I JUST NOW HEARING ABOUT THIS?! I know it's just a spin-off novel thing, but Kojima doing art for the VHD universe is like a dream come true!
Of course, I will still always love Amano's artwork for the main series, but I am really curious to see Kojima's take on the VHD universe.
EDIT: And Amazon is my friend http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product/4022739797/ref=dp_change_lang/378-8235800-1413730?ie=UTF8&language=en_JP (http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product/4022739797/ref=dp_change_lang/378-8235800-1413730?ie=UTF8&language=en_JP)

That first link lets you take a peek inside the book for more Kojima goodness! :P
But uh, to actually say something relevant to the topic here, I have lost some hope in Castlevania myself lately, but I will always remain a fan. I still think MoF looks interesting, but I still dislike LoS. And there is not enough stuff out there for me to judge LoS2 yet.

But I'm feeling you. Things may get better when MercurySteam is done doing their thing. Which will be soon.
I honestly don't see why so many people don't like MercurySteam's interpretation of Castlevania. Please explain.

I honestly don't see why so many people don't like MercurySteam's interpretation of Castlevania. Please explain.
For the same reason some people didn't like Rob Zombie's interpretation of Halloween, or Platinum Dune's interpretation of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Wait wait wait...Kojima is doing art for some books for Vampire Hunter D?! WHY AM I JUST NOW HEARING ABOUT THIS?!
Seriously? I thought you guys would have been all over this when it was announced...oh well, glad I shared!
I have to say I'm excited for the next 2 installments of LoS. I'm a little sad to see it end but also hopeful to see what the future holds for my beloved series. Here's to hoping for more CV after LoS instead of just canning the entire series and forgetting it forever or relegating it to pachislots. Here's looking at you Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
-
Well, the only thing that I can say is to try to remain faithful, we dont know with will happens after they lauch LoS 2 and MoF. Remember that some franchises take much more time until they release a new title and their fans have to wait much more than we already waited. Im not happy with the actual situation too, but Im trying to doesnt take it seriously until we see Konami next move.
-
TROLL POST
I'm not trolling, uzo. I'm completely serious. As far as I see it, the hate on LoS is simply "oh God something I like is changing this is so horrible and the worst possible thing to ever happen ever." Bear in mind this is because no one's explained to me why it's so hated. Remember, I'm not as deeply involved in the Castlevania universe and its updates as most people on here are (getting better, but still). I don't really pay much attention to these things and as such need them explained to me.
So, again, why do people hate MercurySteam's Castlevania?
-
I think its because it dont feels like Castlevania to them, they see it like a God of War, also maybe its because of the story and the end. Also its like if it are trying to erase all that came before it.
Well, feel free to add or remove things on this list, and correct me if Im wrong, it seems that it have been discussed here so many times that it looks like that you are trolling, I think thats why uzo said that.
-
Because it lacks the Belmont strut.

I had a lenghty paragraph about the question but like Crisis said
Seriously. It's beating an extremely dead horse for us to explain yet again why it lacks the CV "feel." All we need is for someone to make yet another topic with the title "why i think LoS is/isn't a true CV game"
We've discussed it for nearly four years and we don't need another thread that will eventually turn into a IGA vs Cox war.
In the meantime, Go play Double Dragon Neon, like right now!

That said, here's a clip from a Sega Saturn game "Clockwork Knight"

This game remembers me of SNES Toy Story ;D
-
TC I think everyone(well maybe not everyone) feels the same way. To be honest only CV I've played in along time is HoDe. Although I've thought of hooking up the ps2 and playing LoI. Anywho like most people have said just wait and hope it changes.
-
Also, thats not a "dead horse", thats a "dead cow" and here is the explanation of why it ever returns:

Okay, so I get accused of trolling when posting a serious question, but offtopic videos are fine. That's cool.
And this
Seriously. It's beating an extremely dead horse for us to explain yet again why it lacks the CV "feel." All we need is for someone to make yet another topic with the title "why i think LoS is/isn't a true CV game"
is bullshit. This post centers on the presumption that every Castlevania fan has the same opinion on it, and it boils down to being JUST an opinion. And I didn't plan on starting an IGA/Cox war, or make a new thread, I just asked what the problem with it was. So it plays like God of War. So it lacks the pimpwalk(this is a tragedy, I admit). So Cox attempted to reintroduce Dracula's origins. Who cares? I don't think Castlevania should be about the practical appeal or adherence to a FICTIONAL plot, not the way you're implying it. It's the tone that makes the game as far as I'm concerned, and I'll definitely beat the dead fucking horse if no one wants to give me a solid answer.
Actually, let me elaborate on that a bit more. All of you feel it's a dead horse topic because you've had the game since it came out(relatively); I've not even owned it for a year. As such, I'm newer to Lords than the rest of you, and don't know as much about it as you may; however, I don't see why my opinion should be invalidated or looked down on because I don't know as much/don't agree with everyone else. That's HARDLY fair. And it's somewhat pointless to say that it lacks the CV "feel" when the CV "feel" is based heavily on inaccuracies in mythologies and an inconsistent timeline.
-
No one here's obligated to give you a reason. There's tons of pages to shift through and many topics where all of us have explained our dislike of LoS over and over again. So cut the "i want an answer NOW!!" attitude, in fact many of us have moved forward and are actually looking forward to Mirror of Fate, the first LoS is done and over with.
In fact you can even look on youtube for some LoS reviews that sum up all our thoughts nicely. Or you can be lazy and start a topic "can you guys explain why LoS doesn't feel like castlevania," because you're obviously special.
-
I didn't say I was special. I said your generalizations were bullshit and just wanted answers.
But fair enough. I'll stop asking Castlevania questions on the Castlevania forum.
-
Hey! Since when we treated users this way?! Calm down here, he is only asking a question, if no one gonna answer its fine, but we dont need to bash him that way right? He appears here rarely, and when he appears we treat him like that? Lets try to remain calm and civil here, please.
And no, its not mini-moding, but I just doesnt like when people bash or fight each other like that, hau auu~
-
But Castlevania was always a Japanese thing.
awww. your engrish is making me sad buddy

thank you for the randomness. made my day. if you actually had a point, sorry

TC I think everyone(well maybe not everyone) feels the same way.
I am sorry, but that is a wishfull thinking and nothing else. :)

I appreciate this, I really do, but don't worry about it. If this is the kind of response I get for asking a question then I'd much prefer watching aforementioned YouTube reviews.
-
Seriously, way to jump down a guy's throat with an honest question that could have been handled more like "Sorry, we're tired of discussing this matter, if you're that curious please browse through the forum or post in the Classic forum which was designed for repeat discussions" or something.
And again, not everyone here shares the same sentiment of LoS not being a CV title or the lack of CV feel. I think individuals see something different when they play a CV title and it's up to them to determine what they like or dislike it. Konami dictates what is or isn't a CV title, buck up and just carry on with life. You determine whether you like or dislike a CV game, and if it's because it doesn't "feel" like the rest, that's cool. But unless you're Konami or you own the IP for CV you can't decry a CV game to not be a CV game. It is, because Konami/those in charge with the IP said it is.
Don't like it? Go buy all of Konami's shares, gain control of the IP and change it. I mean hell, some of us consider Kid Dracula part of the CV-verse and a CV title but no where on it does it state being a CV or Akumajou title. Cut LoS some slack, so you didn't like it but that doesn't make it not a CV title. Can we consider that fair?
-

And I whole-hearty agree with this. I don't like it either when someone decides to goose-step on others just because of a question. We have rules so that people don't go around bashing each other just because they think they can. It's just sick stupidity and an action of neglect for Jorge's forum rules. If someone wants answers to a question, then be respectful. If there are those who're tired of hearing the same questions asked, then leave it alone. It's THAT easy.

People are sick and tired of others strolling in with "WHATS THE BIG DEAL MAN" after we've gone through and explained it in great detail every month for the last TWO YEARS.
At this point, it just looks like someone wanting to start trouble.
-
i hope nobodys mad at me ;.;
-
Crisis, I am the mostest mad. >:( ( ;) )
But in all seriousness if everyone feels bad for jumping down the poor guy's throat and learns to be more patient, since this is an interwebz forum with a long history and not everyone will read through every discussion in the history of this place, then I think no harm no foul.
And just because this is a heated topic that you or anyone else has talked about for two solid years with intricate topics, cited sources and industry insider knowledge that blows the lid off everything and you're tired to death of discussing it doesn't give you the right to treat other members with genuine inquiry, of even trolling, like they were a sub-humans.
I mean, just because I've had heated debates that a manual transmission is better than an automatic with people and haters for years doesn't mean I can rip into the next person who asks why I think that, whether serious or not (especially if I have no history with this individual). Is it so hard to be kind to others?
-
I am...
... not mad at you, but try to take care next time, these "spikes" on your "armor" can harm some people, if I are in your shoes I would apologize to Dracula9 tough.
-
i hope nobodys mad at me ;.;
The best way to prevent people from being mad at you is to keep that ego in check and not get carried away. In this case the best thing to do is move on towards the future and not repeat the same past mistakes again. By doing so you'll look much better in the eyes of others and they will be that much quicker to forgiving you. Nobody wants to end up fighting with others over some miniscule trivial matter, especially not on a long-running respectable forum such as this one.
-
I think you're taking things way too seriously, but thanks anyway lol

Castlevania was always a Japanese thing.
The very roots of Castlevania are in WESTERN horror movies and mythology. It wasn't until more around Aria of Sorrow (GBA) that Eastern mythology and themes were introduced.
-
But mashing together those Western horrors is a aJapanese thing when taken to the extent that yielded Castlevania.
-
Actually its both... It was hugely inspired by Vampire Hunter D and then combined with classic movie monsters to fill with more stuff than just Drac. Maybe they wanted to use Drac instead of Magnus Lee and figured oh hey itd be awesome if Frankensteins Monster was a boss! And ohhhhhh!!! A Mummy!! so on and so forth
-
I mean hell, some of us consider Kid Dracula part of the CV-verse and a CV title but no where on it does it state being a CV or Akumajou title.
The Japanese title is Akumajo Special: Boku Dracula-kun! :-X
-

Ummm... then what happened here?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Frankenstein_(1944_film) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Frankenstein_(1944_film))
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Dracula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Dracula)
:P Not to discredit you, but merely pointing out Westerners aren't foreign to the concept either.
I think what we're also missing is the inclusion of Greek Mythology (Medusa + heads) among other items. All this through the lens of Japanese sensibility and action and what we get are the initial incarnation of Castlevania.
While I admit Castlevania has very Japanese roots I don't believe this means it has to remain as such. Nor do I think it dictates whether a Castlevania game will be good or not based on the national origin of the development studio. This is the 21st century, and in this age of massive globalization we really should look beyond "well this is how it's always been done and should remain that way!"
I mean, if I eat a burger made in Thailand and don't like it, should I dictates burgers should only ever be made in America, since burgers originated there and they know it best? (hint: Burgers in Japan are awesome and I prefer them)
The Japanese title is Akumajo Special: Boku Dracula-kun! :-X
Well color me embarrassed and corrected, probably something I should of looked up instead of making the statement. Thank you for the correction, I do appreciate it. However, my statement still stands! Just on less stable ground and credibility... :-[

I think that's one of the things I love about CV(mainly the early ones). Love the whole "monster mash" thing. Only a adding more and more classic movie monsters made it such a cool game(from a kid in the 80s standpoint).
And yeah, there has existed various horror crossovers, but to having a mess load of crossovers where nearly all the classics appear, it's only been done a handful of times. One was Mad Monster Party, one was Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf, and another was Monster Squad(Hell, toss in Waxwork for good measure). That type of thing always turned me on(not in THAT way). The whole "Dracula, Mummy, Frankenstein(yes, it was politically incorrect to call him Frankenstein, be most of us did that anyway), Igor/Hunchback, Merman(no doubt modeled after the Gillman of Creature from the Black Lagoon),...", the only thing the original was missing was the Wolfman, which appeared as a monster in Simon's Quest, and maybe Invisible Man and Jekyll & Hyde(though the former became a monster in more recent IGAvanias, and the latter, I think, was a boss in ReBirth). But anyway, yeah, that stuff's cool. It's always cool to see all the movie monsters together.

To be 100% fair, TC, I never once thought that Castlevania was officially 'dead' simply because of Cox and Mercurysteam taking over. Don't get me wrong: I do like the IGA games (and the man himself is quite polite), and certainly, I'm not the biggest fan of the first LoS, but I don't think it's fair to say that Castlevania is as we know it is dead.
I've always felt that Castlevania was more of a chameleon, a changing entity: I mean just look at the original, NES games all the way to SOTN. That had to be a bit of shock for fans from the earliest era: it didn't have the same gameplay, it didn't star a Belmont (and possibly worse, had a Belmont get brainwashed by the very people he'd previously laid the smack down on, which you never want to see happen to the badass hero family of a series), it was completely in the castle instead of leading up to said castle and roaming various eras, the art direction was completely different (to say the least) than before...
It was something fans of the older series had to get used to (and I'm sure some never really did, even if they're seemingly rare now) but the series adapted and changed and it happened. We got IGA-era after SOTN for years, which I'm sure was disappointing and disheartening to the early ear of fans that never liked the style or what it had to offer and desperately wanted it to return to the original style. Now the IGA-era has come to and and the series is trying something new with Cox's mini era. And then we'll probably get something new after that.
Never thought I'd flat out defend LoS (because I'm not a fan and despise that damn ending...) but it does have so much potential, which is why I'm willing to give MoF and LoS2 a shot. It did remind me of the NES/original games, where a Belmont actually wondered around other places other than the castle itself (it had been so long, OoE not withstanding, that I found it refreshing, even if I do agree the feel and mood was 'off'), used a whip-like weapon (I forgive the Vampire Killer thing because in the earlier game, it was more of a morning star with no name instead), and more importantly, it's brought the Castlevania brand back into the limelight again. It's not IGA-ish, no. But then IGA-ish games were never the ONLY type of Castlevania style there was.
And if the final two games end up not being to my liking, then I have the solace of knowing I won't have to deal with Mercurysteam/Cox era anymore, which is more than I can say for any fans that hated the IGA-era.
Yes, I'm looking forward to MoF and LoS2 and I'm looking forward to the future endeavors the series has to offer.
I mean, I stomached Castlevania Judgement, I can stomach anything.
Or rather...rambling done: Castlevania will NEVER be truly dead to me until Konami stops making the games. 8)

People are sick and tired of others strolling in with "WHATS THE BIG DEAL MAN" after we've gone through and explained it in great detail every month for the last TWO YEARS.
At this point, it just looks like someone wanting to start trouble.
As reasonable a thought as that is, though, it means nothing to me.
This is a Castlevania discussion forum. With the comatose state of the Chapel, this is more or less the "go-to" place for Castlevania Q&A. If people are still this passionate about the topic, even if it's heated by "ugh this is so old," then the topic's popularity is still very much alive. And in that regard, if one is able to explain why they shouldn't have to give a response, then they should be able to give one. It's not like answering a question expends more energy than ripping on someone.
No one here's obligated to give you a reason
No one person is, yes, unless specifically asked for; but the forum as a community is, by its existence as a Castlevania discussion board, absolutely obligated to answer questions about the series. Hence why the forum even exists. But I'm not concerned with an answer to my question anymore(someone was kind enough to PM me with what I was looking for). Instead I'm more outraged that I got this kind of response. While it doesn't explicitly bother me, it seriously bothers me that new members might get this same kind of treatment. Which would easily discourage them from coming back, and we'd end up, as a forum, as a bunch of cynical assholes who ream any new blood that comes by. I don't think we want to become the old Sprites Inc forums.

This made me smile, thank you. I hope more fans of the series will start to feel the same way. Like the demonic castle of the series' namesake, Castlevania has always been a living, breathing and growing entity that changes to what forms suit it best.
As a fan of everything from the beginning to now, I am looking forward to the future and seeing what path our series of chaos will take us. Cheers!
-
I love me some classicvania and metroidvania(not as much but still). I am looking foward to new stuff no need to cling on to the past let's look foward to the future and see the new things that are possible. Good or bad it will be one hell of a ride right guys and gals ;D

While I do not agree with the harshness of the forum response, the forum responses are not wrong, in particular, which is why I'm not micromanaging this thread.
Seriously Dracula9, the 'search' function on a board exists for a reason.
It's like coming in here and asking "What's the deal with Dracula, amirite?".
The time for discussion about Lords of Shadow has come and gone by. Many many moons have passed since it was a hot topic of discussion, and, quite frankly, where have you been, man? Anyone who's even a remote follower of Castlevania who posts at pretty much any Castlevania related board (including GameFAQs) should be aware of the general feeling that a portion of the fans have got. You may disagree with it, but to not even be aware of it? Have you been living under a rock?
So, again, while I'm not particularly fond of the responses given, they reflect a feeling of "We've generally gone over this... you're bringing it up now? Are you trying to start something? Let's not go there again". But that's too many words, so...
It's kinda a newbie thing to post. I expect this from newbies with three threads under their wing, but not from someone like you who's been around the block a few times. Just sayin'. And no, the forum could just ignore your post 'demanding for answers'. I was almost half-expecting someone to go to "let me google that for you" or something.
Do feel free to stir up the old sentiment by posting a thread in "Classic Castlevania Threads" though. I'm sure that there will be helpful forum folk who will elaborate on the PM you received.

"This [franchise] is a creature of chaos. It may take many incarnations."
You are now reading it in Robert Belgrade's voice.
-
Fair enough, Jorge. I'll lay off it.
-
Who is Robert Belgrade? lol
-
WHAAAAAT
R. Belgrade is the ORIGINAL Alucard, and the best, imo
-
Who is Robert Belgrade? lol
The original SotN Voice-actor. If you play the PSP SotN version they changed the voice actors around. And the line that Flame posted was a near word-for-word line that Alucard says to Maria, so it was a freaking awesome inside-joke :D I laughed hard at it.
-
Yeah, I recognized the joke, but I didnt knew the name of the voice actor until now, it makes much more sense now, thanks. xD
