Thanks to some pro-wrestling swerving, someone got me to join my first and only social media service, for 2 years I barely touched the bloody thing then found old friends and classmates. After that I now get to see what kind of life they are living nearly 20 years later after graduation.

Similar, I joined FaceBook last year and found out my friend got out of prison. :rollseyes: (I'm actually not kidding.)

Same thing happened to me. When I rejoined facebook, it turned out one of my best friends from high school was in prison for manslaughter and possession with intent to distribute. He was the one who introduced me to Final Fantasy as well.

Probably shouldn't have laughed at that...but I did. No cool FB stories from me, but it's interesting putting faces to some of these names! (Though we've all known Jorge is a good looking stud)

I didn't mention the worst part of why he's in for life, murder of his own child. Guy one day just snapped, his kid wouldn't stop crying, details are fuzzy though on whether it was shaken baby syndrome, or that he repeatedly slammed the baby's head on the floor, lost all respect for the guy after hearing this. Another friend of ours blames the guys lack of a father figure in his life, still no excuse for doing what he did, he could've been better.

I am aware of it. It appears on the top right hand side of the boards from time to time.
But I won't be joining it. Facebook is a fad, it will soon fade away. Plus I don't want to reconnect with those idiotic classmates I had in high school.

I'm not exactly sure how Facebook can be considered a fad when it's basically the next level of Internet communication.

Of course, MySpace fell to the wayside, so ya never know.

If you're going to refuse to join everything because of the idea that 'it's a fad', you're going to miss out on a lot of good things.
Mind you, I'm not telling you to join Facebook or join the group.  Some people just don't dig their life details being cataloged online for the masses, and being owned by a corporation, as well as other perfectly good reasons.

However, the 'fad' excuse doesn't really hold water because fads are usually known as fads in hindsight (same with trends).  When something has existed for almost a decade (it's going on for 9 years now with probably 7 of which being accessible to all), it's hard to see it as a fad.  People at one point thought Television was a fad. The Internet, portable music, wireless networking, are other examples.

yes, it's safe to say FB is not just a fad, anymore. A trend, that lasted for awhile, maybe. Only time will tell. There's no need to 'fight the power', just for the sakes of fighting the power. ;)
