Title: Vampire: Master of Darkness
Post by: SiFi270 on November 20, 2012, 11:31:11 AM
Also known as just "Master of Darkness". (http://www.mobygames.com/game/master-of-darkness/)

I stumbled upon this game earlier today when browsing an emulation website I'd probably get into trouble for linking to. Simply put, it's a neat Castlevania clone on the Game Gear and Master System, with many similarities, some obvious and some subtle. There are a variety of melee weapons to use, as well as some interesting subweapons. Unfortunately, it's very short (only five stages) and due to health powerups being more common, it's pretty easy as well. Regardless, if you're willing to download or buy this game, I recommend you do so.

Hmmm... I wonder if this game is a sequel, prequel or a similar adaption of the Game gear title. The logo is virtually the same.

The Gamegear version is pretty much identical with a few altered sprites from what I've seen. The Game Gear was essentially a portable Master System (although since it came out later it had support for slightly higher quality video, some more colors iirc) and many Master System games were ported to the GG. There was even a converter you could buy to play Master System game carts on the GG. I have the Master System version but never considered getting the GG one really. I haven't used my GG in like a decade so no idea if it works, the thing takes 6 AA batteries for like an hour of play.

It's an interesting game but I've never beaten it because boredom always overtakes me about 2 or 3 levels in. The closest we're likely to ever get to a Castlevania adaptation of the original Dracula novel though. A nice historical curiosity and well made for a Master System game.

This looks interesting.  If I didn't have a crapton of games I'm trying to work on, I'd look into picking this up.  It was discussed here recently in this thread:
